Abstract:Zwitterions of charge-balanced units have super-low fouling properties induced by ionic solvation, but their extensive applications in polymeric substrates are strictly constrained by current constructing strategies. A zwitterion-like, charge-balanced ultrathin layer with high antifouling capacity was covalently constructed on delicate aromatic polyamide (PA) reverse osmosis (RO) membranes via a mild and solvent-free grafting-to strategy. Two oppositely charged commercial short-chain carbonyl alkenes, 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) and methacryloxyethyltrimethylammonium chloride (DMC), were directly mixed-grafted with amino groups on PA RO membrane surface via Michael addition. Under ambient temperature and pressure, these oppositely charged compounds were assembled into a zwitterion-like, charge-balanced ultrathin layer. The dynamic fouling experiments indicated that the modified membrane exhibited strong antifouling properties and excellent permeation recovery abilities. Surface characterization revealed that the selective layer thickness and surface roughness were not measurably changed. More meaningful is that the typical ridge-and-valley surface structure and the excellent separation performance were both well preserved after modification. This opens a universal avenue to construct a zwitterion-like, ultrathin antifouling layer on the delicate polymer substrate without compromising its original matrix structure and performance, which has promising application in areas of biosensors, tissue engineering, and biomaterials.
Fluorine-Free Amphiphobic SBS/PAN Micro/Nanofiber Membrane by Integrating Click Reaction with Electrospinning for Efficient and Recyclable Air Filtration

Abstract:The membrane fouling derived from the accumulated dust pollutants and highly viscous oily particles causes irreversible damage to the filtration performance of air filters and results in a significant reduction in their service life. However, it is still challenging to construct high-efficiency and antifouling air filtration membranes with recyclable regeneration. Herein, the fluorine-free amphiphobic micro/nanofiber composite membrane was controllably constructed by integrating click chemistry reaction and electrospinning technique. Low-surface-energy fibers were constructed by a thiol-ene click chemical reaction between mercaptosilane and vinyl groups of polystyrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), combined with hydroxyl-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) during the electrospinning process. The functional air filter is then prepared by the two-layer composite strategy. Because of the advantages of liquid-like fibrous surface and micro/nanofibrous porous structure, SBS/PAN composite membrane simultaneously shows superior antifouling performances of pollutants and filtration efficiency of over 97% PM0.3 removal. More importantly, the antifouling fibrous membrane still presents a stable and efficient filtration efficiency after multiple washes. Its service life in dust filtration environments is approximately 1.7 times longer than that of the substrate membrane. This work may provide a significant reference for the design of antifouling fiber membranes and high-efficiency air filters with long life spans and reusability.

Abstract:Fouling is a common challenge to all membrane-based separation technologies. The current study demonstrated an antifouling membrane with a superhydrophilic but oleophobic (in air) characteristic, which was achieved through covalently tethering heterogeneously tailored two-dimensional layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets to a polyvinylidene fluoride membrane surface. The nanosheets were in situ grafted with alternately arranged sodium 1-dodecanesulfonate (SDS) and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) chains during preparation. Poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) was previously grafted on the membrane via plasma induced graft copolymerization as anchor sites for nanosheet binding. With a simple dip-coating operation, the surface-tailored LDH nanosheets could be bound to the membrane via cross-linking between the amine groups of APTS and carboxyl groups of PMAA. Ultimately, the long hydrophobic SDS and short hydrophilic APTS chains on the nanosheets formed a heterogeneous and infiltration selective (due to steric exclusion) surface on the membrane. As a result, the hydrophilic moieties on the membrane surface were much more accessible to water than to liquids of larger molecular size, thereby bringing about the superhydrophilic but oleophobic characteristic. The functionalization gave rise to both significantly enhanced wettability and hydrophilicity of the membrane, mainly owing to the increase of the electron donor component of surface energy (γAB−). Additionally, the functionalized membrane obtained a greater permeability without compromising its selectivity. Furthermore, as verified in both filtration tests with synthetic and practical foulant solutions, the superhydrophilic and oleophobic characteristic endowed the functionalized membrane with conspicuously greater cleaning efficiency and excellent capability in resisting irreversible fouling, suggesting promising applications in various fields.

Abstract:HYPOTHESIS:In general, microporous membranes with waterproofness, breathability, and oil-water separation performance are prepared from hydrophobic raw materials and demonstrated to exhibit an interconnected porous structure. Hence, constructing porous and gradient-structured composite membranes by integrating robust hydrophobic/lipophilic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and breathable polyurethane (PU) microporous membranes could help realize a selective separation process.EXPERIMENT:Here, novel polyvinylidene fluoride-carbon nanotube/polyurethane/polyvinylidene fluoride-carbon nanotube (PVDF-CNT/PU/PVDF-CNT) sandwich-structured microporous membranes were fabricated by sequential electrospinning. The influence of the thickness ratios of PVDF/PU/PVDF and carbon nanotube (CNT) content on the fibrous construction, porous structure, and wettability of the composite membranes was systematically studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), pore size, porosity and contact angle. Significantly, the effect of the fibrous construction, porous structure, and wettability on the waterproofness, breathability, and oil-water separation ability of the composite membranes was investigated.FINDINGS:The novel separation system proved the 'complementary effect' between the PVDF and PU membranes. Further, because of the elaborate gradient construction, superior porous structure, and robust hydrophobicity-oleophilicity, the resultant membranes exhibited moderate waterproofness (38 kPa) and excellent breathability (8.63 kg m-2 d-1), and oil-water separation, confirming that they could be promising alternatives for numerous practical applications, such as protective clothing, treatment of oil-contaminated water, and membrane distillation.

Abstract:With the rapid development of urbanization and industrialization, air pollution is increasingly harmful to life on earth. At present, purifying polluted air through functional filter materials is an effective but still challenging and important strategy. But there was the problem that the air filter protection materials are easy to get wet, which will reduce the filtering effect and cause the service life to decrease. In this study, we used PU fiber membrane prepared with electrospinning as the substrate, fluorinated silica nanoparticles (F-SNs) and quaternary ammonium salt silica particles (Q-SNs) were used as functional particles, PDMS were used as adhesive to prepare hydrophobic and anti-fouling F/Q-SNs-PU fiber membrane through coating. F/Q-SNs-PU fiber membrane exhibited excellent hydrophobic stability, excellent anti-fouling and self-cleaning ability, and filtration effect. Therefore, F/Q-SNs-PU fiber membrane can effectively alleviate the air filtration problem in high humidity environment by virtue of its excellent hydrophobic anti-fouling performance and filtering effect.

Abstract:Superamphiphobic nanofibrous membranes exhibiting robust water/oil proof and breathable performances were prepared by the combination of a novel synthesized fluorinated polyurethane (FPU) containing a terminal perfluoroalkane segment and incorporated SiO(2) nanoparticles (SiO(2) NPs). By employing the FPU/SiO(2) NPs incorporation, the hybrid membranes possess superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 165° and superoleophobicity with an oil contact angle of 151°. Surface morphological studies have indicated that the wettability of resultant membranes could be manipulated by tuning the surface composition as well as the hierarchical structures. The quantitative hierarchical roughness analysis using N(2) adsorption method has confirmed a major contribution of SiO(2) NPs on enhancing the porous structure, and a detailed correlation between the fractal dimension and amphiphobicity is proposed. Furthermore, a designed concept test shows that the as-prepared membranes could load 1.5 kg water or oil at the same time maintained an extremely high air permeability of 2 L min(-1), suggesting their use as promising materials for a variety of potential applications in protective clothing, bioseparation, water purification, tissue engineering, microfluidic systems, etc., and also provided new insight into the design and development of functional hybrid membranes based on FPU.
Sustaining Fouling Resistant Membranes: Membrane Fabrication, Characterization and Mechanism Understanding of Demulsification and Fouling-Resistance

Abstract:Antifouling performance of membranes is the key obstacle limiting their practical applications for oil/water separation. In this study, a sustaining antifouling membrane was fabricated by constructing polydopamine (PDA) micro-/nano-spheres on a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibrous membrane. The secondary PDA nano-spheres not only strengthened the bonding of primary micro-spheres with the substrate, but also diversified the hierarchical structure and chemistry. The composite showed enhanced superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity. Permeability of PAN-PDAc membrane was maintained as high as 11666 +/- 978 Lm(-2)h(-1)bar(-1) with separation efficiency of higher than 99.9% over a 2-h continuous filtration. This permeability was about 2.7 times of pristine PAN membrane (4260 +/- 430 Lm(-2)h(-1)bar(-1)). The extrusion and cutting demulsification on the confined space of PAN-PDA surface was proposed. Antifouling mechanism of the superhydrophilic membrane was first theoretically elucidated based on hydration ability and adhesion free energy with recourse to thermal analysis and Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory respectively. It was found that PDA micro-/nano-spheres mediated membrane showed strong hydration ability (higher fraction of non-freezable water) and weak adhesion towards toluene (low free energy of adhesion) compared to pristine PAN membrane. These findings would lead to a better understanding of antifouling demulsification mechanism and improved design of sustaining antifouling membranes for oil/water separation.
Engineering self-assembled 2D nano-network membranes through hierarchical phase separation for efficient air filtration

Abstract:Air pollution has garnered significant worldwide attention; however, the existing air filtration materials still suffer from issues related to monotonous structure and the inherent trade-off between PM rejection and air permeability. Herein, a spider web-inspired composite membrane with continuous monolayer structured 2D nano-networks tightly welded on nanofibers in the electrospun membrane scaffold is designed via a hierarchical phase separation strategy. The resultant biomimetic hierarchical-structured membranes possess the integrated features of hierarchical multiscale structures of 2D ultrafine networks composed of nanowires with a diameter of 31 nm self-assembled by nanoparticles, exceptional characteristics involving small average aperture, extremely low network thickness, high porosity and promising pore channel connectivity, combined with rich surface polar functional groups (3.02D dipole moment). Consequently, the composite membrane exhibits a high PM0.3 capture efficiency of 99.6 % and low pressure drop of 58.8 Pa, less than 0.06 % of atmosphere pressure, with outstanding long-term PM2.5 recycling filtration performance. The hierarchical phase separation-driven 2D nano-networks construction strategy, by virtue of their feasibility and tunability, holds great promise for widespread application across diverse membrane-related domains for air filtration.

Abstract:The development of high-performance, fully biodegradable air filtration materials has become a current research hotspot owing to their significant applications in environmental and personal protection; however, an inherent contradiction exists between the pressure drop and filtration efficiency of existing filter materials. To introduce the slippage effect into nanofiber membranes, a multiscale-structured air filtration material comprising scaffold fibers (200 nm) and functional fibers (32 nm) with superior slippage effect properties is designed using the COMSOL software to increase interfiber spacing. Ultrafine polylactic acid nanofibers (32 +/- 5 nm) doped with polymethylhydrosiloxane are designed and fabricated by electrospinning. A multiscale nanofiber structure is engineered by adjusting the diameters of various spinning units to effectively reconcile the trade-off between filtration efficiency and resistance. The membrane exhibits a small pore size (0.62 mu m), high porosity (93.21%), highly hydrophobicity (water contact angle 144.8 degrees), high PM0.3 removal efficiency (99.99%), low air resistance (68.23 Pa), and a PM0.3 filtration efficiency for PM0.3 of 95.62% after static charge decay treatment. This membrane material also exhibits complete biodegradability and filtration stability for 12 h after PM interception (>99.0%). This work provides insights into the application of polylactic acid nanofibers in fields requiring high-precision protection and filtration materials.
Silk fibroin fibers-based shape memory membrane with Janus wettability for multitiered wearable protection

Abstract:Realizing breathable shape memory fiber-based material with antibacterial and waterproof performances is important for multitiered wearable protection to address the increasing concerns of air pollution. Herein, using an alternating electrospinning-electrospraying technology, we develop a fiber-based membrane with Janus wettability based on a silk fibroin nanofibers-substrate (SFNFs), a polyurethane nanospheres-top layer (PUNSs), and a middle layer of PU nanofibers-mat with in-situ grown silver nanoparticles (PUNFs-AgNPs), which serves separately for skin contact, a self-cleaning physical barrier to resist external aerosol/bacteria (PM2.5 filtration efficiency ~ 98.1%), and a bio-barrier that can sterilize harmful particles and inhibit bacteria proliferation (> 95%). This breathable Janus film (SFNFs/PUNFs-AgNPs/PUNSs, SPAP) with an antibacterial filter shows shape memory stretchability enabled by the thermoplastic PU component, which is mechanically adaptive to human body for wearable protection. This work presents a breathable wearable material for air-filtration and anti-bacteria, promising for applications such as wound dressings, medical masks, protection suits, and multifunctional filters. Abstract:Membrane fouling is still a critical issue for the application of ultrafiltration, which has been widely used in water treatment due to its efficiency and simplicity. In order to improve the antifouling property, a new 2D material MXene was used to fabricate composite ultrafiltration membrane with the approach of in situ embedment during the phase inversion process in this study. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), water contact angle, bovine serum albumin rejection and porosity measurements were utilized to characterize the prepared membranes. Due to the hydrophilicity of the MXene, the composite membranes obtained higher hydrophilicity, confirmed by the decreased water contact angle. All the modified membranes had a high bovine serum albumin rejection above 90% while that of the pristine polysulfone membrane was 77.48%. The flux recovery ratio and the reversible fouling ratio of the membranes were also improved along with the increasing content of the MXene. Furthermore, the highest flux recovery ratio could also reach 76.1%. These indicated the good antifouling properties of MXene composite membranes. The enhanced water permeability and protein rejection and excellent antifouling properties make MXene a promising material for antifouling membrane modification.

Abstract:Membrane fouling is inevitable during nanofiltration of industrial liquids. Understanding the influence of membrane physicochemical properties and structures on its antifouling performance can guide the membrane selection and preparation. In this study, the antifouling ability of three commercial nanofiltration membranes (NF270, NFA4 and DK) was assessed using organic foulants with different charge patterns. Besides, the pristine and fouled membranes were systematically characterized. The results showed that although the negatively charged polyamide membrane had a strong antifouling ability to negatively charged substances, the fouling extent was still affected by the membrane pore size distribution. For the small foulants with positive charge, driven by electrostatic adsorption effect, they were easier to be anchored on the membrane surface with higher roughness. Due to the synergistic effect of membrane charge and roughness, the flux decay ratio increased from 5.1% for the NFA4 to 63.1% for the DK with more negative charge and highest roughness. Moreover, according to FTIR, XPS deep profiling and SEM cross-section analysis, it was found that the structure of the separation layer (e.g., single/double layer or cross-linking density in horizontal/longitudinal) closely related to its antifouling performance. Therefore, a nanofiltration membrane with narrow pore size distribution, moderate charge, smooth and hydrophilic surface is more prone to resist organic fouling formation. The outcomes of the work also offer several strategies to prepare antifouling nanofiltration membranes.

Abstract:Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)@Fe3O4 composite membranes were prepared by phase inversion, followed by crosslinking with hydrophilic silane-based prepolymers. The influences of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) on morphology, chemistry, hydrophilicity, electric charge and roughness of membrane surfaces were investigated by a number of characterization techniques. The results revealed that the dispersed Fe3O4 nanoparticles reduced the micropores of the composite membrane and maintained the membrane surface roughness. Meanwhile, the dispersed Fe3O4 enabled the membrane to capture more hydrophilic silane-based prepolymers, thereby leading to a robust, dense and zwitterionic characteristic hydration layer on the membrane surface. The reinforced hydration layer imparted the membrane surface with more stable water permeability and higher rejections to humic acid (HA), bovine serum albumin (BSA) and soybean oil during five cycles of cross-flow separation. According to the resistance-in-series model, the anti-oil-fouling mechanism of the membrane relied on manipulating the hydration layer on the membrane surface to prevent the foulants from approaching the membrane surface. The surface-immobilized Fe3O4 facilitated the hydration layer to repel HA and BSA to permeate through the membrane via chelation and adsorption, and then reduced the membrane internal fouling. Our findings provide a new strategy to construct antifouling membrane surfaces by properly tailoring the strength and thickness of the surface hydration layer.

Abstract:Membrane fouling is a major challenge for long-term oil/water separation. The incomplete degradation of organic pollutants or membrane damage exists in the common methods of membrane regeneration. Herein, a dual-responsive nanofibrous membrane with high water-in-oil emulsion separation efficiency and smart cleaning properties is reported, which shows complete restoration of its original separation performance. The pH-responsive and upper critical solution temperature (UCST)-type thermoresponsive nanofibrous membrane with a micro/nanosphere structure was developed via a one-step-blending electrospinning strategy. The membrane displays high hydrophobicity/oleophilicity at pH 7 and 25 degrees C and hydrophilicity/oleophobicity at pH 3 and 55 degrees C. As a result, it exhibits an ultrahigh permeability of 60528.76 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1) and a separation efficiency of 99.5% for water-in-D5 emulsions at room temperature (25 degrees C). Moreover, the contaminated membranes could be easily reclaimed by being rinsed with warm acidic water (pH 3 and 55 degrees C). The membrane maintained high separation performance after being used for multiple cycles, indicating its scalable application for purifying emulsified oil. This study provides a facial method of constructing membranes with multiscale hierarchical structures and a new idea for the design of recyclable oil/water separation membranes.

Abstract:Research on superhydrophobic surfaces received continued attention due to more and more widely applications of superhydrophobic materials. Two parameters have been recognized for the rational design of the super-hydrophobic materials: surface texture and chemical constitution. In this work, we fabricated composite membranes of polystyrene-block-poly (ethylene-co-butylene)-block-polystyrene (SEBS) and fluorinated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane-block-polystyrene (FPOSS-PS) using a sequential electrospinning and electrospraying approach. Composite membranes with hierarchical geometries could be achieved by adjusting the formulation and/or fabrication protocols. Incorporation of fluorinated component enhances the surface property of the composite membranes due to its ultra-low surface energy, while micron particles attached on the surface further promotes the robustness of the membrane and enhanced the cell/tissue anti-adhesion efficiency. With a simple annealing treatment, the physical crosslinking was built up between the micron particles and underlying fibers, rendering the membranes with good stability and anti-adhesion properties. These superhydrophobic membranes are anticipated to have potential applications in wound-dressing and other related areas.
Nanofibrous Membranes with Antibacterial and Thermoregulatory Functions Fabricated by Coaxial Electrospinning

Abstract:In the face of changing outdoor environments, it is necessary for us to develop advanced textiles with thermal regulation and hydrophobic properties. In order to create a fabric with both temperature control and waterproof properties, the study adjusted the ratio of polystyrene (PS) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to produce nanofiber membranes with excellent morphology and dirt resistant properties. Furthermore, the hydrophobicity of the nanofibers was further improved by adding SiO2 to the spinning solution. Based on this, a core solution of octadecane (Oct) was used to give it thermal regulation functionality through coaxial electrospinning technique. The resulting composite nanofiber membrane exhibited excellent hydrophobicity and thermal regulation performance. The measurement results obtained from Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) indicate that the maximum Oct encapsulation rate of the PS/PVDF/SiO2@Oct nanofiber membrane is 58.36%. The latent heat of the composite nanofiber membrane is 148.84 J/g, and the water contact angle (WCA) is 135 degrees. The multifunctional composite nanofiber has great potential for applications in outdoor protective clothing and outdoor electronic device protection.
Antifouling Asymmetric Block Copolymer Nanofilms via Freestanding Interfacial Polymerization for Efficient and Sustainable Water Purification

Abstract:Membrane materials that resist nonspecific or specific adsorption are urgently required in widespread applications. In water purification, inevitable membrane fouling not only limits separation performance, but also remarkably increases operation requirements, and augments extra maintenance costs and higher energy consumption. In this work, we report a freestanding interfacial polymerization (IP) fabrication strategy for in-situ creation of asymmetric block copolymer (BCP) nanofilms with antifouling properties, greatly outperforming the conventional surface post-modification approaches. The resultant asymmetric BCP nanofilms with highly-dense, highly-hydrophilic polyethylene glycol (PEG) brushes, can be readily formed via a typical IP process of a double-hydrophilic BCP composed of an antifouling PEG block and a membrane-forming multiamine block. The asymmetric BCP nanofilms have been applied for efficient and sustainable natural water purification, demonstrating extraordinary antifouling capabilities accompanied with superior separation performance far beyond commercial polyamide nanofiltration membranes. The antifouling behaviors of BCP nanofilms derived from the combined effect of the hydration layer, electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance were further elucidated by water flux and fouling resistance in combination with all-atom molecular dynamics simulation. This work opens up a new avenue for large-scale and low-cost creation of broad-spectrum, asymmetric membrane materials with diverse functional "defect-free" surfaces in real-world applications.
