Abstract: With progress in quantum technologies, the field of quantum networks has emerged as an important area of research. In the last few years, there has been substantial progress in understanding the correlations present in quantum networks. In this article, we study cloning as a prospective method to generate three party quantum networks which can be further used to create larger networks. We analyze various quantum network topologies that can be created using cloning transformations. This would be useful in the situations wherever the availability of entangled pairs is limited. In addition to that we focus on the problem of distinguishing networks created by cloning from those which are created by distributing independently generated entangled pairs. We find that there are several states which cannot be distinguished using the Finner inequalities in the standard way. For such states, we propose an extension to the existing Finner inequality for triangle networks by further increasing the number of observers from three to four or six depending on the network topology. This takes into account the additional correlations that exist in the case of cloned networks. In the last part of the article we have used tripartite mutual information to distinguish cloned networks from networks created by independent sources and have further used squashed entanglement as a measure to quantify the amount of dependence in the cloned networks.

Abstract:We study the phase-covariant quantum cloning machine for qudits, i.e., the input states in a d-level quantum system have complex coefficients with arbitrary phase but constant module. A cloning unitary transformation is proposed. After optimizing the fidelity between input state and single qudit reduced density operator of output state, we obtain the optimal fidelity for 1 to 2 phase-covariant quantum cloning of qudits and the corresponding cloning transformation.

Abstract:Since the initial discovery of the Wootters-Zurek no-cloning theorem, a wide variety of quantum cloning machines have been proposed aiming at imperfect but optimal cloning of quantum states within its own context. Remarkably, most previous studies have employed the Bures fidelity or the Hilbert-Schmidt norm as the figure of merit to characterize the quality of the corresponding cloning scenarios. However, in many situations, what we truly care about is the relevant information about certain parameters encoded in quantum states. In this work, we investigate the multiple phase estimation problem in the framework of quantum cloning machines, from the perspective of quantum Fisher information matrix (QFIM). Focusing on the generalized $d$-dimensional equatorial states, we obtain the analytical formulas of QFIM for both universal quantum cloning machine (UQCM) and phase-covariant quantum cloning machine (PQCM), and prove that PQCM indeed performs better than UQCM in terms of QFIM. We highlight that our method can be generalized to arbitrary cloning schemes where the fidelity between the single-copy input and output states is input-state independent. Furthermore, the attainability of the quantum Cram\'er-Rao bound is also explicitly discussed.

Abstract:We experimentally realize the 1 -> 2 optimal universal quantum cloning machine for arbitrary qubits and the ancilla-free 1 -> 3 optimal phase-covariant quantum cloning machine for x-y equatorial qubits, which were constructed by Zou et al. [Phys. Lett. A 366, 36 (2007)]. The qubits are represented by the polarization states of photons prepared from the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The copies of each machine are shown to have almost equal fidelities conditioned on fourfold coincidences.
Multi-strange baryon production in Au+Au collisions at top RHIC energy as a probe of bulk properties

Abstract:We report STAR preliminary results on multi-strange baryon production in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV at RHIC. Its implication for the formation of a new state of matter is discussed. The system size dependence on the production of strange baryons is investigated to study the onset of strange quark equilibration in the medium. The nuclear modification factor of Lambda, Xi and Omega is also presented. Its suppression at p_T>3 GeV/c supports the formation of a dense interacting medium at RHIC. The spectra of multi-strange baryons reveal that within a hydro-inspired model, they may decouple prior than lighter particles and that their flow may be mostly developed at a partonic level. This idea is emphasized by the measurement of the v_2 of Xi+AntiXi and Omega+AntiOmega whose behaviour is close to the Lambda+AntiLambda baryon elliptic flow in the intermediate p_T region where a constituent quark scaling of v_2 is observed.

Abstract:While the no-cloning theorem, which forbids the perfect copying of quantum states, is well-known as one of the defining features of quantum mechanics, the question of how well the theory allows a state to be cloned is yet to be completely solved. In this paper, rigorous solutions to the problem of M to N asymmetric cloning of qudits are obtained in a number of interesting cases. The central result is the solution to the 1 to N universal asymmetric qudit cloning problem for which the exact trade-off in the fidelities of the clones for every N and d is derived. Analogous results are proven for qubits when M=N-1. We also consider state-dependent 1 to N qubit cloning, providing a general parametrization in terms of a Heisenberg star Hamiltonian. In all instances, we determine the feasibility of implementing the cloning economically, i.e., without an ancilla, and determine the dimension of the ancilla when an economic implementation is not possible.

Every machine is optimal in the sense that it achieves the optimal bound of the single copy shrinking factor. Unlike in the case of pure state cloning, the single copy shrinking factor does not uniquely determine the cloning map in the case of mixed state cloning.

Abstract:We present Quantum Cloning Machines (QCM) that transform N identical qubits into $M>N$ identical copies and we prove that the fidelity (quality) of these copies is optimal. The connection between cloning and measurement is discussed in detail. When the number of clones M tends towards infinity, the fidelity of each clone tends towards the optimal fidelity that can be obtained by a measurement on the input qubits. More generally, the QCM are universal devices to translate quantum information into classical information.

Abstract:In quantum mechanics, although the no-cloning theorem forbids us to clone an arbitrary quantum state ideally, it is still possible to partially reproduce an unknown quantum state by using a phase cloning machine. Since the no-cloning theorem guarantees the safety of quantum key distribution (QKD), resulting in the famous Bennett-Brassard 1984 (BB84) protocol, phase cloning of BB84 states increases the probability to eavesdrop the transmitted information between correspondents, forcing us to recheck the security of the QKD protocol. In this work, we realize an optimal phase cloning machine for BB84 states in a superconducting quantum bit (qubit). The lowest three energy levels in this system are exploited as logical qubits to demonstrate this cloning procedure. Two microwaves are used to prepare and clone the states. In order to achieve the maximum fidelity, we use the state tomography to readout the experimental results. It is found that the state information is well preserved during this cloning process. The average fidelity between input and output states is 83.92%, making this a valid quantum cloning machine. (C) 2016 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

Abstract:Quantum cloning machines for equatorial qubits are studied. For the case of a one to two phase-covariant quantum cloning machine, we present the networks consisting of quantum gates to realize the quantum cloning transformations. The copied equatorial qubits are shown to be separable by using Peres-Horodecki criterion. The optimal one to M phase-covariant quantum cloning transformations are given.

Abstract:We study the problem of universal quantum cloning -- taking several identical copies of a pure but unknown quantum state and producing further copies. While it is well known that it is impossible to perfectly reproduce the state, how well the copies can be cloned can be quantified using the fidelity. We examine how individual fidelities can be traded against each other, and how different fidelity measures can be incorporated. The broadly applicable formalism into which we transform the cloning problem is described as a series of quadratic constraints which are amenable to mathematical and computational scrutiny. As such, we reproduce all known results on optimal universal cloning, and push the recent results on asymmetric cloning much further, giving new trade-off relations between fidelities for broad classes of optimal cloning machines. We also provide substantial evidence that motivates why other parameter ranges (number of input copies) have not, and will not, yield to similar analysis.

Abstract:Following the work of Niu and Griffiths, in \emph{Phys.Rev.A 58, 4377(1998)}, we shall investigate the problem, how to design the optimal quantum cloning machines (QCMs) for qubit system, with the help of Bloch-sphere representation. In stead of the quality factor there, the Fiuráusek's optimal condition, where the optimal cloning machine should maximize a convex mixture of the average fidelity, is used as the optimality criterion in present protocol. Almost all of the known optimal QCMs in previous works, the cloning for states with fixed polar angle, the phase-covariant cloning, the universal QCMs, the cloning for two arbitrary pure states, and the mirror phase-covariant cloning, should be discussed in a systematic way. The known results, the optimal fidelities for various input ensembles according to different optimality criteria, are recovered here. Our present scheme also offers a general way of constructing the unitary transformation to realize the optimal cloning.

Abstract:In this paper we establish a deep connection between the 3 qubit one-to-two phase-covariant quantum cloning network of Fuchs et al. [C. Fuchs, N. Gisin, R.B. Griffiths, C.S. Niu, and A. Peres, Phys. Rev. A 56 no 4, 1163 (1997)], and its economic 2 qubit counterpart due to Niu and Griffiths [Phys.Rev. A 60 no 4, 2764 (1999)]. A general, necessary and sufficient criterion is derived in order to characterize the reducibility of 3 qubit cloners to 2 qubit cloners. When this criterion is fulfilled, economic cloning is possible. We show that the optimal isotropic or universal 3 qubit cloning machine is not reducible to a 2 qubit cloner.

Abstract:We show that no universal quantum cloning machine exists that can broadcast an arbitrary mixed qubit with a constant fidelity. Based on this result, we investigate the dependent quantum cloner in the sense that some parameter of the input qubit rho(s)(theta,omega,lambda) is regarded as constant in the fidelity. For the case of constant omega, we establish the 1 -> 2 optimal symmetric dependent cloner with a fidelity 1/2. It is also shown that the 1 -> M optimal quantum cloning machine for pure qubits is also optimal for mixed qubits, when lambda is the unique parameter in the fidelity. For general N -> M broadcasting of mixed qubits, the situation is very different.

Abstract:In this paper we demonstrate that optimal $1\ensuremath{\rightarrow}M$ phase-covariant cloning quantum cloning is available via free dynamical evolution of spin networks. By properly designing the network and the couplings between spins, we show that optimal $1\ensuremath{\rightarrow}M$ phase-covariant cloning can be achieved if the initial state is prepared as a specific symmetric state. Especially, when $M$ is an odd number, the optimal phase-covariant cloning can be achieved without ancillas. Moreover, we demonstrate that the same framework is capable for optimal $1\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2$ universal cloning.

Abstract:When prior partial information about a state to be cloned is available, it can be cloned with a fidelity higher than that of universal quantum cloning. We experimentally verify this intriguing relationship between the cloning fidelity and the prior information by reporting the first experimental optimal quantum state-dependent cloner, using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. Our experiments may further cast important implications into many quantum information processing protocols.

Abstract:We consider the entanglement manipulation capabilities of the universal covariant quantum cloner or quantum processor circuit for quantum bits. We investigate its use for cloning a member of a bipartite or a genuine tripartite entangled state of quantum bits. We find that for bipartite pure entangled states a nontrivial behavior of concurrence appears, while for GHZ entangled states a possibility of the partial extraction of bipartite entanglement can be achieved.
