Abstract:A new green synthesis of phenyl vinyl sulfoxide was described. The use of ethylene oxide, strong acid resin, and solid supported phosphotungstic acid made the process green and feasible to industrialize. The optimal condition was selected in the experiments. The total yield was 80.5% and it was eco-friendly. The catalysts were easy to recycle. According to the experiments, the oxidation mechanism was assumed to follow the complex–oxidation–decomplex fashion.

Abstract:Polyol esters are abundant bio‐based resources. Integration of polyol esters into the production chain of fine chemicals would reduce carbon emission and improve the sustainability of the chemical industry. An efficient synthetic route towards phenoxyethanols was developed through catalytic hydroxyethylation of phenols with ethylene glycol diacetate as the reagent. This method showed the potential of ethylene glycol diester as a safe and sustainable substitute for ethylene oxide, a useful but toxic reagent. A variety of phenoxyethanol esters were produced in high yield under simple catalytic conditions. Mechanism studies revealed the reaction underwent a neighboring group participation process.

Abstract:The utilization of biomass has recently attracted tremendous attention as a potential alternative to petroleum for the production of liquid fuels and chemicals. We report an efficient alcohol‐mediated reactive extraction strategy by which a hydrophobic mixture of butyl levulinate and formate esters, derived from cellulosic biomass, can be converted to valuable γ‐valerolactone (GVL) by a simple supported gold catalyst system without need of an external hydrogen source. The essential role of the supported gold is to facilitate the rapid and selective decomposition of butyl formate to produce a hydrogen stream, which enables the highly effective reduction of butyl levulinate into GVL. This protocol simplifies the recovery and recycling of sulfuric acid, which is used for cellulose deconstruction.

Abstract:Experimental research on the synthesis of dimethyl ether (DME), ethylene glycol (EG), methyl glycolate (MG) from syngas, produced by biomass gasification and catalytic reforming, was carried out. The improved two step process, composed of methanol synthesis and methanol dehydration in a fixed-bed reactor, was employed for the direct DME synthesis. It shows that methanol synthesis catalyst in top stage is more sensitive to the temperature vibration than that of dehydration catalyst in the bottom stage. The process for EG and MG production from biomass-derived syngas involves two steps, the coupling of CO with nitrite esters to dimethyl oxalate (DMO) and the hydrogenation of DMO to ethanol, EG and MG. It reveals that low reaction temperature and H2/DMO molar ratio and high gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) facilitate to the MG production while the opposite reaction conditions would lead to improve the ethanol selectivity, and the moderate reaction conditions are beneficial to convert DMO to EG.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Propylene glycol ether is expected to be a safe substitute for toxic ethylene glycol ether usually used in industry owing to its negligible toxicity. Although catalysis of solid acids or bases for the synthesis of the ether can avoid separation of catalysts, liquid waste treatment and corrosion problems, it suffers from drawbacks, e.g. lower activity and selectivity to target product, high reaction pressure and temperature. In order to solve these problems, a basic ionic liquid, namely choline hydroxide was prepared and used as a catalyst for synthesis of the ether via atom-economy reaction from propylene oxide and methanol. RESULTS: The ionic liquid showed excellent catalytic performance exhibiting 95.4% conversion of propylene oxide (PO) and 94.6% selectivity to 1-methoxy-2-propanol. It is also an effective catalyst for the reaction of PO with other primary alcohols to yield corresponding ethers. In addition this catalyst can be recovered and reused. CONCLUSION:The high activity and selectivity can probably be ascribed to its basicity and/or the strong polarity and electrostatic field of the reaction medium caused by the ionic liquid. An alternative synthetic approach for efficient catalytic conversion of syngas to ethanol

Abstract:Ethanol is an attractive end product and a versatile feedstock because a widespread market exists for its commercial use as a fuel additive or a potential substitute for gasoline. Currently, ethanol is produced primarily by fermentation of biomass-derived sugars, particularly those containing six carbons, but coproducts 5-carbon sugars and lignin remain unusable. Another major process for commercial production of ethanol is hydration of ethylene over solid acidic catalysts, yet not sustainable considering the depletion of fossil fuels. Catalytic conversion of synthetic gas (CO + H2) could produce ethanol in large quantities. However, the direct catalytic conversion of synthetic gas to ethanol remains challenging, and no commercial process exists as of today although the research has been ongoing for the past 90 years, since such the process suffers from low yield and poor selectivity due to slow kinetics of the initial C-C bond formation and fast chain growth of the C2 intermediates. This Account describes recent developments in an alternative approach for the synthesis of ethanol via synthetic gas. This process is an integrated technology consisting of the coupling of CO with methanol to form dimethyl oxalate and the subsequent hydrogenation to yield ethanol. The byproduct of the second step (methanol) can be separated and used in circulation as the feedstock for the coupling step. The coupling reaction of carbon monoxide for producing dimethyl oxalate takes place under moderate reaction conditions with high selectivity (∼95%), which ideally leads to a self-closing, nonwaste, catalytic cycling process. This Account also summarizes the progress on the development of copper-based catalysts for the hydrogenation reaction with remarkable efficiencies and stability. The unique lamellar structure and the cooperative effect between surface Cu(0) and Cu(+) species are responsible for the activity of the catalyst with high yield of ethanol (∼91%). The understanding of nature of valence states of Cu could also guide the rational design of Cu-based catalysts for other similar reactions, particularly for hydrogenation catalytic systems. In addition, by regulating the reaction condition and the surface structure of the catalysts, the products in the hydrogenation steps, such as ethanol, methyl glycolate, and ethylene glycol, could be tuned efficiently. This synthetic approach enables a more sustainable ethanol, methyl glycolate, and ethylene glycol synthesis in industry and greatly reduces the dependence on petroleum resources and the emission of the greenhouse gas.

Abstract:A series of functionalized polymer ionic liquids (PILs) were synthesized and immobilized onto a 4 angstrom molecular sieve. The catalytic activity of the resulting heterogeneous catalyst toward the synthesis of ethylene carbonate (EC) via the cycloaddition reaction of ethylene oxide (EO) and CO2 was studied. The effects of the reaction conditions such as reaction temperature, pressure, time, and the amount of catalyst used, were systematically investigated. A high yield of EC and excellent selectivity could be obtained under optimized conditions. The catalyst is thermally stable and shows good reusability. Based on the experimental results, a plausible reaction mechanism has been proposed for the catalytic reaction.

Abstract:The use of biomass as a solution to satisfy the pressing needs for a fully sustainable biocommodity industry has been explored for a long time. However, limited success has been obtained. In this study, a highly effective two-stage procedure for the direct preparation of para-xylene (PX) from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and formic acid in one pot is described; these chemicals are two of themajor bio-based feedstocks that offer the potential to address urgent needs for the green, sustainable production of drop-in chemical entities. The use of a robust, efficient heterogeneous catalyst, namely, bimetallic Pd-decorated Au clusters anchored on tetragonal-phase zirconia, is crucial to the success of this strategy. This multifunctional catalytic system can not only facilitate a lowenergy- barrier H-2-free pathway for the rapid, nearly exclusive formation of 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) from HMF but also enable the subsequent ultraselective production of PX by the dehydrative aromatization of the resultant DMF with ethylene.

Abstract:Petroleum-based and other non-renewable materials are widely used in a variety of industrial applications today, and as a result, they have significantly contributed to the rapid growth of various economies across the globe. However, there are a significant number of obstacles in developing strategies to replace petroleum-based materials with renewable resources materials. These obstacles include the over-utilization of petroleum resources, ecological challenges associated with the excessive pressure and over-exploitation of petroleum-based materials, and non-biodegradable products. Therefore, the essential utilization of renewable feedstocks in developing energy, fuels and high-value-added chemicals is a significant step toward attaining more sustainable biorefinery strategies. As a result, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), which may be further processed into a variety of bio-based liquid fuels, has been identified as one of the most suitable biomass-based materials. Thus, in this work, the essential utilization of renewable feedstocks in developing energy, fuels and high-value-added chemicals is a significant step toward attaining more sustainable biorefinery strategies. Herein, we report the application of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as a catalyst in the presence of an economical dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/water solvent technique plays a significant role in the production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) by dehydrating D-glucose via microwave (MW) facilitated heating method. Under a microwave heating technique at 150 °C for 30 min, the choline chloride (ChCl): malonic acid (MA) DES combination had the highest 5-HMF yield of 85.6%, with an activation energy ( Ea ) 28.53 kJ/mol. Under optimized diverse parameters, the proposed catalytic system ChCl: MA DES demonstrated a considerable yield and outstanding catalytic activity, with only a 6.3% decline in 5-HMF production after five recycling runs. Inclusively, we have proposed a cost-effective, simple, energy-efficient, and a new environmentally friendly method that could be useful in a number of biomass-based conversion processes.

Abstract:Selective coupling of C1 platform molecules to C2 olefins is a cornerstone for establishing a sustainable chemical industry based on non petroleum sources. Vinyl chloride (C2H3Cl), one of top commodity petrochemicals, is commercially produced from coal or oil derived C2 hydrocarbon (acetylene and ethylene) feedstocks with a high carbon footprint. Here, we report a decarbonized vinyl chloride synthesis via selective oxidative coupling of methyl chloride. This is enabled by a solid catalyst, featuring tungstate sub nanoclusters embedded in a zirconia matrix, which effectively captures CH2Cl radicals homogeneously generated in CH3Cl oxy pyrolysis and selectively couples them into C2H3Cl. In situ synchrotron based vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry provides direct experimental evidence of the homogeneous heterogeneous reaction mechanism. The process achieves methyl chloride conversion of 10 – 65% with a high vinyl chloride selectivity (60 – 75%) at a reaction temperature (600 – 750 °C), which is much lower than the traditional pyrolysis (> 850 °C). It also delivers a stable performance (at a vinyl chloride yield of ca. 30%) with no deactivation observed during a 50 hour test. Furthermore, combining with reaction of methanol and HCl to produce methyl chloride, we establish a methanol to vinyl chloride (MTV) route with the potential for significant reductions in climate change impact (24%) and cost (38%) compared to the state of the art ethylene based balanced process. A more remarkable 237% reduction in climate change impacts can be anticipated in the future oriented green scenario for MTV process primarily attributed to the utilization of renewable C1 feedstocks that results in negative net contributions to the overall impacts.

Abstract:Developing efficient and cost-effective methodologies for high value-added conversion of waste plastic delivers substantial environmental and economic benefits. Herein, we develop a novel approach utilizing boric acid in the methanolysis of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to derive pure dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) and boronic acid esters through in-situ capture of ethylene glycol (EG). It not only upcycles waste PET but also eliminates intricate EG purification processes. Catalyzed by magnalium-aluminum-layered double oxides (Mg4Al1-LDO), this method achieved 100% conversions of PET with 96% and 99% yields of arylboronic esters and DMT, respectively. Kinetic studies and in-situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) demonstrated the pivotal role of the monodentate methoxy species, generated through the interaction of medium basic Mg–O ion pairs and methanol. This method demonstrates applicability for the upcycling of assorted discarded PET wastes, polyesters, and polycarbonates with EG units, highlighting its potential as a comprehensive solution for waste plastic management.

Abstract:Various heterogeneous catalysts have been investigated in the transesterification of glycerol with ethylene carbonate to glycerol carbonate in a batch reactor, and a commercially available 4A molecular sieve exhibited relatively high catalytic performance for its surface strong basic and acidic sites. Further, an integrated vacuum reactive distillation process was developed for the transesterification in the presence of the 4A molecular sieve. The produced ethylene glycol could be efficiently removed from the reaction system to overcome the equilibrium, and excellent glycerol conversion (99%) and glycerol carbonate selectivity (>99%) were obtained under the optimal reaction conditions. The recycling and the scale-up experiments demonstrate the excellent practical potential of the present process, thus providing an efficient reaction process for the preparation of glycerol carbonate.

Abstract:Ethylene glycol is an essential commodity chemical with high demand, which is conventionally produced via thermocatalytic oxidation of ethylene with huge fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emission. The one-step electrochemical approach offers a sustainable route but suffers from reliance on noble metal catalysts, low activity, and mediocre selectivity. Herein, we report a one-step electrochemical oxidation of ethylene to ethylene glycol over an earth-abundant metal-based molecular catalyst, a cobalt phthalocyanine supported on a carbon nanotube (CoPc/CNT). The catalyst delivers ethylene glycol with 100% selectivity and 1.78 min-1 turnover frequency at room temperature and ambient pressure, more competitive than those obtained over palladium catalysts. Experimental data demonstrate that the catalyst orchestrates multiple tasks in sequence, involving electrochemical water activation to generate high-valence Co-oxo species, ethylene epoxidation to afford an ethylene oxide intermediate via oxygen transfer, and eventually ring-opening of ethylene oxide to ethylene glycol facilitated by in situ formed Lewis acid site. This work offers a great opportunity for commodity chemicals synthesis based on a one-step, earth-abundant metal-catalyzed, and renewable electricity-driven route.

Abstract:The synthesis of gamma-valerolactone from biomass-derived ethyl levulinate is of great importance for biomass conversion. However, development of efficient catalytic systems which are simple, commercially available, easy for preparation, and large-scale for the hydrogenation of ethyl levulinate to afford gamma-valerolactone is still necessary. Here, a series of commercial zeolite supported catalysts were synthesized by using a wet impregnation method for the systemic investigation of the hydrogenation of biomass-derived ethyl levulinate. High yield and selectivity towards GVL were achieved and varied and systematic characterizations including XRD, XPS, TEM and BET were used to investigate these catalysts. The influence of different reaction condition parameters was also investigated and discussed. The construction of zeolite supported catalysts showed broad prospects for the conversion of biomass into biofuels.
Green Synthesis of Biobased Glycerol Levulinate Ketal in a Continuous Flow Reactor: Optimization, Kinetics and Simulation

Abstract:The development of novel biobased chemicals is of great research significance in promoting the high -value utilization of lignocellulosic biomass. Methyl levulinate glycerol ketal (MLK) as a novel biobased chemical can be used as a solvent and applied in the fields of polyurethane and coatings. In this paper, the process of continuous preparation of MLK from methyl levulinate (ML) and glycerol (GLY) was studied. The effects of different factors on the yield of MLK and the conversion of GLY were investigated, and the optimum reaction conditions were reaction temperature 140 degrees C, catalyst HZSM-5 0.50 g, ML to GLY molar ratio 4:1 and weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 1.34 h-1. Under these conditions, the conversion of GLY was 97.00% and the yield of MLK reached 94.70%. The kinetic experiments were further carried out at the temperature range of 130 degrees C to 150 degrees C, and the kinetic results showed that the activation energy and the pre -exponential factor were 64.26 kJ & sdot;mol-1 and 9.05 x 109 mol & sdot;g- 1 & sdot;s- 1, respectively. Meanwhile, the production efficiency in the continuous process was 1.91 g & sdot;h-1 with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 9.00 h- 1, suggesting a higher catalytic efficiency and catalytic activity than that in the batch process. On this basis, a process simulation of the continuous MLK preparation process was further conducted, and the techno-economic evaluation of the process was performed to provide a theoretical reference for the development of the biobased MLK process.

Abstract:Ethanol is currently produced via the catalytic hydration of ethylene or fermentation of foods. The synthesis of ethanol from cheap and renewable CO2 is of great importance, but the state of the art routes encounter difficulties, especially in reaction selectivity and activity. Here we show a strategy of ethanol synthesis from CO2, dimethyl ether (DME) and H2. The reaction can be effectively promoted with a Ru–Co bimetallic catalyst using LiI as a promoter in 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone (DMI) solvent. The predominant product of this reaction was ethanol and the selectivity of ethanol in total products could reach 71.7 C-mol%. The selectivity of ethanol in the liquid product could reach 94.1%, which was higher than the reported routes using CO2/CO. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work on ethanol synthesis from DME, CO2 and H2. The reaction mechanism is discussed based on a series of control experiments.

Xylose Acetals – a New Class of Sustainable Solvents and Their Application in Enzymatic Polycondensation

Abstract:The use of organic solvents in academic research and industry applications is facing increasing regulatory pressure due to environmental and health concerns. Consequently, there is a growing demand for sustainable solvents, particularly in the enzymatic synthesis and processing of polyesters. Biocatalysts offer a sustainable method for producing these materials; however, achieving high molecular weights often necessitates use of solvents. In this work, we introduce a new class of alternative aprotic solvents with medium polarity produced directly from agricultural waste biomass in up to 83 mol% yield (on xylan basis). The new solvents have a largely unmodified xylose core and acetal functionality, yet they show no peroxide formation and provide reduced flammability risk. We also demonstrate their successful application in enzymatic polycondensation reactions with Candida antarctica lipase B (CaLB). In particular, the solvent dibutylxylose (DBX) outperformed the hazardous solvent diphenyl ether and facilitated polycondensation of the lignin‐derived diester pyridine‐2,4‐dicarboxylate, yielding polyesters with a Mn of >15 kDa. Computational modelling studies provided further insight into the molecular structure and dynamics of CaLB in the presence of new solvents. Lastly, up to 98 wt% of the new xylose acetals were successfully recovered and recycled, further contributing to the sustainability of the overall process.

Vinyl chloride synthesis via selective oxidative coupling of methyl chloride

Abstract:Selective coupling of C1 platform molecules to C2 olefins is a cornerstone for establishing a sustainable chemical industry based on non petroleum sources1-3. Vinyl chloride (C2H3Cl), one of top commodity petrochemicals, is commercially produced from coal or oil derived C2 hydrocarbon (acetylene and ethylene) feedstocks with a high carbon footprint4-6. Here, we report a vinyl chloride synthesis via selective oxidative coupling of methyl chloride. This is enabled by a solid catalyst, featuring tungstate sub nanoclusters embedded in a zirconia matrix, which effectively captures CH2Cl radicals homogeneously generated in CH3Cl oxy pyrolysis and selectively couples them into C2H3Cl. In situ synchrotron based vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry provides direct experimental evidence of the homogeneous heterogeneous reaction mechanism. The process achieves methyl chloride conversion of 10 – 65% with a high vinyl chloride selectivity (60 – 75%) at a reaction temperature (600 – 750 °C), which is much lower than the traditional pyrolysis (> 850 °C). It also delivers a stable performance (at a vinyl chloride yield of ca. 30%) with no deactivation observed during a 50 hour test. Furthermore, combining with reaction of methanol and HCl to produce methyl chloride, we establish a methanol to vinyl chloride (MTV) route with the potential for significant reductions in climate change impact (24%) and cost (38%) compared to the state of the art ethylene based balanced process, allowing for the efficient utilization of cheaper and renewable C1 feedstocks.
