Abstract:Transition metal oxides (TMOs) hold great potential for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) on account of the high theoretical capacity. Unfortunately, the unfavorable volume expansion and low intrinsic electronic conductivity of TMOs lead to irreversible structural degradation, disordered particle agglomeration, and sluggish electrochemical reaction kinetics, which result in perishing rate capability and long-term stability. This work reports an Fe2O3/MoO3@NG heterostructure composite for LIBs through the uniform growth of Fe2O3/MoO3 heterostructure quantum dots (HQDs) on the N-doped rGO (NG). Due to the synergistic effects of the "couple tree"-type heterostructures constructed by Fe2O3 and MoO3 with NG, Fe2O3/MoO3@NG delivers a prominent rate performance (322 mA h g-1 at 20 A g-1, 5.0 times higher than that of Fe2O3@NG) and long-term cycle stability (433.5 mA h g-1 after 1700 cycles at 10 A g-1). Theoretical calculations elucidate that the strong covalent Fe-O-Mo, Mo-N, and Fe-N bonds weaken the diffusion energy barrier and promote the Li+-ion reaction to Fe2O3/MoO3@NG, thereby facilitating the structural stability, pseudocapacitance contribution, and electrochemical reaction kinetics. This work may provide a feasible strategy to promote the practical application of TMO-based LIBs.

Abstract:Herein, heterostructure engineering is employed to generate an electric‐field effect in MoS2 nanosheets via integration with flexible titanium‐based transition metal compound (TiN and TiO2) nanowires. Both theoretical and experimental analyses reveal that the large‐scale electric‐field effect at the interfaces enhances the adsorption energy of Zn‐ions and increases their charge transfer, which leads to excellent performance. The electric‐field effect is an important factor to enhance the charge diffusion and transfer kinetics of interfacial electrode materials. Herein, by designing a heterojunction, the influence of the electric‐field effect on the kinetics of the MoS2 as cathode materials for aqueous Zn‐ion batteries (AZIBs) is deeply investigated. The hybrid heterojunction is developed by hydrothermal growth of MoS2 nanosheets on robust titanium‐based transition metal compound ([titanium nitride, TiN] and [titanium oxide, TiO2]) nanowires, denoted TNC@MoS2 and TOC@MoS2 NWS, respectively. Benefiting from the heterostructure architecture and electric‐field effect, the TNC@MoS2 electrodes exhibit an impressive rate performance of 200 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1 and cycling stability over 3000 cycles. Theoretical studies reveal that the hybrid architecture exhibits a large‐scale electric‐field effect at the interface between TiN and MoS2, enhances the adsorption energy of Zn‐ions, and increases their charge transfer, which leads to accelerated diffusion kinetics. In addition, the electric‐field effect can also be effectively applied to TiO2 and MoS2, confirming that the concept of heterostructures stimulating electric‐field can provide a relevant understanding for the architecture of other cathode materials for AZIBs and beyond.

Abstract:The transport property of the manganite heterojunction La0.9Ca0.1MnO3+δ∕SrTiO3 (doped by 1wt%Nb) has been experimentally studied. The most important results of the present work are the discovery of the charge tunneling-dominated transport process, characterized by the appearance of the rectifying behaviors fairly described by the Newman equation I∝exp(αT)exp(βV) in a considerable temperature range (α and β are constants, and I and V are current and voltage, respectively). Significant modification of magnetic field to charge tunneling is also observed. It is believed that magnetic field depresses junction resistance by reducing depletion width of the junction.

Abstract:Nature's various hierarchical structures exhibit exceptional performance in enhancing mass transport. However, how to bionic nano-hierarchical structures to enhance ion dynamics and achieve charge regulation is a significant challenge. Herein, a nano-hierarchical porous hybrid membrane inspired by nature was designed by integrating 1D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on the 2D MXene substrate utilizing MOF nanoparticles with tailorable positive and negative surface charges. The synergistic effects of the bioinspired nanohierarchical porous structure and surface charge interactions significantly enhance the performance and stability of the nanoconfined membrane, as corroborated by experimental characterizations and theoretical simulations. As a result, the optimized nanohierarchical porous membrane exhibits high a cation selectivity of 0.95, an outstanding power density of 35.04 W m-2, and excellent stability over one month. Synergizing enhanced mass transport and ion dynamics in nano-hierarchically structured materials with tailored charge improves osmotic power generation efficiency and benefits logic circuits with controlled charge transport.

Empowering lithium-ion storage: unveiling the superior performance of niobium-based oxide/perovskite heterojunction with built-in electric field

Abstract:The increasing demand for high-performance electrode materials in lithium-ion batteries has driven significant attention towards Nb2O5 due to its high working voltage, large theoretical capacity, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness. However, inherent drawbacks such as poor electrical conductivity and sluggish electrochemical reaction kinetics have hindered its lithium storage performance. In this study, we introduced KCa2Nb3O10 into Nb2O5 to form a heterojunction, creating a built-in electric field to enhance the migration and diffusion of Li+, effectively promoting electrochemical reaction kinetics. Under the regulation of the built-in electric field, the charge transfer resistance of the KCa2Nb3O10/Nb2O5 anode decreased by 3.4 times compared to pure Nb2O5, and the Li+ diffusion coefficient improved by two orders of magnitude. Specifically, the KCa2Nb3O10/Nb2O5 anode exhibited a high capacity of 276 mAh g-1 under 1 C, retaining a capacity of 128 mAh g-1 even at 100 C. After 3000 cycles at 25 C, the capacity degradation was only 0.012% per cycle. Through combined theoretical calculations and experimental validation, it was found that the built-in electric field induced by the heterojunction interface contributed to an asymmetric charge distribution, thereby improving the rates of charge and ion migration within the electrode, ultimately enhancing the electrochemical performance of the electrode material. This study provides an effective approach for the rational design of high-performance electrode materials.

Abstract:Battery-type electrode materials show inferior power density due to sluggish ion-diffusion kinetics within the solid phase. Herein, we outline a strategy to improve the cation migration for ultrafast energy storage by utilizing a built-in electric field (BEF) at the heterostructure interface. Both theoretical calculations and Kelvin probe measurements reveal that two kinds of BEF - in opposite directions - are produced at fully charged and discharged states on co-axial MoOx/MoON nanotubes (NTs). The transport kinetics are greatly increased by the BEF effect, leading to a dramatic increase of capacitance, especially at a high charging rate. Subsequently, MoOx/MoON NTs exhibit a specific capacitance of 1976 F cm(-3) at a current density of 2.5 A cm(-3). And 1267 F cm(-3) is retained at a high current density of 100 A cm(-3), which can be ascribed to the improvement of fast ionic transport in the electrode bulk caused by the BEF effect. This work also inspires a new pathway toward rational engineering of heterostructures for high-capacitance and high-rate energy storage.
Electronic Structure Modulation in MoO 2 /MoP Heterostructure to Induce Fast Electronic/Ionic Diffusion Kinetics for Lithium Storage

Abstract:Transition metal oxides (TMOs) are considered as the prospective anode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Nevertheless, the disadvantages, including large volume variation and poor electrical conductivity, obstruct these materials to meet the needs of practical application. Well-designed mesoporous nanostructures and electronic structure modulation can enhance the electron/Li-ions diffusion kinetics. Herein, a unique mesoporous molybdenum dioxide/molybdenum phosphide heterostructure nanobelts (meso-MoO2 /MoP-NBs) composed of uniform nanoparticles is obtained by one-step phosphorization process. The Mott-Schottky tests and density functional theory calculations demonstrated that meso-MoO2 /MoP-NBs possesses superior electronic conductivity. The detailed lithium storage mechanism (solid solution reaction for MoP and partial conversion for MoO2 ), small change ratio of crystal structure and fast electronic/ionic diffusion behavior of meso-MoO2 /MoP-NBs are systematically investigated by operando X-ray diffraction, ex situ transmission electron microscopy, and kinetic analysis. Benefiting from the synergistic effects, the meso-MoO2 /MoP-NBs displays a remarkable cycling performance (515 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at 1 A g-1 ) and excellent rate capability (291 mAh g-1 at 8 A g-1 ). These findings can shed light on the behavior of the electron/ion regulation in heterostructures and provide a potential route to develop high-performance lithium-ion storage materials.

Improving built-in electric fields for effective photocatalytic activity in rationally designed electron transfer pathway of TiO2@MoS2/Bi2S3

Abstract:The efficiency of photocatalytic activity relies on rationally controlling the rapid charge transfer channel and the interfacial electric field. In this article, a ternary TiO2@MoS2/Bi2S3 is proposed, in which TiO2 hierarchical microspheres are assembled with MoS2 nanosheets and Bi2S3 NPs. This assembly generates a substantial surface electrostatic potential difference at the interface, thereby strengthening the built-in electric field. The internal electric field intensity of TiO2@MoS2/Bi2S3 is 5.6 and 1.8 times greater than that detected in TiO2 and TiO2@MoS2, respectively. This considerable increase significantly speeds up the migration of out-of-plane electrons at the TiO2/MoS2 and MoS2/Bi2S3 interfaces. Driven by this enhanced field, TiO2@MoS2/Bi2S3 exhibits dramatically improved photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation, achieving 8.3 times and 2.7 times higher than that of pristine TiO2 and TiO2@MoS2 on the degradation rate of tetrachlorophenol (4-CP) respectively, along with 6% of incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (IPCE). In addition, mechanism investigation demonstrated Schottky barrier is established due to the Fermi level convergence and the bending of energy band, effectively inhibiting the electron backflow. Furthermore, DFT calculations and mechanism investigation revealed that the photo-induced electrons transfer route in the direction of MoS2 efficiently suppressed the electron-hole recombination process, ultimately facilitating the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This work provides the comprehensive understanding of the mechanism in depth for enhancing built-in electric field via formation of dual heterostructure, constituting a promising strategy to design photocatalysts for realizing high-efficiency photocatalytic activity. Abstract:Schottky heterostructures have significant advantages for exciting charge transfer kinetics at material interfaces. In this work, endogenous Nb2CTx/Nb2O5 Schottky heterostructures with a large active surface area were constructed using an in-situ architectural strategy. The semiconductor Nb2O5 has a low work function, and during the construction of Nb2CTx/Nb2O5 Schottky heterostructures, there was an interfacial electron transfer, which resulted in a built-in electric field. The electrochemical reaction kinetics of Nb2CTx/Nb2O5 Schottky heterostructures were enhanced due to the rapid transfer of charge driven by the electric field. The Nb2CTx/Nb2O5 Schottky heterostructures have a large active surface area, which contributes to excellent electrolyte diffusion kinetics. Therefore, Nb2CTx/Nb2O5 Schottky heterostructures have excellent lithium-ion storage capacity with 575 mAh/g after 200 cycles at 0.10 A/g, and 290 mAh/g after 1000 cycles at 2.00 A/g, without capacity fading. Furthermore, in-situ X-ray diffraction and ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses reveal the mechanisms for structure evolution and lithium-ion storage optimization of Nb2CTx/Nb2O5 Schottky heterostructures during the electrochemical reaction. The construction of Schottky heterostructures with excited charge transport kinetics provides a novel idea for optimizing the lithium-ion storage activity of MXenes materials.
Accelerated Ionic and Charge Transfer through Atomic Interfacial Electric Fields for Superior Sodium Storage

Abstract:Atomic interfacial electric fields hold great potential for boosting ionic and charge transfer and accelerating electrochemical reaction kinetics. Here, built-in electric fields within the heterostructure are created by electrostatic assembly of unilamellar titano-niobate/graphene (reduced graphene oxide) nanosheets as building blocks. Scanning Kelvin probe microscopy confirms the existence of built-in electric fields by detecting the unbalanced surface potential of disparate nanosheets in the heterostructure, which facilitates ion and electron transfer, thus enabling an excellent reversible sodium storage capacity of 245 mAh g–1 at 0.05 A g–1. Theoretical analysis also confirms that the electric field can enhance the electric conductivity and facilitate electron transfer at the atomic interface. Moreover, in situ TEM observations confirm the homogeneous intercalation of sodium ions and very small volume expansion of the hybrid materials. As a result, a highly stable lifetime of 3000 cycles is achieved with capacity retention of 98.8%. High Flux and Stability of Cationic Intercalation in Transition-Metal Oxides: Unleashing the Potential of Mn t2g Orbital via Enhanced π-Donation

Abstract:Transition-metal oxides (TMOs) often struggle with challenges related to low electronic conductivity and unsatisfactory cyclic stability toward cationic intercalation. In this work, we tackle these issues by exploring an innovative strategy: leveraging heightened π-donation to activate the t2g orbital, thereby enhancing both electron/ion conductivity and structural stability of TMOs. We engineered Ni-doped layered manganese dioxide (Ni-MnO2), which is characterized by a distinctive Ni-O-Mn bridging configuration. Remarkably, Ni-MnO2 presents an impressive capacitance of 317 F g-1 and exhibits a robust cyclic stability, maintaining 81.58% of its original capacity even after 20,000 cycles. Mechanism investigations reveal that the incorporation of Ni-O-Mn configurations stimulates a heightened π-donation effect, which is beneficial to the π-type orbital hybridization involving the O 2p and the t2g orbital of Mn, thereby accelerating charge-transfer kinetics and activating the redox capacity of the t2g orbital. Additionally, the charge redistribution from Ni to the t2g orbital of Mn effectively elevates the low-energy orbital level of Mn, thus mitigating the undesirable Jahn-Teller distortion. This results in a subsequent decrease in the electron occupancy of the π*-antibonding orbital, which promotes an overall enhancement in structural stability. Our findings pave the way for an innovative paradigm in the development of fast and stable electrode materials for intercalation energy storage by activating the low orbitals of the TM center from a molecular orbital perspective.

Abstract:Electrocatalysts with appropriate electron coupling toward LiO2 intermediates can exhibit superior oxygen reduction/evolution reaction kinetics in Li-O2 batteries (LOBs). In this work, a charge redistribution strategy has been developed by constructing NiS/MoS2 heterostructure nanosheet self-assembled hollow microspheres with an internal electric field to regulate the interaction with LiO2 and then improve the electrochemical performance of LOBs. Density functional theory calculations and physicochemical characterizations reveal that the difference of work functions between NiS and MoS2 promotes the electron redistribution in heterointerface via built-in electrical field, leading to increased electron density of interfacial Ni atom, thereby enhancing its electron coupling toward LiO2 intermediates and promoting one-electron oxygen reduction/oxidation reaction kinetics. As a result, the NiS/MoS2-based LOBs exhibit evidently higher discharge capacity and much better cycling performance than the batteries using NiS and MoS2. This work provides a reliable charge redistribution strategy induced by build-in electric field to design efficient catalysts for LOBs.
Enhanced Energy Storage Properties and DFT Investigation of a Zn-Co-Mo Heterojunction Rich in Oxygen Vacancies with Dual Electron Transport Pathways

Abstract:Petal-like heterojunction materials ZnCo2O4/CoMoO4 with abundant oxygen vacancies are prepared on nickel foam (NF) using modified ionic hybrid thermal calcination technology. Nanoscale ion intermixing between Zn and Mo ions induces oxygen vacancies in the annealing process, thus creating additional electrochemical active sites and enhancing the electrical conductivity. The ZnCo2O4/CoMoO4 conductive network skeleton forms the primary transport pathway for electrons, while the internal electric field of the heterojunction serves as the secondary pathway. ZnCo2O4/CoMoO4 exhibits excellent rate performance and high capacity attributable to its unique double electron transport mode and the effect of oxygen vacancies. The initial discharge capacity at a current of 0.1 A g-1 is approximately 1774 mAh g-1, and the reversible capacity remains at 1100 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles. After a high current of 1 A g-1, the reversible capacity is observed to remain at approximately 1240 mAh g-1. The electronic structure, crystal structure, and work function of the heterojunction interface model are then analyzed by density functional theory (DFT). The analysis results indicate that the charge at the ZnCo2O4/CoMoO4 interface is unevenly distributed, which leads to an enhanced degree of electrochemical reaction. The presence of an internal electric field improves the transport efficiency of the carriers. Experimental and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the ZnCo2O4/CoMoO4 anode material designed in this work provides a reference for fabricating transition metal oxide-based lithium-ion batteries.
Elucidating the Synergic Effect in Nanoscale MoS2/TiO2 Heterointerface for Na‐Ion Storage

Abstract:Interface engineering in electrode materials is an attractive strategy for enhancing charge storage, enabling fast kinetics, and improving cycling stability for energy storage systems. Nevertheless, the performance improvement is usually ambiguously ascribed to the "synergetic effect", the fundamental understanding toward the effect of the interface at molecular level in composite materials remains elusive. In this work, a well-defined nanoscale MoS2/TiO2 interface is rationally designed by immobilizing TiO2 nanocrystals on MoS2 nanosheets. The role of heterostructure interface between TiO2 and MoS2 by operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction (sXRD), solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, and density functional theory calculations is investigated. It is found that the existence of a hetero-interfacial electric field can promote charge transfer kinetics. Based on operando sXRD, it is revealed that the heterostructure follows a solid-solution reaction mechanism with small volume changes during cycling. As such, the electrode demonstrates ultrafast Na+ ions storage of 300 mAh g(-1) at 10 A g(-1) and excellent reversible capacity of 540 mAh g(-1) at 0.2 A g(-1). This work provides significant insights into understanding of heterostructure interface at molecular level, which suggests new strategies for creating unconventional nanocomposite electrode materials for energy storage systems.

Abstract:Bronze phase TiO 2 (TiO 2 (B)) has attracted significant interest as potential anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to its distinctive open tunnel structure, offering abundant insertion sites for Na + -ions. However, the practical application has been hindered by its poor electrical conductivity and insufficient Na + diffusion kinetics. Herein, we propose a novel strategy that integrates defect introducing and heterostructures engineering to enhance the performance of TiO 2 (B) anode. Specifically, we aim to induce oxygen vacancies (OVs) into TiO 2 (B) through N-doping and in-situ growth on MXenes nanosheets, thereby fabricating N-doped TiO 2 (B)/MXenes (N-TiO-MX) heterostructures. This strategy leverages the synergistic effects of OVs and N-atoms, along with the formation of heterointerfaces, to effectively reduce the bandgap, increase the number of Na + -ion storage sites, and shorten ion diffusion distances. The robust coupling between TiO 2 (B) and MXenes ensures the structural integrity of N-TiO-MX heterostructures. Consequently, the N-TiO-MX exhibits a high specific capacity of 211.3 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 after 400 cycles and superior cycling stability with 163.1 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 . The study provides unique insights for designing heterostructure materials to achieve high capacity and excellent fast-charging capability.

Abstract:Recently, heterostructures have attracted much attention in widespread research fields. By tailoring the physicochemical properties of the two components, creating heterostructures endows composites with diverse functions due to the synergistic effects and interfacial interaction. Here, a simple in situ localized phase transformation method is proposed to transform the transition-metal oxide electrode materials into heterostructures. Taking molybdenum oxide as an example, quasi-core-shell MoO3@MoO2 heterostructures were successfully fabricated, which were uniformly anchored on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for high-rate and highly durable lithium ion storage. The in situ introduction of the MoO2 shell not only effectively enhances the electronic conductivity but also creates MoO3@MoO2 heterojunctions with abundant oxygen vacancies, which induces an inbuilt driving force at the interface, enhancing ion/electron transfer. In operando synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction has confirmed the excellent phase reversibility of the MoO2 shell during charge/discharge cycling, which contributes to the excellent cycling stability of the MoO3@MoO2/rGO electrode (1208.9 mAh g-1 remaining at 5 A g-1 after 2000 cycles). This simple in situ heterostructure fabrication method provides a facile way to optimize electrode materials for high-performance lithium ion batteries and possibly other energy storage devices.

Abstract:A heterostructure of polyaniline intercalated Bi2O2CO3/MXene (BOC‐PA/MXene) hybrids is designed via simple self‐assembly strategy. The ingenious design of heterointerface‐rich architecture motivates significantly the interior self‐built‐in electric field (IEF) and high‐density electron flow, thus accelerating the charge transfer and boosting ion diffusion. As a result, the hybrids realize a high reversible specific capacity, satisfying rate capability as well as long‐term cycling stability. Bismuth‐based materials have been recognized as the appealing anodes for potassium‐ion batteries (PIBs) due to their high theoretical capacity. However, the kinetics sluggishness and capacity decline induced by the structure distortion predominately retard their further development. Here, a heterostructure of polyaniline intercalated Bi2O2CO3/MXene (BOC‐PA/MXene) hybrids is reported via simple self‐assembly strategy. The ingenious design of heterointerface‐rich architecture motivates significantly the interior self‐built‐in electric field (IEF) and high‐density electron flow, thus accelerating the charge transfer and boosting ion diffusion. As a result, the hybrids realize a high reversible specific capacity, satisfying rate capability as well as long‐term cycling stability. The in/ex situ characterizations further elucidate the stepwise intercalation‐conversion‐alloying reaction mechanism of BOC‐PA/MXene. More encouragingly, the full cell investigation further highlights its competitive merits for practical application in further PIBs. The present work not only opens the way to the design of other electrodes with an appropriate working mechanism but also offers inspiration for built‐in electric‐field engineering toward high‐performance energy storage devices.
