Abstract:With the on-going boom in the construction of dam reservoirs all over the world, the sources and composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in fluvial networks are expected to be altered. Considering the importance of DOM as a key biogeochemical component in inland waters, this might bring important ecological and environmental influences. However, limited information is available on the molecular composition of DOM in dam reservoirs. In this study, the spatial characteristics of DOM composition were investigated in Xiangxi tributary and mainstream of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), the largest freshwater reservoir in the world. The concentration alteration of conservative cations revealed the water intrusion from mainstream into Xiangxi tributary, which mainly controlled the hydrological gradient. One tyrosine-like (C4), one tryptophan-like (C2), and two humic-like (C1 and C3) fluorescent components were identified in fluorescent DOM (FDOM) by parallel factor analysis (PAFACAC), potentially indicating algal, anthropogenic, and terrestrial inputs, respectively. Decreasing trends of C1, C3 and C4 components and an increasing trend of C2 component were observed from Xiangxi tributary to mainstream, indicating higher terrestrial and algal inputs but lower anthropogenic inputs in Xiangxi tributary compared to mainstream. The Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) characterization further revealed substantial heterogeneity of DOM at the molecular level. Interestingly, S-containing compounds related to synthetic surfactants were consistently detected, and their relative abundances showed an increasing trend from Xiangxi tributary to mainstream, in agreement with the distribution of the anthropogenic derived C2 component. Meanwhile, numerous lignin-like S-containing compounds were identified, likely the result of the incorporation of sulfide ions to lignin-like CHO compounds. This study represents the first molecular level characterization of DOM in the TGR system, which should aid the design and implementation of more detailed future studies.
Tracking the changes of dissolved organic matter throughout the city water supply system with optical indices

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is important in determining the drinking water treatment and the supplied water quality. However, a comprehensive DOM study for the whole water supply system is lacking and the potential effects of secondary water supply are largely unknown. This was studied using dissolved organic carbon (DOC), absorption spectroscopy, and fluorescence excitation-emission matrices-parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC). Four fluorescent components were identified, including humic-like C1-C2, tryptophan-like C3, and tyrosine-like C4. In the drinking water treatment plants, the advanced treatment using ozone and biological activated carbon (O3-BAC) was more effective in removing DOC than the conventional process, with the removals of C1 and C3 improved by 17.7%-25.1% and 19.2%-27.0%. The absorption coefficient and C1-C4 correlated significantly with DOC in water treatments, suggesting that absorption and fluorescence could effectively track the changes in bulk DOM. DOM generally remained stable in each drinking water distribution system, suggesting the importance of the treated water quality in determining that of the corresponding network. The optical indices changed notably between distribution networks of different treatment plants, which enabled the identification of changing water sources. A comparison of DOM in the direct and secondary water supplies suggested limited impacts of secondary water supply, although the changes in organic carbon and absorption indices were detected in some locations. These results have implications for better understanding the changes of DOM in the whole water supply system to help ensure the supplied water quality.

Abstract:The characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in inflowing river, flowing into drinking water, have profound influences on the quality and safety of water. Here, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy and three-dimensional fluorescence (EEM) spectroscopy were combined to investigate the spatiotemporal variations of DOM in Nanfei River flowing into Chaohu Lake in China. 24 water samples and 24 surface sediments samples (including dry-to-wet transition season and wet season in 2018) were collected from different types of outlets. Parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) model and correlation analysis were conducted to identify the primary sources of DOM. Two humic-like components (C1 235-250 nm/385-430 nm and C3 255-270 nm/455-510 nm) and one tryptophan-like component (C2 270-290 nm/320-350 nm) were effectively identified by PARAFAC model. The results showed DOM concentration presented significant spatiotemporal variations. The concentration was much lower in water than in surface sediments in dry-to-wet transition season, but higher in the wet season. Fluorescence index (FI), biological index (BIX) and humification index (HIX) were used to judge characteristic of DOM origination. These indexes indicated that, DOM in Nanfei River had both the characteristics of humus and autogenous, but neogene autogenic feature was stronger, which was largely due to mixture of water, resuspension and desorption of DOM in sediments and photochemical degradation. In addition, the characteristic parameter of molecular mass of DOM (the values of M) had an obvious linear relationship with the fluorescence intensity ratio of fulvic acid-like to humic acid-like (C1/C3), indicating that macromolecular substances could be removed by adding or improving membrane treatment. These provided technical support for improving quality and comprehensive treatment of drinking water sources.
Developing LED UV Fluorescence Sensors for Online Monitoring DOM and Predicting DBPs Formation Potential During Water Treatment

Abstract:Online monitoring dissolved organic matter (DOM) is urgent for water treatment management. In this study, high performance size exclusion chromatography with multi-UV absorbance and multi-emission fluorescence scans were applied to spectrally characterize samples from 16 drinking water sources across Yangzi River and Huai River Watersheds. The UV absorbance indices at 254 nm and 280 nm referred to the same DOM components and concentration, and the 280 nm UV light could excite both protein-like and humic-like fluorescence. Hence a novel UV fluorescence sensor was developed out using only one UV280 light-emitting diode (LED) as light source. For all samples, enhanced coagulation was mainly effective for large molecular weight biopolymers; while anion exchange further substantially removed humic substances. During chlorination tests, UVA280 and UVA254 showed similar correlations with yields of disinfection byproducts (DBPs); the humic-like fluorescence obtained from LED sensors correlated well with both trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids yields, while the correlation between protein-like fluorescence and trihalomethanes was relatively poor. Anion exchange exhibited more reduction of DBPs yields as well as UV absorbance and fluorescence signals than enhanced coagulation. The results suggest that the LED UV fluorescence sensors are very promising for online monitoring DOM and predicting DBPs formation potential during water treatment.

Abstract:Since the variation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) is complicated in the aquatic environment and water treatment processes, adverse effects on human and water quality may be triggered. Nowadays, more drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) begin using pretreatment and advanced treatment processes for removing refractory DOM to pursue high-quality drinking water, including preozonation, and combined ozonation and biological activated carbon (BAC) treatment. The combination of Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer and fluorescence spectroscopy could comprehensively unveil the DOM composition and characteristics in water treatments. This study aims to provide information on the molecular and spectroscopic characteristics of DOM in a DWTP with pretreatments and advanced treatment processes and summarize the removal efficiency of different treatment processes on DOM. Results showed that the removal rate of low-molecular-weight acids (LMW-acids) by BAC was as high as 98 %, reflecting the synergistic effect of ozonation/BAC unit. Pre-ozonation enhanced coagulation process had a good removal effect on CHONS. The diversity of DOM increased and the relative abundance of DOM intensity was reduced in preozonation/coagulation/sedimentation and O 3 /BAC units. The preozonation-coagulation/sedimentation unit reduced the aromaticity or unsaturation of DOM while the advanced treatment process had a higher removal rate of fluorescent components.

Abstract:Delivering drinking water with stable quality in metropolitan cities is a big challenge. This study investigated the year-long dynamics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the tap water and source water of a metropolitan city in southern China using fluorescence spectroscopy. The DOM detected in the tap water, and source water of Shenzhen city was season and location-dependent. A year-long cyclic trend of DOM was found with predominate protein-like fluorescence in the dry season compared to the humic-like enriched DOM in the wet season. A general DOM pattern was estimated by measuring the shift in dominant fluorescence regions on the excitation-emission matrix (EEM). The difference in fluorescent DOM (FDOM) composition (in terms of the ratio of protein-like to humic-like fluorescence) was above 200% between wet and dry seasons. The taps associated with reservoirs receiving water from the eastern tributary of Dongjiang River showed significant changes in protein-like contents than the taps with source water originating from the western part of the river. This study highlights the importance of optimizing drinking water treatment plants' operational conditions after considering seasonal changes and source water characteristics.

Abstract:This study aims to extend and demonstrate the application of fluorescence spectroscopy for monitoring the water quality of three differently operated full-scale drinking water treatment plants located in the Shenzhen city (China). A ratio of fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM), which describes relative changes in humic-like to protein-like fluorescence, was used to explain mechanisms behind the physicochemical processes. The fluorescence components obtained through individual and combined parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) modeling revealed the presence of humic-like (C1) and protein-like (C2) structures in the DOM. The C1/C2 ratio provided a direct relationship between the seasonal variations and DOM composition. Wet season generated DOM enriched with humic-like fluorescence, while dry season caused a higher release of protein-like fluorescence. The fluorescence ratio presented unique patterns of DOM in treatment trains. The chemical pretreatment and disinfection unit processes showed a higher tendency to remove the humic-like fluorescence. However, the C1/C2 ratio increased during physical treatment processes such as coagulation-precipitation and sand filtration, indicating preferential removal of protein-like fluorescence. The DOM composition in influent directly (R2 = 0.77) influenced the relative intensities of fluorescence components in the treated water. Compared to the dry season, the wet season caused significant changes in DOM composition and produced treated water enriched with humic-like fluorescence. This fluorescence ratio offers an approach to explore the role of different treatment units and determine the factors affecting the composition of DOM in the surface water and drinking water treatment plants.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is an important part of the material cycle in the water environment, and it plays an important role in the nutrient cycle of nitrogen and phosphorus in eutrophic water and biological processes. Dianchi Lake is a heavily eutrophic plateau lake in China. To investigate the fluorescence characteristics of DOM and the influences of DOM on water quality of rivers and lakes in the Dianchi Lake basin, three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry were employed to determine the features of dissolved organic matter (DOM) components. According to the research results, the DOM components in rivers and lakes in the Dianchi Lake basin were dominated by humic-like substances and affected by seasonal changes to a certain extent. DOM in Dianchi Lake is affected by the macrophytes and algae distribution as well as inflowing rivers, but the dominant factors are different in dry and rainy seasons. PCA results indicated that DOM components had relatively high relevance to water quality indicators, especially COD and TN. In conclusion, Lake ecosystem status and pollution levels can be characterized by DOM to some extent, the DOM components in the Dianchi Lake are prone to humification with the implementation of wastewater treatment and aquatic ecological restoration projects, as reflected in the improved water quality index.

Abstract:Several factors play a role in chlorine consumption in drinking water networks such as microbial contamination and dissolved organic matter (DOM). This study investigated the simultaneous impacts of seasonal variations on chlorine consumption and DOM composition for a year-long period in three different full-scale water distribution networks in a southern city of China. Efforts were made to determine the association between different fluorescence moieties in DOM of finished water and chlorine consumption through excitation-emission matrix coupled with parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC). The chlorine consumption was also found to be directly related to N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and NDMA-formation potential (NDMA-FP), presenting consequence of excess residual chlorine. The wet season with high rainfall showed elevated consumption of chlorine on the opposite of dry season. During wet season, humic-like component in finished water was dominant than protein-like features and its abundance decreased in dry season. Results proved that chlorine consumption was season dependent and highly influenced by DOM composition in the finished water. Unlike the bulk quality parameters and protein-like component, fluorescence moieties related to humic substances acted as a surrogate for the chlorine consumption. Based on humic-like component, a single excitation based fluorescence peak, I-245/410 or I-335/410, was also extracted from EEMs of finished water samples and validated on different water distribution networks. These two single peaks well-explained the trends of residual chlorine and have the potential for on-line monitoring and portable purposes. This field-based study demonstrated application of fluorescence spectroscopy in designing chlorine dose to obtain optimal residual chlorine at consumer's tap.
Source identification and characteristics of dissolved organic matter and disinfection by-product formation potential using EEM-PARAFAC in the Manas River, China

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is ubiquitous in natural water and reacts with disinfectants to form disinfection by-products (DBPs). The analysis of DOM in raw water is helpful in evaluating the formation potential of DBPs. However, there is relatively little research on the DOM identification of raw water in northern China. In this study, the sources and characteristics of DOM were investigated in the samples collected from the Manas River. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC), UV254, specific ultraviolet absorbance, and fluorescence indices (fluorescence index, humification index, and biological index) were measured to characterize the DOM, and trihalomethanes (THMs) were quantified following formation potential tests with free chlorine. The maximum amount of total trihalomethane formation potential (THMsFP) was 225.57 μg L-1. The DOM of the Manas River consisted of microorganisms and soil resources. The excitation-emission matrix combined with parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) identified microbial humus (C1, 54%) and tryptophan-like protein (C2, 46%). PARAFAC components were evaluated as the precursor surrogate parameters of THMsFP. Additionally, the linear THMsFP correlation was stronger with C1 + C2 (r = 0.529, p < 0.01) than with C1 (r = 0.485, p < 0.01). Thus, C1 + C2 is an accurate THMsFP precursor surrogate parameter for the Manas River, and the use of fluorescence spectroscopy may be a robust alternative for predicting DOC removal.
Fate of Naturally Dissolved Organic Matter and Synthetic Organic Compounds Subjected to Drinking Water Treatment Using Membrane, Activated Carbon, and UV/H2O2 Technologies

Abstract:Organic pollutants are toxic and are present in drinking water. The conventional processes of most water plants can basically meet the discharge standard. However, based on the improvement of the objective of organic pollutants control and the constant change of water characteristics, the results may not be ideal. This study evaluates the effectiveness of different treatments such as microfiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, activated carbon, and ultraviolet irradiation/H2O2 in terms of the removal of organic pollutants. Among the DOM results, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, and activated carbon showed optimal performance due to the characteristics of processes and the compound properties. However, the risks of low-molecular-weight organic residue and byproduct formation are still present. Thirty-nine species of synthetic organic compounds (SOC) were qualitatively and semiquantitatively analyzed. Different technologies showed varying removal capabilities for SOC based on their properties and many substances coexisted leading to abnormal removal performances. These residual organics showed the characteristics of lower molecular weight, more hydrophilicity, further unknown impacts, and with risk of DBPs. Based on the above insights, possible methods can be rationally chosen for on-demand decontamination of organics in unconfined aquatic environment and long-time impact on water characteristics and human health also should be considered.

Abstract:Excitation–emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy combined with multivariable analysis was employed to discriminate structural component of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in Xihe River, an urban river, located in western Shenyang City of China, and to reveal its correlation with water quality. Eight water samples were collected along the river across the centralized wastewater-discharge region and the dispersed wastewater-discharge region. Water quality had deeply deteriorated in the river. Based on DOM fluorescence spectroscopic properties, DOM was composed of tyrosine-like, tryptophan-like, soluble microbial by-product-like, fulvic-like and humic-like materials, among which protein-like material was dominant in the DOM fractions. The DOM in the centralized wastewater-discharge region had a lower level of aromaticity than that in the dispersed wastewater-discharge region, and its humification degree was lower than that in the latter too. Key factors for the trophic state contained NH 4 -N, DO, DOC, TP, Φ 2, n and Φ 4, n by multivariable analysis. DOM was mainly derived from treated and untreated industrial wastewater with weak biodegradability.

Abstract:The characterization of dissolved organic matter (DOM) is important for better understanding of the migration and transformation mechanisms of DOM in water bodies and its interaction with other contaminants. In this work, fluorescence characteristics and molecular compositions of the DOM samples collected from the mainstream, tributary, and sewage outfall of the Inner Mongolia section of the Yellow River (IMYR) were determined by using fluorescence spectroscopy and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). In addition, concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the relevant surface water and their potential relationships with DOM were investigated. The results showed that the abundance of tyrosine-like components increased significantly in downstream waters impacted by outfall effluents and was negatively correlated with the humification index (HIX). Compared to the mainstream, outfall and tributaries have a high number of molecular formulas and a higher proportion of CHOS molecular formulas. In particular, the O5S class has a relative intensity of 41.6% and the O5-7S class has more than 70%. Thirty-eight PTEs were measured in the surface water samples, and 12 found above their detective levels at all sampling sites. Protein-like components are positively correlated with Cu, which is likely indicating the source of Cu in the aquatic environment of the IMYR. Our results demonstrated that urban wastewater discharges significantly alter characteristics and compositions of DOM in the mainstream of IMYR with strongly anthropogenic features. These results and conclusions are important for understanding the role and sources of DOM in the Yellow River aquatic environment.

Abstract:The Yangtze River basin covers one-fifth of China's land area and serves as a water source for one-third of China's population. During long-distance water transport from upstream to downstream, various sources of dissolved organic matter (DOM) lead to considerable variation in DOM properties, significantly impacting water treatability and disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation after chlorination. Using size-exclusion chromatography and fluorescence spectroscopy, the spatial variation in DOM characteristics was comprehensively investigated on a basin scale. The formation of 36 DBPs and speciated total organic halogen in chlorinated samples was determined. Overall, the Yangtze River waters featured a high proportion of terrestrially derived humic substances that served as important precursors for trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids, which was responsible for the increase in total DBP formation along the Yangtze River. The downstream waters were characterized by high levels of microbially derived protein-like biopolymers, which significantly contributed to the formation of haloacetaldehydes and haloacetonitriles that dominated DBP-associated mammalian cell cytotoxicity. Moreover, the precursors of haloacetaldehydes and haloacetonitriles in downstream waters were highly hydrophilic, posing a challenge for water treatment. Abstract:Abstract The dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the tail water of the municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) are complex and changeable, and can react with the organic and metal ions in the receiving water, thus affecting their migration and transformation. In order to understand the characteristics of DOM in the tail water of WWTP, the Guozhen WWTP and Kui river in Xuzhou city were taken as the research objects. The spectral characteristics of DOM were analysed by three dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy (3D-EEM), and the water quality indexes such as pH, total nitrogen (TN), ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 − -N), nitrate nitrogen(NO 3 − -N), nitrite nitrogen(NO 2 − -N), TOC and UV 254 were measured. The changing rules of these indexes in sewage, tail water and receiving river were discussed. The results showed that DOM in the tail water was mainly composed of soluble microbial metabolites and humic acids. The TN, NH 3 -N, NO 3 − -N, NO 2 − -N and TOC have been significantly reduced under the biological treatment process of the WWTP, but the large-scale drainage of the tail water will still have no negligible influence on the natural waterbody.
Fluorescence characteristics and source analysis of DOM in groundwater during the wet season in the CKDu zone of North Central Province, Sri Lanka

Abstract:The dissolved organic matter (DOM) should be purified for safe drinking water due to disinfection by-products (DBPs) produced by disinfectants reaction with DOM. Current research on groundwater in the chronic kidney disease with unknown etiology (CKDu) zone of the North Central Province (NCP) in Sri Lanka has focused mainly on aquatic chemistry, with limited attention paid to the spatial distribution, compositional sources and factors of DOM. Therefore, the structure, composition, source and spatial distribution of the DOM of two kinds of groundwater samples collected from dug well and tube well in the NCP during the wet season were determined, compared and analyzed by analytical tools such as parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). Results show that the average concentrations of TOC in these two groundwater samples are generally higher than 5.0 mg/L, and the concentration of TOC in the groundwater of the shallow weathered aquifer is higher than that of the deep hard rock aquifer, while its distribution of the two aquifers are on contrary. The DOM in the dug well has three types and four components, including humus-like component C1 (33.36%) and C2 (38.60%), protein-like component C3 (13.09%) and heterogeneous organic component C4 (14.95%). In the tube well, two types and two components of the DOM are determined, including humus-like component CⅠ (69.80%) widely existing in natural water and soluble microbial by-product CⅡ (30.20%) produced by microbial community activities. In the dug well, DOM is mainly exogenous input, the higher ion concentration in water affected the fluorescence intensity of humus and protein components. And in the tube well, DOM has obvious endogenous characteristics, and higher pH value may inhibit the production of protein like fluorescent substances to a certain extent.
Disinfection Characteristics of the Dissolved Organic Fractions at Several Stages of A Conventional Drinking Water Treatment Plant in Southern China

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) influences many aspects of drinking water treatment, including the formation of harmful disinfection by-products (DBPs) when disinfectants are applied. DOM was isolated and fractionated using membrane ultra-filtration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) to eight individual fractions based on molecular weight cut-offs from a conventional surface water treatment plant (WTP) in Guangzhou of PR China. Molecular weights of these eight fractions were further calibrated using high performance size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) and they ranged from 0.36 to 182.6 kDa. Fractions with molecular weight <0.80 kDa obtained by YC-05 UF membrane and RO were the major ones in all four stages of the water treatment processes; both ZM-500 and YM-100 membranes showed the highest removal efficiency when coupling with conventional coagulation and sedimentation processes. The elemental analysis showed that YC-05 fraction had greater polarity and aromaticity than any of the others. Furthermore, disinfection characteristics and trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) were determined for all DOM fractions obtained in this study. YC-05 fraction was the major precursor for trihalomethane (THMs) formation among the samples tested and could be removed effectively by particulate activated carbon (PAC) adsorption. RO fraction could not be removed by PAC adsorption and, as a result, consumed more chlorine in the disinfection process. The results suggested that advanced drinking water treatment should focus on the removal of low molecular weight DOM in the source water.

Abstract:The characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) such as chemical composition, molecular weight (MW) distribution and hydrophobic/hydrophilic distribution can affect wastewater treatment efficiency, effluent quality and ecological risk. Fluorescence spectroscopy could provide a quick estimate of DOM characteristics during the monitoring of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In this study, the characteristic and quantitative correlation of DOM from 14 anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (AAO) processes of WWTPs located in different provinces (municipalities) of China were investigated. The results showed that DOM of MW <1 kDa was the largest group of DOM in influent and secondary effluent, and DOM removal increased as the MW increased. Hydrophilic (HPI) fraction and hydrophobic acid (HPO-A) comprised the major portion of DOM in influent and secondary effluent and exhibited the lowest rate of removal. In addition, DOM concentrations in the northern provinces were higher than in the southern provinces, which were related to the water quality, economy and population. There were positive correlations between specific fluorescence intensity (SFI) and the MW <1 kDa, 1-5 kDa and 10 kDa fractions. The smaller the molecular weight, the better the correlation. Strong positive correlations between regional fluorescence proportion (f(i)) and HPI were found. SFI and f(i) may be explored as potential indicators of the MW fractions and the hydrophobic/hydrophilic distribution of DOM in AAO processes WWTPs. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM), having complex structures like aromatic structure and double bond structure, is able to represent relatively refractory parts of dissolved organic matter (DOM). This study investigated the distribution of FDOM in the influents and the removal in the secondary effluents of 15 municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in 15 provincial capitals of China. Eight components have been identified using excitation emission matrix combined with parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC). Tryptophan-like (C1 or C4), terrestrial humic-like (C2) and microbial humic-like (C3) fluorescent components were major FDOM components in municipal wastewater, appearing in 11 WWTPs simultaneously. The removal of total fluorescence was generally about 30%-40%, while hydrophobic humic-like compounds (C5 and C8) were the most refractory components with 4%-16% removal and C3 was the second most refractory with -11%-41% removal. The compositions of FDOM in municipal wastewater were different in northeast/west and middle/east regions according to the self-organized map (SOM) analysis. Wastewater sources had more important influence on fluorescent characteristics of secondary effluents than biological treatment processes. Besides, this study found that humification index (HIX) was the most suitable index to describe the bulk fluorescent character of wastewater since it had a good correlation with abundance, removal and ratios of main fluorescent components either in the influents or in the secondary effluents.
