Abstract:As an important component of transportation fuels, toluene has little reactivity in the low temperature regime. However, the low temperature reactivity of toluene may be enhanced by the reaction of other reactive components (e.g., n-heptane) in fuel mixtures. This work examines low temperature oxidation of toluene in jet stirred reactor oxidation of an n-heptane/toluene mixture (1:1 in mole, 50 0-80 0 K, phi= 0.5, tau = 2.0 s, p = 1 bar). Two measurement techniques, time of flight molecular beam mass spectrometry using synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet radiation as the photon ionization source and gas chromatography mass spectrometry, were applied to identify and measure 32 species, including four polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and oxygenated PAH (OPAH). Numerical simulations using the latest kinetic model from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory predicted the mole fractions of fuel molecules and small intermediates well, but under-predicted the mole fractions of oxygenated aromatics (phenol, benzyl alcohol, and cresol). The identification of benzyl peroxide-an important intermediate-supported the proposed formation pathways for the identified aromatics. Model analysis highlighted the influence of H-atom abstraction, OH/H radical ipso substitution, and OH addition reactions of toluene on the formation of phenol, benzyl alcohol, and cresol, which may further grow to OPAH molecules by the addition of benzyl radical from H-atom abstraction of toluene. Abstract:As a representative aromatic component of practical fuels, understanding the low temperature chemistry of 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene under the reaction environment of fuel mixtures is necessary to improve the ignition and combustion process. In this work, low temperature oxidation of 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene was examined in a jet stirred reactor with reactants of n-heptane and 1,2,4-trimethybenzene in a fuel mixture (1:1 in mole, 500-800K, phi = 0.5, tau = 2.0s, p = 1bar). Chemical species and their mole fraction evolution with reaction temperatures were recorded by the time of flight molecular beam mass spectrometer using synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet radiation as photon ionization source. Molecular structures of 56 species were identified by comparing the species ionization energies and the photonionization efficiency curves. 25 chemical formula of monocyclic oxygenated aromatics and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAH) are detected, and 12 of them are identified. Some of the OPAHs are more toxic than the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, indicating the importance of revealing their formation pathways in low temperature oxidation of aromatics. Numerical simulations using the latest kinetic model from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory well predict the mole fractions of the reactants and most intermediates, but many monocyclic oxygenated aromatics and OPAHs are missing. The detection and identification of key monocyclic oxygenated aromatics (e.g., peroxides, aldehydes, dialdehydes, and ketohydroperoxides of 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene) provide important clues to unravel the low temperature oxidation pathways of alkylated aromatics like 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene. For monocyclic oxygenated aromatics and OPAHs that are missing in the kinetic model, potential formation pathways were proposed based on the molecular structure information, which might be useful for future kinetic model development.

Abstract:A comprehensive experimental and kinetic study of 2,4,4-trimethyl-1-pentene oxidation was conducted in this work. Oxidation in JSR was investigated at the temperature range of 675-1200 K and equivalence ratios of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 under atmospheric pressure. The high-level quantum calculation was conducted on DLPNO-CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ//M06-2X/6-311G(d,p) level to get some rate coefficients of high accuracy and choose important pathway. Temperature and pressure-dependent rate coefficients were obtained by solving master equation and RRKM theory. A detailed chemical kinetic model for 2,4,4-trimethyl-1-pentene was developed based on the high-level quantum calculation and validated against the mole fraction data measured in JSR in this work. Available experimental data including ignition delay times and laminar flame speeds in our previous work were also used for the validation of this model. Reaction pathway analysis and sensitivity analysis were performed using the Modified model. The results demonstrate the significance of H abstraction reactions in a wide range of temperature, while fuel unimolecular decomposition reaction are only dominant at high temperature. In addition, at low temperature, O-2 addition to octyl radical reactions are more important than radical decomposition and isomerization reactions. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis indicates that H abstraction reactions of fuel and isobutene have a strong inhibiting effect on low temperature reactivity. (C) 2019 The Combustion Institute. Abstract:Thermal hazards and initial decomposition mechanisms of di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP), tert-butyl cumyl peroxide (TBCP), tert-butyl peroxy benzoate (TBPB) and tert-butyl peroxy-2-ethylhexanoate (TBPEH) were comprehensively studied. Activation energies of the four tert-butyl organic peroxides (TBOPs) were obtained by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) experiments and kinetic analysis methods. Adiabatic thermal decomposition characteristic parameters were obtained by accelerating rate calorimeter (ARC) and thermal risk was evaluated by matrix assessment. Thermal decomposition products were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) experiments and decomposition pathways were proposed according to the analytical results. The energy of each step of the proposed pathways was calculated by density functional theory (DFT) method. The results indicated that all of the four TBOPs were divided into class III unacceptable hazard. Acetone was the main decomposition product of the four TBOPs. The most likely decomposition step to generate acetone was that the tert-butane oxygen radical detached a methyl. The main pathway was determined by comparing the energy barrier of rate-determining step. This work provided helpful suggestions for the safe application of the four TBOPs in the practical chemical process.
New Insights Into Thermal Decomposition Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Oxyradicals

Abstract:Thermal decompositions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) oxyradicals on various surface sites including five-membered ring, free-edge, zigzag, and armchair have been systematically investigated by using ab initio density functional theory B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) basis set. The calculation based on Huckel theory indicates that PAHs (3H-cydopenta[a]anthracene oxyradical) with oxyradicals on a five-membered ring site have high chemical reactivity. The rate coefficients of PAH oxyradical decomposition were evaluated by using RiceRamspergerKasselMarcus theory and solving the master equations in the temperature range of 15002500 K and the pressure range of 0.110 atm. The kinetic calculations revealed that the rate coefficients of PAH oxyradical decomposition are temperature-, pressure-, and surface site-dependent, and the oxyradical on a five-membered ring is easier to decompose than that on a six-membered ring. Four-membered rings were found in decomposition of the five-membered ring, and a new reaction channel of PAH evolution involving four-membered rings is recommended.

Abstract:Low to moderate temperature oxidation has been a vital topic in the combustion chemistry due to its critical role in controlling the combustion characteristics such as autoignition and pollutant emissions. Low temperature oxidation kinetics of alkanes and oxygenated biofuels have been widely explored, while that of branched aromatics is poorly understood. This work aims to investigate the low to moderate temperature oxidation kinetics of 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene (TMB, C9H12), which is a multi-branched alkylbenzene with weak low temperature oxidation reactivity. To enhance the low temperature oxidation reactivity of TMB, dimethyl ether (DME) was added to efficiently provide chain initiators. The oxidation experiment of TMB/DME mixture was performed with an atmospheric jet stirred reactor coupled with synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet radiation photoionization mass spectrometry. The negative temperature coefficient (NTC) behavior, as well as featured aromatic intermediates, especially phenyl hydroperoxides and unexpected highly oxygenated molecules (HOMs), were observed in the experiment. The detection of these fingerprint aromatic intermediates provide crucial evidence for revealing the low to moderate oxidation kinetics of TMB. In addition, a kinetic model was developed to provide in-depth kinetic analysis. The results demonstrate that the active chain initiators produced from DME oxidation trigger the low temperature chain-branching reactions of TMB. The chain recycling process is further sustained due to the regeneration of active intermediates such as phenyl hydroperoxides and •OH radicals. Aromatic intermediates with chemical compositions of C9H12Ox and C9H10Ox were measured and identified to be key indicators for the low temperature chemistry of TMB. In particular, the aromatic HOMs (C9H12O6 and C9H10O5) are fingerprint intermediates produced from the third O2 addition and subsequent reactions of TMB. Besides, the sensitivity analysis indicates that the interaction kinetics between TMB and DME by sharing the highly sensitive reactions of hydroperoxides and •OH radicals. The present work extends the conceptual reaction schemes proposed in alkanes towards branched aromatics, especially sequential O2 addition reactions that contributing to the formation of phenyl hydroperoxides and HOMs.
Effects of Oxygen-Containing Substituents on Pyrolysis Characteristics of Β-O-4 Type Model Compounds

Abstract:In order to uncover the influence of oxygen-containing functional groups on the pyrolysis characteristics of beta-O-4 type model compounds, in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared pyrolysis and pyroprobe-GC-MS were used to study the migration patterns of functional groups and the specific pyrolysis product distributions with changing temperature. The results showed that the initial temperature of phenolic hydroxy production was 300 degrees C, and peaks corresponding to this increased gradually in intensity in 1-benzyl-2-(2-methoxy-phenol)-ethanol, while this product did not begin appearing until 600 degrees C in 1-ethyl-benzene-2-(2-methoxy-phenol). The intensities of the CH4 peaks were similar in all three samples, but the CO2 absorption peak was significantly lower in 1-(4-methoxy-phenoxy)-2-(2-methoxy-phenol)-ethanol. In addition, alpha-OH was found to promote the generation of aryl-ketone products. The 4-methoxy-styrene contents of 1-ethyl-benzene-2-(2-methoxy-phenol) and 1-(4-methoxy-phenoxy)-2-(2-methoxy-phenol)-ethanol at 500 degrees C were 36.1% and 31.3%, respectively, higher than the styrene content of 1-benzy1-2-(2-methoxy-phenol)-ethanol (26.3%). The content of acetophenone was only 0.3% in 1-ethyl-benzene-2-(2-methoxy-phenol), but the yields of acetophenone and 4-methoxy-acetophenone were 16.7% and 19.6% in 1-benzyl-2-(2-methoxy-phenol)-ethanol and 1-(4-methoxy-phenoxy)-2-(2-methoxy-phenol)-ethanol, respectively. The Cool-Flame Chemistry of Tetrahydropyran: Insights into Oxygenated Heterocyclic Ring Dynamics

Abstract:The oxidation of tetrahydropyran (THP) was investigated in two atmospheric jet-stirred reactors over temperatures of 450-900 K and equivalence ratios of 0.25-1.0. Utilizing synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry (SVUV-PIMS) and gas chromatography (GC) methods, we qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed dozens of intermediates, including C1-C4 carbonyl compounds, conjugated olefins, cyclic ethers, and reactive hydroperoxides. This comprehensive analysis provided insights into the cool flame chemistry of THP. For the first time, we observed remarkable low-temperature oxidation reactivity and negative temperature coefficient (NTC) behavior during THP oxidation. Quantum chemistry calculations, including adiabatic ionization energy and appearance potential energy calculations, were performed to identify reaction products. Additionally, energy barrier analysis of key reactions allowed an exploration of the effects of the ether group in intramolecular H-transfer. Our proposed model introduces a conformational-dependent THP oxidation submechanism, enhancing predictability and highlighting the intricate low-T chemistry of THP. Rigorous validation against current and literature experimental data across diverse conditions demonstrated high accuracy. We found that the ether group in the heterocycle ring can enhance C-H bond energy at its meta-sites and weaken C-H bond energy at its ortho-sites of key radicals (e.g., ROO, OOQOOH). In the low-T region, beta-tetrahydropyranyl preferentially undergoes chain inhibition, while chain-branching reactions become more favorable for reaction sequences originating from alpha- and gamma-tetrahydropyranyl. With increasing temperature, the ring-opening of alpha- and beta-tetrahydropyranyl radicals becomes more competitive, leading to a pronounced NTC behavior in THP oxidation.

Abstract:Organic peroxides (OPs) readily demonstrate oxidising and self-reactive characteristics that can easily cause fire and explosion. Information regarding the thermal stability and other properties of OPs should be provided to industries that use these materials to avoid unexpected thermal decomposition in the workplace. The target substance in this study, 1,1-di-tert-butyl peroxy-3,3,5-trimethyl cyclohexane (TMCH), is commonly used in the chemical industry, and scholars have considered its applications in the aerospace sector in the last two decades. Because of different conditions in the chemical and aerospace industry, parameters measured under the previous conditions leave unforeseen thermal risks. The thermal behaviour and runaway pathway of TMCH, especially under adiabatic conditions, were investigated using experimental and theoretical computation methodologies. Differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analyser, and adiabatic accelerating calorimeter were applied for the thermokinetic constants of TMCH. Experimental results indicated that TMCH could release heat and gas when decomposed, with a high potential explosion hazard. Molecular simulation calculations can compensate for the measurement restrictions of instruments. The peroxy bond dissociation energy of TMCH was amended by basis set superposition error correction calculations. The analysis determined the thermal runaway reaction pathway of TMCH and evaluated the formation mechanism of the transition state defined by the intrinsic reaction coordinate. The main reason for TMCH mass loss caused by heating was the release of CO2 and ethane gas. This paper confirmed experimental results by molecular simulation with thermodynamic constants. The study results can be used as a reference for the loss prevention and control of TMCH in more potential engineering applications.

Abstract:To improve the understanding of low temperature oxidation of methyl cyclohexane, the potential energy surfaces for O2 addition to two of its radicals (tcy-C6H10(*)CH3 with a tertiary radical site and ortho-cy-C6H10(*)CH3 with a secondary radical site in the ortho position to the methyl substitution) have been investigated by high level quantum chemical calculations. The reaction kinetics was studied by the ab initio transition state theory based on master equation methodology. The relationship between low temperature oxidation reactivity and molecular structures was explored, typically in terms of the barrier heights of 1,5 H-shift for peroxy radicals. The computed phenomenological rate constants reveal that the ROO stabilization dominates the fates of two methyl cyclohexyl radicals reacting with O2 at pressures higher than 1atm over the studied temperature range. The balance between ROO stabilization, HO2 elimination, QOOH stabilization, and OH formation was further revealed by branching ratios of these four types of reactions. This study extends kinetic data for cyclic alkanes oxidation in a wide range of pressure and temperature.
Developing the Low‐Temperature Oxidation Mechanism of Cyclopentane: an Experimental and Theoretical Study

Abstract:At present, the reactivity of cyclic alkanes is estimated by comparison with acyclic hydrocarbons. Due to the difference in the structure of cycloalkanes and acycloalkanes, the thermodynamic data obtained by analogy are not applicable. In this study, a molecular beam sampling vacuum ultraviolet photoionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MB-VUV-PI-TOFMS) was applied to study the low-temperature oxidation of cyclopentane (CPT) at a total pressure range from 1-3 atm and low-temperature range between 500 and 800 K. Low-temperature reaction products including cyclic olefins, cyclic ethers, and highly oxygenated intermediates (e. g., ketohydroperoxide KHP, keto-dihydroperoxide KDHP, olefinic hydroperoxides OHP and ketone structure products) were observed. Further investigation of the oxidation of CPT - electronic structure calculations - were carried out at the UCCSD(T)-F12a/aug-cc-pVDZ//B3LYP/6-31+ G(d,p) level to explore the reactivity of O-2 molecules adding sequentially to cyclopentyl radicals. Experimental and theoretical observations showed that the dominant product channel in the reaction of CPT radicals with O-2 is HO2 elimination yielding cyclopentene. The pathways of second and third O-2 addition - the dissociation of hydroperoxide - were further confirmed. The results of this study will develop the low-temperature oxidation mechanism of CPT, which can be used for future research on accurately simulating the combustion process of CPT.
Reactions of Β-Hydroxypropyl Radicals with O2 on the HOC3H6OO• Potential Energy Surfaces: A Theoretical Study

Abstract:Although addition reactions of β-hydroxypropyl radicals with O2 are important steps in the reaction pathways of propylene oxidation at low temperature, there is a lack of available accurate rate constants for these reactions in the literature. To obtain complete reaction channels and relatively accurate rate constants over a wide range of temperatures and pressures, a systematic method, which combines the high level ab initio calculation, the conventional transition state theory (TST), the variational transition state theory (VTST) and Rice-Ramsberger-Kassel-Marcus/Master-Equation theory (RRKM/ME), was used to investigate these reactions. The CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ method was applied to calculate potential energy surfaces. High-pressure limit rate constants of barrierless reactions and those reactions with tight transition states were obtained using the VTST and the TST, respectively. RRKM/ME theory was used to compute rate constants in the fall-off range for pressure-dependent reactions. Take CC•COH as an example, the peroxy adduct of CC•COH with O2 can further react to form more stable products, and subsequent reactions include H-shift reactions, HO2 elimination reactions, OH elimination reactions and Waddington reaction. In these reactions, Waddington reaction is one of the most competitive advantage paths, as it has the lowest barrier. This conclusion is similar to that of those reactions about O2 with products from OH addition to ethylene or isobutene. Rate constants of relevant reactions were fitted to the form of a modified Arrhenius expression, and were implemented into the existing mechanism to simulate concentration profiles of main species of propylene oxidation in a jet-stirred reactor. The results show that predicted results of the revised mechanism are closer to the experimental data than those of the original mechanism. Our calculated rate constants over a wide range of temperatures and pressures for these reactions are transferable and can be applied to a wider range of oxidation conditions.

Abstract:This paper explores the low-temperature (low-T) oxidation chemistry of 2,4,4-trimethyl-1-pentene (IC8D4, diisobutylene) by using jet-stirred reactor (JSR) experiments of both IC8D4/dimethyl ether (DME) mixture and pure IC8D4 at near atmospheric pressure and low temperatures. Oxidation species are measured using synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry (SVUV-PIMS), gas chromatography (GC) and GC combined with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). It is found that the oxidation of pure IC8D4 at atmospheric pressure presents negligible low-T reactivity and negative temperature coefficient (NTC) behavior, and that the oxidation reactivity of IC8D4/DME mixture is lower than that of butene/DME mixtures previously studied. A kinetic model for low-T IC8D4/DME oxidation is developed from recent oxidation models of IC8D4 and DME. Thermodynamic data of IC8D4 and key species in its sub-mechanism are obtained from theoretical calculations in this work, while rate constants of critical reactions are updated from recent theoretical calculation studies in literature. Based on the modeling analysis, four main pathways are found to be responsible for the consumption of IC8D4 at low temperatures. Among them, the first three pathways initiated by H addition, OH addition and H abstraction on allylic carbon sites are similar to those in 1-butene/DME and isobutene/DME oxidation. These three pathways are mainly responsible for promoting or retaining OH formation. The fourth pathway initiated by H abstraction on the alkyl carbon site differs from the other three in that it is only important in IC8D4/DME oxidation while not important in butenes/DME oxidation. This fourth pathway incorporates stepwise O2 addition and cycloaddition reaction sequences, which can promote and inhibit OH formation, respectively. The increasing contribution of this fourth pathway in IC8D4/DME oxidation reduces its reactivity compared to that of butenes/DME oxidation.

Chemical Insights into the Multi-Regime Low-Temperature Oxidation of Di-N-propyl Ether: Jet-stirred Reactor Experiments and Kinetic Modeling

Abstract:To further understand the combustion characteristics and the reaction pathways of acyclic ethers, the oxidation of di-n-propyl ether (DPE) was investigated in a jet-stirred reactor (JSR) combined with a photoionization molecular-beam mass spectrometer. The experiments were carried out at near-atmospheric pressure (700 Torr) and over a temperature range of 425-850 K. Based on the experimental data and previous studies on ether oxidation, a new kinetic model was constructed and used to interpret the oxidation chemistry of DPE. In DPE oxidation, a high reactivity at low temperatures and two negative temperature coefficient (NTC) zones were observed. These behaviors are explained in this work by taking advantage of the obtained species information and the modeling analyses: the two NTC zones are caused by the competition of chain branching and termination reactions of the fuel itself and specific oxidation intermediates, respectively. Furthermore, the general requirements to have double-NTC behavior are discussed. A variety of crucial fuel-specific C-6 species, such as ketohydroperoxides and diones, were detected in the species pool of DPE oxidation. Their formation pathways are illuminated based on rate of-production (ROP) analyses. Propanal was identified as the most abundant small molecule intermediate, and its related reactions have an important impact on the oxidation process of DPE. Both acetic acid and propionic acid were detected in high concentrations. A new formation pathway of propionic acid is proposed and incorporated into the kinetic model to achieve a more accurate prediction for propionic acid mole fractions. Abstract:Theoretical investigations on the kinetics of pentan-2-ol radical decomposition and isomerization reactions have been carried out in this work, together with the thermochemistry data calculations for important species involved in the reaction process. The B2PLYPD3/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory was used to optimize the geometries of all of the reactants, transition states, products and also the hindered rotor treatment for lower frequency modes. Single-point energies of all species are determined at the ROCCSD(T) level using the cc-PVQZ and cc-pVTZ which were extrapolated to the complete basis set limit (CBS). RRKM/Master Equation has been solved to calculate the pressure- and temperature-dependent rate coefficients for all channels in the pressure range of 0.01–100 atm over 300–2000 K. Pressure and temperature dependent branching fractions of key species produced from different pentan-2-ol radicals shows that 1- and 2-pentene are important bimolecular products. The kinetics and thermochemistry data for the title reactions has been used in the part II of this work for model development for pentan-2-ol oxidation.
Probing the Reaction of Propargyl Radical with Molecular Oxygen by Synchrotron VUV Photoionization Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:Self-reaction of propargyl (C3H3) radical is the main pathway to benzene, the formation of which is the rate-controlling step toward the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and soot. Oxidation of C3H3 is a promising strategy to inhibit the formation of hazardous PAHs and soot. In the present study, we studied the C3H3 + O2 reaction from 650 to 1100 K in a laminar flow reactor and identified the intermediates and products by synchrotron VUV photoionization mass spectrometry. 2-Propynal, ethenone, formaldehyde, CO, CO2, C2H2, C2H4, and C3O2 were identified. Among them, 2-propynal, ethenone, and formaldehyde provided direct evidence for the branching reaction of C3H3 + O2 → HCCCHO + OH, C3H3 + O2 → H2CCO + CHO, and C3H3 + O2 → H2CO + CHCO, respectively. Potential energy surface calculation and mechanistic analysis of the C3O2 formations implied that C3H3 + O2 → CCCHO + H2O and C3H3 + O2 → HCCCO + H2O could occur, despite lacking direct observations of CCCHO and HCCCO radicals. The formation of ethenone and CO suggested the occurrence of the two CO elimination channels. We incorporated these validated reactions and the corresponding rate coefficients in the kinetic model of NUIGMech1.3, and the simulation showed obvious improvements toward the measured mole fractions of C3H3 and H2CCO, suggesting that the new C3H3 + O2 reaction channels were crucial in the overall combustion modeling of the important intermediate propyne (C3H4).

Abstract:Methacrolein is a typical alpha, beta-unsaturated aldehyde in the combustion of various hydrocarbons and oxy-genated biofuels. The oxidation behavior of fuels that contain resonant C = C and CHO groups in the molecular structure has not been well established in the literature. Understanding the effects of these functional groups on oxidation chemistry is also significant in developing a comprehensive core mech-anism. In this work, the oxidation of methacrolein is studied in a jet-stirred reactor at atmospheric pressure at temperatures ranging from 475 to 875 K, employing synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet pho-toionization mass spectrometry technology to identify and quantify the intermediates. A kinetic model is developed following our previous works on trans-crotonaldehyde and examined against the present experimental datasets. Based on experimental observations and modeling analyses, the crucial pathways governing the oxidation reactivities are illustrated. A new pathway is proposed to interpret theformation of ketene during the oxidation process of methacrolein and trans-crotonaldehyde. Furthermore, the effects of molecular structures on the oxidation reactivities are discussed for methacrolein, trans-crotonaldehyde, n-butanal, and isobutanal. Hydrogen abstractions from the-CHO group dominate the initial fuel con-sumption for the four fuels producing R-CO radicals. The different R radicals produced from R-CO radicals' dissociation subsequently influence the oxidation reactivities. (c) 2022 The Combustion Institute. Published by Elsevier Inc. Characterization of Cool Flame Products During the Low Temperature Oxidation of N-Pentylbenzene

Abstract:Radical chain recycling reactions represent a general topic in the chemistry of combustion, atmosphere, polymerization and so on. The nature and amount of OH radicals that generated by hydroperoxides during the oxidation of alkanes have been proven to drive the overall reactivity by enhancing the chain recycling steps. While low temperature oxidation kinetics of alkanes have been widely investigated, the comprehensive intermediates distribution during the low temperature oxidation of n-alkylbenzenes remains unexplored. This work selects n-pentylbenzene as a simple representative to investigate the low temperature oxidation kinetics of nalkylbenzenes, especially intermediates and reactions that control the reactivity. The experiments were performed with a jet-stirred reactor coupled with the synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet radiation photoionization mass spectrometry (SVUV-PIMS). Around 70 intermediates, including phenyl hydroperoxides and highly oxygenated molecules (HOMs) were detected. By combining theoretical calculations and kinetic analysis, potential compositions and structures of key intermediates were identified and categorized into groups by their characteristic molecular formulae and chemical functionalities, such as C11H16On, C11H14On, C11H10On. Fingerprint hydroperoxides, including phenyl alkyl hydroperoxides, ketohydroperoxides, olefinic hydroperoxides, ketodihydroperoxides, were revealed to be formed from the characteristic first, second and third O2 addition and sequential reactions. These hydroperoxides play a dominant role in driving the low temperature oxidation reactivity by generating active OH radicals. The present experimental evidence, including the negative temperature coefficient behavior of n-alkylbenzenes as well as featured HOMs from the third O2 addition, extend the conceptual reaction schemes proposed in alkanes towards the oxidation of n-alkylbenzenes.

Abstract:We carried out a theoretical study on geometries, relative energies of stationary points, and reaction rate constants for ethyl + O2, propyl + O2, and butyl + O2 reactions, which are important reactions in the low-temperature oxidation of corresponding alkanes. Geometries with CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ for the ethyl + O2 system are adopted as the benchmark to choose a proper exchange-correlation functional for geometry optimization. Our results show that B3LYP with 6-311+G(d,p) can provide reliable structures for this system, and structures of the other two systems are determined with this functional. The performances of the explicitly correlated CCSD(T)-F12a and the locally correlated DLPNO-CCSD(T) methods on barrier heights and reaction energies are evaluated by comparing their results with those of CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVQZ for the ethyl + O2 system. Our results indicate that reliable energy differences for this system are achieved with CCSD(T)-F12a using the cc-pVDZ-F12 basis set, and this method is employed in calculating single-point energies for the other two systems. The single-reference equation-of-motion spin-flip coupled-cluster method is adopted to obtain the potential energy surface of the barrierless reaction C2H5· + O2 → CH3CH2OO·, and the results are compared with those using broken-symmetry density functional theory and the Morse potential. Differences between energies with these methods are <1.6 kcal/mol, but the difference in the rate constants could be sizable at temperatures <500 K, and rate constants obtained in this work are reliable only for temperatures >500 K. Pressure-dependent rate constants for these reactions are determined using the Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus/Master equation method. The obtained reaction energies, barrier heights, and rate constants could be valuable for reactions between the large alkane radical and O2, which are important in the low-temperature combustion of fuels such as kerosene and gasoline.

Abstract:Mechanisms of propylene oxidation and spectral identification of active intermediates over the Bi–molybdate catalyst have been investigated using in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) in combination with probe molecules. The results show that the exact IR position of allyl species is at the wavenumber of 1454cm−1, which resolves the long-term disagreement about assignment of allyl species. Mechanisms of propylene oxidation are perfected by proposing the mechanisms of side reactions: firstly, acetone precursor is formed via enolic species by oxidation and desorbed as acetone; carbon dioxide is then transformed via such species as formate, carboxylate, and carbonate on the catalyst surface except for the gas-phase reaction. Additionally, the mechanism of the main reaction was also verified.
