Abstract:Transition metal (TM)-catalysed directed hydroboration of aliphatic internal olefins which facilitates the construction of complex alkylboronates is an essential synthetic methodology. Here, an efficient method for the borylation of cyclopropanes involving TM-catalysed directed C-C activation has been developed. Upon exposure to neutral Rh(i)-catalyst systems, N-Piv-substituted cyclopropylamines (CPAs) undergo proximal-selective hydroboration with HBpin to provide valuable gamma-amino boronates in one step which are otherwise difficult to synthesize by known methods. The enantioenriched substrates can deliver chiral products without erosion of the enantioselectivities. Versatile synthetic utility of the obtained gamma-amino boronates is also demonstrated. Experimental and computational mechanistic studies showed the preferred pathway and the origin of this selectivity. This study will enable the further use of CPAs as valuable building blocks for the tunable generation of C-heteroatom or C-C bonds through selective C-C bond activation.

Abstract:The regioselective derivatization of the monocarba-closo-dodecaborate anion via catalytic B-H bond activation is reported. Amide directing groups in combination with rhodium and iridium catalysts allowed for the direct functionalization of cage boron vertices. Products comprising B-C, B-N and B-Cl bonds were synthesized. As a key intermediate of the B-H activation step, an iridium complex with a direct B-Ir interaction was isolated and fully characterized by spectroscopic methods as well as X-ray crystallography.

Abstract:Because of the inherent difficulty in differentiating two olefins, the development of metal-catalyzed asymmetric cyclization of 1,6-dienes remains challenging. Herein, we describe the first rhodium(III)-catalyzed asymmetric borylative cyclization of cyclohexadienone-tethered mono-, 1,1di-, and (E)-1,2-disubstituted alkenes (1,6-dienes), affording optically pure cis-bicyclic skeletons bearing three or four contiguous stereocenters with high yields (25-93%), and excellent diastereoselectivities (>20:1 dr) and enantioselectivities (90-99% ee). This mild catalytic approach is generally compatible with a wide range of functional groups, which allows several facile conversions of the cyclization products. Furthermore, on the basis of our SAESI-MS experiment and computational study, a Rh(I)/(III) catalytic cycle is proposed in this tandem reaction, and the Rh(I) active species catalyzes the overall transformation via sequential oxidative addition of B(2)pin(2), olefin insertion, cyclizing conjugate addition, and reductive elimination. The irreversible conjugate addition determines the overall regioselectivity of borylative cyclization, and the ring strain favors the formation of 5,6-bicyclic structure. This highlights the control of ring strain in diene cyclizations, which provides a useful basis for future reaction designs.

Abstract:AbstractThe rhodium(I)‐catalyzed C−C bond activation reaction of siloxyvinylcyclopropanes with diazoesters demonstrates a novel mode of C−C bond cleavage of siloxyvinvylcyclopanes. The alkene products were obtained as single E‐configured isomers in good yields. A σ,η3‐allyl rhodium complex, which has been previously proposed as the key intermediate in rhodium(I)‐catalyzed cycloaddition of vinylcyclopropanes, has been isolated and characterized by X‐ray crystallography.

Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:1,2,3-Trisubstituted closo-dodecaborates with B-O, B-N, and B-C bonds as well as a fused borane oxazole ring have been synthesized by rhodium-catalyzed direct cage B-H alkenylation and annulation of ureido boranes in the first reported example of regioselective B-H bond functionalization of the [B12H12](2-) cage by transition-metal catalysis. This reaction proceeded at room temperature under ambient conditions and exhibited excellent selectivity for efficient monoalkenylation with good functional-group tolerance. The urea moiety enabled B-H activation by acting as a directing group, was incorporated in the oxazole ring in situ, and also avoided multiple alkenylation. A possible mechanism is proposed on the basis of the isolation of a rhodium agostic intermediate and control experiments.

Abstract:closo-Boranes and closo-carboranes, clusters with a closed-cage structure, exhibit remarkable inertness and are unique components of products with applications in areas such as medicinal chemistry, fluorescence and materials science. Herein, we report the first transition metal-catalyzed functionalization of the mono-closo-decaborate cluster [1-CB9H10]- by regioselective B-H activation. Using terminal alkenes bearing a wide range of functional groups, dehydrogenative coupling under mild conditions leads to B2/3-dialkenylated products, as verified by X-ray crystallography and NMR studies. This substitution pattern has not been accessible by other methods and enables the straightforward synthesis of new derivatives of the {CB9} cluster.

Abstract:Decarbonylative borylation of carboxylic acids is reported. Carbon electrophiles are generated directly after reagent-enabled decarbonylation of the in situ accessible sterically-hindered acyl derivative of a carboxylic acid under catalyst controlled conditions. The scope and the potential impact of this method are demonstrated in the selective borylation of a variety of aromatics (>50 examples). This strategy was used in the late-stage derivatization of pharmaceuticals and natural products. Computations reveal the mechanistic details of the unprecedented C-O bond activation of carboxylic acids. By circumventing the challenging decarboxylation, this strategy provides a general synthetic platform to access arylpalladium species for a wide array of bond formations from abundant carboxylic acids. The study shows a powerful combination of experiment and computation to predict decarbonylation selectivity.
Oxidative Addition Promoted C–C Bond Cleavage in Rh-Mediated Cyclopropenone Activation: A DFT Study

Abstract:Computational characterization of the oxidation addition promoted in rhodium-catalyzed cyclopropenone activation and conversion via quinolyl-, pyridyl-, and nitrone-directed C-H activation is presented. Our theoretical studies found that a common catalytic cycle for these reactions starts with Rh(III)-mediated concerted metalation-deprotonation or electrophilic deprotonation to afford the aryl-Rh(III) intermediate. Oxidative addition of cyclopropenone to aryl-Rh(III) then gives a cyclorhoda(V)butanone intermediate, leading to the cleavage of the cyclopropene moiety through a concerted three-membered cyclic transition state. Subsequent reductive elimination of the intermediate generates a target C(aryl)-C(acyl) bond. The final product is produced by further transformations with concomitant regeneration of active Rh(III) catalyst. The previously proposed carbonyl insertion mode for the activation of cyclopropenones is excluded by the density functional theory calculations. The directing group effect in cyclopropenone activation was theoretically investigated. Distortion-interaction analysis, noncovalent interaction analysis, and global electrophilicity/nucleophilicity index calculations reveal the lower oxidation addition reactivity with the nitrone directing group, which is coincident with experimental observations. Distortion-interaction analysis was also performed to reveal the regioselectivity of the oxidative addition with asymmetrical cyclopropenones.

Abstract:Given the utility of enantioenriched alkylboronates, asymmetric borylation has attracted substantial research interest in recent de-cades. Herein, a catalytic enantioselective hydroboration through desymmetrization of enantiotopic carbons in cyclopropanes involving C-C bond activation is reported. Treatment of cyclopro-panes bearing an amide directing group in the presence of rhodium catalysis using HBpin as a boron source allows the construction of a series of alkyl boronates containing g-stereogenic amines. The key to high enantioselectivity relies on two distinct ligands that act cooperatively: an exogenous monodentate chiral phosphite that in-duces enantioselectivity and an endogenous acetylacetonate that exerts a remarkably positive influence on the enhancement of enan-tioselectivity. Detailed experimental and computational studies elucidate the effect of ligand cooperativity and the key steps involving s-bond activation process, C-B bond formation, and the absolute configuration of products.

Abstract:Recent strides in C–H borylation have significantly expanded our toolkit for the preparation of organoboronates. Nevertheless, avenues alternative to obtain these compounds via σ-C–C cleavage, thereby facilitating molecular scaffold editing, remain scarce. Several methodologies have been proposed for hydroboration of cyclopropanes by activating C–C bonds, conventionally relying on noble and hazardous metal catalysts to control reaction outcomes. Here, we present a strategy for crafting stereochemically precise γ-borylenamides through ring-opening of cyclopropanes avoiding any metallic entities. Boryl species, generated through a ternary reaction with BCl3, cyclopropanes, and a tertiary amine, selectively undergo C–C bond eliminative borylation under the directing of N-acyl group, thereby ensuring enhanced selectivity and efficiency along the reaction pathway. Such inherently stereoconvergent approach accommodates precursors of diverse geometries, including cis/trans isomeric blends. Several methodologies have been proposed for hydroboration of cyclopropanes by activating C–C bonds, conventionally relying on noble and hazardous metal catalysts to control reaction outcomes. Here, the authors report a strategy for crafting stereochemically precise γ-borylenamides through ring-opening of cyclopropanes without metallic entities.

Abstract:An efficient pyridyl-directed Rh(III)-catalyzed o-carborane B(3)–H acyloxylation is reported. The B(3)–H bond is the most electron-deficient vertex on o-carborane whose functionalization is challenging. The combination of Cu(OH)2 and diverse carboxylic acids provides low cost and abundant acyloxyl sources which could lead to moderate to excellent yields.

Abstract:High-valent transition metal or main group complex mediated σ-bond metathesis plays an important role in the activation of covalent H–E bonds. However, its involvement in the activation of C–C bonds has remained elusive. Here we describe direct hydroboration of the C–C bonds of cyclopropanes by a hydroborenium complex. Our mechanism study suggests this reaction operates through a σ-bond metathesis pathway. With this hydroborenium complex as a catalyst, hydrogenolysis of unfunctionalized cyclopropanes was achieved, which is unprecedented for homogeneous catalysts and provides an unconventional approach for C–C bond functionalization in the absence of metals.
