Abstract:Heterointerfaces can induce dielectric polarization relaxation to remarkably boost microwave absorption performance. However, delicately engineering a homogeneous magnetic-dielectric heterostructure remains a considerable challenge. Herein, novel hierarchical Fe3O4@C microspheres have been successfully fabricated via polydopamine confinement and sequential calcination. In the product, each primary nanoparticle (Fe3O4 microsphere) is confined within a thin layer of carbon, constructing a multi-interface heterostructure. Interface engineering in such a hierarchical assembly of Fe3O4@C core-shell nanoparticles results in unique performance superiority in terms of microwave absorption compared with traditional carbon-coated Fe3O4 microspheres. The maximum reflection loss value reaches -55.4 dB, and the broad effective absorption bandwidth covers a range as wide as 9.5 GHz (8.5-18 GHz) at only 2.0 mm. Importantly, the confinement effect simultaneously results in strong magnetic coupling interactions and a well-defined charge distribution at the contacted interfaces, which ultimately enhance the magnetic loss and dielectric loss, respectively. Besides, the dielectric carbon shell with optimized thickness facilitates the spread of the magnetic flux line, leading to intensive magnetic-dielectric synergy as well as matched impedance. These results might provide a new insight into the preparation of highly efficient microwave absorbers by optimal microstructure engineering.
Hierarchically nitrogen-doped carbon hollow microspheres assembled with loose and porous magnetic carbon sheets for enhanced microwave absorption

Abstract:Combining hollow materials with magnetic particles to construct hierarchical structures favors enhancement of microwave absorption properties. However, the fabrication of the well-defined materials possessing both hollow and hierarchical features still faces a huge challenge. Herein, a facile two-step method is developed to synthesize hierarchically nitrogen-doped carbon hollow microspheres assembled with loose and porous magnetic carbon sheets. Especially, many magnetic Fe/Fe 3 C NPs covered with N -doped graphitic layers are embedded in the mesoporous N -doped carbon sheets layers. Benefited from the special structure, the optimal nitrogen-doped carbon hollow microspheres exhibit an excellent microwave absorption property with an EAB of ∼4.00 GHz at a thickness of 2.5 mm and the minimal reflection loss of −39.87 dB at a frequency of 7.76 GHz, while the filler ratio is only 10 wt% in the paraffin wax. Electromagnetic parameters analysis reveals that unique hierarchical structure and rich heterogeneous interfaces result in the enhancement of dielectric and magnetic losses as well as optimized the impedance matching. The computer simulation technology (CST) simulation further verifies the practical applicability of the optimal nitrogen-doped carbon hollow microspheres. This work provides an effective way for the efficient synthesis of hierarchical and hollow materials for microwave absorption.

Confined Transformation of Trifunctional Co2(OH)2CO3 Nanosheet Assemblies into Hollow Porous Co@N-doped Carbon Spheres for Efficient Microwave Absorption

Abstract:Carbonaceous-magnetic composites are the most appealing candidates for electromagnetic wave absorption, and creating hollow interiors and nanopores in the composites is commonly recognized as an essential strategy to reinforce their overall performances. Herein, we propose a spatial confinement strategy mediated by Co-2(OH)(2)CO3 nanosheet assemblies for achieving highly dispersed Co nanoparticles into hollow porous N-doped carbon shells (HP-Co@NCS). Systematic multi-technique characterizations indicate that the Co-2(OH)(2)CO3 nanosheet assemblies simultaneously play a trifunctional role during the synthesis, including Co source, template of the hollow interior cavities, and micro-/mesopore porogen. The chemical composition can be modulated by simply varying the ratio of Co-2(OH)(2)CO3 and carbon source (dopamine). The optimized HP-Co@NCS absorber exhibits a well-defined hollow structure and unprecedented high porosity (specific surface area of 742 m2 g-1) even with a high metallic Co content of 35.8 wt%. These profitable structural characteristics can facilitate incident EM waves penetrating the absorber's interior and promoting multiple reflections and scattering. Therefore, the HP-Co@NCS absorber exhibits efficient microwave absorption ability with a minimum reflection loss of-39.0 dB at a thin thickness of 2.5 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth up to 5.5 GHz (12.5 18.0 GHz) at a thin thickness of 2.0 mm. Abstract:Hierarchical microstructures perform increasingly vital roles in the design and preparation of high-performance microwave absorption materials because of their unique advantages. In this study, hierarchically three-dimensional CoNi/nitrogen doped porous carbon nanosheets (CoNi/N@PCN) was synthesized via an in-situ sodium chloride template strategy. The CoNi nanoparticles uniformly grow on the surface of the nitrogen doped carbon nanosheets. The obtained CoNi/N@PCN possesses hierarchical structures, including 0D CoNi nanoparticles, 2D N-doped carbon nanosheets, and 3D porous conductive carbon network. Moreover, the complex dielectric constant of CoNi/N@PCN is further adjusted to balance the impedance matching by nitrogen doping. The unique hierarchical architectures possess a large surface, various kinds of interfaces, abundant defects, and void spaces. Benefiting from these characteristics, the as-prepared CoNi/N@PCN demonstrates impressive microwave absorbing performance with the minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) value of -56.54 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.65 GHz at 2.2 mm thickness. This strategy may open a way for the extensive synthesis of porous carbon magnetic absorbers for high-performance microwave absorption absorber.
Hierarchical Magnetic Network Constructed by CoFe Nanoparticles Suspended Within "Tubes on Rods" Matrix Toward Enhanced Microwave Absorption

Abstract:Hierarchical magnetic-dielectric composites are promising functional materials with prospective applications in microwave absorption (MA) field. Herein, a three-dimension hierarchical "nanotubes on microrods," core-shell magnetic metal-carbon composite is rationally constructed for the first time via a fast metal-organic frameworks-based ligand exchange strategy followed by a carbonization treatment with melamine. Abundant magnetic CoFe nanoparticles are embedded within one-dimensional graphitized carbon/carbon nanotubes supported on micro-scale Mo2N rod (Mo2N@CoFe@C/CNT), constructing a special multi-dimension hierarchical MA material. Ligand exchange reaction is found to determine the formation of hierarchical magnetic-dielectric composite, which is assembled by dielectric Mo2N as core and spatially dispersed CoFe nanoparticles within C/CNTs as shell. Mo2N@CoFe@C/CNT composites exhibit superior MA performance with maximum reflection loss of - 53.5 dB at 2 mm thickness and show a broad effective absorption bandwidth of 5.0 GHz. The Mo2N@CoFe@C/CNT composites hold the following advantages: (1) hierarchical core-shell structure offers plentiful of heterojunction interfaces and triggers interfacial polarization, (2) unique electronic migration/hop paths in the graphitized C/CNTs and Mo2N rod facilitate conductive loss, (3) highly dispersed magnetic CoFe nanoparticles within "tubes on rods" matrix build multi-scale magnetic coupling network and reinforce magnetic response capability, confirmed by the off-axis electron holography.
Rational construction of hierarchical accordion-like Ni@porous carbon nanocomposites derived from metal-organic frameworks with enhanced microwave absorption

Abstract:Development of high-performance microwave absorption materials with a thin matching thickness, wide effective absorption bandwidth, low filler loading, and strong absorption capacity has attracted extensive scientific and technological interest and it remains a huge challenge. Here, hierarchical accordion-like carbon () nanocomposites derived from metal-organic frameworks were rationally designed and successfully developed as enhanced microwave absorption materials. It was found that the well-tuned composition (Ni, C and CNTs) and structure (laminated, porous, and core-shell characteristics) of the resultant nanocomposites led to the variation of magnetic properties, graphitization degree, and electromagnetic parameters. As expected, the hierarchical accordion-like nanocomposites with a low filler loading of 25 wt% achieved a broad effective absorption bandwidth of 6.6 GHz, a strong reflection loss of −86.9 dB with a thin thickness of 1.8 mm through the optimization of impedance matching and improvement of microwave attenuation ability. The enhanced microwave absorption was attributed to the loss synergistic effect between abundant interfacial and dipole polarization in the hierarchical architecture, to the electronic transport in the three-dimensional conductive network, and to strong magnetic coupling in Ni nanoparticles. Therefore, this work presented a tailored strategy for the development of novel hierarchical nanocomposites as enhanced microwave absorption materials.

Abstract:The rational design of hierarchical structures with multi-heterogeneous components provides a promising pathway to develop advanced absorbers, but it remains a great challenge. Herein, we demonstrate the construction of three-layered CoFe@C@MnO2 hierarchical nanocubes to address this challenge, which involved the creation of metal organic framework-derived nanocubes consisting of CoFe nanoparticles embedded within porous carbon and the growth of MnO2 nanoparticles on the nanocubes. This delicate design not only enabled the synergistic effects of the magnetic loss of the magnetic CoFe and the intrinsic dielectric losses of the dielectric materials C and MnO2 but also facilitated multiple interface polarization and appropriate impedance matching. Benefiting from these structural and compositional features, the as-synthesized CoFe@C@MnO2 nanocubes achieved a minimum reflection loss of -64 dB at 15.6 GHz with a thickness of 1.3 mm and a maximum absorption bandwidth of 9.2 GHz from 8.8 to 18 GHz for -10 dB at a thickness of 1.6 mm.
Dandelion-like Carbon Nanotube Assembly Embedded with Closely Separated Co Nanoparticles for High-Performance Microwave Absorption Materials

Abstract:Enhancing the magnetic loss capacity by microstructure design remains a considerable challenge in the microwave absorption field. Herein, a high-performance microwave absorbent is developed by dispersing a considerable amount of magnetic nanoparticles within the dandelion-like carbon nanotube assembly. A controllable fabrication method is further exploited to adjust the distribution feature of these embedded nanomagnets. In such a hierarchical composite, parts of the interaction network among the coupled closely spaced nanomagnets can be frequently broken and rebuilt to intensively dissipate the microwave energy, which is confirmed by electron holography and micromagnetic simulation for the first time. By virtue of this dynamic magnetic coupling network mechanism, the hierarchical C/Co composite acquires the first-rate microwave absorption performance. The maximum reflection loss value reaches as much as -52.9 dB (absorbance >0.99999) and the effective absorption bandwidth (absorbance >0.9) occupies the entire X band. It is believed that the above insightful mechanism provides a new opportunity to lower the density of the magnet-based microwave absorbent as much as possible. Besides, the unique method for dispersing magnetic nanoparticles also broadens the pathway to assemble the hierarchical architecture.
Rational construction of hierarchical hollow CuS@CoS2 nanoboxes with heterogeneous interfaces for high-efficiency microwave absorption materials

Abstract:Hierarchical hollow structures have received considerable attention for light weight microwave absorption materials, however, constructing and regulating hollow structures with heterogeneous interfaces still remains a great challenge. In this work, hierarchical hollow 2 nanoboxes with double shells have been designed by a template-assisted process inspired by Pearson's hard and soft acid-base principle, in which the hollow nanoboxes are composed of CuS inner shell and CoS2 nanosheets outer shell. The formation of outer Co(OH)2 nanosheets is a key factor to achieve the double shells via a "coordinating etching and precipitating" route and the etching of cubic Cu2O precursor plays an important role to stabilize the hollow nanoboxes. As absorbers, the hierarchical hollow nanoboxes exhibit high-efficiency microwave absorption attenuation because of the synergistic effects of dipolar and interfacial polarizations, multiple scatterings, hollow/core-shell structures and matched impedance. Typically, the minimum reflection loss is up to −58.6 dB at 2.5 mm when the filler loading is 20 wt% and the absorption bandwidth exceeding −10 dB is 8.2 GHz at 2.2 mm with 30 wt% filler loading. Consequently, this strategy offers a unique thought for the construction of hollow nanoboxes with double shells and the as-fabricated nanoboxes can be used as a promising candidate for microwave absorption materials with light weight and high-efficiency.
Construction of Hierarchical Yolk-Shell Co/N-Dope C@void@C@MoS2 Composites with Multiple Heterogeneous Interfaces toward Broadband Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Abstract:The synthesis of materials with a multicomponent hierarchical structure is an essential strategy for achieving high-performance electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. However, conventional design strategies face challenges in terms of the rational construction of specific architecture. In this study, we employ a combined space-restricted and hierarchical construction strategy to surface-plant MoS2 nanosheets on yolk-shell structural carbon-modified Co-based composites, leading to the development of high-performance Co/NC@void@C@MoS2 absorbers with advanced architecture. The surface-planted MoS2 nanosheets, the Co/NC magnetic yolk, and the dielectric carbon shell work together to enhance the impedance matching characteristics and synergistic loss capabilities in the composites. Experimental results indicate that Co/NC@void@C-700@MoS2 exhibited the best absorption performance with an effective absorption bandwidth of 7.54 GHz (at 2.05 mm) and a minimum reflection loss of -60.88 dB (at 1.85 mm). Furthermore, radar cross-section simulation results demonstrate that Co/NC@void@C-700@MoS2 effectively suppresses the scattering and transmission of EMWs on perfect electric conductor substrates, implying its superior practical application value. This study provides inspiration and experimental basis for designing and optimizing EMW absorption materials with hierarchical yolk-shell architecture.
Structural Engineering of Hierarchical Magnetic/Carbon Nanocomposites via In Situ Growth for High-Efficient Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Abstract:Materials exhibiting high-performance electromagnetic wave absorption have garnered considerable scientific and technological attention, yet encounter significant challenges. Developing new materials and innovative structural design concepts is crucial for expanding the application field of electromagnetic wave absorption. Particularly, hierarchical structure engineering has emerged as a promising approach to enhance the physical and chemical properties of materials, providing immense potential for creating versatile electromagnetic wave absorption materials. Herein, an exceptional multi-dimensional hierarchical structure was meticulously devised, unleashing the full microwave attenuation capabilities through in situ growth, self-reduction, and multi-heterogeneous interface integration. The hierarchical structure features a three-dimensional carbon framework, where magnetic nanoparticles grow in situ on the carbon skeleton, creating a necklace-like structure. Furthermore, magnetic nanosheets assemble within this framework. Enhanced impedance matching was achieved by precisely adjusting component proportions, and intelligent integration of diverse interfaces bolstered dielectric polarization. The obtain Fe3O4-Fe nanoparticles/carbon nanofibers/Al-Fe3O4-Fe nanosheets composites demonstrated outstanding performance with a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) value of - 59.3 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (RL ≤ - 10 dB) extending up to 5.6 GHz at 2.2 mm. These notable accomplishments offer fresh insights into the precision design of high-efficient electromagnetic wave absorption materials.
Co0.2Fe2.8O4/C composite nanofibers with designable 3D hierarchical architecture for high-performance electromagnetic wave absorption

Abstract:High-performance electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption property could be achieved by architecture design of nanomaterials. Herein, two layer hybrid Co0.2Fe2.8O4/carbon nanofibers with porous three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical structure were synthesized successfully through facile electrospinning, carbonization and mild chemical treatment. The Co0.2Fe2.8O4 particles grew along the carbon nanofibers, forming the enhanced heterogeneous interfaces and high specific areas. As expected, the EM wave absorbent showed an excellent absorbing capability. The composites achieved a maximum reflection loss (RL) of −43.45 dB at 11.1 GHz with thickness of 3.0 mm. More importantly, the effective bandwidth (RL ≤ −10dB) was 5.85 GHz, covering 30% of the entire measured bandwidth. The absorption intensity and bandwidth were superior to other typical CoFe-based composites. The intrinsic mechanism of the absorption revealed that the polarization losses, magnetic losses, magnetic natural resonance and exchanged resonance losses contributed to the high-performance microwave absorption. Moreover, good impedance matching and complex transmission paths that generated from unique porous network also played an important role. This study is expected to guide future exploration on designing and synthesizing high performance EM wave absorbents.

Hollow Engineering to Co@N‐Doped Carbon Nanocages via Synergistic Protecting‐Etching Strategy for Ultrahigh Microwave Absorption

Abstract:Rational manipulation of hollow structure with uniform heterojunctions is evolving as an effective approach to meet the lightweight and high-performance microwave absorption for metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived absorbers. Herein, a new and controlled synergistic protecting-etching strategy is proposed to construct shelled ZIF-67 rhombic dodecahedral cages using tannic acid under theoretical guidance, then hollow Co@N-doped carbon nanocages with uniform heterojunctions and hierarchical micro-meso-macropores are obtained via a pyrolysis process, which addresses the shortcomings of using sacrificing templates or corrosive agents. The outer Co@N-doped carbon shell, composed of highly dispersive core-shell heterojunctions, possesses micro-mesopores while the inner hollow macroporous cavity endows the absorbers with lightweight characteristics. Accordingly, the maximum reflection loss is -60.6 dB at 2.4 mm and the absorption bandwidth reaches 5.1 GHz at 1.9 mm with 10 wt% filler loading, exhibiting superior specific reflection loss compared with the vast majority of previous MOFs derived absorbers. Furthermore, this synergistic protecting-etching strategy provides inspiration for precisely creating a hollow void inside other MOFs crystals and broadens the desirable candidates for lightweight and high-efficient microwave absorbers.

Abstract:Owing to their immense potential in functionalized applications, tremendous interest has been devoted to the design and synthesis of nanostructures. The introduction of sufficient amount of microwaves into the absorbers on the premise that the dissipation capacity is strong enough remains a key challenge. Pursuing a general methodology to overcome the incompatibility is of great importance. There is widespread interest in designing the materials with specific architectures. Herein, the common absorber candidates were chosen to feature the hierarchical porous Fe3O4@C@Fe3O4 nanospheres. Due to the reduced skin effect (induced by low-conductivity Fe3O4 outer layer), multiple interfacial polarizations and scattering (due to the ternary hierarchical structures and nanoporous inner core) as well as the improved magnetic dissipation ability (because of multiple magnetic components), the material design enabled a promising microwave absorption performance. This study not only illustrates the primary mechanisms for the improved microwave absorption performance but also underscores the potential in designing the particular architectures as a strategy for achieving the compatibility characteristics.

Abstract:In order to prepare microwave-absorbing materials with low density and high wave absorption performance, CoFe2O4/SWCNTs composites with well-designed necklace-like structures were successfully prepared in this paper by a simple solvothermal method. CoFe2O4/SWCNTs composites with different cobalt salt contents were synthesized by adjusting the experimental parameters. The results of the relative complex permeability and relative permittivity of the samples, which were investigated by vector network analysis in the frequency range of 2 to 18 GHz, are collected to support the study of the microwave absorption characteristics of the samples. Different microsphere densities and different cobalt salt contents have obvious differences in the electromagnetic absorption properties of the composites. When the additions of FeCl3·6H2O, Co(Ac)2·4H2O, and NH4Ac were 0.432, 0.200, and 0.400 g, respectively, the best reflection loss reached −42.07 dB, and the effective absorption frequency (RL < −10 dB) ranges from 3.2 to 18 GHz. Therefore, this is a preparation strategy of CoFe2O4/SWCNTs composites with necklace structure, which has the advantages of simple process, environmental friendliness, low cost, and high stability. The unique necklace-like structure design makes the carbon nanotubes partially exposed, which is more beneficial to achieve good impedance matching and giving the CoFe2O4/SWCNTs composite excellent electromagnetic loss capability.

Hollow Engineering and Component Optimization Strategy to Construct Flower-Like Yolk-Shell Structure SiO2@Void@C@WS2 Multicomponent Nanocomposites for Microwave Absorption

Abstract:Hollow engineering plays a crucial role in enhancing interfacial polarization, which is an essential factor in microwave absorption. Herein, an in-situ growth approach was adopted to successively coating C layer and WS2 nanosheets on the surface SiO2 nanosphere. The obtained results suggested that the formed SiO2 @Void@C@WS2 multi-component nanocomposites (MCNCs) reveal a representative flower-like yolkshell structure, which were manufactured massively through a simple channel. Additionally, the obtained SiO2 @Void@C@WS2 MCNCs presented a more and more obvious yolk-shell structure and reduced WS2 content with decreasing the addition of SiO2 @C or tungsten and sulfur sources. Because of their distinctive structures and remarkable cooperative effects, the SiO2 @Void@C@WS2 displayed excellent microwave absorption performances. Through the majorization of hollow structure and WS2 , improved properties of SiO2 @Void@C@WS2 MCNCs could be acquired owing to their boosted polarization and conductive loss capabilities. Amongst, the resulting SiO2 @Void@C@WS2 MCNCs exhibited the effective absorption band and minimum reflection loss values of 5.40 GHz and -45.50 dB with matching thicknesses of 1.78 and 1.55 mm, respectively. Therefore, our findings employed hollow engineering and optimization strategies for components to design and fabricate the yolk-shell structure flower-like MCNCs, which acted as highly efficient wide-band microwave absorbing materials. Abstract:Carbon materials with multi-components and hollow structures can be used as promising candidates in microwave absorption materials, however, rational design and construction of the special structures is still hard to achieve. In this work, a hollow structural bimetallic carbon polyhedron () is synthesized by the pyrolysis of core-shell polyhedrons. Owing to the uniform distribution of Mo2C and metallic Co nanoparticles in the hollow N-doped carbon shell, the generated multi-heterogeneous interfaces are in favor of dipolar and interfacial polarization, resulting in enhanced conduction loss, matched impedance as well as multiple scatterings. Typically, with a filler loading of 30 wt%, the minimum RL of reaches −44.8 dB and the effective absorption bandwidth is as wide as 6.56 GHz with the absorber thickness of 2.5 mm, which is better than that of ZIF-8 derived N-doped carbon polyhedron and HZIF-CoMo derived bimetallic carbon polyhedron. The usage of bimetallic HZIF to assemble core-shell nanomaterials is proven to be an novel and excellent way to assembly microwave absorbers with multi-heterogeneous interfaces and hollow structures.

Abstract:Hierarchical structures with synergistic dielectric-magnetic compositions are highly desired for electromagnetic wave absorption and interference shielding applications. Fabricating lightweight and high-performance electromagnetic protection composites with additional functions are demanded to suppress severe electromagnetic radiation and interference pollution. Herein, a unique three-dimensional hierarchical structure consisting of 1D multi-walled carbon nanotubes anchored on 1D core-sheath microrods are rationally proposed via electrostatic self-assembly and hydrothermal strategy as well as subsequent thermal-catalysis treatment. The multi-walled carbon nanotubes encapsulated with magnetic CoNi nanoparticles are immobilized onto core-sheath microrods matrix, constructing effective 1D/1D electron migration bridges and the uniformly dispersed magnetic component to facilitate magnetic coupling effect. Consequently, profiting from the optimized impedance matching, enhanced conduction loss, dielectric polarization, and magnetic loss, the as-prepared sample shows an outstanding absorption capacity with reflection loss value of −56.8 dB and X-band full absorption. When used as electromagnetic shielding materials, the composites exhibit exceptional electromagnetic interference shielding properties. In addition, the upgraded mechanical strength, remarkable voltage-driven Joule heating and superhydrophobic properties endow the absorbers with multi-scenario adaptability and long life-time applications. This work provides well-designed hierarchical structures for high-performance electromagnetic absorbing and shielding with the great prospect of multifunctional applications.
