Abstract:Analysis of geological structures and the characteristics of primary faults and folding at the Shihongtan uranium deposits indicate there was block-faulting in Shihongtan area. The area is divided into four block-faulting zones and the structural characteristics in each of the zones and the controlling factors affecting groundwater are discussed. The basin evolution and uranium mineralization are divided into three main stages, as well as several subsidiary stages. The clear controlling role basin structures on uranium ore distribution and morphology is described.

Abstract:In the economic practice of the Soviet Union, many decisions were developed that were perceived in many countries. The main experiment, the author considers the work with hundreds of thousands of top managers who do not have the property rights to their business. This article discusses methods of ensuring currency stability in the Soviet Union — sole proprietorship and personal responsibility, the formation of a personnel reserve and the so-called “nomenclature”. Such Soviet developments as Dynamo and Lipetsk methods, brigade contract and Saratov system, and today are used by different countries. On this basis, it is proposed to consider the Soviet Union as an objective pilot economic laboratory of the world.

Abstract:The article reveals one small page in the development of metallurgical science and technology in the Soviet Union, namely, the history of establishing scientific contacts between American and Soviet metallurgical scientists in the second half of the 1950s. Unto middle of 1950s the successful recovery of the USSR economy after the war ended with a scientific and technological breakthrough in the field of atomic and space technologies. This significantly strengthened the political and humanitarian authority of the USSR in the eyes of the world community, making the country attractive for scientific and technical cooperation. The rush of the Soviet atom and rocketry would have been impossible without high achievements in the basic sectors of the economy, such as metallurgy. The United States and its Western European allies came to understand the prospects of limited scientific and technical cooperation with the USSR and the unproductiveness of the policy of its isolation. The establishment of scientific and business contacts with Soviet metallurgical enterprises, research institutes and educational institutions forced the Americans to critically rethink their own achievements in the industry.

Abstract:The paper dwells on the brief history of the discovery and studies of the Oklo uranium deposit, a natural nuclear reactor, is considered. It was shown by French specialists in 1972. The discovery was made by studying the isotope ratio 235U§238U in ore. Several years earlier, such research was carried out at the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Mineral Raw Materials (VIMS). Unfortunately, the application for the discovery of domestic scientists was rejected.

Abstract:Rapid development of China’s internal nuclear market, together with its rise on the international arena and the declared transition to green economy, gave a crucial impetus to its aspirations to enter the international atomic market as a global exporter of nuclear technology. The aim of this article is to define the political and ideological foundations underpinning such an ambitious endeavor, as well as predict the related development in the short and mid-term perspective. The author utilizes both general scientific methods as well as statistical and comparative analysis to single out the directions of China’s nuclear market outreach, both regionally and globally. Pakistan, widely presented as a flagship example of China’s exporting its know-how in nuclear engineering, remains the only partner of a kind in the broader Asia-Pacific. This article demonstrates that Belt and Road Initiative (specifically, the Green Silk Road), out of all multiple formats, was arguably chosen by the Chinese government as the most suitable framework for expanding its influence in the nuclear domain and filling a certain gap which formed after Westinghouse and Areva (now Orano) got reorganised after encountering financial problems. At the same time, China’s bid for leadership in the sphere of nuclear technology is obstructed by some impediments. Among them are Russia’s dominance in breakthrough areas of nuclear engineering and Rosatom’s large market share, as well as lack of political will in some countries’ elites to build ties with China in this strategic realm, opting for competition instead.

Abstract:China is rapidly increasing its nuclear power fleet of light water reactors and will as a result need more and more uranium fuel. For now, Beijing is following a strategy known as ‘three third rule’ when it comes to the nation’s uranium supply: 1/3 of the uranium comes from domestic mining, 1/3 is obtained through direct international trade, and 1/3 is provided by Chinese companies mining abroad. To date, China has approximately 5% of world’s identified primary uranium resources (U.S.$ <130/kg uranium) as defined by the International Atomic Energy Agency but may operate 50% of the global nuclear power fleet by 2050. Domestic unconventional uranium resources that could decrease China’s dependence on foreign uranium suppliers are mostly associated with lignite, black shales and phosphate rocks. Extracting uranium from phosphate rock during fertilizer production is a well-known process that is at the edge of being monetarily profitable. Besides, this practice reduces uranium loads on agricultural soils from fertilizers drastically. In this work, we discuss potential unconventional uranium resources that could be extracted in China during phosphate rock processing. We conclude that China, the largest phosphate rock producing country in the world, could theoretically recover some 700 t unconventional uranium annually or roughly 40% of the domestically mined uranium in 2017. Most deposits show low (<30 ppm) to very low (<10 ppm) uranium concentration though that would not favor extraction. Deposits with higher (>100 ppm) uranium content exist in China, and are identified here. Uranium recovered from these deposits, and uranium recovered from imported phosphate rocks processed in China may support domestic uranium mining and as a result energy security of the Middle Kingdom.

Abstract:Existing traditional uranium mining technologies have major drawbacks, do not meet the requirements of a market economy, are ineffective, require the use of a large number of expensive injection and pumping wells, low leaching rates, require a large consumption of chemical reagent, sulfuric acid (to produce 1 ton of uranium concentrate requires a flow of 100 tons sulfuric acid). Here, a productive solution refers to a chemical solution containing the concentration of the leached therein of various useful components (metals), including uranium, dissolved therein. In the practice of exploitation of hydrogenous uranium deposits, the arrangement of technological wells has been adopted: linear (or in-line), areal (or cellular) and combined. Our proposed innovative technology for the exploitation of hydrogenous uranium deposits will be developed on the principle of piston wells using the effect of activation of a chemical solution supplied to the array of a hydrogenated uranium layer for leaching and other useful components. In the process of activation, the chemical solution is heated to t = 70 ° C, the water in the solution becomes a good solvent. Pumping wells are used as piston wells without changing the design, i.e. pumping wells are also used as injection wells. This article presents the mining and geological characteristics of technogenic uranium deposits in Kazakhstan. The basis of the raw material base of Kazakhstan's uranium is exogenous type deposits, combined into a subgroup called “infiltration”. Uranium infiltration deposits are formed by groundwater associated with regional formation zones and zones of soil-layer oxidation. The development and implementation of the method of underground well leaching of uranium (UWL) is one of the most important scientific and technical achievements of the mining industry. The main advantages of the underground leaching method compared to traditional mining methods of developing deposits are as follows: the possibility of involving poor and off-balance ores in deposits with complex geological and hydrogeological conditions, but with large reserves of uranium; Significant reduction in capital investments and terms of commissioning deposits; improving working conditions, reducing the number of miners and increasing labor productivity by 2.5-3.5 times; reducing the negative impact of uranium mining on the environ-ment.
The Mechanism of Uranium Price in Global Market and Some Advices on China Nuclear Power Development

Abstract:Based on the classic supply and demand theory of economics,the paper analyzes the price mechanism of uranium in the global market with uranium production and the number of nuclear reactors as typical indicators of supply and demand.Despite the high radioactivity,the uranium shows the same law with common goods in the international market.To uranium,the key supply factor is uranium production,and the main demand factor is the number of nuclear reactors.In addition,the proposed construction plan of nuclear reactor has an important and direct effect to the uranium price.According to the experimental results mentioned above,the thesis puts forward some advice,such as paying attention to drive factors in advance,constructing national uranium resource inventory,facilitating the change of global uranium market structure,and enhancing the information security work.

Abstract:Mining uranium from seawater is highly desirable for sustaining the increasing demand for nuclear fuel; however, access to this unparalleled reserve has been limited by competitive adsorption of a wide variety of concentrated competitors, especially vanadium. Herein, we report the creation of a series of uranyl-specific "hooks" and the decoration of them into the nanospace of porous organic polymers to afford uranium nanotraps for seawater uranium extraction. Manipulating the relative distances and angles of amidoxime moieties in the ligands enabled the creation of uranyl-specific "hooks" that feature ultrahigh affinity and selective sequestration of uranium with a distribution coefficient threefold higher compared to that of vanadium, overcoming the long-term challenge of the competing adsorption of vanadium for uranium extraction from seawater. The optimized uranium nanotrap (2.5 mg) can extract more than one-third of the uranium in seawater (5 gallons), affording an enrichment index of 3836 and thus presenting a new benchmark for uranium adsorbent. Moreover, with improved selectivity, the uranium nanotraps could be regenerated using a mild base treatment. The synergistic combination of experimental and theoretical analyses in this study provides a mechanistic approach for optimizing the selectivity of chelators toward analytes of interest.The nanotrap featuring uranyl-specific "hooks" was created, which demonstrates ultrahigh enrichment index in seawater uranium extraction, overcoming the long-term challenge of the competitive adsorption of vanadium.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Efficient extraction of uranium from seawater is expected to provide virtually infinite fuel sources to power nuclear reactors and thus enable sustainable development of nuclear energy. The extraction efficiency for uranium greatly depends on the availability of active adsorption sites on the adsorbents. Maximization of the utilization rate of the binding sites in the adsorbent is vital for improving adsorption capacity. Herein, micro-redox reactors functioned by Cu(I)/Cu(II) conversion are constructed internally in an adsorbent bearing both amidoxime and carboxyl groups to induce active regeneration of the inactivated binding sites to enhance uranium capture. This adsorbent has high adsorption capacity (962.40 mg-U/g-Ads), superior anti-fouling ability as well as excellent uranium uptake (14.62 mg-U/g-Ads) in natural seawater after 56 days, placing it at the top of high-performance sorbent materials for uranium harvest from seawater. Extraction of uranium from seawater could help with sustainable development of nuclear energy. Here the authors incorporated Cu(I)/Cu(II) microredox reactors in a seaweed-like adsorbent to enhance uranium capture by taking advantage of its adsorption and reduction effects.

Abstract:Some phosphate rock contains elevated concentrations of natural uranium. China is the largest phosphate rock producing country in the world and will soon have the largest uranium requirements in the world as well. Most phosphate rock deposits in China show low uranium concentrations (20-30 mg/kg) so that the recovery of radiotoxic heavy metals is neither economically appropriate nor ecologically necessary. China does, however, also have elevated uranium concentrations (>= 90 mg/kg) in phosphate rock deposits in Sichuan and Yunnan. We estimate that China could have recovered nearly 648 metric tU (1.43 million lb U3O8) from those mines in 2016. The amount corresponds to 9.7% of the total reported uranium requirements in this year or 39.3% of reported domestic uranium production in 2016. The future uranium recovery potential may be even higher in total numbers (1158 tU or 3.01 million lb U3O8 in 2030). The main reason are potentially increasing imports of phosphate rock from large exporting countries such as Morocco that show higher average uranium content. In addition, medium- to lower-grade domestic phosphate rock resources with larger shares of accompanying heavy metals, that include rare earths and uranium, will have to be processed. Although the uranium supply for China is currently not at risk, the supply security could be further increased by obtaining unconventional uranium from domestic and imported phosphate rock.

Abstract:The object of research is the technology of borehole uranium production with a low filtration characteristics. The purpose of the work is to increase the efficiency of borehole uranium production in complex mining and geological conditions by developing a new method based on the intensification of geotechnological processes of underground leaching of uranium, the impact of chemical reagents on the aggregate of sedimentation and mineralogical composition of ore-containing rocks of the productive horizon. At the same time, operating costs are reduced by increasing the productivity of the period of uninterrupted operation of geotechnical wells, as well as reducing the time spent working out technological blocks. Research methods include x-ray phase analysis, identification and discussion of the features, quantitative and qualitative parameters of core material and sedimentation from uranium deposits associated with the Syrdarya depression. Under laboratory conditions, the efficiency of the selected composition for the dissolution of sedimentary formations that reduce the permeability of layers was established by electron microdifraction. The applied hydrodynamic methods of well regeneration based on destruction and dispersion of sedimentation are considered and evaluated. The reagent methods used to increase the permeability of the productive horizon based on precipitation dissolution were also studied and evaluated. The results of experimental studies are analyzed and discussed, and a comparative schedule of the period of uninterrupted operation of wells is constructed. The effectiveness of the applied method for restoring the permeability of the productive horizon with the use of a complex chemical reagents. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that mineralogical studies of the core material composition indicate a complex structure of ores, in complex mining and geological conditions. The practical significance of the study lies in the high efficiency and applicability of the considered method of intensifying borehole uranium production in areas with low filtration characteristics.
The Influence of the Physicochemical Characteristics of Ores on the Efficiency of Underground Well Leaching of Uranium Deposits in Kazakhstan

Abstract:The features of uranium mining on Kazakhstan's enterprises have been examined, and uranium deposits located in the Syrdarya and Shu-Sarysu depressions have been described. Actual and projected data on the development of technological blocks in areas with complex geological structures have been analyzed and compared. Core samples were collected and, using X-ray diffraction analysis, quantitative and qualitative characteristics as well as mineral compositions of ores from various productive horizons of uranium deposits in the Syrdarya and Shu-Sarysu depressions were comparatively analyzed. It was determined that the ores in the Syrdarya depression are relatively homogeneous compared to those in the Shu-Sarysu depression, although in some places, clay minerals and gypsum are present, which hinder the uranium leaching processes. In the ores of the Shu-Sarysu depression, clay minerals that impede the uranium leaching processes are present in certain areas. Microscopic analysis of core material samples using a LEICA DM 2500 P microscope revealed particle sizes and shapes, as well as their distribution within the structure of host rocks in the productive horizon. Using X-ray diffraction analysis, mineral compositions of sediment-forming components during uranium well mining in the considered productive horizons were determined and comparatively analyzed. It was established that in the geotechnological wells of the Syrdarya depression, sediments of predominantly chemical origin, such as gypsum, are formed. However, in the geotechnological wells of the Shu-Sarysu depression, sediments of mechanical origin, consisting predominantly of quartz particles and clay minerals, are formed. Based on the obtained data, a method for intensifying underground uranium leaching in complex geological conditions has been developed, which involves dissolving sediment formations and increasing the oxidative–reductive potential of the leaching solution. The proposed and experimentally substantiated universal methodology for enhancing uranium well production involves the dissolution and prevention of precipitation using hydrofluoric acid solutions, as well as the oxidation of uranium dioxide with hydrogen peroxide.

Abstract:A noted Western specialist on the 1986 accident at the Chernobyl' nuclear power plant examines the recent history and current status of nuclear power development in the successor states of the former Soviet Union. The paper analyzes strategies nuclear proponents have employed since Chernobyl' to deflect criticism of nuclear power generation and build support for an enhanced role for the industry. Abstract:With consensus on the climate issue, most countries have successfully put forward their carbon emission targets. Due to low carbon and mature technology, nuclear energy has become the focus of scholars. The development of nuclear energy is inseparable from the support of uranium resources. Due to the geographically uneven distribution of uranium resources, the flow of resources across the globe satisfies both supply and demand. Therefore, research on the characteristics of the global uranium resource trade and its evolution trends can provide a reference for decision-makers to formulate relevant uranium resource trade policies to ensure the security of the national uranium resource trade. Based on the perspective of the industry chain, this paper constructed an upstream natural uranium trade complex network (upstream) and an enriched uranium trade complex network (downstream) to analyze the characteristics and evolution trends of GURTNs at the global, community, and national levels. The results show that: (1) The trade of enriched uranium is mainly concentrated between developed countries such as European and North American countries. Natural uranium is a raw material, and its trade characteristics are greatly affected by uranium price fluctuations. (2) The evolution of the global natural uranium trade community is dominated by the significant uranium-resource-demanding countries. The global natural uranium trade pattern will be difficult to change in the short term. (3) With the expiration of the USA–Russia enriched uranium trade agreement, this will become an uncertain factor affecting the evolution of the global enriched uranium trade pattern. (4) Since the United States and France are deeply involved in the global uranium resources trade, both have a higher ability of anti-control and control in GURTNs, which is inseparable from the uranium resource trade strategies of the two countries. The paper concludes by suggesting corresponding policy recommendations that can inform policymakers in formulating relevant trade policies.

Abstract:Abstract This work efficiently investigated the simultaneous extraction of uranium (U) and niobium (Nb) from a low-grade natural betafite ore by using novel technique, namely, sulfatizing roasting coupled to sulfuric acid leaching process. First, the sulfatizing roasting was adopted to alert the properties of the raw ore, aiming to destroy the crystal structure of the ores and convert the valuable elements to soluble sulfate compounds. Moreover, the influences of the parameters affecting the sulfatizing roasting including roasting temperature, amount of sulfuric acid, and roasting time were studied. The results indicated that the extraction of U and Nb from the ores with sulfatizing roasting was an order of magnitude higher than the extraction of U and Nb from the ores without roasting under the same test conditions. Then, the effects of amount of sulfuric acid concentration, liquid–solid ratio, leaching temperature, and leaching time on U and Nb recoveries were systematically investigated. To verify the process parameters of extracting U and Nb for the novel technique, three validating tests were conducted, and the results showed that over 95% of U and 85% of Nb were leached out under the optimal conditions. The novel technique was proven as advantageous since it conspicuously improved the leaching rates of U and Nb and promoted the refractory natural betafite ores to become an economic source for uranium.

Abstract:Uranium (U) roll-front deposits constitute a valuable source for an economical extraction by in situ recovery (ISR) mining. Such technology may induce changes in the subsurface microbiota, raising questions about the way their activities could build a functional ecosystem in such extreme environments (i.e.: oligotrophy and high SO4 concentration and salinity). Additionally, more information is needed to dissipate the doubts about the microbial role in the genesis of such U orebodies. A U roll-front deposit hosted in an aquifer driven system (in Zoovch Ovoo, Mongolia), intended for mining by acid ISR, was previously explored and showed to be governed by a complex bacterial diversity, linked to the redox zonation and the geochemical conditions. Here for the first time, transcriptional activities of microorganisms living in such U ore deposits are determined and their metabolic capabilities allocated in the three redox-inherited compartments, naturally defined by the roll-front system. Several genes encoding for crucial metabolic pathways demonstrated a strong biological role controlling the subsurface cycling of many elements including nitrate, sulfate, metals and radionuclides (e.g.: uranium), through oxidation-reduction reactions. Interestingly, the discovered transcriptional behaviour gives important insights into the good microbial adaptation to the geochemical conditions and their active contribution to the stabilization of the U ore deposits. Overall, evidences on the importance of these microbial metabolic activities in the aquifer system are discussed that may clarify the doubts on the microbial role in the genesis of low-temperature U roll-front deposits, along the Zoovch Ovoo mine.
Efficient uranium sequestration ability and mechanism of live and inactivated strain of Streptomyces sp. HX-1 isolated from uranium wastewater

Abstract:Prokaryotes are effective biosorbents for the recovery of uranium and other heavy metals. However, the potential mechanism of uranium bioaccumulation by filamentous strain (actinobacteria) remains unclear. This study demonstrates the potential for and mechanism of uranium bioaccumulation by living (L-SS) and inactivated (I-SS) Streptomyces sp. HX-1 isolated from uranium mine waste streams. Uranium accumulation experiments showed that L-SS and I-SS had efficient uranium adsorption potentials, with removal rates of 92.93 and 97.42%, respectively. Kinetic and equilibrium data indicated that the bioaccumulation process was consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic, Langmuir, and Sips isotherm models. FTIR indicated that the main functional groups of L-SS and I-SS binding uranium were uranyl, carboxyl, and phosphate groups. Moreover, the results of XRD, XPS, SEM-EDS, and TEM-EDS analyses revealed for the first time that L-SS has biomineralization and bioreduction capacity against uranium. L-SS mineralize U(VI) into NH4UO2PO4 and [Formula: see text] through the metabolic activity of biological enzymes (phosphatases). In summary, Streptomyces sp. HX-1 is a novel and efficient uranium-fixing biosorbent for the treatment of uranium-contaminated wastewater.
