Abstract:Deep eutectic solvents (DES)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite materials can remove dibenzothiophene (DBT) from fuel oil by adsorption desulfurization. However, the whole synthesis process is complicated, and the DES/rGO is high-cost and not strong enough, which limits its application in industry. Therefore, a one-step method to produce DES/rGO composite materials is proposed. The performance of desulfurization was studied and the feasibility of industrial application was analyzed. First, the proposed method can improve the single extraction efficiency to 94.8% without a complicated process. Secondly, the DES/rGO can also be reused and recycled. Third, the proposed method overcomes the inconvenient storage and transportation of liquid DES. Finally, the proposed method could effectively reduce the cost of desulphurization in the industry.

Abstract:One source of air pollution is the combustion of sulfur compounds in fuel oil. Reducing sulfur content in fuel oil has become a hot issue demanding timely solutions. Using ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) to remove sulfides in fuel oil has achieved good results presently. However, since DESs are liquid and their transportation and separation are inconvenient, a new way is proposed that the DESs are loaded on the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with large specific surface area and good chemical stability. A series of composites materials (DESs/CNTs) were prepared. Finally, they are applied to the removal of sulfides in fuel oil. This loading method, which imparts introduced unique physico-chemical properties of the DESs to the carrier materials, preserves both advantages while overcoming some of the problems with DESs. The interaction between DESs and CNTs is mutual promotion. Therefore, this study has important theoretical significance and industrial application value. Under optimal conditions, when the reagent ChCl/p-TsOH (1 : 2) was loaded on multi-walled CNTs (OD = 30–60 nm) to prepare the composite material (ChCl/p-TsOH)/CNTs, the single desulfurization rate of the composite material was 95.8%. Finally, the catalytic/oxidation mechanism was studied systematically and this work would provide a green route for the desulfurization of fuels.

Abstract:Sulfur-containing compounds in fuel oil is one of the major pollutants that contributes to air pollution. To solve this issue, separation of sulfurs is crucial to produce ultra-clean fuel oil according to Euro V standard. Conventional method uses hydrodesulfurization to separate sulfur, however the system requires harsh conditions to operate in a separation unit. Morever, it is inefficient to remove sterically hindered sulfur compounds such as dibenzothiophene, benzothiophene and 4, 6-dimethyldibenzothiophene. An alternative to the current technology is using integrated extractive and catalytic-oxidative desulfurization. Many researchers has attempted to use ionic liquid as the extractant, however due to its complexity of synthesis and expensive starting material, the analogue of ionic liquid which is deep eutectic solvent (DES) could be a promising candidate to desulfurize fuel oil. In this work, four types of glycol-based DES (glycerol, ethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol and poly(ethylene glycol) 400 (PEG)) with tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBAC) as salt have been synthesized in different mole ratios to study the effect of glycols towards desulfurization efficiency. Higher desulfurization can be achieved when using DES compared to glycol itself as solvent due to the synergistic effect of salt and glycols. The performance of desulfurization can reach as high as 66.24% when using TBAC:PEG in 1:2 mole ratio in ambient condition in the presence of hydrogen peroxide as oxidant and graphene oxide as catalyst. The hydrogen peroxide helps to oxidize dibenzothiphene into high polar dibenzothiophene sulfone so that it be easily extracted into the layer of DES and the process is mediated by the graphene oxide. The main reason for the enhanced performance is longer repeating ethoxy chains of polyethylene glycol which favoured the oxidized sulfur species to be extracted. Abstract:FeS has received widespread attention due to advantages such as high capacity, low-budget, and friendly to the environment. But side reactions during the charging and discharging process result in volume expansion of FeS, which limits its application and further development. In this work, FeS@graphene composites were prepared by a single step pyrolytic sulfidation method using PEG as the carbon source, FeCl3·6H2O as the iron source, metal chloride and organic alcohol as a deep eutectic solvent. The prepared composites which were characterized by SEM and TEM exhibited a strong bond between FeS and graphene, graphene had a lamellar structure, and FeS nanoparticles formed a homogeneous dispersion. Among the prepared composite material electrodes, the FeS/G-550 electrode displayed the best electrochemical properties with a high specific capacitance (initial discharge capacity: 1200 mAhg-1; current density: 0.1 A g-1), excellent rate capability (discharge specific capacitance of 443 mAh·g-1 at the current density of 5 A g-1), and good cyclic stability (capacity retention rate: 91%).

Abstract:The removal of nitrogen compounds (N-compounds) from fuels has attracted considerable attention because of the necessity to reduce nitrogen oxide emission and improve sulfur elimination. In this work, we reported a novel denitrogenation method of fuels using deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as extractants, and demonstrated the essential role of a rational control of the physicochemical character of DESs in achieving superior denitrogenation performance. Among the investigated DESs, the 1 : 2 molar mixture of choline chloride and phenylacetic acid presented the best denitrogenation performance, showing simultaneous efficient removal of both basic and non-basic N-compounds. Without chemical reactions, the extraction efficiencies of pyridine and carbazole at 308 K with a 1 : 1 DES : oil mass ratio were 99.2% and 98.2%, respectively, and the selectivities to n-heptane were higher than 10 000. This was better than the performance of compared conventional solvents. The extraction efficiency was not sensitive to the DES : oil mass ratio and temperature, and remained unchanged after four regeneration cycles. In addition to the "green solvents" character of DESs, these results collectively demonstrate the considerable potential of DESs as promising materials for the green and efficient denitrogenation of fuels.

Abstract:A green method for synthesizing Pd nanoparticles/graphene composites from a choline chloride-oxalic acid deep eutectic solvent (DES) without a reducing agent or a surfactant is reported. Deep eutectic solvents are usually composed of halide salts and hydrogen-bond donors, and many are biocompatible and biodegradable. The merits of deep eutectic solvents include that they serve as reducing agents and dispersants, and Pd nanoparticles are tightly anchored to graphene. The size and dispersion of Pd particles are improved when supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) is used because it has gaslike diffusivity and near-zero surface tension, which results in excellent wettability between the scCO2 and the carbon surface. The prepared sc-Pd NPs/GR/SPCE shows excellent activity toward glycerol oxidation compared to composites not fabricated by scCO2 processes. This study demonstrates the potential of using this scCO2-assisted protocol combined with deep eutectic solvents to further construct nanoparticles/graphene composites.
Preparation of Wo3/C Composite and Its Application in Oxidative Desulfurization of Fuel

Abstract:The WO3/C composite was successfully prepared by calcination of a mixture of WO3 and g-C3N4 at 520 degrees C. The as-synthesized samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), electronic differential system (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectrometry (IR) and the Brunner-Emmet-Teller (BET) techniques. The WO3/C composite, in comparison with the WO3 and C3N4, features smaller particle size, bigger surface area and higher desulphurization performance. The influence of the reaction temperature, the catalyst dosage, the reaction time, the oxidant dosage, the sulfide type and the extractant dose on desulfurization reaction was studied. The results showed that the WO3/C composite revealed a higher desulfurization activity than the WO3. The desulfurization rate could reach up to 95.8% under optimal conditions covering a catalyst dosage of 0.02 g, a H2O2 amount of 0.2 mL, a 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethyl sulfate (EMIES) amount of 1.0 mL, a reaction temperature of 70 degrees C and a reaction time of 180 min. After five recycles, the desulfurization activity of catalyst did not significantly decline.

Abstract:Herein, by screening 89 porous materials (metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks), the ultradeep desulfurization from model gasolines was investigated by the facile adsorptive approach by grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. The accessible surface area and void fraction ratio of porous materials are of great significance for the ultradeep desulfurization of gasoline. ZnBDC, MOF-70, MOF-69C, UIO-66, Cd3BTB2, ZIF-77, ZIF-69, and ZIF-2 are identified with ultrahigh selectivity for thiophene/n-octane systems at 298 K and 10 kPa. The relationship between the loading amount of thiophene in materials and the difference of isosteric heat of thiophene and n-octane (or benzene) was confirmed. The pressure swing adsorption and temperature swing adsorption are considered to mimic the separation in industrial processes. Functionalization (impregnation) is an efficient route to boost the selectivity of removal of sulfur-containing compounds from gasoline. Adsorption and separation mechanisms for thiophene from gasolines are determined by the composition and inner structure of materials.
Supercritical deposition route of preparing pt/graphene composites and their catalytic performance toward methanol electrooxidation

Abstract:The production of effective loading and direct deposition of Pt nanoparticles on graphene is difficult because this intriguing carbon material has highly hydrophobic surface properties. In this work, Pt/graphene sheet (GS) composites were successfully synthesized via a simple, effective, and environmentally benign one-pot supercritical carbon dioxide deposition route using dimethyl (1,5-cyclooctadiene) platinum(II) (PtMe2COD) as a soluble organometallic precursor. The preparation process obviates the need for solvents, which are often volatile and toxic. No post-treatment processes such as washing and drying are needed. Transmission electron microscopy shows that ultrafine metal nanoparticles with an average size as small as similar to 2 nm are densely and evenly decorated on the hydrophobic surfaces of. GS at Pt loadings up to 80 wt %. Electrochemical studies reveal that the prepared Pt/GS composites possess notably higher catalytic activity and better stability toward methanol electrooxidation in comparison with Pt/multiwalled carbon nanotube and Pt/carbon black composites. The supercritical carbon dioxide deposition method could be easily extended to the fabrication of other graphene-based metal composites with desirable properties by selecting suitable organometallic precursors.
SYNTHESIS OF DEEP EUTECTIC SOLVENTS FOR THE REMOVAL OF SULFUR-CONTAINING COMPOUNDS FROM THE DIESEL FRACTION

Abstract:Two types of deep eutectic solvents (DES) have been synthesized for the extraction of sulfur-containing (SS) compounds from the diesel fraction (DF). In DES of the first type the acceptor is ZnCl2, while the donors are glycerol, polyethylene glycol, ethylene glycol, butylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, and n-butanol. In DES of the second type the acceptor is tetrabutylammonium bromide, while the donors are polyethylene glycol, glycerin, urea, imidazole, and phenol. Their extractive activity towards dibenzothiophene derivatives and cyclic sulfides was determined by using the diesel fraction (DF) as an example. The optimal conditions for the extraction process have been determined; hence the extraction time was 10-15 min. Extraction temperature in the range of 20 - 40 °C has little effect on the extraction ability of DES. Extraction was carried out at 30 °C. The results obtained showed that there is a certain dependence of the residual content of SC in DF in the case of the extraction with zinc chloride and polyols served as DES. A monotone decreasing in the degree of extraction is observed in the series butanol - polypropylene glycol - polyethylene glycol - butylene glycol - triethylene glycol - glycerin - ethylene glycol. In the case of extraction of SC with DES based on tetrabutylammonium, the degree of extraction decreases in the series - PEG - G - EG - imidazole. The maximum degree of extraction of SC is achieved with such DES as ZnCl2-butanol and tetrabutylammonium bromide-phenol. The extraction of homologues of dibenzothiophene and cyclic sulfides by the ZnCl2-butanol extraction system is located in the series: dimethyldibenzthiophene (100%) - methyldibenzthiophene (96.3%) - dibenzthiophene (74.7%) - cyclic sulfides (89%). The sequence of the extraction of SC in the tetrabutylammonium bromide–phenol system is the same: dimethyldibenzthiophene (98%) - methyldibenzthiophene (97%) - dibenzthiophene (98%) - cyclic sulfides (74%). Abstract:The concept of sustainability has progressively evolved into a consensus for achieving long-term development, and the significance of solvents in regard of green chemistry and sustainable processes cannot be underestimated. Hydrogen-bonding interactions and heterogeneity at the nanoscale determine the outstanding solvating properties of deep eutectic solvents (DESs). A relatively wide electrochemical window is the prerequisite for the preparation of more materials (especially active metals) by electrodeposition in these eutectic systems. The role of DESs in fabrication process may be chemical or physical, although the line between the two is blurred. At times, DESs function as a reducing agent; while in other cases, they solely provide a liquid environment to facilitate the reaction. This review provides a set of methodology to guide the preparation of materials with specific morphology and functions.

Abstract:This study employs Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and traditional all-atom Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations to reveal atomistic insights into a task-specific Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES) supported by graphene oxide with the aim of mimicking its application in the natural gas desulfurization process. The DES, composed of N,N,N′,N′-tetramthyl-1,6-hexane diamine acetate (TMHDAAc) and methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) supported by graphene oxide, demonstrates improved efficiency in removing hydrogen sulfide from methane. Optimized structure and HOMO-LUMO orbital analyses reveal the distinct spatial arrangements and interactions between hydrogen sulfide, methane, and DES components, highlighting the efficacy of the DES in facilitating the separation of hydrogen sulfide from methane through DFT calculations. The radial distribution function (RDF) and interaction energies, as determined by traditional all-atom MD simulations, provide insights into the specificity and strength of the interactions between the DES components supported by graphene oxide and hydrogen sulfide. Importantly, the stability of the DES structure supported by graphene oxide is maintained after mixing with the fuel, ensuring its robustness and suitability for prolonged desulfurization processes, as evidenced by traditional all-atom MD simulation results. These findings offer crucial insights into the molecular-level mechanisms underlying the desulfurization of natural gas, guiding the design and optimization of task-specific DESs supported by graphene oxide for sustainable and efficient natural gas purification.

Abstract:An innovative strategy for sustainable SO2 capture and conversion in novel imidazole-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) is demonstrated in this work. These DESs exhibit an extremely high SO2 loading capacity (up to 1.39 g g(-1)) and excellent reversibility (15 recycles). The absorbed SO2 can be rapidly converted in situ to sulphur (up to 99% conversion) in the presence of H2S at room temperature without any additives.

Abstract:A series of acidic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) EMIES/nC9H10O2(n=0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4) were synthesized by simply heating the mixture of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate (EMIES) and 3-phenylpropionic acid (C9H10O2). The structure of EMIES/nC9H10O2 was determined by FTIR, 1H NMR and TGA characterization. The extraction-oxidation desulfurization system was developed to remove sulfides from model oil using EMIES/nC9H10O2 as the extractant and catalyst, H2O2 as the oxidation. The influences of raw material ratio, reaction temperature, O/S ratio, amount of DESs and different sulfide on the desulfurization performance were investigated. The experimental results demonstrated the optimal reaction conditions were molar ratio of EMIES to C9H10O2 of 1∶1, temperature of 50℃, O/S ratio of 8, the amount of DESs of 1.5 g and 5 ml model oil. Removal rate of DBT, 4, 6-DMDBT and BT reached 94.8%, 91.6% and 46.4%, respectively, under the optimal condition. The DESs can be reused for 6 times without significant decrease in activity. In addition, the desulfurization mechanism of the oxidation-extraction desulfurization system was discussed.

Abstract:Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a known pollutant that must be captured from gas streams. Dry desulfurization processes are investigated due to their lower energy requirement and potentially high capture efficiency. Carbon materials and metal oxides have been shown to have an affinity with SO2. The aim of this study was to combine iron oxide and graphene oxide (GO) as a composite material for SO2 capture for low-concentration streams. Iron oxide particles were prepared using a polyol method in which the precursor was dispersed in ethylene glycol, heated under reflux and then deposited on GO, a two-dimensional, single-layer material with a surface area of 400 m2/g. The synthesized material was tested for continuous desulfurization in a flow-through capture system with a stream of gas containing 25 ppm SO2 entering at 20 °C and 100 °C. Under all conditions tested, the breakthrough times, evaluated when the SO2 started to be detected at the outlet with a concentration of 1 ppm, as well as the capture capacities, were significantly higher for the iron oxide GO composite than for the pristine GO alone. The presence of sulfur compounds as well as the composite composition were confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The breakthrough experiment results at various temperatures also suggest that the capture was not governed only by pure physical adsorption with the presence of iron oxide. Addition of iron oxide particles positively influences SO2 affinity with the synthesized material as shown by the increase in breakthrough time and capture capacity.

Abstract:Sulfur-reduced graphene oxide composite (SGC) materials with uniformly dispersed sulfur on reduced graphene oxide sheets have been prepared by a simple aqueous one-pot synthesis method, in which the formation of the composite is achieved through the simultaneous oxidation of sulfide and reduction of graphene oxide. The synthesis process has been tracked ex situ by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, which both confirm that the majority of graphene oxide has been reduced during the synthesis reaction. The sulfur contents in the SGC, determined by thermogravimetry and elementary analysis, have been adjusted in the range from 20.9 to 72.5 wt.%. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) images reveal that most of the sulfur is uniformly dispersed on the reduced graphene oxide sheets, for which no sulfur in particulate form could be observed. The SGC materials have been tested as the cathode of rechargeable lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, and demonstrated a high reversible capacity and good cycleability. The SGC-63.6%S can deliver a reversible capacity as high as 804 mA·h/g after 80 cycles of charge/discharge at a current density of 312 mA/g (ca. 0.186 C), and 440 mA·h/g after 500 cycles at 1250 mA/g (ca. 0.75 C).

Abstract:Sulfur oxides are air pollutants derived mainly from the combustion of gasoline. Reducing the sulfur content of fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) gasoline is of key importance for the prevention and control of atmospheric pollution. We describe herein the fabrication and characterization of a porous, three-dimensional (3D) graphene oxide-supported zinc oxide (GO/ZnO) scaffold as an adsorbent for desulfurization with various model compounds and real FCC gasoline. The uniform and stable dispersion of ZnO nanoparticles on the surface of GO facilitates the specific binding of sulfides. Moreover, GO synergistically adsorbs aryl sulfides via [Formula: see text]–[Formula: see text] stacking interactions. The GO/ZnO nanosheets were further self-assembled into a 3D porous scaffold that effectively trapped sulfides and inhibited desorption. These scaffolds exhibited excellent desulfurization performance with maximum sulfur capacity up to 29.73[Formula: see text]mg S/g. This work provides a novel perspective on the fabrication of high-efficiency adsorbents for gasoline pretreatment.

Abstract:Tin sulfide-graphene nanocomposites have been synthesized through a facile one-pot solvothermal route. The as-prepared composites are characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis and elemental analysis. The results indicate that tin sulfide nanoparticles are homogeneously anchored on the surface of graphene. The electrochemical performance of tin sulfide-graphene composites is evaluated by galvanostatic charge-discharge tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Results show that the composites exhibit enhanced reversible lithium storage properties with high reversible capacity and good cyclic performance. The method presented in this work may provide a facile and economic strategy for the preparation of metal sulfide-graphene composites. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
