Abstract:In this paper, to reduce the communication burden between the controller and the actuator, we propose an event triggered control design scheme for the spacecraft attitude stabilization problem. The main idea is that we design the controller and the triggering event simultaneously such that the controller can effectively compensate for the measurement errors caused by the event-triggering mechanism. Two different kinds of triggering events, i.e. the fixed threshold strategy and the relative threshold strategy, are considered according to practical situations. Through Lyapunov analysis, it is shown that the proposed event-trigger control schemes guarantee that the spacecraft attitude tracking error and the angular velocity error will exponentially converge towards an adjustable set around zero.
Multiple Task-Space Robot Control: Sense Locally, Act Globally

Abstract:Task-space sensory feedback information such as visual feedback is used in many modern robot control systems as it improves robustness to model uncertainty. However, existing sensory feedback control schemes are only valid locally in a finite task space within a limited sensing zone where singularity of the Jacobian matrix is avoided. In this paper, the global stability problem of task-space sensory feedback control system is formulated and solved. The proposed method is based on multiple regional feedback information where each feedback information is employed in a local region. The combination of the local feedback covers the entire workspace and thus guarantees the global movement of the robot. In addition, the switching from one feedback information to another is embedded in the controller without using any hard or discontinuous switching. Experimental results are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed controller.
A Haptic Shared Control Architecture for Tracking of a Moving Object.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a haptic shared control framework that integrates human and robotic control to track moving objects. Uncertainty in object detection is estimated with a Kalman filter. An obstacle avoidance algorithm is designed in conjunction with the artificial potential field method. The operator input and robot's historical trajectory are taken into consideration and used to infer the human and robot's control willingness according to the principle of maximum entropy. The fuzzy inference method is used to simulate human decision-making behavior and blend agents' control. A pouring task and a docking task were designed to compare the proposed method with existing control methods. Based on the objective evaluation results, the proposed method was superior to manual control and shared control based on piecewise functions. Compared to manual control, the proposed method reduced completion time, operator input, and cognitive load by 17%, 25%, and 20% on Task1, respectively, and by 23%, 17%, and 28% on Task2, respectively. Compared to automatic control, the proposed method was more practicable although some performance indicators were less inferior. The subjective evaluation results indicated that the proposed method made it easier for agents to perceive each other's intentions and promoted mutual trust.

Perceptual Scale Expansion: A Natural Design for Improving the Precision of Motor Control.

Abstract:Space perception is systematically biased. Few theories of spatial bias address the possible functional advantages of mechanisms that produce spatial biases. The scale expansion hypothesis proposes that many spatial biases are due to the perceptual expansion of visual angles, which acts somewhat like a natural magnifying glass in vision. The present study examined the idea that visual expansion may improve motor precision (i.e., reduce motor variability) in movements when using closed-loop control but not when using open-loop control. Experiment 1 tested this idea in an online tracking task (closed-loop control), whereas Experiment 2 tested it in a fast-hitting task (open-loop control). The results were consistent with the hypothesis. To rule out the effect of the task difference (i.e., tracking vs fast hitting), Experiment 3 examined the effect of visual expansion on the variability of motor performance in a line-reproduction task. The control type (closed-loop or open-loop) was manipulated by the form of visual feedback (online or offline). The results were again consistent with the present assumption. Taken together, the present data suggest that perceptual expansion in vision improves motor-control precision when using closed-loop control (but not when using open-loop control), which supports the scale expansion hypothesis. In addition, the present findings also improve our understanding of how visual error amplification affects motor control.

Abstract:Manipulation in a densely cluttered environment creates complex challenges in perception to close the control loop, many of which are due to the sophisticated physical interaction between the environment and the manipulator. Drawing from biological sensory-motor control, to handle the task in such a scenario, tactile sensing can be used to provide an additional dimension of the rich contact information from the interaction for decision making and action selection to manoeuvre towards a target. In this paper, a new tactile-based motion planning and control framework based on bioinspiration is proposed and developed for a robot manipulator to manoeuvre in a cluttered environment. An iterative two-stage machine learning approach is used in this framework: an autoencoder is used to extract important cues from tactile sensory readings while a reinforcement learning technique is used to generate optimal motion sequence to efficiently reach the given target. The framework is implemented on a KUKA LBR iiwa robot mounted with a SynTouch BioTac tactile sensor and tested with real-life experiments. The results show that the system is able to move the end-effector through the cluttered environment to reach the target effectively.

Abstract:It is interesting to observe from human visually guided tasks that visual feedback is not used for the entire movement, but only at end phases when our hand is near the target. We are able to move our hand from an initial position that is not within our field of view and transit smoothly and easily into visual feedback when the target is near. Inspired by this natural action, this paper presents a new task-space adaptive controller with dual feedback information. The proposed controller consists of a Cartesian-space region reaching controller at the initial stage and a vision based tracking controller that is only activated when the end effector enters an image region. A new potential energy function is proposed such that the image region can be fixed as the field of view of the camera and does not have to vary with the desired trajectory. The proposed task-space controller can transit smoothly from Cartesian-space reaching to vision-space tracking control. The stability of the closed-loop system is analyzed with consideration of the nonlinear dynamics. The proposed adaptive controller is implemented on an industrial robot and experimental results are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed controller.

Abstract:The problem of designing a robust controller for a multivariable system with significant uncertainty is considered. In particular, the class of uncertainty is represented by a set of finite demensional linear time-invariant models of the system. A physically realizable, finite demensional linear time-invariant controller in unit feedback configuration is designed such that the resulting feedback system simultaneously satisfies performance objectives for all models in the set. The performance objectives considered include not only stability but also regulation, tracking, weak interaction and desirable transcient behaviour. A new approach to a robust controller design which reaches the above objectives is developed in a frequency domain setting, and its effectiveness of this approach is verified by the design and simulation of a papermachine control system. The result exhibits quite satisfactory performances and strong robustness.

Abstract:An uncertainty estimation and compensation can improve the performance of control systems due to structured and unstructured uncertainty. This paper presents a robust task-space control approach using an adaptive Taylor series uncertainty estimator for electrically driven robot manipulators. It is worth noting that not only the lumped uncertainty is estimated and employed in the indirect form of robust controller, but also the upper bound of approximation error is estimated to form a robustifying term and the asymptotic convergence of tracking error and its time derivative are proven based on stability analysis. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed controller is shown through simulation and comparison with two valuable control schemes applied on the Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm (SCARA) robot manipulator.

Abstract:Control of nonlinear dynamical systems is a complex and multifaceted process. Essential elements of many engineering systems include high fidelity physics-based modeling, offline trajectory planning, feedback control design, and data acquisition strategies to reduce uncertainties. This article proposes an optimization centric perspective which couples these elements in a cohesive framework. We introduce a novel use of hyper-differential sensitivity analysis to understand the sensitivity of feedback controllers to parametric uncertainty in physics-based models used for trajectory planning. These sensitivities provide a foundation to define an optimal experimental design which seeks to acquire data most relevant in reducing demand on the feedback controller. Our proposed framework is illustrated on the Zermelo navigation problem and a hypersonic trajectory control problem using data from NASA's X-43 hypersonic flight tests.

Task Space Contouring Error Estimation and Precision Iterative Control of Robotic Manipulators

Abstract:The task space contouring performance is significant for the machining accuracy of industrial robotic manipulators, but the contouring control of end-effector which is important in the industry has received scant attention. In this letter, a novel task space contouring error estimation and control scheme is developed to address the end-effector precision contouring problem of robotic manipulators. In order to quantify manipulator contouring performance, a 6-DOF synchronized contouring error is defined in the task space. Based on the definition, an optimization problem is constructed and solved to achieve high precision contouring error estimation. The proposed method shows excellent estimation accuracy even under extreme contouring conditions, which is the prerequisite for accurate contouring control. Then the solved contouring error is iteratively compensated into the end-effector reference in a feedforward way to achieve contouring error reduction. The effectiveness of the proposed method is derived theoretically under the assumption of small error and nonsingularity. Comparative experiments are conducted on an industrial manipulator. Quantitative results on different extreme trajectories demonstrate that the proposed control scheme not only has advantages in control stability and implementation simplicity, but also outperforms traditional joint space iterative learning control and cross-coupled iterative learning control on the end-effector contouring accuracy. The proposed method actually provides a practical solution to high-precision contouring applications for industrial manipulators.
Space Robot Sensor Noise Amelioration Using Trajectory Shaping

Abstract:Robots in space are necessarily extremely light and lack structural stiffness resulting in natural frequencies of resonance so low as to reside inside the attitude controller's bandwidth. A variety of input trajectories can be used to drive a controller's attempt to ameliorate the control-structural interactions where feedback is provided by low-quality, noisy sensors. Traditionally, step functions are used as the ideal input trajectory. However, step functions are not ideal in many applications, as they are discontinuous. Alternative input trajectories are explored in this manuscript and applied to an example system that includes a flexible appendage attached to a rigid main body. The main body is controlled by a reaction wheel. The equations of motion of the flexible appendage, rigid body, and reaction wheel are derived. A benchmark feedback controller is developed to account for the rigid body modes. Additional filters are added to compensate for the system's flexible modes. Sinusoidal trajectories are autonomously generated to feed the controller. Benchmark feedforward whiplash compensation is additionally implemented for comparison. The method without random errors with the smallest error is the sinusoidal trajectory method, which showed a 97.39% improvement when compared to the baseline response when step trajectories were commanded, while the sinusoidal method was inferior to traditional step trajectories when sensor noise and random errors were present.

Singularity-robust task-space tracking control of robot

Abstract:Singularity issue has been a long standing problem in task-space control of robot. It is commonly assumed in the theoretical analysis of task-space control system that the robot is operating in a finite task space such that singularity problem can be avoided. This limits the potential workspace of the robot when task-space control is employed. In this paper, a singularity-robust task-space controller is proposed for tracking control of robot manipulator. The proposed controller consists of a joint-space position controller that is activated when the robot is near singular configurations, and a task-space tracking controller that is used when the robot leaves the singular region. Therefore, the robot can start from the singular regions and transit smoothly from joint space to task space. It can also enter the singular region during the course of movement. The stability of the closed-loop system is analyzed with consideration of the singularity issue. Experimental results are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed controller.

Abstract:In this paper, we design a novel robust control method to reduce the trajectory tracking errors of the SCARA robot with uncertainties including parameters such as uncertainty of the mechanical system and external disturbance, which are time-varying and nonlinear. Then, we propose a deterministic form of the model-based robust control algorithm to deal with the uncertainties. The proposed control algorithm is composed of two parts according to the assumed upper limit of the system uncertainties: one is the traditional proportional-derivative control, and the other is the robust control based on the Lyapunov method, which has the characteristics of model-based and error-based. The stability of the proposed control algorithm is proved by the Lyapunov method theoretically, which shows the system can maintain uniformly bounded and uniformly ultimately bounded. The experimental platform includes the rapid controller prototyping cSPACE, which is designed to reduce programming time and to improve the efficiency of the practical operation. Moreover, we adopt different friction models to investigate the effect of friction on robot performance in robot joints. Finally, numerical simulation and experimental results indicate that the control algorithm proposed in this paper has desired control performance on the SCARA robot.

Abstract:Journal of Vibration and Control, Ahead of Print. The robotic arm is a complicated system with multiple inputs and outputs, strong coupling, containing uncertainties and nonlinearities. This study proposes a new practical robust control method based on the dynamics model and tracking error, including a model- and error-based proportional-differential feedback term and an error-based robust term. Specifically, the dynamics of the system are modeled using the Lagrangian method. Uncertainties are presumed to be time-varying but limited. Based on the Lyapunov method, the proposed controller has theoretically demonstrated the controlled system with uniform boundedness (UB) and uniform ultimate boundedness (UUB). Furthermore, the radius of the ultimately bounded hypersphere is arbitrarily small based on selecting appropriate design parameters. Based on the two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) planar robotic arm experimental platform, the self-developed rapid controller prototype CSPACE-RT is intended to eliminate tedious programming or debugging, significantly simplifying the experimental process. Finally, numerical simulation and experiment results verified the excellent control performance of the suggested controller.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the task-space consensus problem for multiple robotic systems with both the uncertain kinematics and dynamics and address two main issues, i.e., the separation of the kinematic and dynamic loops in the case of no task-space velocity measurement and the quantification of the manipulability of the system. We propose an observer-based adaptive controller to achieve the manipulable consensus without relying on the measurement of task-space velocities, and also formalize the concept of manipulability to quantify the degree of adjustability of the consensus value. The proposed adaptive controller employs a new distributed observer that does not rely on the joint velocity and a new kinematic parameter adaptation law with a distributed adaptive kinematic regressor matrix that is driven by both the observation and consensus errors. In addition, it is shown that the proposed controller has the separation property, which yields an adaptive kinematic controller that is applicable to most industrial/commercial robots. The performance of the proposed observer-based adaptive schemes is shown by numerical simulations.

Abstract:This paper focuses on devising a control policy that is inspired by human strategy to enable robots to perform surface–surface contact between a hand-held object (e.g. a box) and the environment (e.g. table). We assume the object’s shape is partially known and consider uncertainties in both the environment and the object grasp. Our analysis on ten untrained subjects indicates that during this task: (1) the subjects start decreasing the angular velocity before the complete alignment (in contrast to existing approaches), and (2) they do not control the contact force to remain at a fixed value. Our study is also consistent with the hypothesis that the subjects determine an over-estimate of the relative angle between the object in hand and the environment. Based on these observations we propose a novel control policy, called Surface-Surface Contact Primitive (SSCP), which can perform the surface–surface alignment task with only partial information about the hand-held object and the environment. Furthermore, SSCP only requires a rough estimate of the surface normal vector and does not rely on either the estimation of contact type (i.e. point or edge contact) or locations of contact points. We evaluate the performance of the proposed controller on a set of robot experiments using two seven-degree-of-freedom robots, one for imposing uncertainty to the environment, and the other to perform the experiment. We show the applicability of the controller on four objects with different geometries, its generalization to four different surface materials, and its robustness to uncertainty in environment and grasp as well as external perturbations.

Abstract:This article focuses on the tracking control issue of robotic systems with dynamic uncertainties. To enhance tracking accuracy in a robotic manipulator with uncertainties, an adaptive fuzzy full-state feedback control is proposed. In view of output-feedback control with unknown states, a high-gain observer is employed to estimate unknown states. Considering the particular requirement that output of systems should be constrained in some practical working fields, we further design adaptive fuzzy full-state and output-feedback control schemes with output constraint to ensure that output maintains in constrained regions. By applying the Lyapunov theory, it is guaranteed that closed-loop systems are semiglobally uniformly ultimately bounded (SGUUB). Tangent-type barrier Lyapunov function is used for the controller design with output constraint and ensure stability. Finally, the effectiveness of our proposed methods is shown through both simulation examples and experimental results, comparative experiments in Baxter robot are proposed for evaluating the practicability of our proposed methods in actual applications.
Hybrid Controller for Robot Manipulators in Task-Space with Visual-Inertial Feedback

Abstract:This paper presents a visual-inertial-based control strategy to address the task space control problem of robot manipulators. To this end, an observer-based hybrid controller is employed to control end-effector motion. In addition, a hybrid observer is introduced for a visual-inertial navigation system to close the control loop directly at the Cartesian space by estimating the end-effector pose. Accordingly, the robot tip is equipped with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and a stereo camera to provide task-space feedback information for the proposed observer. It is demonstrated through the Lyapunov stability theorem that the resulting closed-loop system under the proposed observer-based controller is globally asymptotically stable. Besides this notable merit (global asymptotic stability), the proposed control method eliminates the need to compute inverse kinematics and increases trajectory tracking accuracy in task-space. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed control scheme are evaluated through computer simulations, where the proposed control structure is applied to a 6 degrees-of-freedom long-reach hydraulic robot manipulator.
