Abstract:PURPOSE: This study explored the influence of college students’ physical activity on their sleep quality and examined the mediating role of emotions in this relationship. METHODS: The study used the International Physical Activity Scale (short volume), Positive and Negative Affect Schedule and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Data from 422 valid questionnaires were analyzed using SPSS statistical software to identify the differences in demographic dimensions between college students’ physical activity, mood and sleep quality. Correlation analysis, hierarchy regression analysis and mediating effect analysis were then conducted. Finally, Amos was used to establish a structural equation model between the three variables to verify the mediating role of emotions. RESULTS: (1) College students' physical activity level (2.481 ± 0.667), PSQI score (5.422 ± 2.744). Only at the middle level; the college students’ degree of positive emotions (29 ± 6.187) higher than their degree of negative emotions (21 ± 6.626). (2) Different genders showed significantly different levels of physical activity, positive emotions and sleep quality (t = 5.120, P = 0.000; t = 5.120, p = 0.000; t = -3.491, p = 0.001). (3) The college students’ physical activity level, positive emotions and sleep quality were positively correlated in pairs, and negative emotions were significantly negatively correlated with sleep quality. (4) Positive emotions mediated the relationship between the physical activity level and sleep quality of the college students, PSQI score = -0.136*physical activity level-0.16*positive emotion. Negative emotion had no mediating effect on the relationship between the physical activity level and sleep quality of the college students. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that the physical activity level of college students not only directly affects their sleep quality, but also does so indirectly, through the mediating effect of positive emotions.
