Abstract:In the past decades, researchers have established various theories and approaches to explore the nature of translation, this “most complex type of event yet produced in the evolution of the cosmos” (Richard, 1953:250). Especially since the inception of Translation Studies as an academic discipline in the 1970s, translation scholars have drawn extensively on tools, concepts, and theories from other disciplines, such as sociology, anthropology, psychology, and biology in their efforts to explore the many facets of translation and interpreting. Now, neuroscience came to the fore. As the study of the nervous system, the task of neuroscience is to understand brain processes— how we perceive, act, learn, and remember – and explain behavior in terms of brain activities (Kandel et al., 2012, pp. 3-5). For decades, neuroscientists have explored human language and have produced remarkable studies on language development and learning. Yet the findings on how the brain handles language processing are still primarily based on monolinguals. The mental process of multilingual people and many other aspects of the transfer between different languages remain largely unsettled. This inspired Maria Tymoczko to explore the neurological mechanisms involved in translating, a field that she dubs as one of the “known unknowns” in translation studies (Tymoczko, 2012) and believes will fundamentally influence the way translation is thought about and ultimately illuminate many aspects of translation, including the “black box” of the individual translator.

Abstract:The study of the cognitive aspect of translation opens up new possibilities for understanding and analysing the translation process through the prism of cognitive science. By analysing the cognitive processes that take place in the translator's brain while performing translation, it is possible to reveal various aspects of this complex and multifaceted process. The purpose of this article is to conduct a literature review of cognition-oriented translation studies in order to contribute to the development of the science of translation studies. The method included the analysis of related literature from the scientific databases Scopus and Google Scholar. As a result of this study, advanced theoretical models were put forward and developed to reveal the so-called “black box” of the translator, which is considered a key aspect in understanding the cognitive processes of translation. These theoretical approaches aimed to uncover the internal mechanism and strategies used by the translator when performing translation in order to reveal and analyse how these processes occur in the translator's brain. Conclusions – the research focused on translation processes has great potential, as it uses the latest theoretical models and research methods from related cognitive disciplines such as cognitive psychology, cognitive linguistics, neurophysiology and computational linguistics. The paper attempts to identify challenges in cognitive translation research in order to contribute to a broader understanding of the cognitive aspects of translation and to help address key challenges in this area.

Abstract:Psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics have been seldom used in investigating the cultural component of language. In this study, we suggest a scientific methodology to study neurocognitive mechanisms induced by the interaction between multi-linguistics and cross-culture differences, especially during translation between a source language (SL) and a target language (TL). Using a contest of tonal languages (Chinese) and atonal language (English) multilingual exchange, we opine that translation theories as numerous and efficacious as they are, lack the competence to bring absolute clarity into the complex cross-cultural dimension of languages when it comes to accuracy in translation. Echoing this, this study attempts to apply neuroscience in blending cross-cultural diversity and neurolinguistics as a one-in-all translation approach to “multicultural neurolinguistics” between an SL and a given TL. The linguistic examination of this study proves that “multicultural neurolinguistics” will provide a unique framework for all translation barriers, and establish a cross-cultural and multilingual network depending on the particular circumstance. This research contributes to the linguistic literature by bringing a “multicultural neurolinguistics” resolution to the cultural diversity question in translation.

Abstract:There have been few attempts at applying cultural neuroscience and psychology to the discussion of poetic translatability. This study employs cultural neuroscience and psychology methodologies and forms of evidence to explore the neurocognitive mechanisms by which cross-cultural variations in perspectives during the translation process influence poetic reception in the target culture. The English translation of Chinese poetry is often tasked with the supplement of perspectives and accompanied by cross-cultural variations of immersion. These changes have been substantially discussed from literary and poetic perspectives but remain understudied in terms of their neurocognitive and psychological implications. Through textual analysis of first-person points of view, this study attempts to apply neuroscience to the interpretation of the impact of differences in cross-cultural perspectives in poetry translation. Our findings suggest that a general tendency toward the supplement of first-person perspectives could boost the immersive experience by activating mirror neurons and the temporal parietal junction. These neuroscientific mechanisms underlying the observable cultural phenomenon offer implications for the translation of Chinese poetry in a way that generates brain responses and neurotransmitters similar to the source text. This study demonstrates how research in neuroscience can illuminate findings in cross-cultural communication.

Abstract:The article discusses the cognitive-communicative principles of modern translation studies based on the cognitive paradigm, which focuses on the cognitive activities of translators and the information, knowledge, and meanings contained in texts and discourses. The aim of the research is to develop principles of translation studies from the perspective of this paradigm. The research methodology is based on the author’s concept of translation space, which operates with the concepts of cognition, synergy, and harmony; the concept of “epistemic situation,” which reveals the extralinguistic semantic basis of scientific texts as a triad of ontology, methodology, and axiology; and cognitive studies of language and translation. The methodological approach to the practical analysis of translation implemented in the article is based on the principles of synergy, which reveal the regularities of complex linguo-cognitive systems. The axiological orientation of translation is based on the idea of harmony as a semantic proportionality, which serves as a criterion for translation quality. Fragments of texts from the scientificphilosophical discourse of Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault in Russian and French served as empirical material for analyzing how the principles of translation studies work. As a result of the research, anthropocentric, epistemological, and reflexive-conceptual principles of translation studies are characterized.

Abstract:The past 30 years and especially the first decade of the 21st century have witnessed a remarkable progress in cognitive research on translation process. The progress manifests itself in a growing tendency to apply advanced techniques and data-elicitation methods of cognitive sciences to translation studies. The remarkable findings of a number of large-scale international research projects in this respect have not only facilitated an integration of the two areas but are also pushing for the establishment of a new discipline, i.e., cognitive translation studies. The new discipline is, however, confronted with formidable challenges stemming from its lack of a systematic theoretical model, its insufficiency in methodology-related research, and its inadequate scheme for resource sharing. To ensure a smooth development of cognitive translation studies, attention must be turned to researches on its theoretical modeling, methodology, and resource sharing, and on a further specification of its subjects and variables as well.

Abstract:This article discusses research in the field of bilingualism that has the potential to inform the related, albeit disconnected, field of Cognitive Translation and Interpreting Studies (CTIS). It reviews issues such as lexical access and the multilingual mental lexicon, inhibitory control and the “bilingual advantage debate”. This debate refers to the question whether bilingualism leads to cognitive advantages that monolinguals do not develop. Although these claims have not been fully tested in translators and interpreters – both novice and advanced professionals – it is plausible that if there are indeed cognitive advantages that arise from managing “two languages in one mind”, such benefits may correlate with neural and cognitive changes due to the training, accumulated experience and expertise of translators and interpreters. These topics merit inclusion in the expanding set of prominent research themes in CTIS. Future research in CTIS can use findings from bilingualism and the bilingual advantage debate to account for the peculiarities of translational cognition.

Cognitive Linguistics offers a different consideration of translation with a cognitive paradigm in which translation is seen as a humanized, individualistic and cognitive activity. It provides Translation Studies with innovative theoretical frameworks, analytic tools, and research methodologies while contributing to the emergence of Cognitive Translation Studies. Future developments might be seen in the elaboration of the theoretical frameworks, the interaction between the Cognitive Linguistic approach and empirical research, and the integration of Cognitive Linguistics with other branches of cognitive science for the modeling of translational cognition.

Not lost in translation: neural responses shared across languages

Abstract:How similar are the brains of listeners who hear the same content expressed in different languages? We directly compared the fMRI response time courses of English speakers and Russian speakers who listened to a real-life Russian narrative and its English translation. In the translation, we tried to preserve the content of the narrative while reducing the structural similarities across languages. The story evoked similar brain responses, invariant to the structural changes across languages, beginning just outside early auditory areas and extending through temporal, parietal, and frontal cerebral cortices. The similarity of responses across languages was nearly equal to the similarity of responses within each language group. The present results demonstrate that the human brain processes real-life information in a manner that is largely insensitive to the language in which that information is conveyed. The methods introduced here can potentially be used to quantify the transmission of meaning across cultural and linguistic boundaries.
Temporal Dynamics of Emotion and Cognition in Human Translation: Integrating the Task Segment Framework and the HOF Taxonomy

Abstract:The paper develops a novel generative model of human translation processes grounded in empirical translation process data. Assuming three processes that unfold concurrently in the translating mind, it integrates the Task Segment Framework (Munoz & Apfelthaler 2022) and the HOF taxonomy (Carl et al 2024) into a coherent architecture: uninterrupted translation production is caused by routinized/automated processes, cognitive/reflective interventions lead to longer keystroke pauses, while emotional/affective states of the mind are identified by distinctive gazing patterns. Utilizing data from the CRITT Translation Process Research Database (TPR-DB), the paper illustrates how the temporal structure of keystroke and gazing data can be related to the three assumed hidden mental processes that are believed to cause the observable data. The paper relates this embedded generative model with Robinsons (2023) ideosomatic theory of translation, opening exciting, new theoretical horizons for Cognitive Translation Studies, grounded in empirical data and evaluation.

Abstract:This article introduces Douglas Robinson's book Who translates?Translator Subjectivities beyond Reason,which developed the theory of postrationalist translator subjectivities across a fairly wide disciplinary spectrum,including church history,psychoanalysis,philosophy,literature,neurology,and economics.It discusses the translator's inner states and the outer collective functions that influence the translation process.Robinson's multidisciplinary theoretical construction at the same time shows his epistemological idea of theoretical adjustment to the reality and thereby builds a bridge between translation theory and practice.

Abstract:Translation is actually a restatement,in target language,of the original meaning in source language. And the meaning formation is closely related to human's cognition. The translation study from cognitive perspective has been on the rise in recent years,and a cognitive view on translation has also been developed,but much leaves to be studied on the relationship between translator's cognitive competence and translation quality. Based on the analysis of some concrete examples,this paper attempts to find out how translator's cognitive competence influences and even determines the translation quality in terms of cognitive perspective,cognitive structure and cognitive logic.

Abstract:Abstract Within only a few decades, the field of cognitive science has progressed from the mind-as-a-computer metaphor to the integration of mind, brain, behaviour, and culture at multiple levels of analysis and with multiple, convergent tools and methodologies. In particular, the interface between cognitive science and neuroscience has provided fertile ground for transformative research and revolutionary thinking, yielding perspectives that allow for fundamental scientific discoveries and rapid paradigm shifts. This article explores that the study of language, a unique human capacity, has played an important role in this scientific movement. A large body of knowledge has accumulated on the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying language representation and language acquisition. This article focuses on the computational mechanisms and neural signatures based on the recent cross-linguistic computational and neural studies which examine the acquisition, representation, and processing of spoken and written Chinese in the context of both native speakers and second-language learners.

Abstract:As an advanced function of the cognitive neural mechanism of human brain, inductive reasoning is an important skill in language communication. Under the background of the development of information intelligence, it is a new research field to effectively display the cognitive neural function of inductive reasoning with the advantage of the logic operation of artificial intelligence algorithm. Therefore, in this paper, based on the neurolinguistics, the translation and introduction of Mo Yan's works were studied. And on the basis of the analysis of the characteristics of the cognitive neural mechanism of sentence inductive reasoning, by using fMR and ERP techniques, the narrowing characteristics of the semantic integrated components in the induction were investigated, and the dual processing model of inductive reasoning was discussed. After that, artificial intelligence particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm was introduced, and the problem of alignment in the translation of English and Chinese sentences in Mo Yan's works was transformed into the problem of finding the optimal solution for the corresponding fitness function in Chinese and English sentences in bilingual space. Thus, a scientific mathematical model was used to improve the accuracy of translation. The simulation experiments show that this study can effectively improve the accuracy of the translation and introduction of Mo Yan's works.
