Denitrification of 15N Labeled Nitrate-N in Rice Field Soil under Different Redox Conditions

Abstract:Oxidization-reduction status is one of the important factors affecting denitrification in soil. With the incubation experiment of 15N-labeled nitrate-N denitrification under different redox conditions and the direct measurement of the gaseous 15N losses, the redox condition for occurrence of denitrification was studied, so that direct basis could be provid- ed for the future explanation of N loss from nitrification-denitrification in rice field soil. The resresults indicate indicate that the denitrification of nitrate-N can take place under reduction and oxidation conditions. The 15N-nitrate losses directl measured during 4 weeks incubation period are 60.23 + 8.04 % under oxidation condition (Eh7 290-330 mV ) and 83.89 + 4.79 % under reduction condition (Eh7-114-42mV). However, under oxidation condition the rate of denitrification is evidently lowered with the half time of added nitrate-N prolonged, showing the inhibition of soluble O2 on the denitrifi- cation. The decrease of 15N abundance of source in the Process of nitrate-N denitrification under oxidation condition indicated that nitrification-denitrification of the ammonium- N from the soill occurred. The results from modeling studies on the Processes of denitrification show that the rate constant and corresponding half bine as the indexes of soil denitrification potential are probably better than the traditional method with the percentage of denitrification as index. With the combination of the direct determination with the 15N tracer-mass spectrometry technique and the modeling method, denitrification in soil and other environmental systems could be more suitably evaluated.
Contributions of Nitrification and Denitrification to N2o Emissions from Aged Refuse Bioreactor at Different Feeding Loads of Ammonia Substrates

Abstract:Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a strong greenhouse gas, and its emissions from microbial nitrification (NF) and denitrification (DNF) are a threat to the environment. In the present study, a combined approach consisting of 15N stable isotope and molecular biology (qPCR) was used to determine the contributions of autotrophic nitrification (ANF), heterotrophic nitrification (HNF), and DNF to N2O emissions in laboratory incubations of aged refuse for different ammonia (NH4+-N) loads (200, 400, and 800mg·NH4+-N/kg·aged refuse) and incubation times (2-144h). Experimental results showed that the N2O emissions increased with the increase in applied amount of NH4+-N substrates. Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) were demonstrated to be present in the incubations of aged refuse. The results of 15N stable isotope labelling experiment indicated that NF (54.60%-68.8%) and DNF (83.38%-85.90%) contributed to majority of N2O emissions in the incubations of 24h and 72h, respectively. The results of functional genes (amoA and nosZ) quantification experiments indicated that the high gene copies of amoA and nosZ were present at 24h and 72h, respectively. The study also demonstrated the utility of a combined stable isotope and molecular biology approach. The approaches not only provide similar inferences about the N2O emissions, but also enable the determination of relative contributions of ANF, HNF, and DNF to N2O emissions. The results of the study are important in providing guidance to artificially optimize the operating conditions for alleviating N2O emissions in aged refuse bioreactors.
Characterizing the Importance of Denitrification for N2O Production in Soils Using Natural Abundance and Isotopic Labeling Techniques

Abstract:Nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas that contributes significantly to climate change, is emitted mostly from soils by a suite of microbial metabolic pathways that are nontrivial to identify, and subsequently, to manage. Using either natural abundance or enriched stable isotope methods has aided in identifying microbial sources of N2O, but each approach has limitations. Here, we conducted a novel pairing of natural abundance and enriched assays on two dissimilar soils, hypothesizing this pairing would better constrain microbial sources of N2O. We incubated paired natural abundance and enriched soils from a corn agroecosystem and a subalpine forest in the laboratory at 10%–95% soil saturation for 28 hr. The natural abundance method measured intramolecular site preference (SP) from emitted N2O, whereas the enriched method measured emitted 15N2O from soils amended with 15N‐labeled substrate. The isotopic composition of emitted N2O was measured using a laser‐based N2O isotopic analyzer, yielding two key findings. First, both methods revealed that denitrification was the primary source of N2O in all soils: isotopic enrichment revealed clear NO3− $\mathrm{N}{{\mathrm{O}}_{3}}^{-}$ reduction to N2O, while SP indicated a likely combination of fungal and bacterial denitrification. Second, we quantified, to our knowledge for the first time, persistent (>55%) β‐position‐specific enrichment in N2O emitted from 15 NO3− $\mathrm{N}{{\mathrm{O}}_{3}}^{-}$ ‐amended soils. This counter‐intuitive enrichment pattern could be indicative of codenitrification, an understudied but potentially important contributor to N2O emissions. Our work revealed the ubiquity of denitrification among the soils tested. Future pairings of natural abundance and enriched methods could better characterize diverse denitrification pathways.

Abstract:Reducing nitrous oxide (N2O) emission from farmland is crucial for alleviating global warming since agriculture is an important contributor of atmospheric N2O. Returning biochar to agricultural fields is an important measure to mitigate soil N2O emissions. Accurately quantifying the effect of biochar on the process of N2O production and its driving factors is critical for achieving N2O emission mitigation. Recently, stable isotope techniques such as isotope labeling, natural abundance, and site preference (SP) value, have been widely used to distinguish N2O production pathways. However, the different isotope methods have certain limitations in distinguishing N2O production in biochar-amended soils where it is difficult to identify the relative contribution of individual pathways for N2O production. This paper systematically reviews the pathways of soil N2O production (nitrification, nitrifier denitrification, bacterial denitrification, fungal denitrification, coupled nitrification-denitrification, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium and abiotic processes) and their response mechanism to the addition of biochar, as well as the development history and advantages of isotopes in differentiating N2O production pathways in biochar-amended soils. Moreover, the limitations of current research methods and future research directions are proposed. These results will help resolve how biochar affects different processes that lead to soil N2O generation and provide a scientific basis for sustainable agricultural carbon sequestration and the fulfilment of carbon neutrality goals.

Abstract:A 56-day aerobic incubation experiment was performed with 15-nitrogen (N) tracer techniques after application of wheat straw to investigate nitrate-N (NO3-N) immobilization in a typical intensively managed calcareous Fluvaquent soil. The dynamics of concentration and isotopic abundance of soil N pools and nitrous oxide (N2O) emission were determined. As the amount of straw increased, the concentration and isotopic abundance of total soil organic N and newly formed labeled particulate organic matter (POM-N) increased while NO3-N decreased. When (NO3)-N-15-N was applied combined with a large amount of straw at 5000mg carbon (C) kg(-1) only 1.1 +/- 0.4 mg kg(-1) NO3-N remained on day 56. The soil microbial biomass N (SMBN) concentration and newly formed labeled SMBN increased significantly (P < 0.05) with increasing amount of straw. Total N2O-N emissions were at levels of only micrograms kg(-1) soil. The results indicate that application of straw can promote the immobilization of excessive nitrate with little emission of N2O.

Abstract:The last step of denitrification, i.e. the reduction of N2O to N-2, has been intensively studied in the laboratory to understand the denitrification process, predict nitrogen fertiliser losses, and to establish mitigation strategies for N2O. However, assessing N-2 production via denitrification at large spatial scales is still not possible due to lack of reliable quantitative approaches. Here, we present a novel numerical "mapping approach" model using the delta N-15(sp)/delta O-18 slope that has been proposed to potentially be used to indirectly quantify N2O reduction to N-2 at field or larger spatial scales. We evaluate the model using data obtained from seven independent soil incubation studies conducted under a He-O-2 atmosphere. Furthermore, we analyse the contribution of different parameters to the uncertainty of the model. The model performance strongly differed between studies and incubation conditions. Re-evaluation of the previous data set demonstrated that using soils-specific instead of default endmember values could largely improve model performance. Since the uncertainty of modelled N2O reduction was relatively high, further improvements to estimate model parameters to obtain more precise estimations remain an on-going matter, e.g. by determination of soil-specific isotope fractionation factors and isotopocule endmember values of N2O production processes using controlled laboratory incubations. The applicability of the mapping approach model is promising with an increasing availability of real-time and field based analysis of N2O isotope signatures.

Abstract:Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas. In North China, vegetable fields are amended with high levels of N fertilizer and irrigation water, which causes massive N2O flux. The aim of this study was to determine the contribution of microbial processes to N2O production and characterize isotopic signature effects on N2O source partitioning. We conducted a microcosm study that combined naturally abundant isotopologues and gas inhibitor techniques to analyze N2O flux and its isotopomer signatures [δ15Nbulk, δ18O, and SP (intramolecular 15N site preference)] that emitted from vegetable soil after the addition of NH4+ fertilizers. The results show that ammonia oxidation is the predominant process under high water content (70% water-filled pore space), and nitrifier denitrification contribution increases with increasing N content. δ15Nbulk and δ18O of N2O may not provide information about microbial processes due to great shifts in precursor signatures and atom exchange, especially for soil treated with NH4+ fertilizer. SP and associated two end-member mixing model are useful to distinguish N2O source and contribution. Further work is needed to explore isotopomer signature stability to improve N2O microbial process identification.

Isotopic assessment of soil N2O emission from a sub-tropical agricultural soil under varying N-inputs

Abstract:Nitrogen fertilizers result in high crop productivity but also enhance the emission of N2O, an environmentally harmful greenhouse gas. Only approximately a half of the applied nitrogen is utilized by crops and the rest is either vaporized, leached, or lost as NO, N2O and N2 via soil microbial activity. Thus, improving the nitrogen use efficiency of cropping systems has become a global concern. Factors such as types and rates of fertilizer application, soil texture, moisture level, pH, and microbial activity/diversity play important roles in N2O production. Here, we report the results of N2O production from a set of chamber experiments on an acidic sandy-loam agricultural soil under varying levels of an inorganic N-fertilizer, urea. Stable isotope technique was employed to determine the effect of increasing N-fertilizer levels on N2O emissions and identify the microbial processes involved in fertilizer N-transformation that give rise to N2O. We monitored the isotopic changes in both substrate (ammonium and nitrate) and the product N2O during the entire course of the incubation experiments. Peak N2O emissions of 122 ± 98 μg N2O-N m-2 h-1, 338 ± 49 μg N2O-N m-2 h-1 and 739 ± 296 μg N2O-N m-2 h-1 were observed for urea application rate of 40, 80, and 120 μg N g-1. The duration of emissions also increased with urea levels. The concentration and isotopic compositions of the substrates and product showed time-bound variation. Combining the observations of isotopic effects in δ15N, δ18O, and 15N site preference, we inferred co-occurrence of several microbial N2O production pathways with nitrification and/or fungal denitrification as the dominant processes responsible for N2O emissions. Besides this, dominant signatures of bacterial denitrification were observed in a second N2O emission pulse in intermediate urea-N levels. Signature of N2O consumption by reduction could be traced during declining emissions in treatment with high urea level.
Effects of long-term amendment of organic manure and nitrogen fertilizer on nitrous oxide emission in a sandy loam soil

Abstract:To understand the effects of long-term amendment of organic manure and N fertilizer on N2O emission in the North China Plain, a laboratory incubation at different temperatures and soil moistures were carried out using soils treated with organic manure (OM), half organic manure plus half fertilizer N (HOM), fertilizer NPK (NPK), fertilizer NP (NP), fertilizer NK (NK), fertilizer PK (NK) and control (CK) since 1989. Cumulative N2O emission in OM soil during the 17 d incubation period was slightly higher than in NPK soil under optimum nitrification conditions (25 degrees C and 60% water-filled pore space, WFPS), but more than twice under the optimum denitrification conditions (35 degrees C and 90% WFPS). N2O produced by denitrification was 2.1-2.3 times greater than that by nitrification in OM and HOM soils, but only 1.5 times greater in NPK and NP soils. These results implied that the long-term amendment of organic manure could significantly increase the N2O emission via denitrification in OM soil as compared to NPK soil. This is quite different from field measurement between OM soil and NPK soil. Substantial inhibition of the formation of anaerobic environment for denitrification in field might result in no marked difference in N2O emission between OM and NPK soils. This is due in part to more rapid oxygen diffusion in coarse textured soils than consumption by aerobic microbes until WFPS was 75% and to low easily decomposed organic C of organic manure. This finding suggested that addition of organic manure in the tested sandy loam might be a good management option since it seldom caused a burst of N2O emission but sequestered atmospheric C and maintained efficiently applied N in soil.
Understanding the Relative Contributions of Fungi and Bacteria Led Nitrous Oxide Emissions in an Acidic Soil Amended with Industrial Waste

Abstract:Amendment of fertilized arable soil with alkaline industrial waste has the potential to ameliorate soil acidifi-cation whilst also improving crop yield. Another co-benefit is nitrous oxide (N2O) emission abatement but the contribution of fungi and bacteria involved in this process remains unclear. Two incubation experiments were conducted to: 1) examine how amendment of acidic soils with a mixture of phosphorus tailings mixture and insoluble potassium-containing rocks (PT) affect N2O emissions and 2) understand the microbial mechanisms and relative contributions of fungi and bacteria responsible for N2O emissions. In the first incubation experiment, the four treatments consisted of: i) the study control, ii) urea, iii) PT amendment and iv) PT amendment plus urea. Results showed that the PT amendment significantly increased soil pH from 4.8 to above 6.0, and reduced N2O emissions by 65.7%. PT-amended soils had higher N2 emissions and faster O2 consumption. The PT amendment significantly increased extracellular enzyme activities of leucine aminopeptidase and N-Acetyl-8-glucosaminidase, while it significantly decreased activities of 8-1, 4-glucosidase and 8-cellobiosidase. Two antibiotics (cycloheximide and streptomycin) combined with substrate-induced respiration method were used in the second incubation experiment. Compared to soil with urea, urea with PT amendment raised soil bacteria -related N2O from 9.2% to 18.8% while decreasing fungi-related N2O from 50.5% to 43.2%. These findings suggest that the N2O emissions from acidic soils can be considerably mitigated by the application of alkaline industrial wastes. The contribution of fungi should be considered when designing and applying N2O mitigation strategies in acidic soils.Data Availability: Data will be made available on request.
Swine Manure Reduces Nitrous Oxide Emissions from Acidic Red Soil Due to Mineral N Immobilization and Alleviated Acidification

Abstract:Swine manure is widely used for ameliorating red soil acidification, but little information is available about its effect on N2O emissions. To explore the effects, a 35-day incubation experiment was conducted with two soils under different fertilization history: chemical fertilizers only (F) and combination of chemical fertilizers with swine manure (M). The treatments included no fertilizer (control), 100% N from urea (M0), and urea plus swine manure, which supplied 20% (M20), 40% (M40), 60% (M60), and 100% (M100) of total N. Soil N2O emission rates, pH, exchangeable acidity, mineral N species, dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen, microbial biomass carbon, and their inner relationships were examined. The N2O emission rates markedly increased following the treatments, reached peaks before day 2, and thereafter decreased sharply to the level of the control by day 25, 25, 23, 15, and 9 in F soil and by day 25, 25, 23, 19, and 11 in M soil for M0, M20, M40, M60, and M100 treatments, respectively. As swine manure application rate increased, the cumulative N2O emissions of F soil decreased significantly, while, for M soil, there was no significant difference among M0, M20, M40, and M60 treatments, which were higher than the M100 treatment. At the end of incubation, soil pH in F and M soils followed the order M0 < M20 < M40 < M60 < control < M100 and vice versa for exchangeable Al3+ and acidity. F soil had relatively higher NH4+-N concentration in M0 treatment and higher NO3−-N concentrations in M0 and M20 treatments than M soil. Soil pH and NH4+-N had the greatest relative contribution to N2O emissions. Overall, this study indicates that partial chemical N replacement by swine manure could effectively mitigate N2O emissions from acidic red soil primarily because of mineral N immobilization and alleviated red soil acidification. Thus, swine manure has the potential to co-ameliorate red soil acidification and N2O emission. Further research is needed to determine the effect of swine manure on N2O emission reductions under field conditions and the overall benefit in effective N management.

Abstract:The emission of nitrous oxide (N 2 O) from agricultural soils to the atmosphere is a significant contributor to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. The recycling of organic nitrogen (N) in manure and crop residues may result in spatiotemporal variability of N 2 O production and soil efflux which is difficult to capture by process-based models. We propose a multi-species, reactive transport model to provide detailed insight into the spatiotemporal variability of nitrogen (N) transformations around such N 2 O hotspots, which consists of kinetic reactions of soil respiration, nitrification, nitrifier denitrification, and denitrification represented by a system of coupled partial differential equations. The model was tested with results from an incubation experiment at two different soil moisture levels (-30 and -100 hPa, respectively) and was shown to reasonably well reproduce the recorded N 2 O and dinitrogen (N 2 ) emissions, and the dynamics of important carbon (C) and N components in soil. The simulation indicated that the four populations developed in closely connected, but separate layers, with denitrifying bacteria growing within the manure-dominated zone and nitrifying bacteria in the well-aerated soil outside the manure zone and with time also within the manure layer. The modeled N 2 O production within the manure zone was greatly enhanced by the combined effect of oxygen deficit, abundant carbon source and supply of nitrogenous substrates. In the wetter soil treatment with a water potential of -30 hPa, diffusive flux of nitrate (NO 3 -) across the manure-soil interface was the main source of NO 3 - for denitrification in the manure zone, while at a soil water potential of -100 hPa, diffusion became less dominant and overtaken by the co-occurrence of nitrification and denitrification in the manure zone. Scenarios were analyzed where diffusive transport of dissolved organic carbon or different mineral N species were switched off, and they showed that the simultaneous diffusion of NO 3 -, ammonium (NH4+), and nitrite (NO 2 -) were crucial to simulate the dynamics of N transformations and N 2 O emissions in the model. Without considering solute diffusion in process-based N 2 O models, the rapid turnover of C and N associated with organic hotspots can not be accounted for, and it may result in underestimation of N 2 O emissions from soil after manure application. The model and its parameters allow for new detailed insights into the interactions between transport and microbial transformations associated with N 2 O emissions in heterogeneous soil environments.

Partial Substitution of Manure Increases N2O Emissions in the Alkaline Soil but Not Acidic Soils

Abstract:The fertilization regimes of combining manure with synthetic fertilizer are benefits for crop yields and soil fertility in cropping systems as compared to sole synthetic fertilization, but the responses of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions to these practices are inconsistent in the literatures. We hypothesized that it is caused by different proportions of nitrogen (N) applied as manure and various soil properties. Here, we conducted a microcosm experiment, and measured the N2O emissions from control (no N) and five manure substitution treatments (supplied 100 mg N kg(-1) using the combination of urea with manure) with a range of proportions of N applied as manure (0, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) in three different soil types (fluvo-aquic soil, black soil, and latosol) under aerobic condition. The stimulated effect on N2O emissions was more pronounced after manure application in an alkaline soil with high nitrification rate, due to relatively rapid soil DOC depletion and N mineralization of manure. N2O emissions from partial substitution of urea with manure were significantly higher than manure-only addition under high soil pH due to abundant labile C from manure. However, there was no difference between manure substitution treatments under acid soils. Nitrification inhibitor substantially decreased N2O emissions with increasing soil pH, but it was less effective in mitigating N2O emissions with larger proportion of manure. This is likely due to the slow nitrification under low soil pH, and denitrification derived N2O increased with increasing manure application rate. Collectively, our study shows that the application of manure substitution to alkaline soils requires careful consideration, which might have rapid nitrification potential and hence trigger significant N2O emissions. The knowledge gained in this work will help the decision-makers in optimizing a sound N fertilization regime interacted with soil properties for sustainable crop production and N2O mitigation.

Abstract:Biogenic nitrous oxide (N 2 O) from nitrification and denitrification in agricultural soils is a major source of N 2 O in the atmosphere, and its flux changes significantly with soil moisture condition. However, the quantitative relationship between N 2 O production from different pathways (i.e., nitrification vs. denitrification) and soil moisture content remains elusive, limiting our ability of predicting future agricultural N 2 O emissions under changing environment. This study quantified N 2 O production rates from nitrification and denitrification under various soil moisture conditions using laboratory incubation combined with literature synthesis. 15 N labeling approach was used to differentiate the N 2 O production from nitrification and denitrification under eight different soil moisture contents ranging from 40 to 120% water-filled pore space (WFPS) in the laboratory study, while 80 groups of data from 17 studies across global agricultural soils were collected in the literature synthesis. Results showed that as soil moisture increased, N 2 O production rates of nitrification and denitrification first increased and then decreased, with the peak rates occurring between 80 and 95% WFPS. By contrast, the dominant N 2 O production pathway switched from nitrification to denitrification between 60 and 70% WFPS. Furthermore, the synthetic data elucidated that moisture content was the major driver controlling the relative contributions of nitrification and denitrification to N 2 O production, while NH 4 + and NO 3 − concentrations mainly determined the N 2 O production rates from each pathway. The moisture treatments with broad contents and narrow gradient were required to capture the comprehensive response of soil N 2 O production rate to moisture change, and the response is essential for accurately predicting N 2 O emission from agricultural soils under climate change scenarios.

Abstract:Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions occur as a consequence of the turnover of soil nitrogen (N), but gross N transformations and N 2 O production are often not studied in combination, so the relationships are poorly understood. Here, we quantified gross N transformations and the N 2 O production pathway of alkaline fluvo-aquic soils under different fertilization regimes collected from a long-term field experiment in the North China Plain and compared them with six acidic UK soils (one was alkaline for reference) with high soil organic carbon (SOC). We found that nitrification was the dominant N 2 O production pathway in the alkaline Chinese soil with a contribution of nitrification to N 2 O emissions (N 2 O nit ) of 81%. By contrast, denitrification was the main N 2 O production pathway for the acidic UK soils with the contribution of denitrification to N 2 O emissions (N 2 O den ) of 66%. Long-term manure applications significantly increased N 2 O den , compared to the synthetic N and no N treatments (25% vs. 18%). The N 2 O nit was positively correlated with gross autotrophic nitrification rates and pH but negatively correlated with gross N mineralization, SOC, soil total N content, and C:N ratios. Our findings highlight the importance of soil pH in controlling the N 2 O production in cropland soils, and suggest that the increased contribution of denitrification to N 2 O emissions should be considered, when increasing SOC through long-term manure and straw management for carbon sequestration and soil fertility improvement.

Abstract:The flux of nitrous oxide (N2O) from the soil to the atmosphere is an important contributor to the global greenhouse effect. Spatial variation in the distribution of factors that drive N2O producing processes often creates hotspots within soil that are difficult to quantify and model, and this is particularly the case after manure amendment. In the stagnant soil matrix, solute diffusion is crucial in supplying the nitrate (NO3-)to nearby zones, i.e., hotspots, to maintain a locally high NO3- reduction. To provide detailed insight into the spatiotemporal variability of nitrogen (N) transformations around N2O hotspots, we propose a multi-species, reactive transport model containing kinetic reactions of soil respiration, nitrification, nitrifier denitrification, and denitrification, built on a system of partial differential equations. The model was used to simulate the amount of N2O, dinitrogen (N2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted from a 10 cm soil profile with time, and concentration profiles of crucial intermediates. The measured N2O and N2 fluxes correlate well with the model simulations, with a simulated stratification of growing nitrifying and denitrify activities in and around the manure hotspot which is consistent with previous incubation experiments. N2O evolution was sensitive to the initial setup of oxygen (O2) availability, and anaerobic condition was maintained in the saturated manure zone throughout the simulation period, demonstrating the necessity of simulating the heterogeneity within soil in N2O models. Simulation experiments will be conducted to assess the effects of solute diffusion on N transformations. We anticipate that diffusive NO3- transport to be crucial to facilitate the coupled nitrification-denitrification around the manure zone. Neglecting such a process in process models may make it difficult to reflect the rapid turnover of nitrogen pool around organic hotspots and underestimate N2O emissions. The model and its parameters allows for new detailed insight into N2O formation processes in heterogeneous environments.

Abstract:Manure is a key source of N for crops, especially in organic farming systems, but also a driver of N 2 O emissions from soil. Treatment technologies removing manure organic matter affect soil N 2 O emissions, but the direction and magnitude of these effects remain uncertain. We explored the effects of four fertilizer materials derived from cattle manure on soil N 2 O emissions. Treatments included: untreated cattle manure (CA), cattle manure co-digested with grass-clover silage (DD); a liquid fraction (LF) produced by mechanical separation of digestate; and a concentrated fertilizer with NH 4 + -N and sulfate (NS) produced from stripped H 2 S and NH 3 . These fertilizers were surface-applied to a sandy loam (Foulum) and a clay loam soil (Askov) at 55% water-filled pore space (WFPS) in 28-day laboratory experiments with monitoring of CO 2 and N 2 O. Samples were sectioned during or after incubation to describe mineral N and microbial dynamics. Although the WFPS in both soils was 58–61%, N 2 O emissions varied greatly, and this was explained by differences in water potential, and in the relative gas diffusivity which was approx. 0.011 and 0.030 in Foulum and Askov soil, respectively. Unexpectedly, treatment LF with the lowest manure organic matter input had the highest N 2 O emissions. Denitrification was the main pathway producing N 2 O as determined by 15 N enrichment of soil NO 3 − . The vertical distribution of mineral N and microbial activities, and PLFA, indicated that N 2 O emissions from the organic fertilizers depended on their interaction with the soil, as modified by soil water potential and gas diffusivity at the time of application.
