Abstract:Psychological states are known to be related to human behaviors, and investigating the relationship between psychological states and unsafe behaviors of workers may shed light on how to better prevent accidents on the construction jobsites. One challenge of such investigation is that it is difficult to track workers' behaviors and psychological states on a construction job site, because (1) psychological states are difficult to be monitored timely and accurately on site due to the lack of non-interruptive monitoring methods and workers' resistance to be monitored; and (2) monitoring unsafe behaviors usually requires extra on-site staff, which may lead to more safety risk. To address this problem, a virtual environment-based experimental method is proposed. The collected data was analyzed to reveal the relationship between workers' psychological states and unsafe behaviors, which can help improve safety training and safety management on a construction jobsite by providing the evidence of emotion's influence on unsafe behaviors and to what extent those emotions can affect behavior.
