Abstract:Nanoparticle-enhanced laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (NELIBS) represents a promising tool for detecting trace elements. This work improves NELIBS by substituting metal nanoparticles with nano-silica particles to achieve rapid detection of Cs elements at low concentrations. This substitution effectively prevents cluster formation and simplifies the experiment preparation process. The research optimizes factors such as target movement speed, nanoparticle concentration, and nanoparticle size to identify the optimal experimental parameters. Comparative analysis of the 3D morphology of laser ablation areas with and without nanoparticles reveals that evenly distributed nano-silica particles on the target surface provide the most effective colloidal particle lens array (CPLA) effect, and increasing the roughness of the target surface thereby enhancing the quality of laser ablation. With a laser frequency of 10 Hz, optimal characteristic spectral signals are achieved when the target movement speed exceeds 2 mm/s. Under conditions of a concentration of 0.1 mg/mL and an average particle size of 50 nm, the greatest enhancement effect on Cs element LIBS characteristic spectral signals is observed. Consequently, the limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) of elemental Cs by LIBS technology are reduced to 0.45 mg/L and 1.51 mg/L, respectively, facilitating real-time detection of Cs element at low concentrations. In addition, the nano-silica particles have also had a certain enhancement effect on the spectral signal of elemental properties in the target, proving that enhancing the LIBS characteristic spectral signal using nano-silica particles is a feasible method.
Effect of Ag Nanoclusters Deposited with Magnetron Sputtering on Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Enhancement

Abstract:In this paper, we report experimental observation of the influence of Ag nanoclusters growth on nanoparticle enhanced laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (NELIBS). In this work, we studied changes in the emission intensity of LIBS, on the example of Si I line at the wavelength of 390.55 nm, as a function of the silver nanoclusters coverage. The emission intensity initially increases before beginning to saturate, and then decreases with increasing Ag nanoclusters coverage. The obtained Ag clusters show a red-shifted plasmon resonance peak with increasing cluster coverage. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to provide information changes in the cluster size and shape. Additionally, a 3D finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) simulation was performed to estimate the electric field enhancement numerically.

Abstract:Metal nanoparticle deposition on sample surface is a promising approach to enhance the emission signal during laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). In this article, strong optical emission enhancement was achieved by combining nanoparticle enhanced LIBS (NELIBS) and double pulse LIBS (DP-LIBS) on a crystal SiO2 sample by using femtosecond laser. Thermal dewetting was used to deposit gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs) on sample surface and NPs with different size were obtained by altering the thickness of the Au film. It was found that both the size and distribution of Au NPs significantly affected the enhancement effect of NELIBS and the Au NPs made from 7.5 nm gold film had the best enhancement effect. The fundamental features of NELIBS enhancement for dielectric target were investigated by studying the photon absorption process. At a low laser fluence of 4.4 J/cm(2), an enhancement factor of about 13 for spectrum intensity was obtained in NELIBS and reached to 30 after being combined with DP-LIBS. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Chlorine and Sulfur Determination in Water Using Indirect Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy.

Abstract:The detection sensitivity of chlorine (Cl) and sulfur (S) elements is poor using direct laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) because of the high ionization energy of Cl and S. Therefore, a new technique, namely indirect laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (ID-LIBS), was proposed to improve the detection sensitivity of Cl and S elements. The method detected Cl in water by indirectly detecting the excess silver (Ag) after the precipitation reaction of Ag and chloride. Similarly, the method indirectly detected S in water by detecting the excess barium (Ba) after the precipitation reaction of Ba and sulfate, due to Ag and Ba with low ionization energy and easy excitation. The lines of Ag I 546.5 nm and Ba I 553.5 nm were detected. The R-2 values of 0.999 and 0.997 were obtained for Cl and S, respectively. The limit of quantitation (LoQ) was 2 mg/L for Cl and 5 mg/L for S. The detection sensitivity was improved by about three orders of magnitude compared to using Cl I 822.17 nm and S I 921.28 nm. The results showed that the technique of indirect LIBS can achieve the sensitive detection of Cl and S in water indicating that the technique has tremendous potential for element analysis of water.
A Novel Approach for LIBS Enhancement of Cations Underwater

Abstract:Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) has been developing as a promising technique with many advantages, including on-line, real time, stand off and multi-element detection etc. At present, LIBS application has involved many areas; more and more researchers have studied LIBS as an in-situ measurement for oceanic sensing. In this paper, a novel approach for LIBS enhancement has been introduced and used to improve the sensitivity of underwater detection. In this approach, the replacement reaction assisted with the electric field was utilized to strengthen the reaction and increase local cations concentration for depositing on the underlay surface. With the aid of replacement reaction and electric field, the LIBS sensitivity for cations detection underwater was found to be enhanced significantly, hence the detection limit. The detection limit of 16 ppb was achieved for copper cations (Cu2+) detection in the water solution of CuSO4. The obtained results suggested that this novel approach has great potential to be developed as an effective method for cations detection underwater.
Study on the improvement of laser induced plasma detection method by Au-nanoparticles

Abstract:In order to improve the emission spectrum intensity of plasma in laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), a method of depositing Au-nanoparticles on the surface of copper samples was proposed. The Au-nanoparticles enhanced LIBS (NELIBS) was deposited on the surface of the sample, and the emission intensity enhancement factor and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of NELIBS and LIBS were obtained. Experimental results show that the intensity of plasma radiation spectral signal can be effectively enhanced by depositing Au-nanoparticles LIBS (NELIBS) on the surface of copper samples. The copper element line enhancement factor can reach up to 8.01, and the trace element magnesium element line enhancement factor is up to 6.01. The enhancement factor decreases with the increase of laser energy and tends to be stable. NELIBS can significantly improve the signal-to-noise ratio. The copper element is optimal when the laser pulse energy is 80 mJ, and the magnesium element reaches 50 mJ when the laser energy is optimal. The trace elements in the sample cannot be detected due to the low spectral intensity and poor signal-to-noise ratio. This method can effectively improve the detection capability.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is fast, on-line, causes little sample damage, and can be applied in remote field locations. In recent years, LIBS has been widely used in many fields of scientific research for element detection. Further application of LIBS is limited by the strong matrix effect, poor repeatability, and relatively weak detection sensitivity. The detection sensitivity is an important factor and needs to be improved for LIBS detection of minor or trace elements in samples. A variety of methods have been developed to improve detection sensitivity of LIBS. In this invited review paper, we discuss improvements in the LIBS detection sensitivity achieved with physical enhancement methods, chemical enhancement methods, mathematical methods, and combinations of multiple methods. We discuss the enhancement mechanisms, sensitivity improvements, configurations, and effects of key factors for various methods. The advantages, disadvantages, and real-time capabilities of these methods are reviewed. Finally, new trends and future perspectives for LIBS as an efficient analytical tool are discussed.

Abstract:Due to plasma quenching caused by the dense water medium, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) faces challenges such as strong continuous background radiation, weak and broadened characteristic spectral lines when directly detecting metal elements in liquids. In this work, we introduced a simple approach to improve underwater LIBS signal with solid substrate-assisted method, which requires no sample pre-treatment and simple operation, thus has potential for in-situ marine application. In this method, four submerged solid substrates (Zn, Cu, Ni, Si) were employed to investigate the breakdown characteristics of underwater LIBS and the mechanism of spectral enhancement by using a CaCl2 solution. The results demonstrated significant improvement in the detection sensitivity of Ca with these substrates even at a short laser pulse with a relative low laser energy (10 mJ). Among them, the semiconductor Si substrate exhibited the best enhancement effect, with an enhancement factor over 75 for the Ca ionic lines at 393.4 nm and 396.8 nm, and an enhancement factor of 29 for the Ca atomic line at 422.7 nm, respectively. This mainly because the presence of substrate decreases the breakdown threshold of liquid sample, and higher plasma excitation temperature and electron density are obtained, accordingly leading to higher signal intensity. Furthermore, significant plasma emission enhancements for a wide range of elements are also achieved from seawater. These findings can contribute to the development of compact underwater in-situ LIBS sensors with low power consumption meanwhile ensuring high detection sensitivity.

Coulombic Effect of Amphiphiles with Metal Nanoparticles on Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Enhancement

Abstract:In this paper, an experimental evidence of enhanced laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) emission using nanoparticles and amphiphiles was reported. The measurement showed an enhanced emission from the K-I lines at the wavelengths of 766.5 and 769.9 nm when the cationic amphiphile of hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide was adsorbed on Au NPs, but no LIBS signal was observed for the anionic amphiphile of sodium dodecyl sulfate or for Au NPs alone. This significant enhancement can be attributed to Coulombic force of attraction between the cationic amphiphile and negatively charged Au NPs and hence the enhanced electric field due to the existence of Au NPs. The detection limit for potassium was shown to be 13 ppb. The new technique provides an effective method for the improvement of the detection sensitivity of LIBS.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an elemental analysis technique widely used throughout science and engineering. A limitation of LIBS is the low analytical sensitivity for trace elements. Therefore, it is of great significance to enhance the signal intensity and reduce the detection limit of LIBS. To enhance LIBS signals, here we propose a method, multiple discharges-enhanced LIBS. The measurements were performed on a solid aluminum alloy. A nanosecond laser was focused on the alloy to generate plasma. The plasma was sputtered into the air between the two discharge electrodes, which triggered the discharge. Multiple discharges were generated by using a high-frequency discharge power source. The multiple discharges excite, heat the plasma and extend the plasma duration, thereby enhancing the signal intensity. Here, a direct current pulse power source with a frequency of 100 kHz was used, and five discharges occurred after each laser-induced breakdown. We show that compared with LIBS, the plasma duration is extended by approximately 50 tes. Multiple discharges-enhanced LIBS increases the signal intensity of Mg II (at similar to 279 nm) by about 48 times; Al II (at similar to 358 nm), 72 times; trace element Mn I (at similar to 403 nm), 6. 3 times; trace element Cu I (at similar to 403 nm) , 8. 3 times. The detection limit of Mn I (at similar to 403 nm) is reduced by a factor of 6; Cu, 8. Multiple discharges-enhanced LIBS dramatically enhances the signal intensity and improves the detection limit of LIBS, and it expands the applications of LIBS. This method has the potential to be applied to the identifications of valuables, rare materials and cultural relics.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an atomic emission spectroscopy, which has been used to analyze the composition of materials in many areas. In order to improve the detection sensitivity of LIBS, many methods have been proposed to improve the spectral intensity of LIBS. It has been proved that the intensity of femtosecond LIBS spectra of metal can be enhanced by using circularly polarized laser as excitation source. In this paper, the effect of polarization of laser beam on emission intensity of nanosecond LIB S was investigated. The spectral intensity of nanosecond LIB S of brass was enhanced with circularly polarized laser excited.

Abstract:In this paper, porous electrospun ultrafine fiber with a nanoparticle coating was proposed as an effective approach to enhance the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) signal for metal ions in aqueous systems. It is known that the LIBS technique is very limited when used for liquid sample analysis. On the other hand, in practical applications, many LIBS measurements have been accomplished in a liquid environment. A signal enhancement method for aqueous sample LIBS analysis was presented in this work, where Au nanoparticles and a solid-phase support were combined for the first time for aqueous sample analysis with LIBS. The system operation was relatively simple, which only required Au nanoparticles being dropped onto the surface of porous electrospun ultrafine fibers before LIBS analysis. Significant signal enhancement was achieved due to the integration of the merits of the Au nanoparticles and the ultrafine fibers. Nanoparticles possess significant LIBS signal enhancement effects by providing several plasma ignition points and then causing more efficient emissions. In addition, Au nanoparticles could also help to decrease the breakdown threshold of target elements for LIBS analysis. The electrospun ultrafine fibers as solid-phase support can accommodate a larger volume of aqueous sample. Meanwhile, the aqueous solution on the fiber surface was easy to evaporate. The experimental results showed that the limits of detection (LODs) with this method were significantly improved, 0.5 μg/mL for Cr, 0.5 μg/mL for Pb, and 1.1 μg/mL for Cu, respectively, compared with 2.0 μg/mL for Cr and 3.3 μg/mL for Cu in the previous research. In the proposed method, signal enhancement could be achieved without any extra equipment, which makes the LIBS technique feasible for direct measurement of an aqueous sample.
Enhancing biomarker detection sensitivity through tag-laser induced breakdown spectroscopy with NELIBS

Abstract:Nanoparticle-enhanced laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy and Tag-LIBS are two approaches that have been shown to significantly enhance LIBS sensitivity and specificity. In an effort to combine both of these approaches, we have initiated a study on the effect of the presence of Silver nanoparticle concentrations on Europium (Eu) and Ytterbium (Yb) LIBS signals. These elements are part of metal-loaded polymers conjugated to antibodies. We observe a signal enhancement of the emission lines of about 10 and 12 times for the Europium and Ytterbium lines. This study shows that Europium and Ytterbium are enhanced differently; Europium shows enhancement for both neutral and ionized species while the Ytterbium shows enhancement only for ionized species. Additionally, we found that NPs at 0.1 mg/mL and 0.05 mg/mL achieved maximum enhancement for Eu and Yb, respectively. Based on our findings, the temperature and electron density of Eu and Yb are not significantly different for NPs concentrations, but the total signal intensity is significantly higher for optimum NP concentrations for both Eu and Yb.

Abstract:A novel approach, named guided conversion enhancement, has been established to improve the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) sensitivity of cation detection in water. Two processes were involved in this approach: the main part was replacement reaction that converted the cations in water to solid granules on the surface of an immersed metallic sheet; the other was electric assistance that increased local cation concentration and strengthened the reaction. With the aid of replacement reaction and an electric field, a detection limit of 16 ppb was achieved for copper cation (Cu2+) detection in a water solution of CuSO4. The obtained results suggest that this approach has significant potential to be developed as an effective method for underwater cation detection.
Analysis of Deliquescent Chloride Salt by Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy with Controlled Uniform Precipitation

Abstract:BACKGROUND:The electrolytic efficiency in magnesium (Mg) production by molten salt electrolysis is mainly affected by the chloride content, which is determined by the metal content in the cooled molten salt. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a potential element detection method in cooled molten salt element detection. However, the cooled molten chloride salt is easily deliquescent, which greatly affects the LIBS detection results. RESULTS:To solve the problem, a liquid-phase precipitation method based on the addition of a dispersant named as controlled uniform precipitation (CUP) method was proposed to pretreat the samples. Compared with the conventional powder compacting method and precipitation method, the CUP obtained the highest spectral stability and detection accuracy. The average relative standard deviation (ARSD) of Mg, Ca, and Na decreased from the 51.80%, 77.04%, and 44.01% to 6.77%, 6.27%, and 29.97%, the determination coefficient of the calibration curve (R2) increased from 0.044, 0.084, and -0.109 to 0.974, 0.954, and 0.802, and the average relative error (ARE) decreased from 58.49%, 52.46%, and 99.78% to 8.58%, 11.28%, and 29.38%, respectively, compared with the powder compacting method. Further investigation showed that the CUP method suppressed the sample deliquescence and the coffee ring effect, leading to the performance improvement of LIBS quantitative detection. SIGNIFICANCE:The CUP provided an effective method of detecting metal elements for deliquescent samples and showed applied potential for other precipitable elements detection.

Abstract:In this study, a new approach for Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) with gold nanofilm (NF) deposited on sample surface was carried out by using femtosecond laser. Different materials including metallic sample, semiconductor sample and dielectric sample were tested. Strong emission enhancement was obtained on SiO2, ceramic and Si sample. It was found that different lines in ceramic sample had different enhancement effect, which was probably related to concentration of different substances in ceramic. The enhancement effect was found to weaken with the increase of laser fluence. Enhancement factors of about 14 for SiO2, 5 for ceramic and 3 for Si sample were achieved at laser fluence of 3.3 J/cm(2), which decreased to 9 for SiO2, 3 for ceramic and 1.5 for Si sample at laser fluence of 8.8 J/cm(2). The mechanism of nanofilm-enhanced LIBS (NFELIBS) was localized surface plasmon resonance, which could change the dominant photon ionization process of sample.

Abstract:Nanoparticle-Enhanced Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (NELIBS) has gained much attention due to its capability of improving spectral intensity and detection sensitivity. However, there is no clear picture of the technology. For example, the enhancement ratios in existing studies were found to be from less than 5 to higher than 100 times, which need more clarification regarding the condition dependence of the enhancement ratio. Also, most of the previous studies were focused on enhancement effects and experimental optimization of NELIBS, leaving other aspects such as repeatability almost blank. In this study, we summarized the available results and made supplementary experiments to make an overall comparison. Special attention was paid to the effect of pre-ablation as well as the signal repeatability of NELIBS. Abstract:Laser-ablation laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy(LA-LIBS) based on single Nd:YAG laser is used to analyze copper impurity in silver jewellery with enhanced sensitivity and minimal sample ablation. 6-30 folds signal enhancement can be achieved under the re-excitation of the breakdown laser and the spatial resolution is only determined by the ablation laser. 50 ppm limit of detection of copper is achieved when the crater diameter is 17.2 μm under current experimental condition. This technique gives higher analysis sensitivity under the same sample ablation in comparison with single pulse(SP) LIBS. It is useful for high sensitive element microanalysis of precious samples.
