Abstract:The larger size of macromonomers compared to that of regular monomers brings new synthetic challenges and calls for an in-depth investigation on polymerization mechanisms. Herein, we demonstrate that topological effect can affect the kinetics and mechanisms of macromonomer polymerization significantly. Utilizing ring-opening metathesis polymerization as the model reaction, the chain end during macromonomer polymerization is linked to a brush segment that can hinder the addition of macromonomers. During the initiation step in which the brush segment is not formed, the initiation rate is found to be irrelevant to macromonomers' molecular weight. As the reaction proceeds, the brush segment forms adjacent to the polymerization center and hinders the propagation like a "wall", resulting in the molecular weight dependence of the propagation rate. By copolymerization with cis-cyclooctene, the propagation rate becomes molecular weight independent again. These results demonstrate the topological effect on macromonomer polymerization and reveal the mechanistic differences between the polymerization of regular monomers and macromonomers.
