Abstract:Thermoresponsive linear polymers and their corresponding aggregates or nanogels typically show similar thermoresponsive profiles. In this study, the authors demonstrate reversible chemical switching between linear polymers and their cross-linked nanogels. The linear polymers exhibit sharp thermal transitions typical of common thermoresponsive polymers but the cross-linked nanogels exhibit linear thermal transitions over a relatively broad temperature range. The reversible switching between these two different polymer architectures with distinct thermoresponses represents a unique example of how the responsive properties of smart polymers can be significantly manipulated via polymer architecture engineering.
Effect of Molecular Conformation Changes on the Phase Behavior of Liquid Crystalline Polymers

Abstract:In the presence of denaturing solvent, solutions of polypeptide can be liquid crystalline at room temperature. They may undergo an anisotropic-isotropic transition at low temperatures where the intramolecular helix-coil transformation occurs. On the basis of Florys lattice model and Zimm-Bragg's notion for the helix-coil transition, a theory considering the above phenomenon has been proposed. In this work, such theory was further developed by replacing the axial ratio x with the Kuhn chain axial ratio x(k) which is temperature-dependent. The calculation results show that an improved agreement between the theory and the experimental data has been achieved, and an appreciable influence on the phase behavior from both chain rigidity and polymer-solvent interaction parameter X was found. Finally, the temperature effect on orientational parameter S was also studied. The information obtained through the investigation may find important applications, such as envisaging new routes for processing the rigid-flexible block copolymer with better mechanical properties, and helping to understand bioprocesses in the life phenomena.

Abstract:The thermoresponsive transition behavior of a diblock copolymer consisting of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether (mPEG) and poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) in aqueous solutions has been investigated. With a specific composition, the copolymer showed a unique tunable phase transition from no response in acidic media to a solubleinsoluble (S-I) transition in neutral media and an S-I-S transition in basic media either in the presence of salt or for salt-free solutions. The S-I-S transition can be tuned over a wide temperature range even to an S-I type transition just by adding salts. In addition, phase transitions can occur in both pure water and saline solution under practical conditions (3080 degrees C), which makes them suitable for a broad range of applications.
Asymmetry in Polymer-Solvent Interactions Yields Complex Thermoresponsive Behavior

Abstract:Thermoresponsive polymers hold both fundamental and technological importance, but the essential physics driving their intriguing behavior is not wholly understood. We introduce a lattice framework that incorporates elements of Flory-Huggins solution theory and the $q$-state Potts model to study the phase behavior of polymer solutions and single-chain conformational characteristics. Importantly, the framework does not employ any temperature- or composition-dependent parameters. With this minimal Flory-Huggins-Potts framework, we show that orientation-dependent interactions, specifically between monomer segments and solvent particles, are alone sufficient to observe upper critical solution temperatures, miscibility loops, and hourglass-shaped spinodal curves. Signatures of emergent phase behavior are found in single-chain Monte Carlo simulations, which display heating- and cooling-induced coil-globule transitions linked to energy fluctuations. The model also capably describes a range of experimental systems. This work provides new insights regarding the microscopic physics that underpin complex thermoresponsive behavior in polymers.

Temperature-Responsive Phase Transition of Polymer Vesicles: Real-Time Morphology Observation and Molecular Mechanism

Abstract:Novel thermosensitive polymer vesicles with controlled temperature-responsive phase transition at the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) varying from 8 to 81 degrees C were prepared via self-assembly of amphiphilic hyperbranched star copolymers having a hydrophobic hyperbranched poly[3-ethyl-3-(hydroxymethyl)oxetane] (HBPO) core and many hydrophilic polyethylene oxide (PEO) arms. Real-time optical microscopic observation revealed that the polymer vesicles have undergone sequential morphology changes including enrichment, aggregation, fusion, and vesicle-to-membrane transformation near the LCST. Molecular-level investigation indicates that the LCST transition results from the decreasing water solubility of the polymer vesicles with increasing temperature based on the partial dehydration of the PEO vesicle corona. On the basis of these results, a LCST transition mechanism, in view of the molecular configuration, balance of hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties, and the vesicle morphology transformations, was proposed. As far as we know, the work presented here is the first demonstration of thermosensitive vesicles based on PEO, and the finding may be useful to design the thermosensitive core-shell structures by introducing the PEO segments.

Abstract:Raman spectroscopy was applied to study the conformational changes of poly[di(alkyl) vinylterephthalate] (alkyl = n-butyl and sec-butyl). Spectral regions assigned to C–H, C–C and ester carbonyl stretching modes were utilized to provide information on the molecular motion, the relative content of trans and gauche conformers, and the specific interactions existed in the mesophase formation process of these novel thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers. Both the experimental results and the conformational analysis suggested that the aliphatic side groups do have a significant impact on the formation of stable liquid crystalline phase. Based on the van’t Hoff relation, the thermodynamic parameters in the phase transition of poly[di(n-butyl) vinylterephthalate] were estimated (ΔH = 5.52 kJ mol−1, ΔS = 14.02 J mol−1 K−1), which were much smaller than the typical values generally obtained in first-order phase transition. Based on generalized two-dimensional correlation Raman analysis, specific interaction among the phenyl-ring in the mesophase development process was elucidated.

Abstract:The influence of two thermoresponsive polymers, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PVCL), on the phase transition behavior of a thermoresponsive ionic liquid, tributylhexylphosphonium 3-sulfopropylmethacrylate ([P4,4,4,6][MC3S]), was investigated. An obvious distinction was observed in the LCSTs and morphologies of [P4,4,4,6][MC3S]-PNIPAM and [P4,4,4,6][MC3S]-PVCL aqueous solutions, indicating their large differences in dynamic transition processes. In general, PNIPAM can "break" the water structure of [P4,4,4,6][MC3S] to decrease the transition temperature, while PVCL can "make" the water structure to increase it. Surprisingly, [P4,4,4,6][MC3S] has an unusual over-hydration behavior before dehydration while PNIPAM experiences a two-step transition process in [P4,4,4,6][MC3S]-PNIPAM aqueous solution, which has never been reported so far. Further studies revealed that the formation of strong intra-/inter-molecular hydrogen bonds C[double bond, length as m-dash]OD-N in PNIPAM is the driving force for the LCST phenomenon of [P4,4,4,6][MC3S]-PNIPAM solution, while it is the [P4,4,4,6][MC3S] that dominates the phase separation of [P4,4,4,6][MC3S]-PVCL solution.

Abstract:Two thermotropic liquid crystalline polypeptides with different side chains,PDLG and AzoPDLG,were synthesized.Both of them have rigid-rod main chain,but PDLG has long alkyl side chains and AzoPDLG has side chains containing mesogenic azobenzene moieties and long spacers.The properties of these compounds were investigated by 1H NMR,DSC and POM.The thermotropic phase transition behaviors caused by the side chains with different chemical structures were also discussed.The results showed that PDLG could only form cholesteric phase before heat decomposition and that AzoPDLG formed smectic phase in the lower temperature region while occurred clearing point in the higher temperature region.

Abstract:We present a non-isothermal mesoscopic model for investigation of the phase transition dynamics of thermoresponsive polymers. Since this model conserves energy in the simulations, it is able to correctly capture not only the transient behavior of polymer precipitation from solvent, but also the energy variation associated with the phase transition process. Simulations provide dynamic details of the thermally induced phase transition and confirm two different mechanisms dominating the phase transition dynamics. A shift of endothermic peak with concentration is observed and the underlying mechanism is explored.

Abstract:The relaxation behavior of a thermotropic liquid-crystalline polymer (TLCP), LC-5000 from Unichika, Japan, was investigated by rheology and optical microscopy. The solid-nematic transition was shown by DSC and dynamic temperature ramp. The transitions of dynamic modulus with temperature correspond to the end of the melting process. The TLCP is composed of unmelted solid crystals and nematic liquid crystal during the melting process. Macroscopically, it changes from a viscoelastic solid to a viscoelastic liquid in this process, as verified by creep test and dynamic frequency sweep under different temperature. The relaxation spectra of the TLCP under different temperature were calculated from the dynamic modulus. The characteristic relaxation processes determined from the relaxation spectrum are consistent with the observation from polarized optical microscopy. During melting, in particular, the relaxation of deformed polydomains and chain orientation slows down due to the constraining effects of unmelted solid crystals. (c) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:The investigation of flexible organic crystals has garnered substantial attention as an emerging frontier of scientific exploration. Within this realm, we report a model involving a compound akin to phenylacetonitrile that unveils the existence of two distinct crystalline phases characterized by markedly contrasting mechanical properties. One crystalline phase displays remarkable flexibility while the other one possesses a predisposition toward brittleness, attributes that can be ascribed to the divergent structures of the respective crystalline forms. Furthermore, these crystals showcase temperature-dependent spectral variations, thereby ushering in fresh possibilities for conducting precise temperature measurements through the utilization of optical methodologies. Elaborate experiments conducted on the optical waveguide properties of this substance have effectively validated its capacity to translate fluctuations in temperature into dependable optical signals. This study serves as a compelling testament to the extraordinary resilience and sensitivity exhibited by these organic crystals while concurrently broadening their range of applicability as optical waveguides capable of enduring high temperatures.

Abstract:The morphology of two thermotropic polyesters with mesogenic units and flexible spacers along their backbones during isotropic and liquid crystallization transitions was studied by means of polarizing microscopy and small angle light scattering (SALS). These transition processes were found to be composed of the initiation of the new phase at local places of the old phase matrix and growth of the new phase domains. A change of Hv scattering patterns was observed in the transition temperature ranges and is explained by models proposed in previous papers as the result of heterogeneity of the mesophase systems.

Abstract:In this study, a controllable thermo-induced phase transition process was first observed in the aqueous solution of backbone-thermoresponsive hyperbranched polyethers. According to the variable temperature UV-visible spectrophotometry, the phase transition process was extremely slow as temperature was set around lower critical solution temperature (LCST). Fluorescence tests showed that this slow phase transition behavior was related to the gradual thermally-induced dehydration of hyperbranched polyethers. Based on this unique behavior, the dynamics of phase transition was conveniently investigated by the temperature-jump method. Results showed that the dynamics of phase transition can be described by single exponential functions, and the dynamic parameters depended on temperature. Dynamic laser scattering and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the hyperbranched polyether self-assembled into micelles below its LCST, while the temperature-dependent aggregation occurred and complex micelles with larger size formed above LCST. Furthermore, the gradual aggregation process was in accordance with the rate-limited colloidal aggregation mechanism. Our research can contribute to the clarification of the dynamics and mechanism of this typical gradual phase transition process of backbone-thermoresponsive hyperbranched polymers, as well as their self-assembly and aggregation mechanisms.

Abstract:A mesogen-jacketed liquid crystal polymer, poly {2,5-bis[(4'-hexyloxyphenyl) oxycarbonyl]styrene} (PHPCS) with number-averaged molecular weight of 1.28 x 10(5) and polydispersity of 1.48 was prepared via 2, 2, 6,6-tetramethyl-piperidinyloxy mediated free radical polymerization. The thermotropic behavior was studied by a combination of differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry, polarized optical microscope and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. PHPCS was not crystalline over the entire temperature region studied. On heating, PHPCS first became an isotropic melt at glass transition temperature (T-g) and then a mesophase at temperatures much higher than T-g. On subsequent cooling, the formed ordered phase disappeared above T-g Contrary to theoretical predictions and previous experimental observations, the transition from isotropic melt to liquid crystalline phase was an endothermic process and the order-disorder transition took place with concurrence of heat release.

Abstract:The kinetics of crystallization from the mesophase and liquid crystallization from an isotropic melt of fractions of an aromatic thermotropic polyester were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and depolarizing transmittance measurements. The isothermal process of these transitions can be described by the Avrami equation. The values of the exponent n are found to be ∼4 and ∼1 for crystallization and liquid-crystallization transitions, respectively. The temperature dependence of the crystallization rate from the mesophase is similar to that for small-molecule liquid crystals and also to that for conventional polymers obtained from an isotropic melt. Compared to crystallization, the liquid-crystallization rate shows a very weak temperature dependence. This implies that the surface free energy of mesophase domains is much less than that of crystallites, which may explain the experimental fact that liquid crystallization from an isotropic melt can proceed with high transformation rate at very small undercoolings, whereas crystallization only proceeds at very large undercoolings.
Transparency of Temperature-responsive Shape-memory Gels Tuned by a Competition Between Crystallization and Glass Transition

Abstract:Transparency is often an important property in the practical applications of temperature-responsive shape-memory gels. We investigated the mechanism of significant transparency improvement upon a change in two copolymer gels with their molar ratios between stearyl acrylate and N,N-dimethylacrylamide from 1:1 to 0.75:1. By means of Flash DSC measurement, we made the thermal analysis characterization of crystallization and glass transition in two copolymer gels and compared the results to the parallel experiments of corresponding homopolymers. The results showed that the slightly lower content of stearyl acrylate sequences suppresses crystallization in their side chains due to the chemical confinement of comonomers on copolymer crystallization; meanwhile it shifts up the glass transition temperature of the backbone N,N-dimethylacrylamide sequences. Eventually on cooling, crystallization gives its priority position to glass transition in copolymer gels, resulting in a higher transparency of the gel without losing the shape-memory performance. To confirm the chemical confinement, we further compared the isothermal crystallization kinetics of stearyl acrylate side chains in the copolymer gel to that of their homopolymer. Our observations facilitate the rational design of the temperature-responsive shape-memory gels for the transparency property.

Abstract:Inspired by the influence of chemical structure of end groups on the phase transition temperature of thermoresponsive polymers, we demonstrated a strategy to control the multi-responsiveness of polymer assemblies via subtle modification of end groups of thermoresponsive polymer segments and revealed its potential application for drug delivery. By developing polymer assemblies composed of poly(aliphatic ester) as the inner core and thermoresponsive polyphosphoester as the outer shell, we showed that end groups of thermoresponsive polyphosphoester segments controlled the surface property of assemblies and further determined the stimuli-responsive behavior. The phase-transition temperatures of the unmodified polymer assemblies are tightly controlled by their surface properties due to the hydrophilic to hydrophobic transitions of end groups in response to an environmental stimulus (e.g. pH or light irradiation). External control over these surface properties can by asserted by adjusting the chemical structure and composition of the terminal groups of the thermoresponsive polyphosphoesters.
