Abstract:The kinetics of p-nitrotoluene nitration with mixed acid is important to industrial process design and safety control. However, it's difficult to acquire accurate kinetic data and no kinetics study has ever been reported before because of fast, highly exothermic and heterogeneous characteristics. In this work, a continuous-flow microreactor system including a micromixer, a capillary reactor and an online quenching module was designed to carry out the nitration under a homogeneous reaction condition. The homo-geneous nitration can completely eliminate mass transfer resistance between phases, and accurately control reaction temperature and residence time in the continuous-flow microreactor system. The observed reaction rate constants separately based on HNO3 and NOZ, pre-exponential factor and activation energy of p-nitrotoluene nitration were obtained and a general method was established to collect kinetics data for such a kind of fast and highly exothermal nitration reactions. Abstract:The nitration of toluene with mixed acid is one of the most representative nitration reactions. Accurate kinetic study is essential for controlling the reaction and designing reactors. Due to the characteristics of fast rate, high exothermicity and heterogeneity in toluene nitration, the effects of mass and heat transfer may result in inaccurate determination of kinetics. In this work, the adiabatic temperature rises of the reaction system were studied to provide precise ranges of experimental conditions for accurately controlling the reaction rate and heat release rate in a liquid–liquid microflow system. The adiabatic temperature rise was successfully controlled to below 0.3 °C. The effects of mass and heat transfer on the reaction rate were completely eliminated, so that the kinetic study was carried out under the control of intrinsic kinetics only. The activation energy for toluene nitration was determined to be 28.00 kJ/mol. The activation energies for the formation of o -nitrotoluene and p -nitrotoluene were obtained for the first time, which were 25.71 and 31.91 kJ/mol, respectively. The obtained kinetic models can predict the reaction performance of toluene nitration very well.

Abstract:The nitration of chlorobenzene with concentrated mixed acids is a fast and highly exothermic process, which suffers from considerable mass transfer resistance and poor heat transfer rates. The reaction kinetics has not been thoroughly reported before. In this work, a continuous-flow microreactor system and a homogeneous reaction condition were proposed to obtain accurate chlorobenzene nitration kinetics data at high mixed acid concentrations. A general model for predicting the observed reaction rate constants was established. With a new method for estimating the equilibria associated with HNO3 in aqueous sulfuric acid, the rate constants based on nitronium ion and activation energies were obtained. Compared with batch reactors, the continuous-flow microreactor system allows for a sufficient heat transfer efficiency and accurate residence time control, making it possible to study the reaction performance more quickly and sensitively. This work may provide a reliable reference for the kinetic study of similar processes.
Kinetics study of heterogeneous continuous-flow nitration of trifluoromethoxybenzene

Abstract:The kinetics and mass transfer characteristics of the nitration of trifluoromethoxybenzene (TFMB) with a mixed acid were investigated in microchannel reactors. By assuming the intrinsic reaction as the rate-determining step, a quasi-homogeneous reaction kinetic model was proposed and utilized to calculate the observed rate constant. The intrinsic reaction rate constant was then calculated by virtue of an activity coefficient function, Mc function. To identify the heterogeneous reaction regime, the Hatta number was obtained, which was in the range of 0.018 to 0.081. The low value of the Hatta number justified the previous assumption. Moreover, the proposed model was utilized to predict the product yields in the microchannel reactor, which are also in great agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:Nitration reactions are extensively studied in organic synthesis despite their notorious dangers, high reaction rates, and heterogeneous reaction systems. To date, most industrial nitration reactions rely on conventional batch reactors characterized by low mass transfer rates and limited reaction conditions. In contrast, microreactors represent a valuable technology for intensifying such nitration reactions. In this work, we established a continuous flow system of o -xylene nitration and determined the kinetics and mass transfer. The effects of mixing performance, nitric acid concentration, molar ratio, reaction temperature, and residence time on the process safety were investigated separately. The experimental data is supported by dimensionless number calculations, providing a more comprehensive understanding of the nitration reaction's transport and reaction performance in a heart-shaped microreactor. Remarkably, the residence time of the heart-shaped microreactor was reduced by an order of magnitude, while the volumetric mass transfer coefficient was improved by several orders of magnitude compared to conventional stirred tank reactors. Moreover, the spent nitric acid could be efficiently recovered and reused after concentration, further enhancing the sustainability and cost-effectiveness of the process. Our findings demonstrate the significant potential of microreactors for intensifying nitration reactions and paving the way for the design and optimization of more efficient and safer synthetic processes.

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation of NO with O-2 over Pt/gamma-Al2O3 and La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 was conducted with a tubular reactor in range of space time 0.090-0.720 second, inlet NO concentration 0.03-0.2 vol%, O-2 concentration 2-10 vol% and at 473 K. Under the conditions of 0.720 s space time, 0.05 vol% NO and 5 vol% O-2 concentrations, the steady-state conversion of NO oxidation over Pt/gamma-Al2O3 and La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 reached 22.4 and 90.5 %, respectively. A kinetic model consisting of 12 elementary reactions fits the experimental data adequately, indicated that the rate-limiting step of NO oxidation over Pt/gamma-Al2O3 was the reaction between gaseous NO with dissociately adsorbed O, and over La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 was the desorption of product NO2.

Abstract:In this work, the continuous flow nitration of naphthalene to 1-nitronaphthalene was systematically studied from the microreactor to mesoscale flow reactor and the safety issues during the reaction process were investigated. The effect of the molar ratio of nitric acid to naphthalene, residence time, reaction temperature, and sulfuric acid strength on the reaction process was comprehensively investigated in the microreactor. Under optimal conditions, the reaction yield could reach 94.96%. Due to the rapid exothermic characteristics of nitration, a quick heat transfer assessment was proposed to obtain the temperature profile during optimal conditions. It was found that the maximum overtemperature during the reaction was only 3.78 degrees C, which was consistent with the high yield under the optimal conditions. Then a scale-up of the microreactor to production was realized by a dimension enlarging strategy. In the mesoscale flow reactor, the influence of volumetric flow rates was investigated. The annual output of the flow reactor could reach 2643 kga(-1) while the highest overtemperature inside the reactor channel well exceeded 17.1 degrees C. In addition, a conventional semibatch experiment was carried out in the batch calorimeter RC1e to explore the reaction's exothermic characteristics. Finally, the performances of the two reactors were compared, showing that the continuous flow reactor had more advantages than the batch reactor in economic benefit and inherent safety.

Abstract:Nitration of O -methylisouronium sulfate under mixed acid conditions gives O -methyl- N -nitroisourea, a key intermediate of neonicotinoid insecticides with high application value. The reaction is a fast and highly exothermic process with a high mass transfer resistance, making its control difficult and risky. In this paper, a homogeneous continuous flow microreactor system was developed for the nitration of O -methylisouronium sulfate under high concentrations of mixed acids, with a homemade static mixer eliminating the mass transfer resistance. In addition, the kinetic modeling of this reaction was performed based on the theory of NO 2 + attack, with the activation energy and pre-exponential factor determined. Finally, based on the response surface generated by the kinetic model, the reaction was optimized with a conversion of 87.4% under a sulfuric acid mass fraction of 94%, initial reactant concentration of 0.5 mol/L, reaction temperature of 40 °C, molar ratio of reactants at 4.4:1, and a residence time of 12.36 minutes. Abstract:An efficient continuous-flow nitration process of o-xylene at pilot scale was demonstrated. The effects of parameters such as temperature, ratio of H2SO4 to HNO3, H2SO4 concentration, flow rate, and residence time on the reaction were studied. Under the optimal conditions, the yield of products reached 94.1%, with a product throughput of 800 g/h. The main impurities of this continuous-flow nitration process were also studied in detail. Compared with batch process, phenolic impurity decreased from 2% to 0.1%, which enabled the omission of the alkaline solution washing step and thus reduced the wastewater emission. The method was also successfully applied to the nitrification of p-xylene, toluene, and chlorobenzene with good yields.

Abstract:The matching of the micro-dispersion method and the reaction kinetics is of the utmost importance for the fast and strongly exothermic nitration reaction. Taken as an example to discuss this issue, a synthesis of 3,4-dichloronitrobenzene via the nitration of o-dichlorobenzene with mixed acid of nitric acid and sulfuric acid was conducted in continuous-flow reactors in this work. Through combining the adiabatic reaction environment, the use of a micropacked-bed reactor, and introducing partial product circulation, it successfully achieved the matching of the micro-dispersion state and the reaction kinetic characteristics. The good two-phase dispersion state can be maintained throughout the micropacked-bed reactor and the reaction can be completed within 5 s with above 89% selectivity under adiabatic condition. Furthermore, the reaction activation energy was conveniently obtained by processing the temperature distribution data, providing a fundamental to realize a reliable design of the nitration reaction process with high efficiency and inherent safety.
Mixing intensification and kinetics of 2,4-difluoronitrobenzene homogeneous nitration reaction in a heart-shaped continuous-flow microreactor

Abstract:In this study, we first experimentally demonstrated that the homogeneous nitration reaction process in capillary T-micromixers was greatly influenced by the limitations of mixing. Therefore, to improve the mixing effectiveness, we investigated the intensification of liquid mixing in the heart-shaped microreactor. Compared with the capillary T-micromixer, the mixing effectiveness in the heart-shaped microreactor was improved by three orders of magnitude, resulting in a conversion rate of 98.5 % and a reduction in residence time by two orders of magnitude compared to batch reactors. Furthermore, we have established a kinetic model that eliminates interphase mass transfer resistance and verified its accuracy by comparing the calculated values with the experimental ones. The mixing properties in the microreactor were revealed using the Damköhler number, Peclet number, and the mixer effectiveness. These findings contribute to the development of nitration reactions by highlighting the advantages of microreactors in this area and offer guidance for potential applications within the chemical industry.

Abstract:Nitrosation of alcohols with nitrous acid is widely used to prepare alkyl nitrites, but the reaction mechanism and formation pathways of gaseous side products remain unclear. Here, we propose a nitrosation mechanism based on a highly reactive intermediate, dinitrogen trioxide (N2O3). The N2O3-based mechanism shows a lower energy barrier than the previously reported acid-catalyzed and nitrosyl cation mechanism. Furthermore, a microfluidic platform was established to investigate the gas-liquid-liquid reaction system and characterize the gas holdup of the multiphase reaction system. The results suggest that the reaction rate and selectivity primarily depend on the interfacial mass transfer of N2O3 between the aqueous-organic and gaseous-organic phases. A tubular microreactor was employed to intensify the nitrosation process of isopropanol. In contrast to the batch process operated by adding reactants dropwise in several hours, the product yield of 95 % can be achieved in a residence time of only 10 s in the microflow reactor.

Abstract:Aromatic nitro compounds are an important class of basic chemical raw materials, while traditional nitration methods may cause safety accidents and environmental pollution due to strong exothermicity and presence of sulfuric acid. In this work, aiming to alleviate these issues, the nitration of toluene was conducted in a microchannel reactor with nitric acid and acetic anhydride. The effect of temperature, molar ratio of nitric acid to toluene, mass fraction of acetic anhydride, and residence time on the conversion and selectivity of reaction were systematically investigated, and response surface methodology was used to optimize the process. A mononitrotoluene yield of 99.21% can be achieved under optimum condition. Meanwhile, in order to better understand the exothermic behavior, toluene nitration by HNO3-AC2O was investigated in the semi-batch calorimeter. Finally, the optimized process was scaled up and effect of volumetric flow rate was investigated. At the selected maximum volumetric flow rate, the overtemperature of the system was 10.9°C with a 98.3% yield of mononitrotoluene. Continuous flow mode had a space-time yield nearly two orders of magnitude greater than semi-batch mode. This work can provide guidance for safe, efficient and green synthesis of mononitrotoluene.

Abstract:Microfluidic technology has been successfully applied to determine the reaction kinetics relying on its great characteristics including narrow residence time distribution,fast mixing,high mass and heat transfer rates and very low consumption of materials.In this review,the recent progresses about the reaction kinetics measured in microreactors are comprehensively organized,and the kinetic modeling thoughts,determination methods and essential kinetic regularities contained in these studies are summarized according to the reaction types involving nitration,oxidation,hydrogenation,photochemical reaction,polymerization and other reactions.Besides,the significant advances in the innovation of microplatform are also covered,The novel reactor configuration methods were established mainly to achieve rapid and efficient data collection and analysis.Finally,the advantages of microfluidic technology for the kinetic measurement are summarized,and a perspective for the future development is provided.

Abstract:A computational model combining the fluid dynamics with the particle kinetics was employed to study TiO2 nanoparticle synthesis in a diffusion flame reactor. A one-step chemical kinetics approach was used to model titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) decomposition that leads to homogeneous nucleation and particle formation. The momentum, heat, and mass transfer, Brownian coagulation and diffusion, surface growth, coalescence and thermophoresis have been taken into account. Based on the particle size distributions, an efficient quadrature method of moments was allowed to approximate the general dynamics equation of particle, and the eddy dissipation concept (EDC) combustion model was used to estimate the flame temperature field. Excellent agreements between the model predictions and experimental data, with respect to the flame temperature distribution and particle kinetics, are reached. By taking the particle size and surface area as independent variables, the full distributions of volume equivalent diameters, evolution of the agglomerate number, the geometric standard deviation based on volume and agglomerate fractal nature, mean primary particle size and the number of primary particles per agglomerate are revealed. The variation of oxygen flow rate has an important influence on the temperature distribution and hence on the particle kinetics accordingly.

Abstract:A continuous flow microfluidic system was developed to evaluate the reaction kinetics of cyclohexanone ammoximation over TS-1 catalyst. An ultrasonic field was introduced to avoid the sedimentation of solid catalyst. Compared with the batch reactor, the microfluidic system provides a more precise control of reaction conditions, faster reactant mixing and enhanced mass transfer. Thus, more accurate kinetic parameters can be extrapolated. The reaction order of each reactant, pre-exponential factor and activation energy were determined. A reaction kinetic model based on the mechanism through hydroxylamine route has been developed under the assumption that the reaction between hydrogen peroxide adsorbed on Ti active sites and free ammonia is the rate-determining step. The model is in good agreement with the experimental results. In addition, it has been proved that the microfluidic system with assistance of ultrasound field could be a good platform for activity evaluation of new nanocatalysts.

Abstract:Sulfonation of 1-tetradecene with liquid-phase sulfur trioxide generates simultaneously the alkene sulfonic acid and alkene sulfonate. The kinetics study is contributed to a deeper understanding of the sulfonation reaction and better controlling the process. The continuous microfluidic system was established to determine the kinetic parameters of 1-tetradecene sulfonation. A comprehensive kinetic model was developed, and the kinetic parameters were obtained. The activation energy is 14.7 ± 0.8 kJ mol−1, with a pre-exponential factor of 118.4 ± 1.4. The reaction order for 1-tetradecene is second-order, and for sulfur trioxide, the reaction order is 0.3. By discretizing the reactor into microelements and conducting mass balance on each differential element method, integrating the obtained reaction kinetics model, calculating the required reaction time, and comparing it with experimental data within a reasonable range of error, the correctness of the derived reaction kinetics model has been verified.

Abstract:A metal-free catalyzed oxidation of 2-nitro-4-methylsulfonatotoluene(NMST) to produce 2-nitro-4-methylsulfonatobenzoic acid(NMSBA) under Taylor flow regimes is introduced. N , N′ , N′′ - trihydroxyisocyanuric acid (THICA) as the catalyst and nitric acid as promoter, molecular oxygen as oxidant. The related parameters, such as residence time ( τ ), reaction temperature ( T ), and molar flow ratio of oxygen/substrate were investigated systematically. A good yield and selectivity were obtained by taking advantages of continuous flow system. Compared with the traditional batch oxidation process, the new continuous process is more safe and environmentally friendly.

Abstract:Halogenated aromatic anilines are series of crucial intermediates for the synthesis of pigments, medicines and pesticides in the fine chemistry. However, efficient inhibition of undesired dehalogenation is difficult to achieve in the commonly used batch reactors. Although employing continuous flow technology and modified catalysts could alleviate dehalogenation, obtaining high selectivity of halogenated aromatic anilines especially for brominated aromatic amines and iodine aromatic amines is still challenging. In this study, a continuous flow system based on micro-packed bed reactor was developed and a kinetic model of the hydrogenation of halogenated nitrobenzene was established. Kinetic parameters for the reductions of p-chloronitrobenzene, p-bromonitrobenzene and p-iodonitrobenzene were acquired and the kinetic model exhibited good fit for the transformation of each substance. Moreover, the accuracy of kinetic model was validated by the comparison with the values in literature. The obtained kinetic model offered helpful information for the process optimization of hydrogenation of halogenated nitroaromatics in continuous flow system. (C) 2022 Elsevier Ltd.
