Abstract:This chapter first provides a brief background of how hydrogenation mechanisms have evolved over the years leading to the blossom of catalytic systems with metal-ligand cooperativity. The main body of the chapter focuses specifically on complexes supported by ligands of the type HN(CH2CH2PR2)(2). The discussion of hydrogenation systems is organized based on the central metals including Ru, Fe, Os, Rh, Co, Ir, Ni, Pd, Mo, W, Mn, and Re (in that particular order). Substrates involved in these hydrogenation reactions include olefins, aldehydes, ketones, esters, amides, epoxides, nitriles, imines, N-heterocycles, CO2 (to formate or methanol), silyl formates, CO (to ethylene glycol or methanol), and cyclic carbonates. When appropriate, the presence or the lack of metal-ligand cooperativity in these catalytic systems is highlighted.

Abstract:Several cobalt(II) complexes supported by tetradentate aminobenzimidazole (N4) ligands and a tridentate nitrogen (N3) ligand have been prepared and characterized. X-ray crystallographic analysis indicates that the cobalt complex of BPMB (BPMB=1,2-bis((S)-2-(1-methyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl) pyrrolidin-1-yl)ethane) ligand shows a distorted octahedral configuration. These cobalt(II) complexes can catalyze the transfer hydrogenation reaction of simple olefins with ammonia borane as a hydrogen source, and a variety of terminal olefins can be reduced to corresponding alkanes in good to excellent yields under mild reaction conditions. Note that Co-N3 complex provides an inferior outcome than those of Co-N4 complexes.

Abstract:The reaction of N,N‐bis(2‐(diisopropylphosphaneyl)ethyl)prop‐2‐yn‐1‐amine 1 with [Ru(CO)ClH(PPh3)3] leads to the formation of a new class of cyclometallated PNPC pincer complexes. Several examples of this class of compounds are synthesized and characterized. They, specifically complexes 2 and 3, show good to excellent activity and selectivity in additive‐free formic acid dehydrogenation, and transfer (de)hydrogenation reactions of different functional groups (ketone, alkyne, alcohol). Theoretical and experimental studies reveal two competing pathways for the dehydrogenation of formic acid. The Ru‐H pathway proceeds via the coordination site trans to the propylene arm of the ligand, whereas in the Ru‐C pathway, a decoordination of the propylene arm is observed.

Abstract:An efficient additive free hydrogenation of alkenes with molecular hydrogen is described. The pre-catalyst is a well-defined bench stable Mn(I) alkyl complex bearing a NHC phosphine ligand. These reactions are environ-mentally benign and atom economic, implementing an inexpensive, earth abundant non-precious metal catalyst. The catalytic process is initiated by migratory insertion of a CO ligand into the Mn-alkyl bond to yield an acyl in-termediate which undergoes rapid hydrogenolysis to form the active 16e Mn(I) hydride catalyst [Mn(PC-iPr)(CO)2(H)]. A range of mono- and disubstituted alkenes were efficiently converted into alkanes in good to ex-cellent yields. The hydrogenation requires a reaction temperature of 60 oC. In all cases, a catalyst loading of 1 mol % and a hydrogen pressure of 50 bar was applied. A mechanism based on DFT calculations is presented which is supported by experimental studies.

Abstract:Copper hydride clusters of the type (RPNHP)nCu2nH2n (RPNHP = HN(CH2CH2PR2)2; n = 2 and 3) have been synthesized from the reaction of (RPNHP)CuBr with KOtBu under H2 or in one pot from a 1:2:2 mixture of RPNHP, CuBr, and KOtBu under H2. With medium-sized phosphorus substituents (R = iPr and Cy), the phosphine ligands stabilize both hexanuclear and tetranuclear clusters; however, the smaller clusters are kinetic products and aggregate further over time. Use of a bulkier ligand tBuPNHP leads to the formation of only a tetranuclear cluster. Crystallographic studies reveal a distorted octahedral Cu6 unit in (iPrPNHP)3Cu6H6 (2a) and (CyPNHP)3Cu6H6 (2b), while a tetrahedral Cu4 unit exists in (CyPNHP)2Cu4H4 (2b') and (tBuPNHP)2Cu4H4 (2c'), all furnished with face-capping hydrides and bridging RPNHP ligands. The aggregations are maintained in solution, although hydrides are fluxional. These copper clusters are capable of reducing aldehydes and ketones to the corresponding copper alkoxide species. Ranking their reactivity toward N-methyl-2-pyrrolecarboxaldehyde gives 2b' > 2a, 2b ≫ 2c', which correlates inversely with the order of thermal stability (against decomposition and cluster expansion).

Abstract:Here, we reported for the first time a mechanistically distinctive cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov-type sequential semihydrogenation/hydrohydrazidation of aliphatic terminal alkynes in one pot. A cobalt hydride species was employed as two roles for both a unique metal-catalyzed Markovnikov-type insertion of the aliphatic terminal alkynes and then metal-catalyzed hydrogen atom transfer of alkenes. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance and step economy. The hydrazone products could be easily transferred to various valuable amine derivatives.

Abstract:A bifunctional copper(I)/N-heterocyclic carbene complex bearing a highly basic 2-iminopyridine subunit effects a variety of copper(I) hydride-based reductive transformations at low H2 pressure. The bifunctional catalyst allows for the first time to employ only catalytic amounts of alkoxide additive and is the copper(I) catalyst with the highest reactivity towards H2 re-ported so far. We can demonstrate that efficient alkyne semihydrogenations, conjugate reductions as well as 1,2-reductions of carbonyl compounds can be carried out at very low H2 pressure. The new protocol circumvents the need for previously required high-pressure equipment. At the same time, use of the new iminopyridine-based ligand allows for the tolerance of an unprecedented variety of functional groups in the realm of copper(I)-catalyzed hydrogenations. A possible working model featuring an iminopyridine-mediated proximity effect that coordinates the key alkoxide close to the reactive cop-per(I) center is proposed to account for the observed significant rise in reactivity. Mechanistic studies directed at support-ing this current working hypothesis are presented.

Abstract:We present a bifunctional catalyst consisting of a copper(I)/N-heterocyclic carbene and an organocatalytic guanidine moiety that enables for the first time a copper(I) catalyzed reduction of amides with H2 as the terminal reducing agent. The guanidine allows for reactivity tuning of the originally weakly nucleophilic copper(I) hydrides – formed in situ –to be able to reacting with diffi-cult-to-reduce amides. Additionally, the guanidine moiety is key for the selective recognition of “privileged” amides based on simple and readily available heterocycles in the presence of other amides within one molecule to give rise to a hitherto unknown site-selective catalytic amide hydrogenation. A substrate scope, mechanistic investigations as well as a working hypothesis, supported by computational analysis for the site-selectivity is presented.

Abstract:The reaction between 2-(3,5-dimethylpyrazolylmethyl)-5-(dimethylaminomethyl)pyrrole and thiophenol under heating conditions afforded the new ligand 2-(3,5-dimethylpyrazolylmethyl)-5-(phenylthiomethyl)pyrrole 2. The reaction of 2 with meta-chloroperbenzoic acid gave the sulfoxide 3 and sulfone 4 groups containing ligands. The reaction of 2 with copper(I) halides gave the binuclear complexes: [Cu(-X){-C4H3N-2-(CH2Me2pz)-5-(CH2SPh)-κ2¬¬-S,N}]2 (X = Cl, Br and I, 5-7) in high yields. Conversely, the analogous reaction of 4 with copper(I) halides yielded two types of complexes – three coordinate bi- and mononuclear of the type: [Cu(-Cl){C4H3N-2-(CH2Me2pz)-5-(CH2SO2Ph)-κ1-N}]2 8 and [CuX{C4H3N-2-(CH2Me2pz)-5-(CH2SO2Ph)-κ1-N}2], X = Br, 9 and I, 10. When the reaction was carried out in the presence of KPF6, the two coordinate complex [Cu{C4H3N-2-(CH2Me2pz)-5-(CH2SO2Ph)-κ1-N}2]PF6 11a was isolated; its BF4 analogue 11b was synthesized by the reaction of 8 with AgBF4. The structures of these complexes were determined by single crystal X-ray methods. These copper complexes catalyze the hydroamination-alkynylation reaction between several secondary amines, and alkyl, aryl terminal alkynes. Using 1 mol% of complexes 5-10 as catalysts, both the tri- and tetrasubstituted propargylamines were isolated. While phenylacetylene and different secondary amines afforded the corresponding trisubstituted propargylamines as the major products, alkyl terminal alkynes gave the tetrasubstituted products in excellent yields. The role of counter anion such as TfO, PF6, BF4, PO43 and Ph4B on product selectivity was also studied. When fluorinated anions TfO, PF6, and BF4 are present with copper complexes, the hydroamination-hydrovinylation product 1-aminodiene 23 was observed, which was not formed with PO43, Ph4B or halide ions. Specifically, the TfO and PF6 anions are in favor of formation of 23, while BF4 is in favor of the tetrasubstituted product as the major product. This has been further supported by the isolated copper(I) complexes containing PF6, and BF4 and by other specific reactions. Peaks for enamines and [LCu]+ species in HRMS spectra of reaction mixtures and the isolation of morpholinium copper(I) salt are in support of the proposed mechanism.

Abstract:This study applies Density Functional Theory (DFT) to theoretically investigate the reaction mechanism of a copper complex catalyst facilitating the reaction between a terminal alkyne and α-bromo amide, enabling the formation of E-alkenes through C(sp2)-C(sp3) coupling. Initially, the study explores the reaction mechanism, identifying the predominant reaction pathway and the rate-determining step. Next, we discuss the addition reaction mode of copper hydride with terminal alkynes, determining the causes of regional and stereoselectivity. Subsequently, the reaction mechanism between the alkenyl copper intermediate and α-bromo amide is examined, including the discussion of alkyl fragment activation and introduction methods. Furthermore, the role of NHC ligands in catalyzing the single electron transfer process for C-Br bond activation is investigated. Finally, we analyze and discuss the reasons for the high energy barrier of the non-radical pathway. These investigations not only deepen our understanding of the reaction mechanisms of terminal alkynes and α-bromo amide catalyzed by copper but also provide valuable guidance for the future design of more efficient catalysts and reaction conditions.

Abstract:Despite the increasing use of copper in C‐H functionalizations, the Cu‐catalyzed direct deuteration of C‐H bonds remains a significant challenge due to its inherent low reactivity in inverse C‐H bond reconstruction. In this paper, a novel strategy had been developed to reverse the copper‐catalyzed concerted metalation‐deprotonation process by inhibiting the unexpected disproportionation of Cu(II) to Cu(III). Picolinic acid was identified as a powerful ligand for facilitating this H/D exchange with D2O as deuterium source, and its inhibition activity was supported by preliminary control experiments and DFT studies.

Abstract:A series of tridentate copper( II ) N -heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes with imidazole, benzimidazole, and 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole azole rings were synthesized and comprehensively characterized via X-ray crystallography, ESI-MS, cyclic voltammetry, and UV-Vis and EPR spectroscopic studies. These complexes were then utilized for the optimization of ketone reduction under sustainable conditions using 2-acetylpyridine and phenylsilane. The relationships between product formation, temperature, reaction time, and catalyst loading for the hydrogenation reactions are covered in detail. Reduction of eighteen different aliphatic, cyclic, and aromatic ketones were demonstrated, which were compatible to produce the corresponding products in moderate to good yields. These systems were used to develop related DNA-hybrid catalytic systems, but only supported weak enantioselectivity. Further thermodynamic experiments showed Cu-NHC complexes did not demonstrate specific binding to DNA, which is consistent with their limited selectivity.

Ruthenium Pincer Nitrosyl Complex Salts in Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenations under Mild Conditions

Abstract:The nitrosyl ligand exhibits interesting features for catalysis, such as strong π acidity, excellent stability, and potential non innocent behavior. Pincer complexes are known to be extraordinarily stable yet tunable and catalytically highly active. However, even though pincer nitrosyl complexes could potentially open new possibilities within catalysis, they have been scarcely explored and witnessed little development within this area. Herein, we describe the synthesis of a novel family of ruthenium PNP nitrosyl complex salts (PNP = (iPr2PCH2CH2)2NH and X = Cl, BF4, BPh4 and PF6) and their use for catalytic transfer hydrogenation of a range of carbonyl compounds. For the transfer hydrogenation of ketones, an optimization study showed that all catalysts (Ru-1 to Ru-4) are highly active at 90 °C, reaching high to full conversion already within 5 minutes, a behavior that was comparable to the well-known commercially available Ru-MACHO derivative Ru-5. At 35 °C, Ru 1 (X = Cl) and Ru 2 (X = BF4) were more efficient than Ru 3 (X = BPh4) and Ru-4 (X = PF6), likely due to their higher solubility in isopropanol. Interestingly, for the transfer hydrogenation of aldehydes, higher temperatures and longer reaction times were required. Thus, Ru-1 and Ru-3 performed better with the aldehydes, leading to full conversion after 7 hours at 70 °C. Overall, a large scope of ketones and aldehydes are presented for the first time with a pincer nitrosyl catalyst. Lastly, competition studies revealed that the hydrogenation of a ketone is suppressed by the presence of an aldehyde. The data indicates two different mechanisms for aldehyde and ketone transfer hydrogenation.

Abstract:There is ongoing interest in catalysis with the earth-abundant metal copper (Cu). This density functional theory (DFT) study explores the detailed workings of the first CuH-catalyzed hydroarylation of alkenes with polyfluoroarenes involving C–F bond functionalization. The CuH complex undergoes Markovnikov hydrocupration with the aryl alkene substrate to give a Cu(I) benzyl intermediate, and the regioselectivity is due to a combination of orbital and dispersion interactions induced by the aryl alkene substrate. The benzyl ligand allows a 1,3-cupratropic shift for the Cu(I) complex to have an exposed carbonanionic atom facilitating nucleophilic aromatic substitution to the polyfluoroarene substrate. The distinct regioselectivity of para-C–F substitution is controlled by the noncovalent C(sp3)–H/π and C(sp2)–H●●●O interactions. These mechanistic insights can have implications for the development of new transitional metal-catalyzed hydroarylation and C–F functionalization reactions.

Abstract:Abstract Copper hydrides are important hydrogenation catalysts, but their poor stability hinders the practical applications. Ligand engineering is an effective strategy to tackle this issue. An amidinate ligand, N,N′-Di(5-trifluoromethyl-2-pyridyl)formamidinate (Tf-dpf) with four N-donors has been applied as a protecting agent in the synthesis of stable copper hydride clusters: Cu 11 H 3 (Tf-dpf) 6 (OAc) 2 ( Cu 11 ) with three interfacial μ 5 -H and [Cu 12 H 3 (Tf-dpf) 6 (OAc) 2 ]·OAc ( Cu 12 ) with three interstitial μ 6 -H. A solvent-triggered reversible interconversion between Cu 11 and Cu 12 has been observed thanks to the flexibility of Tf-dpf. Cu 11 shows high activity in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol, while Cu 12 displays very low activity. Deuteration experiments prove that the type of hydride is the key in dictating the catalytic activity, for the interfacial μ 5 -H species in Cu 11 are involved in the catalytic cycle whereas the interstitial μ 6 -H species in Cu 12 are not. This work highlights the role of hydrides with regard to catalytic hydrogenation activity.

Abstract:Palladium POCOP-pincer hydride complexes [2,6-(R2PO)(2)C6H3]PdH (R = Bu-t, 2a; R = Pr-i, 2b; R = (c)Pe, 2c, (c)Pe = cyclopentyl) have been synthesized from [2,6-(R2PO)(2)C6H3] PdCl (1a-c) and LiAlH4 or LiBEt3H. These hydride complexes react with phenylacetylene to afford H-2, [2,6-(R2PO)(2)C6H3] PdC CPh (3a-c) and a small amount of styrene. When the R groups are isopropyl groups, a second palladium species is generated, and it has been identified as an alkenyl complex (E)-[2,6-((Pr2PO)-Pr-i)(2)C6H3] PdCH-CHPh (4b). Mechanistic studies have shown that decomposition of these palladium pincer complexes and related palladium methyl complexes [2,6-(R2PO)(2)C6H3] PdCH3 (5a-c) occurs at room temperature in the presence of H-2 (1 atm or lower), resulting in the leaching of palladium particles. These particles have been shown to catalyze the hydrogenation of phenylacetylene and diphenylacetylene to their alkene and alkane products. A mechanism for the formation of palladium particles has been proposed. The structures of 1a, 1c, 2a, 2c, 3a, 4b and 5b have been studied by X-ray crystallography.
