Abstract:The Jiangchuan Biota from the Jiucheng Member（Mb.） of the Dengying Formation（Fm.）, discovered in Jiangchuan, eastern Yunnan, China, is marked by copious macrofossils at the apex of the Ediacaran strata. This fauna features benthic algae with varied holdfasts and other fossils of indeterminate taxonomic affinity and is compositionally unique compared to the Shibantan and Gaojiashan biotas of the Dengying Fm. and the Miaohe and Wenghui biotas of the Doushantuo Fm., elsewhere in China. One novel benthic saccular macroalgal fossil, named here Houjiashania yuxiensis gen. and sp. nov., from the Jiangchuan Biota is based on fossils that are sausage-shaped, elongate, tubular, ranging from 0.3 to 4 cm in length, and up to 0.8 cm in diameter. One terminus is blunt and rounded to an obtuse angle, the other is bent with a spread-out surface resembling a holdfast, suggesting a three-dimensional thallus. Thin, stipe-shaped outgrowths, likely vestiges of sessile saccular life forms, are prevalent in macroalgal fossils of analogous size and shape, as well as present brown algae Scytosiphonaceae, such as Colpomenia and Dactylosiphon. The new findings augment the diversity of benthic algae, such as those known from the Early Neoproterozoic Longfengshan Biota in North China. The benthic algal macrofossils in the Jiucheng Mb. add to knowledge of Late Ediacaran metaphyte diversification and offer more clues about the evolutionary positioning of primitive macroalgae. The co-occurrence of numerous planktonic and benthic multicellular algae and planktonic microbes might have facilitated ecologically the more extensive later Cambrian explosion evidenced by the Chengjiang Biota in Yunnan.

Abstract:Much palaeontology research on biomineralization has been directed to studying the Cambrian radiation of biomineralizing animals. The evolutionary radiation of biomineralization in the Cambrian Period was preceded by weakly biomineralized animals in the late Ediacaran period around 550-539 Ma. Here we report many new tubular fossils from the upper part of the Ediacaran Dengying Formation in Lijiagou section, Ningqiang area, southern Shaanxi Province, China, consisting of two new genera and species, namely Shufangtubulus inornatus n. gen. n. sp., and Palaeorhopalon spiniferum n. gen. n. sp. The newly discovered materials expand the list of the Ediacaran tubular fossils. The borings first found on the outer surface of Sinotubulites baimatuoensis are similar to those of Cloudina , which may reveal the earliest predator-prey dynamics. The small and delicate drill holes detected on the inner walls of Sinotubulites baimatuoensis are inferred to be infested traces by parasitism.

Problematic Macrofossils from Ediacaran Successions in the North China and Chaidam Blocks: Implications for Their Evolutionary Roots and Biostratigraphic Significance

Abstract:Upper Neoproterozoic successions in the North China and nearby Chaidam blocks are poorly documented. North China successions typically consist of a diamictite unit overlain by siltstone, sandstone, or slate. Similar successions occur in Chaidam, although a cap carbonate lies atop the diamictite unit. The diamictites in both blocks have been variously interpreted as Cryogenian, Ediacaran, or Cambrian glacial deposits. In this paper, we describe problematic macrofossils collected from slate of the upper Zhengmuguan Formation in North China and sandstone of the Zhoujieshan Formation in Chaidam; both fossiliferous formations conformably overlie the aforementioned diamictites. Some of these fossils were previously interpreted as animal traces. Our study recognizes four genera and five species-Helanoichnus helanensis Yang in Yang and Zheng, 1985, Palaeopascichnus minimus n. sp., Palaeopascichnus meuiscatus n. sp., Horodyskia mondiformis? Yochelson and Fedonkin, 2000, and Shaanxilithes cf. ningqiangensis Xing et al., 1984. None of these taxa can be interpreted as animal traces. Instead, they are problematic body fossils of unresolved phylogenetic affinities. The fundamental bodyplan similarity between Horodyskia and Palaeopascichnus, both with serially repeated elements, indicates a possible phylogenetic relationship. Thus, at least some Ediacaran organisms may have a deep root because Horodyskia also occurs in Mesoproterozoic successions.Among the four genera reported here, Palaeopascichnus Palij, 1976 and Shaanxilithes Xing et al., 1984 have been known elsewhere in upper Ediacaran successions, including the Dengying Formation (551-542 Ma) in South China. If these two genera have biostratigraphic significance, the fossiliferous units in North China and Chaidam may be upper Ediacaran as well. Thus, the underlying diamictites in North China and Chaidam cannot be of Cambrian age, although their correlation with Ediacaran and Cryogenian glaciations remains unclear. As no other Neoproterozoic diamictite intervals are known in North China and Chaidam, perhaps only one Neoproterozoic glaciation is recorded in that area.
A microfossil assemblage from the Ediacaran Doushantuo Formation in the Shennongjia area (Hubei Province, South China): Filling critical paleoenvironmental and biostratigraphic gaps

Abstract:Microfossils of the Ediacaran Doushantuo Formation in South China provide an important window onto the rapid diversification of marine eukaryotes after the terminal Cryogenian global glaciation. They also offer key data in the biostratigraphic subdivision and correlation of the lower–middle Ediacaran System. Previously published Doushantuo microfossils in South China were mostly from intra-shelf facies in the Yangtze Gorges area, shelf margin facies in the Weng'an area, and upper slope facies in the Zhangjiajie area, whereas paleontological data from shallow-water inner shelf facies have been rarely documented. In addition, previous data from South China leave a "barren zone" associated with the negative δ 13 C carb excursion EN2 that impedes biostratigraphic correlation. To address these environmental and stratigraphic gaps, we conducted an integrated chemostratigraphic and biostratigraphic analysis of the Doushantuo Formation at the inner shelf Lianhuacun section in the eastern Shennongjia area of Hubei Provence, South China. The Lianhuacun fossils are preserved in chert nodules/bands of the lower Doushantuo Formation, precisely in a chemostratigraphic interval identified as EN2, indicating that the so-called "barren zone" is likely a taphonomic artifact. A total of 33 genera and 82 species are identified, including a new genus ( Duospinosphaera gen. nov.) and seven new species ( Duospinosphaera shennongjiaensis sp. nov., D. biformis sp. nov., Jixiania retorta sp. nov., Mengeosphaera mamma sp. nov., Sinosphaera exilis sp. nov., Tanarium columnatum sp. nov., and Weissiella concentrica sp. nov.). The Lianhuacun acanthomorphic acritarchs can be broadly assigned to the third microfossil assemblage zone (i.e., the Tanarium conoideum – Cavaspina basiconica Assemblage Zone) recognized on the basis of the Weng'an biota that is correlated with upper Member II of Doushantuo Formation in the Yangtze Gorges area, consistent with chemostratigraphic correlation between the Shennongjia and Yangtze Gorges areas. Thus, the so-called "barren zone" may be a poorly preserved part of the third microfossil assemblage zone. Alternatively, it may represent a new and yet unnamed microfossil assemblage zone between the third and the overlying Tanarium pycnacanthum – Ceratosphaeridium glaberosum Assemblage Zone. Regardless, the new data presented here fill important gaps in the geographical, paleoenvironmental, and stratigraphic distributions of Ediacaran acanthomorphic acritarchs in South China. As such, they facilitate integrative chemostratigraphic and biostratigraphic correlation of Ediacaran strata at regional and global scales.

Abstract:Ediacaran(635-542,Ma) is the important geological period between the last global glaciation(Marinoan) and the Cambrian "explosion of life". As a result of the tremendous changes of Neoproterozoic climate and environment,rapid evolution and diversity of many eukaryotic lives,including multicellular organisms arise to adapt significant radiation. The Sinian Doushantuo and Dengying Formations in South China and their coeval strata represent the deposition of this special geological time. The complete stratigraphic record,diverse depositional environments and abundant micro-and macrofossils make South China to be one of the ideal areas for further studies on the Ediacaran(Sinian) stratigraphic division and global correlation,and to explore the early origin and radiation of multicellular organisms of the areas of radiation. In particular,the more abundant macrofossils occurring in the Ediacaran(Sinian) strata in the Yangtze platform marginal facies,contain the more distinct assemblages with significant diversity. The recent researches indicate that the Sinian macrofossil assemblages in South China also include a couple of typical fossils of the Ediacaran Biota in Australia and the White Sea biota in Russian. We synthesize in this paper the previous researches in recent years on the Sinian lithofacies and Palaeogeography in South China;mainly displays some newly collections of the "Wenghui Biota" from Jiangkou,Guizhou and the "Jiangchuan Biota" from Jiangchuan,Yunnan;briefly describe the palaeogeographic locations and several Sinian macrofossil assemblages including "Miaohe Biota". And hereby we conclude that a variety of Sinian macrofossil assemblages in South China were living and buried in the transitional/slope zone of carbonate rocks and clastic rocks at the margin of the Yangtze platform,the characteristics of each macrofossil assemblage were constrained by its sedimentary microfacies and went on changes regularly. The macrofossil records suggest that in this period,accompanied by significant climatic and environmental changes,a series of important evolution events took place,many macroalgae and metazoan generally appeared a diverse developments and laid an ecological foundation for the huge Cambrian radiation of early animal;and in the southern China,a brand new neritic ecosystem had been formed,the dominant planktonic and benthic eukaryotic algae were very prosperous to be the marine primary producers,especially the abundant multicellular macroscopic algae might be main plants of hydrocarbon generation in the transitional period of Precambrian-Cambrian.
A new silicified microfossil assemblage from the Ediacaran Dengying Formation in South Shaanxi, China

Abstract:A silicified fossil assemblage is newly recovered from the acid-macerated residuals of the siliceous dolomite in the late Ediacaran upper Dengying Formation, Tudimiao Section, Ningqiang, southern Shaanxi Province, China. It consists of a large number of tubular and spheroidal fossils. Of them, Cloudina and Sinotubulites can be well identified by the remaining "cone-in-cone" structure or transverse corrugations and longitudinal ridge and multi-layered outer wall, and several other tubular fossils of unknown affinities can also be recognized. However, most of the tubular fossils are generally preserved as steinkerns lacking detailed surface ornamentation and are difficult to distinguish. Morphologically, spheroidal fossils are highly diversified, comprising one-cell to various aggregated ones including two-cell, three-cell, four-cell, five-cell, or other irregular morphotypes. Therefore, three different preservational styles in the weakly biomineralized organisms may be presented in this area, referring to three tubular fossil assemblages in the Gaojiashan biota, i.e. from the lower to upper, a pyritized Conotubus - Gaojiashania in the siltstone-mudstone and calcified Cloudina in the limestone at the mid-upper Gaojiashan Member, Dengying Formation in the Gaojiashan section and at upper Gaojiashan and lower Beiwan members, Dengying Formation in the Shengchangba section, a phosphatized Cloudina - Sinotubulites association in the lower Beiwan Member, Dengying Formation in the Lijiagou section, and a silicified tubular and spheroidal fossil association at the mid-upper Beiwan Member, Dengying Formation in the Tudimiao section. This finding thus may have some broad implications, it not only opens a new taphonomic window for the late Ediacaran weakly biominerlizing organisms, encourages us to explore more extensively the once neglected cherty dolomite, but also considerably expands the geographical range and species richness of the terminal Ediacaran biosphere. More importantly, the finding also indicates that Cloudina having a worldwide distribution in different paleoecologies and biofacies has the greatest advantage of being the stratigraphic marker for correlation with precision to different paleocontinents.

Abstract:The complex evolutionary history of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas, including the continental blocks (Indian, Lhasa, South Qiangtang, Tarim, Olongbuluk, Central Qilian, Alxa, North China, Yangtze, Central Iran and Oman) and the orogenic belts between them, has long been the frontier in Earth science research. The Cryogenian and Ediacaran strata are extensively distributed in these blocks. Specifically, relatively complete Cryogenian and Ediacaran successions have been discovered in Oman, Indian, Yangtze, and Tarim blocks, while only the Ediacaran successions have been reported in Iran, the South Qiangtang, Central Qilian, Alxa, and North China blocks. Based on previous studies together with the integration of new materials and advancement obtained through the Second Tibetan Plateau Scientific Expedition and Research, this review aims to synthesize a correlative stratigraphic framework of the representative Cryogenian and Ediacaran sequences from the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas. Furthermore, the Cryogenian and Ediacaran biotas and major geological events in these areas are comprehensively discussed in aspects of current research status. The results indicate that, in general, Ediacaran fossils of each area exhibit distinct features in preservation and assemblage composition, but the typical late Ediacaran fossils Cloudina and Shaanxilithes have been reported from most of these areas. In addition to the two global Cryogenian glaciations, late Ediacaran glaciogenic deposits are extensively recorded in the areas within and around the northern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (including the North China, Alxa, Central Qilian, Olongbuluk, and Tarim blocks, and the North Qilian Accretionary Belt), as well as central and southern Iran. However, further research is required to determine the age, distribution, and origin of these late Ediacaran glaciogenic deposits. Meanwhile, the middle Ediacaran DOUNCE/Shuram Excursion is widely documented in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas. The available data show that, after the break-up of the Rodinia supercontinent, most of the continental blocks in the areas were located along the northern margin of East Gondwana and a few (such as North China) were located between the Gondwana and Laurentia. In general, the paleogeographic evolution of most of these blocks during the Cryogenian and Ediacaran remains disputatious, necessitating further research to resolve the controversies surrounding their paleogeographic reconstruction models during this critical time interval.

Late Ediacaran to Early Cambrian stratigraphic correlation and its geological implications in the northwestern Sichuan Basin: insights from phosphorus, isotopes, and small shelly fossils

Abstract:The characteristics of elements, isotopes, and small shelly fossils were investigated for Late Ediacaran to Early Cambrian stratigraphy division and to discuss their geological implications in the northwestern Sichuan Basin. The results reveal that small shelly fossils can be detected in the high-phosphorous section, with the concentration of phosphorus mainly ranging from 2% to 8%, suggesting that this interval belongs to the Early Cambrian, which is also consistent with the carbon isotopic composition results. In addition, the Early Cambrian is denudated in the Sichuan Basin due to tectonic movement, and the characteristics of some isotopes and small shell fossils are different from those in other basins. It can be proposed that P content can support the recognition of lithological boundaries, and the high phosphorus content can be used as a reference to identify the top and bottom boundaries of the Maidiping Formation in the study area. According to the elemental compositions in the Ediacaran Dengying Formation, the variations in Si, Al, Fe, and K contents are similar in the platform area and rift area, suggesting that the third and fourth member of the Dengying Formation are also developed in the Deyang–Anyue Rift. The results suggest that both the Deng-4 member and Maidiping Formation feature contemporaneous deposition of different facies in the northwestern Sichuan Basin. The strata consist of shale intercalated with thin carbonate rock deposits in the Deyang–Anyue Rift, while carbonate rock deposits in the platform. The Deyang–Anyue Rift expanded gradually in the Late Ediacaran and eventually filled in the Early Cambrian. The data in this study illustrate that elemental compositions, isotopes, and small shelly fossils can be combined to correlate the Late Ediacaran to Early Cambrian strata and provide new evidence for Deyang–Anyue Rift evolution. The results offer some new insights for deep oil and gas exploration in the Sichuan Basin and for the tectonic–depositional–environmental–biological synergistic evolution in the Late Ediacaran to Early Cambrian transition.

New materials of acanthomorphic acritarchs from the Ediacaran Weng'an Biota (South China)

Abstract:The Weng'an Biota from the Ediacaran Doushantuo Formation in Guizhou Province, southwestern China, is known for its three-dimensionally phosphatized acritarchs, multicellular algae, and embryo-like animal fossils. Among these diverse microfossils, acanthomorphic acritarchs have played a significant role in the biostratigraphic subdivision and correlation of the lower-middle Ediacaran System. However, most previous studies on the biostratigraphy of the Doushantuo Formation in the Weng'an area have focused on large acanthomorphic acritarchs (LAAs, vesicle diameter >200 μm), whereas the smaller acanthomorphic acritarchs (SAAs, vesicle diameter 500 thin sections and discovered a large number of well-preserved, small (<100 μm) and medium-sized acanthomorphic acritarchs (MAAs, vesicle diameter ranging 100–200 μm). In total, we have identified SAAs in four genera and six species (Tanarium conoideum Kolosova, 1991, emend. Moczydłowska et al., 1993; Tanarium elegans Liu et al., 2014; Mengeosphaera membranifera Shang, Liu, and Moczydłowska, 2019; Mengeosphaera minima Liu et al., 2014; Estrella recta Liu and Moczydłowska, 2019; Variomargosphaeridium gracile Xiao et al., 2014), as well as two types of MAAs (Tanarium tuberosum Moczydłowska, Vidal, and Rudavskaya, 1993, emend. Moczydłowska, 2015; Weissiella cf. W. grandistella Vorob'eva, Sergeev, and Knoll, 2009, emend. Liu and Moczydłowska, 2019). This updated acritarch assemblage of the Weng'an Biota is valuable for correlating the Ediacaran Doushantuo Formation between the Weng'an and Yangtze Gorges areas. It also serves as a tool to test the proposed acritarch biozones in Ediacaran formations of South China and other localities, including Australia, Siberia, and the East European Platform.

Abstract:Two new horizons with macroscopic fossils are reported in the Doushantuo Formation, Ediacaran System, from the Yangtze Gorges area. The fossils were discovered in the lower and middle black shales of the Doushantuo Formation in the new section at Sandouping Town, Zigui County, Hubei Province. The new macroscopic assemblages include Chuaria and Tawuia , and occur below the well-known “Miaohe Biota”. These fossils indicate that after the Nantuo ice age, macroscopic multicellular organisms gradually increased in abundance and diversity. Simple, discoidal carbonaceous compressions such as chuarids are present in the initial macrofossil assemblage of the Doushantuo Stage. This assemblage was eventually replaceded by the more diverse Miaohe macrofossils, including unambiguously branching forms, in the uppermost Doushantuo Formation. The new discovery of carbonaceous compression macrofossils from the Doushantuo Formation in the Yangtze Gorges area provides new evidence for the correlation of late Neoproterozoic successions in southern China.
Progresses and Questions on Studying Metazoan Fossils of the Weng'an Biota

Abstract:The phosphatized biota of Ediacaran(Sinian) Doushantuo stage from Weng'an, Guizhou, which constitute an exceptionally well-preserved phosphatized Lagerstten of late Precambrian, consists of cyanobacteria, multicellular algae, acritarchs, rest eggs and embryos, questionable sponges, tubular animal and small bilaterian fossils. The phosphorites from Doushantuo Formation at Weng'an, which contain important fossils of life evolution from simple to complex during late Precambrian and represent life scenery of early Ediacaran biota, provide an important taphonomic window for us to understand the biosphere of late Precambrian. Recently, a great lot of new data of the questionable metazoan body fossils(including all types or similar types of reported metazoan fossils) were found from Doushantuo phosphorites at Weng'an, Guizhou. Conjunction with having been seen in SEM, furthermore, we imbedded a number of spheroidal and tubular fossils in epoxy resin and then thin sectioned them in controlled orientation. Based on the results of SEM and transmitted-light microscopy and the previous achievements in the study of the Weng'an biota, the research evolvement and perspective of Weng'an biota are introduced detailedly in this paper.
Protoconodont Fossils for Refining the Cambrian Bottom and the Contribution to Shale Gas Formation along the Southwest Margin of Yangtze Block

Abstract:ABSTRACT: It has been an intense debate on the exact boundary between Ediacaran and Cambrian in the southwest Yangtze Block. The calibration of this critical boundary has a remarkable influence on the further investigation of the break-up of the Rodinia Supercontinent, the early life evolution, and the mechanism of the phosphorite deposit. Ediacaran and Cambrian strata and fossils are widely distributed in Anning, Yunnan Province in China. In recent years, the Xiaowaitoushan Member from the Lower Yuhucun Formation has been studied. Through this interval with continuous collections, the first appearance datums (FADs) of the protoconodont (Fomitchella cf. inchoate Yang et He, Protohertzina cf. anabarica Missarzhevsky) and globular embryos fossil (Olivooides sp.) earlier than these in the Lower Cambrian strata of the Meishucun Formation were discovered. This discovery indicates that the Xiaowaitoushan Member has included more FADs than the previously discovered single FAD of Anabarites primitivus Qian et Jiang, and the Ediacaran–Cambrian boundary in southwest China should be replaced below the Point “A” of the Meishucun Formation in Yunnan Province. The Point “B” of the Meishucun Formation is younger than the suggested age 541 Ma of the Ediacaran–Cambrian boundary and can no longer reference the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) correlation in southwest China. It can be suggested based on the previous stratigraphy and palaeontology studies from northern Sichuan and southern Shaanxi and the FAD of the globular embryos fossils that the Ediacaran−Cambrian boundary in the southwest Yangtze Block should be placed at the base of the Xiaowaitoushan Member; other phosphorite strata refer to Xiaowaitoushan Member. The discovery of the FADs of the shelly fossils in the Xiaowaitoushan Member provides new evidence for the global correlation of the Ediacaran –Cambrian boundary in the southwest Yangtze Block. The conodont discoloration index (CAI) of the specimens in Anning is between 2 and 3, which indicates that the organic matter in Xiaowaitoushan Member is matured and has high potential to form a shale gas reservoir.

Abstract:The Ediacaran Period was a critical time in the history of life and Earth. Understanding the complex interactions between geological and biological events during this interval requires high-resolution chronostratigraphy. Thanks to its uniquely favorable palaeogeographic setting, South China is an ideal region for constructing a framework for global chronostratigraphic correlation of Ediacaran strata. Here, continuous Ediacaran successions contain both siliciclastic and carbonate rocks that range from shallow to deep marine and contain rich fossil assemblages showing a variety of preservation styles. As part of the present study, 62 reference sections distributed throughout the Yangtze Platform were investigated. Analyses of the sedimentary facies and sequence stratigraphy of more than 40 sections revealed four major sequences in the shallow marine facies. Three major sequence boundaries occur respectively in the middle and upper parts of the Doushantuo Formation and in the middle part of the Dengying Formation. Subdivision and correlation of the Ediacaran successions of the Yangtze Platform based on sequence stratigraphy is congruent with the carbon isotope chemostratigraphy of 12 reference sections (1075 samples). The sequence boundary (SB2) in the middle part of the Doushantuo Formation is suggested here as the Lower (Xiadongian)/Upper (Yangtzean) series boundary of the Ediacaran which coincides with several globally recognizable events, namely 1) the end of the Neoproterozoic glaciations, 2) the first appearance of animals, 3) the sudden increase in the diversity of acanthomorphic acritarchs, and 4) a negative δ13C excursion. The Ediacaran System of South China may be subdivided into five stages. Furthermore, the criteria for defining these stages may be applicable throughout the world. Also, the composite carbon isotope profile of the Ediacaran of South China can be used as a global reference for chronostratigraphic subdivision and correlation. In addition to the globally recognizable, negative δ13C excursion in the cap carbonate at the base of the Ediacaran, the negative δ13C excursion in the uppermost Doushantuo/Wonoka/Shuram interval represents another, globally correlatable major excursion. The positive δ13C excursion immediately following the uppermost Doushantuo excursion and ending at 548 Ma is also useful for global correlation.

Abstract:The Ediacaran Period is punctuated by the ca. 580 Ma Gaskiers glaciation in Newfoundland. However, paleoclimatic data are scarce in Ediacaran successions in South China, where abundant geochemical and paleobiological data are shaping current understanding of Ediacaran evolutionary and environmental history. Here, we report the occurrence of silicified glendonites in the Ediacaran Doushantuo Formation deposited in an inner-shelf environment on the South China block. Petrographic evidence suggests that these silicified glendonites are pseudomorphs after syndepositional or early authigenic ikaites formed at near-freezing temperatures. The glendonite- bearing stratigraphic interval is characterized by positive delta C-13 values. It predates both the negative delta C-13 excursion EN3 (widely believed to be an equivalent of the Shuram negative excursion) and excursion EN2. Although alternative interpretations may be possible, these glendonites may be related to and correlated with the Gaskiers glaciation. If confirmed, this correlation suggests that the Shuram event postdates the Gaskiers glaciation, thus having important implications for Ediacaran climate changes, carbon cycles, and biological evolution.

Fu et al. describe an early Cambrian fossil site in China that contains a variety of specimens, more than half of which are previously undescribed (see the Perspective by Daley). The site rivals previously described Cambrian sites, such as the Burgess Shale, and should help to elucidate biological innovation and diversification during this period. Abstract:Since the “Snowball Event”,the early life has presented a multi-level,massive evolution,and reached its climax before the eve of the Cambrian.Accompanied the dramatic succession of life,the environment sign of the Earth changed and carbon isotope also shifted dramatically,both of which corresponded to the each stage of life succession.However,a big difference still occurs in the division of the most important geological boundaries,Precambrian-Cambrian stratotype section and point (“Golden Nail”,GSSP).Treptichnus pedum as a marker fossil of the GSSP has been questioned constantly in the global biostratigraphic division (especially in Siberia and South China),partially due to the fact that remains of trace fossils as a symbol also has certain defects.The earliest skeletal fossil Cloudina and the body fossil Shaanxilithes in South China can be well compared on a global scale,and the appearance of these two fossils corresponds to significant positive excursions of carbon isotope.By studying the stratigraphic distribution and geographical distribution characteristics of the fossil zone,this paper analyzes the spatiotemporal features and evolutional significance of the system,and discusses the potentials of Cloudina and Shaanxilithe as markers of Cambrian bottom.Finally,a more ideal standard is proposed to determine the Precambrian-Cambrian boundary.

Abstract:The northeastern Sichuan area in the northern Yangtze margin has unique Ediacaran geological records, especially the Doushantuo Formation (DST), and become a hot research area in recent years. However, the Cryogenian-Ediacaran (C-E) boundary has not been precisely identified, which restricts the in-depth study of geological information during this crucial transitional period and is unfavorable for a systematic and complete understanding of the Yangtze Block and even the global paleogeographic pattern. This study conducted stratigraphy, sedimentology, and chronostratigraphy to establish the stratigraphic framework and sedimentary evolution of the C-E transition strata in northeastern Sichuan. The results showed that the Ediacaran sediments, without the cap dolomite, unconformably overlaid the Cryogenian sediments in the studied area. The Member II of the DST, characterized by 50–160 m of red-green sandstone (approximately equivalent to the original Chengkou "Guanyinya Formation"), directly overlaid the Cryogenian sediments and displayed a 623 ± 2.3 Ma maximum depositional age from the detrital zircon U–Pb dating. Regional stratigraphic correlations indicate that the C-E transition strata in northeastern Sichuan had a consistent lithological association and sedimentary sequence characteristics but differed from the Three Gorges. Typically, the upper Nantuo massive glacial diamictites transition to the icebergs rafted lonestone-bearing mudstones at the top, then change upward to DST barrier coast sandstones. The proposed DST of the northeastern Sichuan Basin was divided into three lithostratigraphic members without the regional Member I cap dolomite: (i) Member II purple-red, gray-green sandstone strata, (ii) Member III black mudstone strata, and (iii) Member IV P–Mn bearing strata. During the C-E transition, the study area experienced (i) the global deglaciation stage in the terminal Marinoan glaciation and (ii) the filling-leveling up stage with clastic rocks in the early Ediacaran. Overall, the early Ediacaran of northeastern Sichuan succeeded the paleogeographic features of the late Cryogenian.

Abstract:Shaanxilithes is a potential index fossil of late Ediacaran for its cosmopolitan occurrences and narrow stratigraphic range. However, its morphology and taxonomy has long been controversial and its biological affinities remain problematic, with interpretations ranging from pogonophorans, sedimentary structures, trace fossils, algae, to metazoans of uncertain phylogeny. New materials from the late Ediacaran strata of North China reveal that Shaanxilithes is a nested internal tube encased within a flexible, annulated external tube, rather than a ribbon-shaped fossil as previously suggested. The co-occurred forms previously described as Helanoichnus, Shaanxilithes erodus and Palaeopascichnus, are reconsidered as taphonomic variations of Shaanxilithes ningqiangensis. On the basis of anatomical details, Shaanxilithes is assigned to the contemporaneous cloudinids, a group of late Ediacaran enigmatic tubular forms including the well-known Cloudina.
