Abstract:The resource utilization of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an important and promising topic in energy chemical engineering. The previous products developed in our group through H2S conversion are sulfur or mercaptan acids. Alternative way to convert H2S is still desirable. Herein, we developed a green and mild method to convert H2S into mercaptan alcohols by the addition reaction with epoxide mediated in tertiary amine-functionalized protic ionic liquids (PILs). Reaction kinetics, substrate scope, and regeneration experiment have all been explored. Almost quantitative conversion of substrates was realized with catalytic loading of PILs at 30 C. Water extraction was used to recycle the catalysts from the reaction system. It is believed that the excellent results, together with its operational simplicity and the ability to successively reuse the catalyst, make this new methodology environmentally benign and cost-effective. The generality of the H2S resource methodology gives it potential for application on an industrial scale.

Abstract:The resource utilization of hydrogen sulfide(H2S)is of great significance in natural gas chemical industry.Described herein have developed a novel method mediated in tertiary amine-functionalized ionic liquids(ILs)to convert H2S into mercaptan alcohols with enols.The effect ofILs,substrate scope,and regeneration experiments have been investigated.It is found that the conversion of 3-methyl-2-buten-1-ol by H2S can reach 52％with a 50％(mol)catalyst loading of bis(2-dimethylaminoethyl)ether methoxyacetate within 12 h at 90℃.The reaction mechanism was speculated based on theoretical calculation.Besides,a plausible reaction-separation-integrated strategy was further proposed.This work reveals an effective insight into the capture and catalytic conversion of H2S to high valuable mercaptan alcohol,which makes the utiliza-tion method of H2S resource universal and has the potentiality for industrial application.

Abstract:The capture and conversion of H2S is of importance towards long-standing economic and environmental challenge. Hence, a series of task-specific ionic liquids were developed and presented as both absorbents and catalysts for simultaneous capture and conversion of H2S into high valuable mercaptan acids using unsaturated acids as starting materials. Good to quantitative conversion was realized with catalytic loading of ILs. Water extraction was employed to separate the product from the reaction system. The kinetic isotherm demonstrated that the addition reaction can achieve 98% conversion at 90 degrees C and 50 mol% of catalyst loading within 1 h. A plausible reaction-separation-integration strategy was further proposed. This work discloses a green, simple, and mild but effective method for the capture and catalytic conversion of H2S into high valuable mercaptan acids.

Herein, a brand-new strategy of H2S conversion by α,β-unsaturated carboxylate esters into thiols or thioethers using task-specific carboxylate ionic liquids (ILs) as catalyst has been developed, firstly accomplishing the phase separation of product and catalyst without introducing the third component. It can be considered as a cascade reaction in which the product selectivity can be controlled by adjusting the molar ratio of H2S to α,β-unsaturated carboxylate esters. Also, the effects of ILs with different anions and cations, intermittent feeding operations, as well as pressure−time kinetic behaviors on cascade reaction were investigated. Furthermore, the proposed interaction mechanism of H2S conversion using butyl acrylate catalyzed by [Emim][Ac] was revealed by DFT-based theoretical calculation. The approach enables the self−phase separation promotion of catalyst and product and achieves 99% quantitative conversion under mild conditions in the absence of solvent, making the entire process ecologically benign. High-efficiency reaction activity can still be maintained after ten cycles of the catalyst. Therefore, the good results, combined with its simplicity of operation and the high recyclability of the catalyst, make this green method environmentally friendly and cost−effective. It is anticipated that this self-separation method mediated by task-specific ILs will provide a feasible strategy for H2S utilization, which will guide its application on an industrial scale.

Efficient Conversion of Methane to Aromatics in the Presence of Methanol at Low Temperature

Abstract:The efficient utilization of methane has long been extremely challenging, especially at relatively mild conditions. We present a novel approach to convert methane to benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) efficiently on Zn/ZSM-5 catalyst in the presence of methanol at relatively mild reaction conditions (the range of temperature is 400-500 degrees C and molar ratio (n(CH3OH)/n(CH4)) of 0.4-1.2), which is in the preferred reaction condition for the methanol to aromatics process (MTA). The methane conversion reaches 14.8% and the BTX selectivity is increased by 9.3% using the co-reaction of methane with methanol, which is systematically studied using AAS, XRD, NH3-TPD, and N-2 adsorption and desorption. Our results show that the presence of strong acid sites, loaded Zn metals, and methanol in the feedstock are indispensable conditions for methane transformation at low temperature. The incorporation of methane carbon into the aromatics is directly evidenced by the C-13 NMR spectroscopy. In addition, the kinetic experiments show that the presence of methanol significantly reduces the activation barrier for methane conversion. Therefore, our approach to efficiently convert CH4 into aromatics at low temperature and improve BTX selectivity in MTA reactions potentially facilitates the industrialization of MTA.
Preparation of Ni/SiO 2 catalyst in ionic liquids for hydrogenation

Abstract:A series of silica supported nickel catalysts were prepared from nickel nitrate and tetraethyl orthosilicate by the sol-gel method with the imidazolium type ionic liquids as solvents. The catalysts were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Their catalytic performances for the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde to hydrocinnamaldehyde were investigated. Abstract:Tri-methylammonium-butane sulfonate (TMBSA) ionic liquid (IL) catalyzed efficiently acetylation of acetic anhydride with various alcohols, hydroxyesters and phenols, under solvent-free conditions was described as a novel method. [TMBSA][HSO 4 ] ionic liquid (1.0 mol%) is able to promote quantitative acetylation at low temperature, in high conversion and selectivity (≥95%). The process is highly effective, environmentally benign, and very selective. Furthermore, [TMBSA][HSO 4 ] ionic liquid was conveniently separated with the products and easily recycled to catalyze acetylation reaction again with excellent yields.

Abstract:Described herein presents a kind of multisite hybrid ionic liquid-catalysts and establishes a novel strategy for H2S utilization, which has been characterized by multiaspects to reveal internal structural characterization. Through chemical modification, the D101-based hybrid ILs were used for the direct synthesis of thioamides from the addition of H2S and nitriles. D101-[PMDETA][DMG] can achieve an impressive activity of quantitative conversion for benzonitrile. Reaction kinetics, adsorption thermodynamics, substrate universality, and catalyst cycling experiments have been systematically studied. A first-order kinetic model was constructed and studied experimentally for the reaction of nitriles with H2S to produce thioamides. The internal mechanism was proposed through experiments and confirmed by DFT-based theoretical calculations. Moreover, D101-based hybrid ILs can be easily recovered, thus completing the cyclic process of thioamide multiplication. This work not only offers an effective method for the construction of organic-inorganic hybrid materials but also provides a novel insight into efficient H2S conversion.
The ionic liquid-mediated Claus reaction: a highly efficient capture and conversion of hydrogen sulfide

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) were demonstrated to be highly efficient media for the liquid-phase Claus reaction. The reaction of H2S with SO2 in ILs proceeds very fast and almost completely to result in solid sulfur (S8) under mild conditions without the addition of any catalysts. Various ILs with different cations and anions were investigated and a simple IL 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([hmim][Cl]) was found to be the most effective for the capture and conversion of H2S. It enables the transformation of H2S to S8 with a conversion ratio as high as >96% within 3 min. This finding opens up a promising method for the capture and conversion of H2S from gas streams.

Abstract:Three kinds of aqueous multiple Lewis base functionalized protic ionic liquids (MLB-PILs) solutions are designed for highly efficient absorption of H2S. These MLB-PILs are tethered with tertiary amine groups on their cations and acetate as anions.H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR spectra, their physical properties (e.g. densities and viscosities) and thermal properties are carefully characterized. Impressively, the viscosities of MLB-PILs are <25 cP at ambient temperature, which is obviously lower than other ILs reported in literature. The H2S solubility of MLB-PILs are superior compared with other reported H2S absorbents, which can reach 0.65-1.92 mol.mol(-1) at 1 bar and 313.2 K. With the assumption of complex formation between H2S and MLB-PILs, the reaction equilibrium thermodynamic model (RETM) is adopted to correlate the experimental solubility. Basing on the fitting results, the thermodynamic parameters such as Henry's law constants H and reaction equilibrium constants K are obtained. Furthermore, the enthalpy change Delta H-SOL and the entropy change Delta S-SOL, are also calculated to analyze the absorption process of H2S in these MLB-PILs. Abstract:Developing absorbents with both high absorption capacity of H2S and large selectivity of H2S/CO2 is very important for natural gas sweetening process. To this end, a class of novel hydrophobic protic ionic liquids (ILs) containing free tertiary amine group as functional site for the absorption of H2S were designed in this work. They were facilely synthesized through a simple neutralization-metathesis methodology by utilizing diamine compounds and bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide as the building blocks for cation and anion, respectively. Impressively, the solubility of H2S can reach 0.546 mol mol(-1) (1 bar) and 0.225 mol mol(-1) (0.1 bar), and the selectivity of H2S/CO2 can reach 37.2 (H2S solubility at 1 bar vs. CO2 solubility at 1 bar) and 15.4 (H2S solubility at 0.1 bar vs. CO2 solubility at 1 bar) in the hydrophobic protic ILs at 298.2 K. Comparing the hydrophobic protic ILs with other absorbents justifies their superior performance in the selective absorption of H2S from CO2. Abstract:Selective separation of CO2 and H2S from CH4 is of importance to the natural gas upgrading because of its cor-rosivity.As is well known,amine group can recognize reversibly CO2 and H2S with a moderate interaction.With this in mind,this work prepared a series of amine-functionalized supported-protic-ionic-liquid membranes(SPILMs)for the selective separation of CO2 and H2S from CH4.For comparison,aprotic ionic liquid membrane was also prepared for natural gas sweetening.The effect of temperature and transmembrane pressure difference on the permeability of single gas and ideal selectivity of CO2/CH4 and H2S/CO2 were studied.Facilitated transport mechanism was studied by NMR spectra.The permeability of CO2 in primary amine functionalized[DMPDAH][Tf2N]-based membrane decreases with the increasing transmembrane pressure,indicating a typical feature of facilitated transport membrane.The permeability of CO2 and the ideal selective of CO2/CH4 are as high as 2000 barrers and 53.2 at 313.2 K in[DMPDAH][Tf2N]membrane,significantly higher than those in conventional ILs membrane.It is anticipated that these amine-functionalized SPILMs can provide alternative insight for the se-lective separation of CO2 and H2S from CH4.
A Novel Strategy for Conversion of Methanol and Co2 into Dimethoxymethane in A Basic Ionic Liquid

Abstract:The reaction of methanol with CO2 to obtain dimethoxymethane (DMM) at 150 degrees C and initial pressure of 3.0 MPa CO2 was realized in the presence of basic functionalized ionic liquid BmimOH. Although the conversion of methanol was low (2.4%), CO2 as a soft oxidant was firstly introduced for selective oxidation of methanol into DMM. The effect of the functionalized group composed of ionic liquids on the reactivity and selectivity was explored and the activation and reaction mechanism of the ionic liquid for methanol and CO2 was proposed. In addition, the reaction thermodynamics of methanol and CO2 was discussed by calculating the thermodynamic functions of the reaction in order to explore the direction and limitation of the reaction. Highly Selective Absorption Separation of H2S and CO2 from CH4 by Novel Azole‐based Protic Ionic Liquids

Abstract:Recently, the selective removal of H2S and CO2 has been highly desired in natural gas sweetening. Herein, four novel azole-based protic ionic liquids (PILs) were designed and prepared through one-step neutralization reaction. The solubility of H2S (0-1.0 bar), CO2 (0-1.0 bar), and CH4 (0-5.0 bar) was systematically measured at temperatures from 298.2 to 333.2 K. NMR and theoretical calculation were used to investigate the reaction mechanism between these PILs and H2S. Reaction equilibrium thermodynamic model (RETM) was screened to correlate the H2S solubility. Impressively, 1,5-diazabicyclo[4,3,0] non-5-ene 1,2,4-1H-imidazolide ([DBNH][1,2,4-triaz]) shows the highest H2S solubility (1.4 mol/mol or 7.3 mol/kg at 298.2 K and 1.0 bar) and superior H2S/CH4 (831) and CO2/CH4 (199) selectivities compared with literature results. Considering the excellent absorption capacity of H2S, high H2S/CH4, and CO2/CH4 selectivity, acceptable reversibility, as well as facile preparation process, it is believed that azole-based PILs provide an attractive alternative in natural gas upgrading process.

Abstract:Selective capture of H2S from gas mixture is essential to reduce its undesirable high corrosiveness and toxicity. Ionic liquids have been proposed as a promising material, and there is a need to clarify the capture mechanisms and search for optimal combination of cation and anion for application. This work aims to elucidate the interactions between H2S and nonfluorous imidazolium ionic liquids (NIILs) at a molecular level. The effects of hydroxyl group on the tail of alkyl chain, and combinations of imidazolium cations and nonfluorous anions on H2S capture are explored using quantum chemistry calculations. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulations are used to explore the microstructural features of NIIL–H2S–CH4 mixture systems. It is found that the hydroxyl groups in the cations is essential in governing the absorption properties of NIILs, including the interaction sites for hydrogen bonding, interaction geometries and energies, diffusion coefficients, and organization of H2S and CH4 around cations and anions. Abstract:Chemical transformations are highly sensitive toward changes in the solvation environment and solvents have long been used to control their outcome. Reactions display unique performance in solvents like ionic liquids or DMSO, however, isolating products from them is cumbersome and energy-consuming. Here, we develop promising alternatives by constructing solvent moieties into porous materials, which in turn serve as platforms for introducing catalytic species. Due to the high density of the solvent moieties, these porous solid solvents (PSSs) retain solvation ability, which greatly influences the performance of incorporated active sites via concerted non-covalent substrate-catalyst interactions. As a proof-of-concept, the -SO3H-incorporated PSSs exhibit high yields of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural in THF, which exceeds the best results reported using readily separable solvents and even rivals those in ionic liquids or DMSO. Given the wide application, our strategy provides a step forward towards sustainable synthesis by eliminating the concerns with separation unfriendly solvents.
High conversion of H2S to H2 and S via a robust microwave-induced discharge plasma

Abstract:Direct conversion of H2S could achieve the co-production of hydrogen and sulfur, avoiding hydrogen waste in the traditional Claus process. Herein, we propose a robust SiC-mediated microwave-induced discharge plasma, achieving H2S conversion of 98.8% to H2 and S with the inlet H2S of 2% (volume concentration) at 600 W. We realize efficient excitation and stable maintenance of microwave plasma in the multimode cavity via optimizing large SiC particles at the waveguide port. In addition, the introduction of tungsten sheets enhances discharge plasma. The H2S conversion of 52.8% was realized for the high inlet H2S concentration (30%) at 600 W. In-situ optical emission spectroscopy reveals that atomic S and H are the key reactive intermediates in the overall H2S decomposition. Direct electron-H2S collision coupling excited Ar atom-H2S collision contributes to H2S direct conversion. This work paves a path to hydrogen production toward sustainable energy applications from the direct conversion and utilization of H2S.
