Abstract:There are many other kinds of carbon-based nanostructures such as carbon nanorings, nanosprings, and nanocones, etc. Carbon nanorings can be imaged as the bending of straight single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) into rings by connecting their two ends. A carbon nanospring (n, m) with one pitch of length is formed by bending a SWCNT (n, m) into a closed circular shape that is cut into two pieces along the middle of two adjacent cross-sections, with one end fixed and the other stretched along the helical axis, which is perpendicular to the circular-centerline plane of the initial carbon nanoring, while a carbon nanocone can be viewed as formed by rolling up an initial equilibrium fan-shaped graphite sheet into a conical shape. This chapter aims to show the mechanical properties of these kinds of carbon-based nanostructures, such as structural stability and critical buckling load.
