Abstract:Leather manufacturing generates a large amount of leather solid waste, among which the effective treatment of leather waste scraps rich in protein resources has always been a challenge for the tanning industry. In this paper, a green and convenient method was devised for the first time to prepare protein retarding material (PRM) for gypsum from chrome-free tanned leather waste. Aldehyde tanned leather scraps as the main chrome-free leather waste were directly hydrolyzed through high-pressure hydrothermal treatment without any chemicals to obtain PRM. Compared with chemical treatment (acid or alkaline hydrolysis), high-pressure hydrothermal method avoided the decrease of protein product purity due to without the help of acid and alkali. The results showed that PRM obtained from leather waste had a significant effect on prolonging the initial setting time and delaying the release of hydration heat of gypsum. With the dosage or molecular weight of PRM increased, this retarding effect on gypsum was more remarkable. SEM, XRD, and FTIR analysis indicated that the presence of PRMs inhibited the hydration process of gypsum hemihydrate to gypsum dihydrate. Through polypeptide-calcium chelation, PRMs could bind free Ca2+ ions dissolved from gypsum to delay them from participating in the hydration reaction. The larger molecular weight or the more dosage of PRM, the stronger ability to bind calcium ions in gypsum. Chemical structure characterization and molecular dynamics simulation of PRM-Ca chelate further proved that PRMs mainly through carboxyl groups on molecular chain combined with Ca2+ in gypsum system to inhibit hydration reaction, thereby fulfilling the retardation demand. This study indicated that PRM from leather scraps can be a promising candidate for gypsum retardation, which provides a path for the efficient utilization of leather waste.

Abstract:Environmental friendly leather finishing agent based on polyurethane has attracted great attention in recent years.In this paper we reported the synthesis of polyurethane latex through pre-polymerization,chain extension,neutralization and emulsification using organic siloxane polymer as the modifier.The surface composition,surface hydrophilicity,and mechanical properties were investigated.The results indicated that the resultant latex could be stored up to one year.Furthermore,due to the introduction of organic siloxane blocks and the in situ crosslinking during the film formation,the coating was hydrophobic and showed excellent crocking fastness.
One-step approach to fabricating amphoteric polymer fatliquors for chrome-free tanned leather eco-manufacturing

Abstract:The leather manufacturing industry is increasingly embracing chrome-free tanning methods to promote environmental sustainability. However, the transition to chrome-free tanning systems presents a notable obstacle: the incompatibility of traditional anionic wet finishing materials with chrome-free tanned leather due to differences in surface electrical behavior. Herein, an amphoteric polymer, referred to P(AA-co-DMAEMA-co-DA), was synthesized through a simple one-step free radical copolymerization using acrylic acid (AA), dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), and dodecyl acrylate (DA). Notably, the isoelectric point of P(AA-co-DMAEMA-co-DA) is 7.7, which contributes to improving the leather's positive electric property and enhancing the binding between the amphoteric polymer fatliquors (APF) and collagen fiber. The APF achieves a remarkable absorption rate of 96.2% and a dyeing uptake rate of 94.3% for anionic dyes, resulting in a uniformly bright surface color of the dyed leather and further significantly reducing the dye usage. Overall, the comprehensive properties of APF align with the electrical origins of organic chrome-free tanning leather, exhibiting a pronounced fatliquoring effect while reducing the dye content in the waste liquor. This contribution holds promise for advancing chrome-free tanning technology toward greener environmental practices.

Abstract:High-performance chrome-free colored leather is an obstacle for the leather industry. Mineral sourced fulvic acid (MFA) is characterized by excellent water solubility and abundant functional groups, such as auxochrome carboxyl, phenolic hydroxyl and chromophore quinonyl. So MFA is commonly used as plant growth regulator and dyeing. In view of this, MFA was firstly extracted from low-value weathered coal, and then a novel chrome-free tanning agent (MFAA) with tanning-dyeing integration was prepared by the coordination of MFA with Al (III). Quantitative analysis showed that the contents of carboxyl and quinonyl in MFA were 9.88 mmol/g and 1.52 mmol/g, respectively. The coordination mechanism between MFA and Al (III) was analyzed by FTIR and XPS. The shrinkage temperature of leather tanned by MFAA was more than 90 °C. The tensile strength and elongation at break reached 33.9 MPa and 114.1 %, respectively, which were higher than those tanned by commercially available organic tanning agents. Meanwhile, the UV–Vis absorption spectrum analysis showed that the dyeing performance of MFAA was different under different coordination rate of MFA with Al (III), so a series of leathers with different colors from dark to brown can be produced on demand. Finally, the recycled MFA from tanning wastewater was applied in the cultivation of rice seeds. The results showed that it could promote the germination rate of seed and the growth of root and stem. Therefore, this research is expected to simultaneously reduce the pollution of Cr 6+ and organic dyes.

Abstract:This study aimed to pioneer the development of an innovative, eco-friendly, and chrome-free tanning agent, with a focus on promoting sustainable practices in ecological leather production. Two novel biomass-derived tanning agents, namely, β-TCD and β-GCD, were synthesized through a one-pot grafting process involving environmentally friendly epoxy monomers: triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC) and glycerol triglycidyl ether (GTE). Characterization through various analytical methods, including FTIR, 1H NMR, XPS, GPC, SEM, and TGA, confirmed the successful grafting of TGIC and GTE onto β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) backbones. The resulting β-TCD and β-GCD exhibited notable epoxide values of 0.349 and 0.388 mol/100 g, respectively, along with a broader molecular weight distribution of intermediates. These newly developed tanning agents, β-TCD and β-GCD, were then applied in depickling goatskin tanning experiments. Results indicated that the crust leather tanned with β-TCD and β-GCD displayed favorable thermal stability, with shrinkage temperatures reaching 84 and 82 °C, respectively. Moreover, the thickening rates of the leather exceeded 40%. The crust leathers tanned with β-TCD, and β-GCD demonstrated excellent physical and mechanical properties, as well as notable resistance to yellowing compared to conventional commercial chrome-free tanning agents like TWS and F-90. Overall, this research emphasizes the efficacy of natural cyclodextrin materials as potent and environmentally friendly alternatives to chromium-based tanning agents, showcasing their significant potential in advancing sustainable and cleaner practices in leather production.

Synthesis of Multi-Site Polyether Amine Triazine Derivative for Sustainable Leather Manufacturing

Abstract:In this work, a multi-site polyether amine triazine derivative (ET) was prepared via a one-step process and its structure was confirmed using FT-IR and 1H NMR analyses. Then, the ET was applied to the tanning process and the ET tanning approach optimized and evaluated. The result indicated that after tanning with 8% ET at pH 6 for 6 h, the shrinkage temperature of leather was 83.9°C and the thickness change rate was 97.5%. The XRD, DSC, TG, SEM and Zeta potential analyses demonstrated that ET could couple with the amino groups of the collagen side chains and breaking partial hydrogen bonds between fibers, brought significant improvement to the softness of leather without obvious damage to the high-level structure of collagen. Residual Cl- concentration in the wastewaterdecreased 42.1% in the tanning process compared to the conventional chrome tanning method. The emissions of COD and TDS in the tanning process reduced by 40.5% and 27.2%, respectively. It is conceivable that the ET tanning approach provides an improved approach to promote leather industry to develop sustainably.

Abstract:Development of eco-friendly chrome-free tanning agents is an inevitable way to realize the sustainable development of the leather manufacturing industry. A sustainable chrome-free leather processing based on polymer-layered double hydroxide (LDHs) supramolecules is reported in this work. P(MAA-IA)-LDH (P-LDH) and GEP(MAA-IA)-LDH (GEP-LDH) supramolecules are constructed by an ion exchange method using P(MAA-IA) (P) and GEP(MAA-IA) (GEP) as intercalators, strengthening the interface interaction between the supramolecules and collagen fibers by improving their dispersion in the resulting leather. Our results indicate that P and GEP enter the LDH interlayer and increase the interlayer distance of P-LDHs and GEP-LDHs from 0.783 nm of LDHs to 1.252 and 1.158 nm, respectively, resulting in an increase in the specific surface areas of P-LDHs and GEP-LDHs. Moreover, compared with LDHs, P-LDHs and GEP-LDHs can be more easily diffused into collagen fibers and uniformly bound onto collagen fiber strands and between the collagen fibrils. The hydrogen bond, ionic bond, and coordination bond formed among collagen with LDH supramolecules can stabilize the integral triple-helical conformation of collagen, giving the resulting leather enhanced thermal stability, porosity, mechanical properties, enzymatic resistance, and decreased swelling ratio. Meanwhile, the incorporation of LDH supramolecules can improve the flame retardancy and smoke suppression property of the resulting leather, and the peak heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release (THR), and smoke production rate (SPR) of GEP-LDH tanned leather decrease by 23.1, 45.1, and 55.5%, respectively, in comparison to those of the pickled pelt. The GEP-LDH tanned leather exhibits better multifunctional properties due to more uniform dispersion in collagen fibers. Moreover, the absorption rate of dyes (91.2%) and fatliquoring agents (85.7%) of GEP-LDH tanned leather is higher than that of F-90 and TWS, close to the traditional chromium tanning agents, and the GEP-LDH tanning system exhibits a better degradability in comparison with the F-90 and TWS tanning systems. This work provides insights for developing a sustainable chrome-free leather system for versatile eco-leather manufacture.

Abstract:Organic chrome-free tanning agents are an important part of the sustainable development in leather manufacturing industry. However, organic chrome-free tanning agents tanned leather have a low isoelectric point (pI < 5), which results in a low absorptivity of traditional anionic wet finishing materials; as a result, leather quality is poor, and tannery wastewater is difficult to treat. In addition, leather is easily eroded by bacteria and mold during its production, storage, and use, causing serious economic loss to enterprises and users. In this study, hexahydro-1,3,5-tris(hydroxyethyl)-s-triazine (HHTT), ethylene glycol glycidyl ether (EGDE), and collagen polypeptide (CP) were used as raw materials to prepare a wrench-like, antimicrobial, amphoteric, epoxy-terminated, organic chrome-free tanning agent (HHTT-EGDE-CP) with a pI of 5.21, and an epoxy value of 0.267 mol/100 g. HHTT-EHDE-CP can establish a stable covalent cross-linking with collagen fibers, thereby enhancing the physicochemical properties of leather, the absorptivity of anionic wet finishing materials, giving leather long-term and efficient antibacterial properties. Experimental results show, that the shrinkage temperature (78.8 °C) and the absorptivity of anionic fatliquors (93.1%) and dyes (97.5%) of HHTT-EGDE-CP-tanned leather surpassed those of leather tanned using commercial organic chrome-free tanning agents. Notably, the inhibition rates of HHTT-EGDE-CP-tanned leather against E. coli and S. aureus reached 99.93% and 99.99%, respectively. In addition, HHTT-EGDE-CP-tanned leather exhibited excellent inhibition against A. flavus and Asp. niger, with long-term and efficient antibacterial properties. This innovative technique offers new perspectives for designing and developing multifunctional green materials toward the sustainable development of industrial manufacturing.

Discarded enoki mushroom root-derived multifunctional chrome-free chitosan-based tanning agent for eco-leathers manufacturing: Tanning-dyeing, non-acid soaking, and non-basifying

Abstract:The aim of this study was to develop new discarded enoki mushroom root-derived multifunctional chrome-free chitosan-based tanning agents that can be used for eco-leather manufacturing. In this study, oligochitosan (OCS) was prepared from chitosan extracted from the enoki mushrooms and chemically modified using reactive dye R19 and epichlorohydrin (ECH) to prepare chromium-free tanning agent (OCS-R19-ECH) with both tanning and dyeing functions. FT-IR, XRD, and NMR (1H) confirmed the successful synthesis of the product. The molecular weight of OCS-R19-ECH is 6355 g/mol, with an average particle size of 1249.37 nm and an epoxy value of 0.276 mol/100 g. OCS-R19-ECH was used for tanning experiments on bated sheepskin, and the results showed that the leather tanned with OCS-R19-ECH not only exhibited excellent wet-heat stability (shrinkage temperature = 81 °C), but also superior dyeing uniformity, resistance to dry and wet abrasion, mechanical strength (tensile strength = 12.4 MPa, tear strength = 57.3 N/mm), and outstanding antimicrobial properties. Most importantly, compared with traditional tanning agents, OCS-R19-ECH has a higher pH (9.0), tanning-dyeing integration, non-acid soaking, and non-basifying can be achieved in leather making, which can greatly simplify the tanning processes. This new multifunctional chrome-free chitosan-based tanning agent facilitates high-value utilization of waste resources.

Abstract:Restrictions on heavy metals, especially chromium, have encouraged alternative tanning systems that can reduce environmental and human health risks from conventional chrome-based tanning. In this work, metal-free combination tanning was developed by using vegetable tannins and a triazine-based syntan containing active chlorine groups (SACC). Specifically, the relationship between leather performance (e.g., hydrothermal stability and organoleptic properties) and technical protocols (e.g., types and dose of tannins) was systematically established. The optimized protocol involving a unique procedure (i.e., 10% SACC pre-tanning, shaving, and 25% wattle tanning) endowed the leather with high shrinkage temperature (~ 92 °C) and met the Chinese standards for shoe upper leather (QB/T 1873-2010). Our method not only produces zero chrome-containing solid wastes, but also uses ~ 75% less tannin for leather manufacture. The excellent leather performance was ascribed to the synergistic effects, where SACC and wattle diffused into collagen fibrils and may bind to collagen via covalent, hydrogen and ionic bonding, locking the hierarchical structure of collagen from microfibrils to fiber bundles. Moreover, we summarized these findings and proposed a diffusion-binding-locking mechanism, providing new insights for current tanning theory. Together with the biodegradable spent tanning liquor, this approach will underpin the development of sustainable leather manufacture.
An approach on chromium discharge reduction: Effect and mechanism of ketone carboxylic acid as high exhaustion chrome tanning agent

Abstract:Chrome tanning agent is the most widely used tanning agent with the best performances of finished leather, but the traditional chrome tanning process poses severe challenges because of the serious chromium pollution, thus the upgrading of cleaner chrome tanning process is imminent. In order to reduce the residual chromium in wastewater and increase the utilization rate of chrome tanning agent, 4-acetyl-heptanediate (AHA), a high exhaustion chrome auxiliary, was developed and applied in chrome retanning process. The results showed that AHA chrome retanning processes (AHA-6 and AHA-4) significantly reduced the chromium content in wastewater by 48.14% and 47.57%, and increased the chromium content in leather by 102.14% and 82.43%. COD and TDS values decreased by 43.82% and 31.46% with AHA-4 method. The addition of AHA obviously reduced the chromium concentration of wastewater, improved the chromium absorption rate, and promoted the cleaner chrome retanning process, which satisfied with the overall requirements of modern sustainable leather industry. The formation of AHA and chromium (III) was discussed using Gaussian 16 program to explain the high exhaustion chrome tanning agent mechanism. The work will guide on design and preparation of new high exhaustion chromium tanning agents for clean leather production.

Abstract:The traditional wet-finishing process for leather manufacturing is complicated and uses numerous chemical additives, limiting the leather industry's development in the direction of energy saving and emission reduction. Integrated with the allegro promotion of chrome-free organic tanning system, amphoteric wet-finishing materials have shown great promise for settling the current issues such as low chemical absorption-rates. Herein, we developed a disruptive "three-in-one" strategy for ecological organic chrome-free leather manufacturing based on the on-demand multifunctional fluorescent amphoteric polymer (referred to as pADD-DMENA). As expected, pADD-DMENA exhibited satisfyingly integrated "three-in-one" origins including retanning, fatliquoring and dyeing properties. Compared to conventional anionic dyed leather, pADD-DMENA dyed leather had a uniformly bright yellow color surface and superior lightfastness, durability, and washability. Furthermore, its fluorescent ontology enabled the visual tracking of pADD-DMENA in crust leather and sewage, allowing for real-time monitoring of pADD-DMENA precise distribution. Notably, because of the "three-in-one" features, pADD-DMENA significantly shortened the conventional wet-finishing process, greatly reducing machining time and demonstrating better environmental conservation of wastewater. To summarize, the development of pADD-DMENA allows the traditional wet finishing process to be completed in one step, effectively simplifying the tanning process, reducing additive of various chemicals, and broadening the way for ecological leather manufacturing in a green direction with low energy consumption and less pollution.

Abstract:High-performance chrome-free leather production is currently one of the most concerning needs to warrant the sustainable development of the leather industry due to the serious chrome pollution. Driven by these research challenges, this work explores using biobased polymeric dyes (BPDs) based on dialdehyde starch and reactive small-molecule dye (reactive red 180, RD-180) as novel dyeing agents for leather tanned using a chrome-free, biomass-derived aldehyde tanning agent (BAT). FTIR, 1H NMR, XPS, and UV-visible spectrometry analyses indicated that a Schiff base structure was generated between the aldehyde group of dialdehyde starch (DST) and the amino group of RD-180, resulting in the successful load of RD-180 on DST to produce BPD. The BPD could first penetrate the BAT-tanned leather efficiently and then be deposited on the leather matrix, thus exhibiting a high uptake ratio. Compared with the crust leathers prepared using a conventional anionic dye (CAD), dyeing, and RD-180 dyeing, the BPD-dyed crust leather not only had better coloring uniformity and fastness but it also showed a higher tensile strength, elongation at break, and fullness. These data suggest that BPD has the potential to be used as a novel sustainable polymeric dye for the high-performance dyeing of organically tanned chrome-free leather, which is paramount to ensuring and promoting the sustainable development of the leather industry.

Abstract:Developing alternative tanning agents to avoid the potential environmental and human health risks from the conventional chrome tanning is essential for the leather industry. In this work, we prepared an eco-friendly biomass-based tanning agent dichlorotriazinyl chitooligosaccharide (DTCS) by modifying chitooligosaccharide (COS) with cyanuric chloride (CC) for chrome-free leather manufacture. The synthesis of such biomass-based tanning agent was systematically optimized to obtain the target product with high grafting degree of 67% and weight-average molecular weight (Mw) of 1465 g/mol. The non-pickling tanning procedure using DTCS was investigated, and the interactions between DTCS and collagen fibers were studied. Our results showed that the hydrothermal stability of the tanned leather was significantly increased, i.e., the shrinkage temperature (Ts) exceeding 82.0°C, and the mechanical properties were improved. Moreover, the organoleptic properties of leather (e.g., fullness, softness and grain tightness) exhibited obvious improvement. This research not only offers a reliable approach for cleaner leather manufacturing while addressing the underlying ecological pressure, but also highlights the emerging use of biomass materials in the leather industry.

However, the non-covalent binding nature and high consumption of polyphenols in the leather matrix have limited its potential for replacing chrome tannage. In this work, we developed a series of new polyphenol derivatives by selectively conjugating cyanuric chloride (CC) with phenolic group, and therefore introduced covalent binding moieties in polyphenol for the tanning process. Specifically, polyphenols with different molecular sizes, i.e., tannic acid (TA), ellagic acid (EA), and gallic acid (GA), were modified and evaluated in a comparative study. The obtained triazine-conjugated polyphenol derivatives (i.e., GACC, EACC, and TACC) exhibited appropriate molecular weight (460−1130 Da) and superior stability in the tanning bath (pH ∼8.0), which can effectively penetrate collagen networks. We further investigated the tanning performance of GACC, EACC, TACC, and a commercial triazine tanning agent (i.e., SACC). These polyphenol derivatives exhibited covalent and non-covalent synergistic interaction with collagen, endowing leather with excellent fiber dispersion and overall performance (i.e., thermal stability, organoleptic and physical properties). Of note, the tanning system effectively reduced the dosage of polyphenols and organic carbon emission and improved the biodegradability of wastewater. Together with these outstanding results, we envision that this work will pave the promising way for eco-leather manufacturing.

Abstract:<p>The potential environmental pollution of chrome tanned leather results in the development of ecological chromium-free leather tanning production in leather industry. However, with weakly positive charge, chromium-free tanned leather cannot strongly bind to anionic dyes, thus causing low quality of finished leather. Herein, p(DM-co-[DDVIM]Br)PS was synthesized by free radical polymerization method. The structure and properties of the targeted products were synthetically characterized. The results indicated that the use of p(DM-co-[DDVIM]Br)PS fatliquoring agent can not only make leather fibers become loose, but also improve the binding affinity between leather and anionic dye during the fatliquoring process. The fatliquoring agent adsorption rates and the dye absorption rate of the leather were as high as 99.26% and 99.01%, respectively; the fatliquoring and dye solutions were clear, so they can be used as clean materials in the fatliquoring process of chromium-free tanned leather. Leather treated with p(DM-co-[DDVIM]Br)PS fatliquoring agent had higher K/S value (12.80) and is softer than those treated with commercial fatliquoring agent. Consequently, this study can not only help improve the absorption rate of anionic wet finishing materials, but also reduce the pollution caused by chrome tanning agents, thus providing a new way for the cleaner production in leather industry.</p>

Abstract:The development of chrome-free tanning agents is of great significance for the green and sustainable improvement of the leather industry. Metal organic framework (MOFs) is a kind of nanomaterial with steady framework formed by the coordination of metal clusters with organic ligands, which gives it a natural self-masking structure. Herein, two kinds of bimetallic MOFs were obtained via post-synthesis modification and used in the tanning to produce leather with good hydrothermal stability. M n+ - replacing Zr-MOFs is denoted as Zr/M−MOFs (M n+ = Ti 4+ , Al 3+ ). Zr/M−MOFs were characterized by XRD, SEM, FT-IR, TG, XPS, and N 2 adsorption/desorption. The results indicate that M n+ - replacing provides more active site that can be combined with collagen fibers. Compared to the Zr-MOFs tanned leather (75.3 °C), the shrinkage temperature of Zr/M−MOFs tanned leather (79.9 °C) has been further improved. In addition, Zr/M−MOFs can also avoid the problems caused by traditional metal tanning, such as the worse washability of aluminum tanning. A new strategy to improve the tanning performance of MOFs-based tanning agents was provided. It gives a new approach to the development of chrome-free tanning agents.

Abstract:In the present investigation, a cleaner and eco-friendly method to leather tanning process based on a novel pre-tanning agent (Q16) has been developed. Q16 was synthesized by cyanuric chloride and p-aminobenzoic acid, then detected by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The combination tannage process of Q16 and chrome (Q16-Cr) was optimized. In comparison with combination tannage of F90- Cr and traditional chrome tanning methods, the physico-chemical characteristics including shrinkage temperature, mechanical properties and organoleptic properties of the tanned leather were analyzed, the micro-morphology of grain surface and cross section which reflect the dispersion and texture of fibre were evaluated. The distribution of chromium in the cross section was detected by Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDAX), and the chromium concentration was also determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry (AES-ICP). The results are shown that the Q16-Cr-tanned leather has better tanning performance even than chrome-tanned leather. The grain surface is smoother and the collagen fibres are well-dispersed. The Q16-Cr tanning method improves the absorption degree of chromium, and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is significantly reduced. Hence, this cleaner non-salt pickling method for less chrome tanning process encourages the sustainable development of leather industry and cleaner production.

Abstract:Eco-friendly keratin-based retanning agents have aroused widespread interest in leather manufacturing, because they recycle the biomass wastes for sustainable industry. However, the poor filling effect and binding strength of hydrolyzed keratin from bovine hair wastes limit its application for leather retanning. Here we reported a series of polyacrylate-modified keratin (PMK) retanning agents synthesized from vinyl monomers and bovine hairs via a surfactant-free and UV-initiated polymerization. The obtained spherical PMK retanning agents exhibited ideal characteristics, such as appropriate molecular weight (13–22 kDa) and particle size (86–110 nm), and good colloidal stability in the tanning bath (pH 5.5). We further validated these agents for retanning bovine shoe upper leather. Compared with FB (i.e., a commercial retanning agent), leather retanned with PMK 75 showed increased thickness (∼50%) and reduced Δ b * (∼80%), suggesting excellent filling properties and yellowing resistance. Moreover, the retanning agent afforded the products improved physical properties (e.g., tensile strength ∼17.3 N/mm 2 , tear strength ∼72.7 N/mm and elongation at break ∼75.4%) and sensory properties (e.g., compression thickness ∼0.25 mm and resilience thickness ∼0.21 mm). This work not only offered a robust method for preparing low-cost retanning agents in sustainable industry, but also provided more opportunities for recycling biomass-based wastes aiming to closed-loop economy.
