Abstract:Bistable morphing structures are widely used as actuation mechanisms in soft actuators, soft robotics, energy absorbers, mechanical computers, optical lenses, metamaterials, and flexible electronics. However, untethered actuators, repetitive actuators, and hybrid-assembly (containing in-plane-assembly and out-of-plane-assembly) actuators remain challenging to realize using existing bistable structures, which hinders the novel application of such actuators in research, engineering, and daily life. This problem is solved by fabricating a magnet-driven soft bistable actuator (MSBA) unit. The self-buckling of the circular polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sheet ensures the bistability of the actuator and allows it to operate as an independent unit, free of external constraints. The reorientation of neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) microparticles embedded in the PDMS sheet enables the dome-shaped actuators to exhibit repetitive snapping under the stimulus of a direction-switching magnetic field. The potential of this MSBA unit in bionics, electronics, and biomechanics applications is demonstrated in systematic studies involving modification of the buckling deflection and magnetic moment density. The MSBA unit exhibits excellent performance in hybrid designs and intelligent systems. This work develops a magnet-driven soft bistable actuator embedded with reoriented hard magnetic microparticles. This protocol realizes untethered and reversible bistable behavior with a switch in the direction of the magnetic field. The magnet-driven soft bistable actuator (MSBA) can be assembled in-plane, out-of-plane, or in a hybrid manner, offering multistable configurations and finding its potential application in biomimetic grippers, reconfigurable electronics, and dynamic bioreactor.image

Abstract:Electrothermal actuators have attracted widespread interest owing to the potential in soft robotics, whereas the lower actuated voltage and higher thermal conductivity remain main challenges to enhance their electrothermal actuating performance. Here, we propose a one-step magnetically induced sedimentation method for fabri-cating self-stratifying PDMS/CI/LM (polydimethylsiloxane/carbonyl iron/liquid metal) film to improve the deficiencies. Ideally, the ther-mal conductivity of the hybrid film is increased by 2.3 times than pure PDMS film. Under low voltage (<3.5 V) stimulation, the hybrid film-based actuator can produce a maximum temperature of 120 degrees C and bending curvature of 1.68 cm -1. Moreover, the special structure of the hybrid film can be further assembled to be a pres-sure/magnetic biresponsive sensor, which also can be applied as the "on-off"controller. Finally, the bionic frog tongue and portable tactile-activated gripper are fabricated, demonstrating that the developed electrothermal actuator possesses wide application po-tential in intelligent devices and bionic robots.

Dual-mode Biomimetic Soft Actuator with Electrothermal and Magneto-Responsive Performance

Abstract:Soft actuators with large deformation and high stability in response to multi-stimuli are highly demanded in biomimetic applications. However, most of the present actuators driven by a single stimulus often exhibit low performance and high energy consumption. In this work, a sandwich structural soft actuator (MPDMS/MXene/ PTFE) which possesses electrothermal/magnetic coupling actuation is fabricated by combining magnetic NdFeB/ Polydimethylsiloxane (MPDMS) composite layer, MXene film, and PTFE tape together. Due to the large difference of thermal expansion coefficient between MPDMS film and PTFE tape, the soft actuator shows a wonderful electrothermal actuation and the bending deformation can reach to as high as 353 under a 3 V power supply. The excellent electrical conductivity of MXene component endows the sandwich film with good thermal management performance, thus the soft MPDMS/MXene/PTFE sandwich films can be applied in the thermal treatment of body and thermal imaging. Most importantly, the soft actuator also exhibits a typical magnetic biomimetic actuation and the programmable actuation performance of the dragonfly actuator can be demonstrated by both experiments and finite element simulations. Eventually, the electrothermal/magnetic coupling actuation is successfully applied in an intelligent crawling robot to overcome the traditional inchworm movement simulation.
Liquid Metal-Enabled Soft Actuators for Untethered Manipulation

Abstract:Recently, the newly emerging soft robotics has attracted extensive interest because of its flexible actuating strategies, compatibility for various working occasions, and safe interaction with humans. Among the various strategies to actuate soft devices, the very one based on magnetic manipulation is promising as the untethered control will be beneficial for the ultimate autonomy of soft robots. Therefore, the development of magnetic responsive materials as well as proper soft structures, should be taken into consideration. The room-temperature liquid metal (LM) has recently become a promising kind of functional material due to its unique characteristics. Moreover, the superiority of LM to construct soft composites with multi-functions will expand its role in the field of soft robots. Here in this article, a kind of functional multilayer structure assisted by soft magnetic LMs was introduced, which featured magnetic responsiveness, ease of fabrication, and flexibility of usage. Based on this structure, a series of soft actuators with specific configurations were proposed and manufactured. Motions about terrestrial locomotion, jumping, and periodical flowering were fulfilled, respectively. Furthermore, two occasions about load transportation and electrical switch were performed to prove their potentials in practical use. We hope that such a magnetic LM enabled structure can have more applications in advanced soft robots in the future.

Abstract:This work reported a high performance flexible magnetically controllable actuator based on magnetoactive elastomer (MAE) and poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composite film. The magnetic-mechanic-electric coupling properties of the actuator were systematically investigated by cyclical wrinkle, magnetic bending, and stretching test. The induced charge under a magnetic bending can reach as large as 158pC even at small magnetic field of 100mT with the bending angle up to almost 90° within 0.6s. Moreover, a new model was proposed to theoretically reveal the intrinsic correspondence. The model matches well with the experimental results. Based on this kind of actuator, a magnetically controllable tentacle is developed, which could grasp, transport, and release object by switching the supplied current. Due to the real-time deformation feedback characteristics, this kind of actuators can find wide applications in actively controllable engineering, artificial robotics, and biomedicine.

Abstract:Soft robots are devices that can perform delicate and sensitive movements. Such robots have flexible actuators activated by external triggers. Magnetic soft actuators, triggered by external magnetic fields, can be operated remotely and wirelessly. We present new materials and processes to fabricate 2D and 3D magneto-thermal actuators (MTA) by a printing process. Unlike most earlier reports, our actuators are activated by an alternating magnetic field. The formed bilayer actuators which combine a flexible polymer layer with a magnetic layer can heat up under an alternating magnetic field (AMF) which triggers the actuation and shape morphing. The actuation is based on the difference in the thermal expansion coefficient of the two layers. The achieved curvatures are very large, in the range of 0.08-0.1 mm -1 . The effect of various actuation parameters was studied, providing a good agreement of the experimental results with the modeling predictions. A 2D gripper and a "flower" were activated remotely without wiring or patterning of the magnetic layer. A 3D-printed MTA, obtained by combining stereolithography-based 3D printing with spray deposition, was also developed. Actuators with complex 3D structures formed by 3D printed process, resulting in objects that undergo remotely activated shape morphing, as demonstrated for a drone-like wing, performing a controlled tilting movement. The excellent actuation of these magneto-thermal actuators suggests their promise in soft robotics, for which wireless and remote activation present an unmet need.

Abstract:Reprogrammable magneto-responsive soft actuators capable of working in enclosed and confined spaces and adapting functions under changing situations are highly demanded for new-generation smart devices. Despite the promising prospect, the realization of versatile morphing modes (more than bending) and local magnetic control remains challenging but is crucial for further on-demand applications. Here, we address the challenges by maximizing the unexplored potential of magnetothermal responsiveness and covalent adaptable networks (CANs) in liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs). Various magneto-actuated contraction-derived motions that were hard to achieve previously (e.g., bidirectional shrinkage and dynamic 3D patterns) can be attained, reprogrammed, and assembled seamlessly to endow functional diversity and complexity. By integration of LCEs with different magneto-responsive threshold values, local and sequential magnetic control is readily realized. Many magnetic actuation portfolios are performed by rationally imputing "logic switch" sequences. Meanwhile, our systems exhibit additional favorable performances including stepwise magnetic controllability, multiresponsiveness, self-healing, and remolding ability.

Abstract:Abstract Novel kinds of magnetism-driven poly N,N-dimethylacrylamide bilayer intelligent hydrogels with various nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) contents were prepared successfully via one-step insitu free radical polymerization. The bilayer hydrogels possessed high mechanical strength, efficient swelling and steady magnetic response. With the increase of nanofibrillated cellulose content, the crosslinking density of the hydrogels increased, leading to the decrease of swelling rate and increase of mechanical strength and swelling bending degree of hydrogel actuators, respectively. Fe 3 O 4 particles existed tightly on the micropore surfaces of the hydrogels, which built the function base of magnetic response of hydrogel actuators. The addition of Fe 3 O 4 was irrelevant to the variation of crosslinking density. The bilayer structure exhibited high bonding strength. Based on intelligent responsive properties, bilayer hydrogels were designed as soft magnetism-driven actuators, realizing capture and transportation properties and provided material candidates for soft robots.

Abstract:Soft robots controlled by different actuation schemes are flourishing owing to the continued development of smart materials. However, most of the existing actuators are powered by a single source with predetermined mechanical properties and motion characteristics. Speed, power, and efficiency of these actuators are thus far inferior to their conventional counter parts. How to preload or alter the internal energy distribution and trigger rapid kinetic energy release combined with re-programmability is a challenge and corresponding solutions will extend the practical use of soft robotics. Herein, a hybrid magnetically and photothermally responsive actuator with high degrees of freedom by using a coupled-field manipulation strategy is proposed. As a proof-of-concept, a crab robot (CraBot) that contains uniformly distributed superparamagnetic particles and localized light-responsive joints is produced. The spatial magnetic field exerts force on the robot, leading to real-time adjustment of energy distribution within the entire robot. Meanwhile, the focused light field enables selective deformation of specific joints, releasing the accumulated energy into kinetic energy of motion for quick actuation. The directional accumulation and addressable release of elastic energy enables the CraBot to walk efficiently with improved power and speed. Such a hybrid-field manipulation strategy holds great promise for sophisticated actuation of soft robots.

Abstract:The fabrication of thermo-magnetic dual-responsive soft robots often requires intricate designs to implement complex locomotion patterns and utilize the implemented responsive behaviors. This work demonstrates a minimally designed soft robot based on poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (pNIPAM) and ferromagnetic particles, showcasing excellent control over both thermo- and magnetic responses. Free radical polymerization enables the magnetic particles to be entrapped homogeneously within the polymeric network. The integration of magnetic shape programming and temperature response allows the robot to perform various tasks including shaping, locomotion, pick-and-place, and release maneuvers of objects using independent triggers. The robot can be immobilized in a gripping state through magnetic actuation, and a subsequent increase in temperature transitions the robot from a swollen to a collapsed state. The temperature switch enables the robot to maintain a secured configuration while executing other movements via magnetic actuation. This approach offers a straightforward yet effective solution for achieving full control over both stimuli in dual-responsive soft robotics.

Abstract:The development of film soft actuators with contact feedback and outstanding environmental robustness is desirable. In this work, a film-based soft actuator laminated by polyethylene glycol terephthalate (PET), carbon black ink, and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is proposed. Due to the enormous difference in thermal expansion coefficients between these materials, the actuator achieves a large bending deformation angle and a high response speed. Without the shape-memory materials, the actuator can return to its original shape under light-induced after being subjected to mechanical stress. Meanwhile, the actuator maintains its shape after being exposed to extreme temperatures of up to 200 °C and immersion in a variety of solvents. Furthermore, based on the triboelectric effect, the actuator can generate remarkable real-time electrical signals when it mimics the tongue of frogs, bends deformation, and simulates mechanical grippers. This work demonstrates a simple method for building various intelligent and flexible electronic devices and provides promising applications for soft robots.

Abstract:Bioinspired soft actuators, capable of undergoing shape deformation in response to external triggers, hold great potential in fields such as soft robotics, artificial muscles, drug delivery, and smart switches. However, their widespread application is hindered by limitations in responsiveness, durability, and complex fabrication processes. In this study, we propose a new approach to tackle these challenges by developing a single-layer soft actuator that responds to multiple stimuli using a straightforward solution-casting method. This actuator comprises bio-polymer gelatin, bio-compatible PEDOT:PSS, and iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles. Our actuator exhibits responsiveness to a range of organic solvent vapors, including water vapor, light, and magnetic fields. Notably, it exhibits rapid and reversible bending in distinct directions in response to different vapors, bending upwards in the presence of water vapor and downwards in the presence of alcohol vapor. Moreover, exposure to infrared (IR) light induces an instantaneous bending toward the light source. The incorporation of magnet-responsive Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles induces multi-functionality in the actuator. The actuation characteristics of the actuator are controlled by leveraging its responsiveness to dual stimuli, such as water vapor and magnetic fields, as well as light and magnetic fields. For the proof of concept, we showcase several potential applications of our multi-stimuli responsive soft actuator, including magnet-triggered electrical switches, cargo transportation, soft grippers, targeted drug delivery, energy harvesting, and bio-mimicry.

Abstract:Many natural systems that are capable of self-regulated, autonomous controlling their shapes, generally match or even exceed the performance of rigid robotic systems. Currently, designing biomimetic soft devices by mimicking the natural intelligence with tunable ability still remains a grand challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a novel biomimetic cilia-like soft device using the magnetic feedback of microrod arrays. Such cilia-like microrod arrays are fabricated by distributing Co nanoparticles into silicon-based polymer. The critical aspect ratio of the microrod arrays can reach 48.7, which is 5.4-times higher than original 9.1 through considerably reducing its surface energy. This large increase in critical aspect ratio will endow the microrods an excellent durability and ensure the posture recovery during the magnate-responsive actuation. Meanwhile, magnetic-responsive Co nanoparticles are aligned and concentrated in the top of each microrod, which leads to the differentiated elastic modulus and ultimate strength along the length. Thereby, as the magnetic field intensity increases, the microrod arrays autonomously perform correspondingly reversible bending deformation without collapse, successfully achieving remotely controlled magnetic actuation. Therefore, this work opens up a new avenue towards soft, autonomous smart devices.

Abstract:Magnetic programming soft machines has great development prospects in the fields of minimally invasive medicine, wearable device and soft robot. However, unrepeatable magnetization and low modulus limits their applications. So far, there are few techniques that can make magnetic soft robots have adjustable functions, mechanical and electrical properties. This paper presented a magnetic functional elastomer based on liquid metal-NdFeB-Silicone composite materials. This magnetoelastomer uses the phase transition characteristics of liquid-metal and magnetic guided rotation of micro ferromagnetic particles to realize reprogrammable magnetization and modulus. The elastomer's fabrication method was given and the basic programmable properties were tested. Some robot prototypes have also been manufactured to show how to respond to different mission requirements by programming magnetization and modulus. Our research provides a new path for the design and large-scale manufacturing of magnetic soft robot.

Abstract:Soft magnetic materials have drawn the attention of researchers worldwide due to their field response actuation, reversible shape morphing capability, remote controllability, an extensive penetration range in numerous circumstances, and diverse applications in the field of engineering, robotics, and medical science. The fabrication and programming of these actuators have been difficult, expensive, and complex, specifically in generating locomotion. This work aims at achieving the kinetic locomotion in actuators inspired by the caterpillar, inchworm, and centipede using a very simplistic approach. To achieve this, a programming technique has been developed through which a magnetic elastomer can be programmed on the curing bed to mimic the motion of the organisms mentioned above. The Carbonyl Iron (CI) particles dispersed in a viscous thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) solution are cured under a magnetic field generated using a rotating permanent magnet. In the presence of a magnetic field, the magnetic particles tend to align in the direction of the magnetic field in the matrix. After curing, the actuator has an initial shape that changes to the programmed shape upon applying the magnetic field. The change in shape depends on the intensity of the magnetic field, i.e. if the magnetic field during programming was 0.5 T, then to achieve the programmed shape, we need to maintain the field value greater than or equal to 0.5 T. At the lower field values, the change in shape is slow. Thus, locomotion of the sample has been achieved by controlling the magnetic field intensity.

Abstract:Soft actuators with perception capability are essential for robots to intelligently interact with humans and the environment. However, existing perceptive soft actuators require complex integration and coupling between the discrete functional units to achieve autonomy. Here, we report entirely soft actuators with embodied sensing, actuation, and control at the single-unit level. This is achieved by synergistically harnessing the mechanosensing and electrothermal properties of liquid metal (LM) to actuate the thermally responsive liquid crystal elastomer (LCE). We create multifunctional LM circuits on the LCE surface using a simple and facile methodology based on magnetic printing. The fluidic LM circuit can not only be utilized as a conformable resistive heater but also as a sensory skin to perceive its own deformation. Moreover, the rational design of the LM circuits makes it possible to achieve biomimetic autonomous actuation in response to mechanical stimuli such as pressure or strain. In addition, the intrinsic stretchability of LM allows us to create 3D spring-like actuators <i>via</i> a simple prestretch step, and complex helical motions can be obtained upon mechanical stimulation. Abstract:Magneto-responsive soft actuators have attracted significant attention due to their non-contact nature and exceptional responsiveness. However, existing actuation methods relying on a single magnetic source, such as permanent magnets or electromagnets, suffer from an imbalance between flexible regulation and low energy operation. In this study, we propose a novel hybrid-excited magnetic actuation approach that leverages the synergy between permanent magnets and electromagnets. By utilizing the static magnetic field generated by permanent magnets to stabilize the deformation state of soft actuators, and employing the pulsed magnetic field generated by electromagnets to regulate the deformation, we achieve a harmonious combination of flexibility and energy efficiency. Furthermore, we introduce a two-step magnetization method that enhances the deformability of multi-arm soft actuators, enabling complete closure after deformation. To exemplify the practical implications, we develop a magnetic soft gripper system capable of versatile object manipulation, offering precise control over the grasping and releasing processes without the need for electrical energy consumption. Experimental results demonstrate the exceptional performance of the soft gripper, including a high lifting ratio (larger than 50), fast (<0.05s) and adjustable response. Moreover, we substantiate its potential in real-world scenarios through targeted delivery of single objects with different physical features and simultaneous manipulation of multiple objects with selective capability. This research presents a significant advancement in the field of magneto-responsive soft actuators, offering novel design principles, improved performance, and promising applications across various domains.
