Abstract:A novel and facile template-free method was presented to fabricate a porous g-C3N4 (graphite-like carbon nitaide) by combining ultrasonic treatment with hydrothermal modification in the presence of sulfuric acid. Particle size analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) were adopted to analyze its structure, morphology and properties. And the photocatalytic activities of the as-prepared samples were also evaluated by decomposing methyl orange (MO) and Rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous solution under visible light illumination. The results show that combining ultrasonic treatment with hydrothermal modification is favorable to improve the porosity of g-C3N4, which can increase the ability to absorb pollutants and inhibit the recombination of photo-generated carriers, thereby enhancing the visible-light photocatalytic property.
Oxygen-containing Groups and P Doped Porous Carbon Nitride Nanosheets Towards Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity.

Abstract:Metal-free polymer graphite carbon nitride (CN) is a promising photocatalyst that has garnered significant research attention. However, unmodified CN possesses several shortcomings such as low specific surface area, poor dispersibility in water, and rapid photogenerated electron-hole recombination, which have severely impacted its mass adoption. Here, this study proposed a two-step heat treatment method to incorporate P dopant and the containing-oxygen groups successively into CN. The final product, denoted as PO-CN, possessed a porous ultrathin nanosheet-like morphology. The introduction of P dopant altered the intrinsic electronic structure of CN. Meanwhile, the presence of oxygen-containing groups improved the dispersibility of PO-CN in water. Also, it led to the formation of a porous ultrathin structure that could provide more active sites. Through the synergistic effects of these two methods, PO-CN demonstrated superior photocatalytic performance compared to the unmodified counterpart. Based on the collective results obtained experimentally and theoretically, PO-CN possessed a porous ultrathin structure, low resistance, and low carrier recombination. The results show an optimal hydrogen evolution rate of PO-CN (997.7 mol h(-1) g(-1)), which was 11.2 times and 3.22 times that of the CN (88.89 mol h(-1) g(-1)) and PCN (310.3 mol h(-1) g(-1)). Moreover, PO-CN was then used in the degradation of Rhodamine B, and a degradation kinetic constant (k) of 0.15009 was calculated, which was 18.42 times and 8.22 times higher as compared to those of CN (0.00815) and PCN (0.01826). Hence, this work provides a new strategy for the alteration of the morphology and electronic structure of CN.
Enhanced photocatalytic activity and optical response mechanism of porous graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets

Abstract:Bulk graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), fragmentized g-C3N4, and porous g-C3N4 nanosheets have been prepared by a facile solid-state reaction. All samples have been systematically characterized by X-ray diffraction technique, transmission electron microscope, flourier transform infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, UV–vis spectra and nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements. The photocatalytic performance of all g-C3N4 samples was evaluated by the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) aqueous solution under a visible light irradiation. The porous g-C3N4 nanosheets exhibit the highest efficiency for degradation of RhB, which can be close to 100 % at 30 min. The degradation efficiency using bulk g-C3N4 and fragmentized g-C3N4 is only 85 % and 96 % at 60 min, respectively. The photocatalytic activity was investigated in detail to explore their optical response mechanism.

Abstract:Porous g-C 3 N 4 composed of nanosheets (p-gCN-NS) was synthesized through firstly grinding the hydrochloric acid-treated melamine with ammonium chloride (NH 4 Cl) and then calcining the mixture at 550° C for 2 h. The photocatalytic properties were determined by degrading Rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline (TC) aqueous solution (10 mg/L, 100 mL). Results show that the crystallinity, size and thickness of g-C 3 N 4 in p-gCN-NS reduced dramatically compared with those in g-C 3 N 4 sample synthesized without the addition of NH 4 Cl (gCN). Specific surface area of p-gCN-NS was 63.65 m 2 ·g −1 , which was 6.7 times that of gCN. After photocatalysis for 50 min, the degradation rate of RhB achieved 99.32% by p-gCN-NS (100 mg), whose reaction rate constant ( k = 0.09317 min −1 ) was 10.6 times higher than that of gCN. p-gCN-NS also exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for degrading colorless tetracycline aqueous solution. The significant improvement of photocatalytic performance can be credited to the reduced sized and thickness of g-C 3 N 4 , higher specific surface area and pore structure, as well as the weakened recombination rate of photogenerated electron–hole pairs in p-gCN-NS. This work provides a feasible and facile method for synthesis porous g-C 3 N 4 composed of nanosheets with excellent photocatalytic performance.

Accurate design of porous g-C3N4+x with greatly extended visible-light response for enhanced photocatalytic performance and mechanism insight for environmental remediation

Abstract:Nitrogen-rich graphite carbon nitride has attracted considerable attention due to its low band gap and widespread potential application. Herein, a series of porous g-C3N4+x materials are developed by pyrolysis of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (C2H4N4) and mesoporous silica template (KIT-6). The pore diameters can be precisely tuned by controlling the proportion of C2H4N4 and KIT-6. A variety of characterizations were conducted to analyze the correlation between structure and photocatalytic performance towards the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). It was found that, the synthesized porous g-C3N4+x exhibited a narrower band gap of 1.43 eV, which significantly extended its visible-light responsive range. Moreover, the enhanced N content and adjustable porous diameter effectively increased the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Therefore, remarkably improved photocatalytic activity was achieved, which was 5.2 times higher than that of bulk g-C3N4+x, and presented super stability as well. Additionally, the possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed and verified. These findings shed light on a new facile way to fabricate high-performance photocatalytic materials and provided new opportunities for environmental remediation.
Nanoporous Graphitic Carbon Nitride With Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:Nanoporous g-C3N4 (npg-C3N4) with high surface area was prepared by a bubble-templating method. A higher calcination heating rate and proportion of thiourea can result in a larger surface area and better adsorption and photodegradation activities of npg-C3N4. Compared with the bulk g-C3N4, the adsorption capacity for the target pollutants and photocatalytic degradation and photocurrent performances under visible light irradiation of npg-C3N4 were greatly improved. The optimal photodegradation activity of npg-C3N4 was 3.4 times as high as that of the bulk g-C3N4. The enhanced activities of npg-C3N4 can be attributed to the larger number of surface active sites, improved separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, and higher efficiency of charge immigration.

Abstract:A novel g-C3N4 composite photocatalyst was synthesized by one-step calcination using melamine and different functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) as raw materials. The effect of additives on the photocatalytic performance of the composite g-C3N4 has been investigated. The results showed that the incorporation of functionalized MWCNT led to a porous structure in g-C3N4, increasing the specific surface area and availability of active sites. The addition of hydroxylated/carboxylated MWCNT (HMWCNT/CMWCNT) affected the band structure of g-C3N4 and reduced the band gap. The visible-light photocatalytic degradation efficiency of Rhodamine B (RhB) using g-C3N4 composited with various types and amounts of MWCNT was evaluated. Among them, g-C3N4 with 1 wt% CMWCNT showed the highest photocatalytic degradation efficiency of RhB and still had 92.71% photocatalytic activity after 5 cycles of degradation.

Carbothermal Activation Synthesis of 3D Porous G-C3n4/carbon Nanosheets Composite with Superior Performance for CO2 Photoreduction

Abstract:3D porous nanosheets composite comprised of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and carbon was prepared by a simple pyrolysis and subsequent carbothermal activation method for the first time. The morphology and structural properties of obtained 3D porous g-C3N4/C nanosheets composite was systematically investigated. It was found that the morphology of the g-C3N4/C composite evolved from scroll-like structure to 3D porous nanosheets with ultrathin layer after 6 h activation, meanwhile, the specific surface area and pore volume were significantly increased. Such 3D porous nanosheets like these can function as effective catalysts for a range of gas-phase photocatalytic reactions such as photocatalytic reduction of CO2 with H2O vapor to produce value-added fuels. As a demonstration, outstanding photocatalytic activity was achieved on this 3D porous g-C3N4/C nanosheets composite, where ultra-high CO and CH4 yield of 229 and 112 urnol 1-cat, respectively, were acquired under 7 h simulated solar irradiation, which were 25-fold better than that of bulk g-C3N4. The excellent photocatalytic performance should be attributed to the advantageous structural and compositional features.

Abstract:Ultrathin graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets were synthesized via thermal exfoliation of bulk urea-derived g-C3N4 under an argon atmosphere. As a visible-light responsive photocatalyst, this material exhibits a much superior photocatalytic activity in pollution degradation and H-2 evolution than bulk g-C3N4, as a result of the extended region of visible light response and the enhanced surface area of ultrathin g-C3N4 nanosheets. These findings may provide a promising and facile approach to the design of high-performance photocatalysts.

Abstract:A facile template-free method is presented for the fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) nanoporous bulk graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with an interconnected framework. Various techniques, namely, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, elemental analysis, specific surface area measurements (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method), UV/Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, time-resolved fluorescence decay spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and photoelectrochemical measurements, were adopted to analyze the structures and physicochemical properties of the as-prpared samples. The results show that the nanoporous bulk g-C3N4 with a particle size of ca. 20 m exhibits a high specific surface area, which is ca. 30.9 times higher than that of the original material. The g-C3N4 with such a structure exhibits an improved adsorption capacity for the target pollutants and is readily separable from the photocatalysis reaction system. It is believed that a two-step protonation process plays a key role in the formation of the structure. Furthermore, this 3D nanoporous bulk g-C3N4 also shows more-efficient photogenerated carrier transfer and separation. As a result, the visible-light photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 is significantly enhanced, and the degradation rates of methyl orange (MO) and rhodamine B (RhB) dyes over the nanoporous bulk g-C3N4 are ca. 5.0 and 22.3 times higher, respectively, than that over the original material.

Abstract:The g-C3N4-ZnO composite photocatalysts with various weight percents of ZnO were synthsized by a simple calcination process. The photocatalysts were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), UV-vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy (UV-vis), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The PXRD and HR-TEM results show that the composite materials consist of hexagonal wurzite phase ZnO and g-C3N4. The solid-state UV-vis diffuse reflection spectra show that the absorption edge of the composite materials shifts toward the lower energy region and to longer wavelengths in comparison with pure ZnO and g-C3N4. Remarkably, the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4-ZnO composites has been demonstrated, via photodegradation of Methyl Orange (MO) and p-nitrophenol experiments. The photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4-ZnO for photodegradation of Methyl Orange and p-nitrophenol under visible light irradiation was increased by over 3 and 6 times, respectively, to be much higher than that of single-phase g-C3N4, clearly demonstrating a synergistic effect between ZnO and g-C3N4. The concentrations of Zn2+ in g-C3N4-ZnO system after a photocatalytic reaction at various reaction times were found to be much lower than those for a ZnO system under the same reaction conditions, indicating that the g-C3N4-ZnO composite possesses excellent long-term stability for a photocatalytic reaction in aqueous solutions. Furthermore, a synergistic photocatalysis mechanism between ZnO and g-C3N4 was proposed based on the photodegradation results. Such obviously improved performance of g-C3N4-ZnO can be ascribed mainly to the enhancement of electron-hole separations at the interface of ZnO and g-C3N4.

X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), laser particle analysis, UV-vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS), photoluminescence spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and photoelectrochemical experiment were adopted to analyze the structure and properties of nanoporous g-C3N4 photocatalyst. The photocatalytic activities of the as-prepared samples were also evaluated by decomposing Congo Red (CR) and Rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous solution under visible light illumination. The results show that the as-prepared nanoporous g-C3N4 exhibits high specific surface area, which is about 8.8 times as high as that of the original bulk one, and also shows more efficient exciton collection and charge transfer. Therefore, the visible photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 is significantly improved, and the decomposition rate of congo red is increased from 0.03 to 0.32 h(-1). Furthermore, this photocatalyst also displays a selective feature in photocatalysis due to its positive surface charges determined by protonation treatment. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Hydrothermally Induced Oxygen Doping of Graphitic Carbon Nitride with a Highly Ordered Architecture and Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:As an amorphous or semicrystalline material, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3 N4 ) displays poor photocatalytic activity owing to rapid recombination of the photogenerated charge carriers, which is mainly caused by a high density of defects in the graphitic structure. In this work, a porous O-doped g-C3 N4 (P-CNO) nanosheet with a highly ordered architecture is fabricated by introducing a novel hydrothermal treatment to the precursor before the final thermal condensation. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate (HER) and HER per surface area of P-CNO are 13.9 and 1.7 times higher than that of bulk g-C3 N4 . The improved photocatalytic activity is ascribed to a synergistic effect of O doping, a porous sheet-like morphology, and increased crystallinity. This work also provides a new approach for the synthesis of other polymer-based photocatalysts with high crystallinity and excellent performance.
Synthesis of Porous TiO2/g-C3N4 Nanocomposites with Enhanced Visible-Light Photocatalytic Properties

Abstract:A network structured porous g-C3N4 with TiO2 nanoparticles uniformly loaded on the surface was fabricated by a simple hydrothermal method. X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) were adopted to analyze the structure-property relationship of samples. The results show that the formation of network pore structure in g-C3N4 matrix is mainly induced by the protonation of base functionalities (-C-N-), which is highly dependent on the concentration of Ti(SO4)(2) aqueous solution. The uniformly and close interface between these two components is favorable for the highly efficient interparticle electron transfer, therefore achieving enhanced photocatalytic properties. However, the loading of TiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of g-C3N4 leads to the decrease of the visible-light response ability. Therefore, under the joint action of these factors, the porous TiO2/g-C3N4 nanocomposites achieve the best photocatalytic activity when the mole ratio of TiO2:g-C3N4 reaches 1:3, and the visible-light photocatalytic activity of TiO2/g-C3N4 nanocomposite is about as 11.1 times high as that of pure g-C3N4 without modification.

Abstract:Functional Materials Letters, Ahead of Print. In this work, WO3 quantum dots grow in situ on the synthesized ultra-thin g-C3N4 nanosheets, ultimately forming a type of tightly bound 2D/0D Z-type heterojunctions. It was found that WO3 quantum dots were closely combined with g-C3N4 nanosheets through SEM and TEM measurements. XRD, IR, and XPS characterization proved a g-C3N4/WO3 heterojunction material was formed. The construction of g-C3N4/WO3 heterojunctions enhanced visible light absorption, improved carrier separation efficiency, and reduced charge transfer resistance. Photocatalytic hydrogen production tests showed that the hydrogen production rate of 20% g-C3N4/WO3 composite materials was 2.8 times that of the original g-C3N4, and the hydrogen production amount within 3 h was 3.7 times that of the original g-C3N4. Photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B and 4-chlorophenol under visible light irradiation showed that compared with g-C3N4, the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of 20% g-C3N4/WO3 composite materials was enhanced. The results reveal that the special structured g-C3N4/WO3 composite materials have excellent photocatalytic activity, which can not only efficiently produce hydrogen but also efficiently degrade organic pollutants, providing an important reference for solving energy crises and environmental problems.

Abstract:The use of photocatalysis to address environmental pollution and energy shortage is an attractive choice. Herein, we successfully synthesized a novel 3D interconnected porous carbon-rich g-C3N4 catalyst via facile thermal polymerization to enhance photocatalytic hydrogen production and photodegradation of dye contaminants. Enhanced hydrogen evolution (1956.23 μmol g−1 h−1) and photocatalytic RhB degradation (96.74%) efficiency were achieved with the as-obtained catalysts. Based on the photocatalytic experimental data and characterization analyses, an enhancement mechanism was proposed. The 3D interconnected porous structure endowed the g-C3N4 with numerous active sites and a large specific surface area, and the carbon modification facilitated the separation and transfer of the photoinduced charge carriers. Nanoshape engineering and the carbon-rich structure showed a synergetic effect in increasing photocatalytic performance. This study offers an applicable methodology for the exploitation of an economical catalyst to alleviate environmental pollution and energy shortages.

Abstract:Accelerating the charge separation and transfer as well as increasing the visible light absorption is of great importance for photocatalysts to realize efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution via water splitting. Herein, for the first time, we fabricated in-plane graphited nanocarbon-conjugated polymeric carbon nitride (GNC-C3N4) nanosheet heterostructure photocatalyst from melamine and hexaketocyclohexane octahydrate mixture via an amino-carbonyl reaction. The incorporation of GNC into conjugate network of C3N4 can not only dramatically enhance the light harvesting but also significantly promote the charge separation and transfer by the built-in electric field and intimate interface in the coplanar GNC-C3N4 heterostructure. Abstract:In this work, g-C3N4 nanotubes (CNtb) with sheet-like graphdiyne (GDY) composite are successfully prepared through a simple self-assembly method. The composite is proved to significantly improve the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers and the conductivity of the material, which consequently leads to enhanced performance towards photocatalytic CO2 reduction. For the composite, the yields for CO and CH4 are increased by 18–20 times, compared with pure CNtb. This work provides a new idea for the preparation of efficient g-C3N4 photocatalysts in the future.

Abstract:A simple and template-free synthesis method was developed to fabricate porous graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) through a hydrothermal process in the presence of ammonium hydroxide. The effect of ammonium hydroxide on the structure of porous g-C3N4 was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM and TEM. The photocatalytic activity of porous g-C3N4 was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. The results show that as-prepared porous g-C3N4 exhibits a porous nanostructure composed of 2D nanosheets and interconnected pores. The photocatalytic activity of porous g-C3N4 is enhanced, owing to the synergistic effect of more reaction sites and good separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets loaded with WO3 nanoparticles were prepared via heat treatment of g-C3N4 together with WOx-EDA nanobelts. The thermal treatment temperature and WOx-EDA precursor play the key role in enhancing the interaction between WO3 nanoparticles and g-C3N4 nanosheets, because the temperature of thermal decomposition of WOx-EDA (similar to 400 degrees C) is close to the thermal exfoliation temperature of g-C3N4. The structure evolution and promotion effect of the nanocomposites in photocatalytic performance were well studied. It is found that WO3 nanoparticles uniformly dispersed on the surface of the g-C3N4 nanosheets, and the close integration of WO3 and g-C3N4 lead to the high photocatalytic activity in the degradation of RhB under visible light irradiation. Meanwhile, a larger specific area and increase of visible light absorption are also of benefit to speed up the degradation of organic dye. Also, the mechanism of the photocatalytic reaction and its reutilization properties were investigated.
