Abstract:Sheepgrass is an important grass which has both ecological and economical value. It is mainly distributed in Eurasia and America, extending to sub-tropic and tropic alpine zones. The previous researches have found that one genome of sheepgrass (NsNsXmXm) came from the Psathyrostachys (NsNs), by observing morphological feature, such as meiotic chromosome pairing of intergeneric hybrids, DNA patterns of hybridization, and variation in repeated nucleotide sequences. Based on the sequences ITS and trnL-F, it was concluded that the maternal of sheepgrass is Ns genome and the paternal is Xm genome (Psathyrostachys). Additionally, 293 accessions' genetic diversity was assessed continuously in 37 morphological features in 3 years, and the result shows that the yellow-green type had significantly (P < 0.05) less genetic diversity than the gray-green type of sheepgrass. The highest genetic diversity index distributes from 124 to 128 degrees E longitude region, which shows the richest germplasm of sheepgrass. This discovery can provide a strong support for assessing the genetic diversity, breeding, and evolution of sheepgrass in China in the future.
