Abstract:This study is aimed to develop a volume of fluid (VOF) method to capture the free surface flow. The incompressible two-phase flow is computed by second-order Adams-Bashforth algorithm with a uniform staggered Cartesian grid arrangement. The tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing (THINC) scheme and weighted linear interface calculation (WLIC) based geometrical reconstruction procedure have been implemented in the operator-splitting method for the VOF method. The proposed VOF method preserves mass well, and the interface normal vector can be easily estimated from the level set (IS) function. The IS function, which is a continuous signed distance function around the interface, is represented by solving the re-initialization equation. Numerical results using the present scheme are compared with experimental data and other numerical results in the Rayleigh-Taylor instability, dam-break flow, travelling solitary wave, Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, rising bubble and merging bubble problems. We also present numerical results in detail between computations made with the proposed VOF method and computations made with the conventional LS method.

Abstract:A two-phase flow model is developed to study violent impact flow problem. The model governed by the Navier-Stokes equations with free surface boundary conditions is solved by a Constrained Interpolation Profile (CIP)-based high-order finite difference method on a fixed Cartesian grid system. The free surface is immersed in the computation domain and expressed by a one-fluid density function. An accurate Volume of Fluid (VOF)-type scheme, the Tangent of Hyperbola for Interface Capturing (THINC), is combined for the free surface treatment. Results of another two free surface capturing methods, the original VOF and CIP, are also presented for comparison. The validity and utility of the numerical model are demonstrated by applying it to two dam-break problems: a small-scale two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) full scale simulations and a large-scale 2D simulation. Main attention is paid to the water elevations and impact pressure, and the numerical results show relatively good agreement with available experimental measurements. It is shown that the present numerical model can give a satisfactory prediction for violent impact flow.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an adaptive moving mesh algorithm for meshes of unstructured polyhedra in three space dimensions. The algorithm automatically adjusts the size of the elements with time and position in the physical domain to resolve the relevant scales in multiscale physical systems while minimizing computational costs. The algorithm is a generalization of the moving mesh methods based on harmonic mappings developed by Li et al. [J. Comput. Phys., 170 (2001), pp. 562588, and 177 (2002), pp. 365-393]. To make 3D moving mesh simulations possible, the key is to develop an efficient mesh redistribution procedure so that this part will cost as little as possible comparing with the solution evolution part. Since the mesh redistribution procedure normally requires to solve large size matrix equations, we will describe a procedure to decouple the matrix equation to a much simpler block-tridiagonal type which can be efficiently solved by a particularly designed multi-grid method. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed 3D moving mesh strategy, the algorithm is implemented in finite element simulations of fluid-fluid interface interactions in multiphase flows. To demonstrate the main ideas, we consider the formation of drops by using an energetic variational phase field model which describes the motion of mixtures of two incompressible fluids. Numerical results on two- and three-dimensional simulations will be presented.
Unified Method for Three-dimensional Moving Boundary in Lattice Boltzmann Method

Abstract:A unified method is proposed to treat 3D moving boundaries at arbitrary velocity as an extension of kinetic format and bounce-back format.Velocities at inlet and on solid wall are special cases of the model.A simplified expression is given in a three dimensional 15velocity model.Numerical simulation for a diagonally lid-driven three-dimensional cavity flow is performed to verify this scheme.Compared with finite difference method(FDM),the proposed method proves reasonable.

Abstract:In this paper, an improved CIP (constrained interpolation profile)-based numerical model, which combines with Afivo (Adaptive Finite Volume quadtree/Octree mesh, an adaptive mesh framework), has been presented to simulate free-surface flow. In the CIP-based model, the constrained interpolation profile (CIP) method, a high-order finite difference method, is employed as the base flow solver and THINC/SW (Tangent of Hyperbola for Interface Capturing with Slope Weighting) method, a volume of fluid method, is applied to capture the flow interface. In this present model, an adaptive mesh technique is introduced to reduce the computational cost and multigrid technique is used to improve the solution efficiency. In the adaptive mesh system, new spatial interpolation schemes are provided, which have better performance in mass conservation compared with schemes provided in Afivo. Lid-driven cavity flow test was carried out to validate the accuracy of the flow solver with adaptive mesh and two/three-dimensional interface benchmark tests were performed to test the reliability of the interface capturing scheme and spatial interpolation schemes. Then two/three-dimensional applications (dam-break flow case, tank sloshing case and dam-break flow over a rectangular obstacle case) were investigated to demonstrate the model accuracy. The numerical results were compared with the previous experimental and numerical results, and good agreements were observed. It is demonstrated that the present numerical model has good applicability in modeling the free-surface flow.

Abstract:In this paper, a new immersed‐boundary method for simulating flows over complex immersed, moving boundaries is presented. The flow is computed on a fixed Cartesian mesh and the solid boundaries are allowed to move freely through the mesh. The present method is based on a finite‐difference approach on a staggered mesh together with a fractional‐step method. It must be noted that the immersed boundary is generally not coincident with the position of the solution variables on the grid, therefore, an appropriate strategy is needed to construct a relationship between the curved boundary and the grid points nearby. Furthermore, a momentum forcing is added on the body boundaries and also inside the body to satisfy the no‐slip boundary condition. The immersed boundary is represented by a series of interfacial markers, and the markers are also used as Lagrangian forcing points. A linear interpolation is then used to scale the Lagrangian forcing from the interfacial markers to the corresponding grid points nearby. This treatment of the immersed‐boundary is used to simulate several problems, which have been validated with previous experimental results in the open literature, verifying the accuracy of the present method. Direct Numerical Algorithm for Multiphase Flow with Free Surfaces and Interfaces.

Abstract:This paper is to describe a new direct numerical procedure for solving general multiphase flow problems with many free surfaces and interfaces. Since conventional cell volume fraction approaches, such as SOLA-VOF, use the donor-acceptor procedure for the transport of fluid-segments, they cannot transport the interface slope with sufficient accuracy. In the present study, a new accurate algorithm for interface advection and its reconstruction, called MARS (Multi-interfaces Advection and Reconstruction Solver), was developed. It consists of the continuum surface force (CSF) model for surface tension and a new line-segment algorithm for capturing and connecting the interface between neighborhood computational cells. In order to show the potential of the MARS, some direct numerical simulation results for the formation and agglomeration of bubbles in a bubble column were presented as an example.
A Cartesian grid-based boundary integral method for moving interface problems

Abstract:This paper proposes a Cartesian grid-based boundary integral method for efficiently and stably solving two representative moving interface problems, the Hele-Shaw flow and the Stefan problem. Elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) are reformulated into boundary integral equations and are then solved with the matrix-free generalized minimal residual (GMRES) method. The evaluation of boundary integrals is performed by solving equivalent and simple interface problems with finite difference methods, allowing the use of fast PDE solvers, such as fast Fourier transform (FFT) and geometric multigrid methods. The interface curve is evolved utilizing the $\theta-L$ variables instead of the more commonly used $x-y$ variables. This choice simplifies the preservation of mesh quality during the interface evolution. In addition, the $\theta-L$ approach enables the design of efficient and stable time-stepping schemes to remove the stiffness that arises from the curvature term. Ample numerical examples, including simulations of complex viscous fingering and dendritic solidification problems, are presented to showcase the capability of the proposed method to handle challenging moving interface problems.

A simple diffuse interface approach for compressible flows around moving solids of arbitrary shape based on a reduced Baer-Nunziato model

Abstract:In this paper we propose a new diffuse interface model for the numerical simulation of inviscid compressible flows around fixed and moving solid bodies of arbitrary shape. The solids are assumed to be moving rigid bodies, without any elastic properties. The model is a simplified case of the seven-equation Baer-Nunziato model of compressible multi-phase flows, and results in a nonlinear hyperbolic system with non-conservative products. The geometry of the solid bodies is simply specified via a scalar field that represents the volume fraction of the fluid present in each control volume. This allows the discretization of arbitrarily complex geometries on simple uniform or adaptive Cartesian meshes. Inside the solid bodies, the fluid volume fraction is zero, while it is unitary in the fluid phase. We prove that at the material interface, i.e. where the volume fraction jumps from unity to zero, the normal component of the fluid velocity assumes the value of the normal component of the solid velocity. This result can be directly derived from the governing equations, either via Riemann invariants or from the generalized Rankine Hugoniot conditions according to the theory of Dal Maso, Le Floch and Murat, which justifies the use of a path-conservative approach for treating the nonconservative products. The governing equations of our new model are solved on uniform Cartesian grids via a high order path-conservative ADER discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method with a posteriori sub-cell finite volume (FV) limiter. Since the numerical method is of the shock capturing type, the fluid-solid boundary is never explicitly tracked by the numerical method, neither via interface reconstruction, nor via mesh motion. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is tested on a set of numerical test problems, including 1D Riemann problems as well as supersonic flows over fixed and moving rigid bodies.

Abstract:The Distributed-Lagrange-Multiplier based Fictitious Domain (DLM/FD) method previously proposed by Yu [J. Comput. Phys. 207 (2005), 1–27] for the simulation of fluid/flexible-body interaction problems is extended from the 2D to the 3D case in this study. We first demonstrate that the Lagrange multiplier problem can be more efficiently solved with a direct-forcing scheme instead of the original Uzawa iterations without the sacrifice of the accuracy. The type of the interpolation function (i.e. smoothed delta function) for the transfer of the quantities between the Eulerian and Lagragian frames is shown not to affect the results significantly. Secondly, the fictitious domain method is implemented in the three-dimensional case. The new 3D codes are applied to the flapping of a 3D flexible plate in a uniform flow, and the deformation of tri-leaflets at opening stage.

Abstract:Within the context of Eulerian approaches, we aim to develop a new interface-capturing solver to predict two-phase flow in 2D/3D Cartesian meshes. To achieve mass conservation and to capture interface topology accurately, a mass-preserving level set advection equation cast in the scalar sign-distance function is developed. The novelty of the proposed Eulerian solver lies in the introduction of a scalar speed function to rigorously reconstruct the classical level set equation. Through several benchmark problems, the proposed flow solver for solving incompressible two-phase viscous flow equations has been verified.

Abstract:We present a numerical model for the approximation of multiphase flows with free surfaces and strong interfacial effects. The model relies on the multiphase incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, and includes surface tension effects on the interfaces between phases, and contact angles. The volume-of-fluid approach is used to track the interfaces and the free surfaces between the various phases and the ambient air. The numerical method relies on an operator splitting strategy. The space discretization relies on a two-grid approach that uses an unstructured finite element mesh for diffusion phenomena and a structured Cartesian grid for advection phenomena. An adaptive mesh refinement algorithm is incorporated to better track the interfaces and free surfaces on the finite element mesh, and approximate more accurately surface forces. The model is validated through numerical experiments, in particular for emulsion problems.

Abstract:In the realm of numerical algorithms for investigating interactions between multiphase fluids and structure, the accurate computation of moving contact lines (MCLs) dynamics and the substantial computational resource demands bring challenges in three-dimensional simulations. In this study, an improved diffuse interface-immersed boundary method is proposed to efficiently investigate three-dimensional multiphase fluids–structure interactions. The present work commences with the development of the explicit correction scheme and the simplified Dirac function coefficient, designed to efficiently implement the immersed boundary technique. To validate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method, the simulations of water entry and exit for a half-buoyant sphere are carried out, which conclusively demonstrate that the proposed method offers significant advantages in terms of both efficiency and accuracy, faithfully capturing the dynamic response of solid structures and the substantial deformation of free surfaces at the three-dimensional scale. Additionally, a comparative analysis of the results obtained using the proposed method for the free water exit of a hollow sphere against previous experimental data is conducted, highlighting the promising potential of the proposed method for applications.

Abstract:Topology change of interfaces often leads to unresolved interface structures such as tiny droplets/bubbles, which requires the regularization of the order parameter and consequently causes artificial modification of volume fraction of the fluids. This could give rise to unphysical oscillation of pressure and cause the failure of computation, in particular for two-phase flows involving large density ratio. We develop a robust conservative sharp-interface method for incompressible viscous two-phase flows with topology changes and large density ratio. The method consists of a cut-cell meshing approach that dynamically generates unstructured meshes in the vicinity of the interface, a second-order finite volume scheme in the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian framework, and a projection method. The jump conditions at the interfaces are incorporated into the calculation of fluxes at the cell faces of the unstructured meshes that coincide with the reconstructed interfaces, to ensure that they are strictly satisfied at the interface. Unlike a pseudo-compressible formulation used in the previous study, the projection method prevents the oscillation of pressure in the presence of topology change. Special treatments are proposed to further improve the robustness of the method when dealing with unresolved interface structures, including removal of tiny droplets, adjustment of spatial discretization and restriction of the maximum curvature calculated. In such a way, two-phase flows involving topology change and large density ratio can be numerically resolved in a sharp-interface, efficient and robust manner. The performance of the proposed method is systematically examined by a series of numerical tests, including spurious currents, oscillation of a suspended droplet, droplet deformation in shear flows, breakup of a liquid thread, rising bubbles and partial coalescence of a droplet with a pool. The numerical results are compared against analytical solution, benchmark results or experimental data, and good agreement has been achieved.

Abstract:A numerical model is developed for fluid-rigid body interaction involving free surfaces on moving unstructured grids using the Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation. The multi-moment finite volume method is used for the spatial discretization of Navier–Stokes equations in which volume integrated average (VIA) and point values (PVs) are defined as prognostic variables and updated by integral and differential form respectively. Given VIA and PV in each cell, a higher-order reconstruction function can be built in a compact stencil which improves the numerical accuracy and robustness on the unstructured grids. More importantly, it facilitates imposing a more accurate Dirichlet-Neumann condition for the partitioned interface between the fluid and solid region. The geometrical conservation law (GCL) is also formulated to govern the spatial volume element under an arbitrary mapping. In order to capture the free surfaces of multiphase flows, the volume-of-fluid (VOF) equation is solved by THINC/QQ (THINC method with quadratic surface representation and Gaussian quadrature) scheme in varying mesh, which achieves geometrical faithful interface representation, particularly for curved surfaces in a complex and moving domain. The present model is validated by some benchmark tests in two dimensions for fluid–structure interaction problems with free surfaces. The numerical results show closer agreement with the experimental data than the reference solution of other numerical models. It convinces that the present model provides accurate and robust solutions for the simulation of the complex interaction between the free surface flows and moving bodies.

Abstract:This research paper focuses on the development of a novel interface-capturing solver for predicting two-phase flow in 2D/3D Cartesian meshes within the framework of Eulerian approaches. The primary objective is to ensure mass conservation and accurate capture of interface topology. To achieve this, a mass-preserving level set advection equation formulated as a scalar sign-distance function is proposed. Abstract:In this paper, a lattice Boltzmann model with dynamic grid refinement is proposed for immiscible ternary flows, which is capable of conserving the total mass and preserving the volume of each phase. The application of interpolation schemes in adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) techniques results in the violation of the total mass of the fluids system within the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) framework. In the present model, a source term with two free parameters is introduced into the interface capturing equation, which can be determined by the mass conservation and the volume preservation properties. A piecewise constant function has been deliberately incorporated into the source term in order to avoid the appearance of an unphysical fluid at the interface of other two fluids. Based on a block-structured AMR method, the governing equations for phase-field variables and flow hydrodynamic properties are solved by the finite-difference multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) LBM. Simulations of several typical problems are performed in order to evaluate the accuracy and applicability of the proposed model. The numerical results demonstrate that the present model can conserve both mass and volume at the same time as well as reduce numerical dispersion in the bulk region.

Abstract:The flux reconstruction (FR) formulation can unify several popular discontinuous basis high-order methods for fluid dynamics, including the discontinuous Galerkin method, in a simple, efficient form. An arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) extension to the high-order FR scheme is developed here for moving mesh fluid flow problems. The ALE Navier-Stokes equations are derived by introducing a grid velocity. The conservation law are spatially discretised on hybrid unstructured meshes using Huynh's scheme (Huynh 2007) on anisotropic elements (quadrilaterals) and using Correction Procedure via Reconstruction scheme on isotropic elements (triangles). The temporal discretisation uses both explicit and implicit treatments. The mesh movement is described by node positions given as a time series, instead of an analytical formula. The geometric conservation law is tested using free stream preservation problem. An isentropic vortex propagation test case is performed to show the high-order accuracy of the developed method on both moving and fixed hybrid meshes. Flow around an oscillating cylinder shows the capability of the method to solve moving boundary viscous flow problems, with the numeric method further verified by comparison of the result on a smoothly deforming mesh and a rigid moving mesh.

Abstract:The fluid flow is solved through the finite element discretization of the Navier–Stokes equations, using the semi‐Lagrangian method to treat the advective term. A decoupled mesh method based on front‐tracking is used to simulate two‐phase flows. A coalescence model based on geometric parameters is introduced, and coalescence of circular and Taylor bubbles is presented. This work aims at presenting a new computational approach to study two and three dimensional two‐phase flows and two dimensional coalescence phenomenon using direct numerical simulation. The flows are modeled by the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations, which are approximated by the finite element method. The Galerkin formulation is used to discretize the Navier–Stokes equations in the spatial domain and the semi‐Lagrangian method is used to discretize the material derivative. In order to satisfy the Ladyzhenskaya–Babuška–Brezzi condition, high‐order stable pair of elements are used, with pressure and velocity fields being calculated on different degrees of freedom in the unstructured mesh nodes. The interface is modeled by an unfitted adaptive moving mesh, where interface nodes are tracked in a Lagrangian fashion and moved with the velocity solution of the fluid motion equations. The surface tension is computed using the interface curvature and the gradient of a Heaviside function, and added in the momentum equations as a body force. In order to avoid undesired spurious modes at the interface due to high property ratios, a smooth transition between fluid properties is defined on the interface region. Several benchmark tests have been carried out to validate the proposed approach, and the obtained results have demonstrated agreement with analytical solutions and numerical results reported in the literature. A coalescence model is also proposed based on geometric criteria and results show interesting dynamics.

Abstract:We propose an alternative method to implement the contact angle boundary condition on a solid wall and apply it in hybrid lattice-Boltzmann finite-difference simulations of two-phase flows with immersed surfaces in which the flow equations are solved by the lattice-Boltzmann method and the interface equations are solved by the finite-difference method. Using the hyperbolic tangent profile of the order parameter across an interface in phase-field theory, we were able to obtain its unknown value at a ghost point from the information at only one point in the fluid domain. This is in contrast with existing approaches relying on interpolations involving several points. The special feature allows it to be more easily implemented on immersed surfaces cutting through the grid lines. It was properly incorporated into the framework of the hybrid lattice-Boltzmann finite-difference simulation, and applied successfully for several problems with different levels of complexity. First, the equilibrium shapes of a droplet on a sphere with different contact angles and radii were studied under cylindrical geometry and a good agreement with theoretical predictions was found. Preliminary studies on a three-dimensional droplet spreading on a sphere were also performed and the results agreed well with the corresponding axisymmetric results. Second, the spreading of a two-dimensional drop on an embedded inclined wall with a given contact angle was investigated and the results matched those on a flat wall at the domain boundary under the same condition. Third, capillary filling in a cylindrical tube was studied and the speed of the interface in the tube was found to follow Washburn's law. Fourth, a droplet impacting on a sphere was investigated and several different outcomes were captured depending on the Reynolds number, the viscosity ratio, and the wettability and radius of the sphere. Finally, the proposed method was shown to be capable of studying even more complicated problems involving the interaction between a droplet and multiple objects of different sizes and contact angles.
