Abstract:Based oil field sampling of the aphids, Myzus persicae and Lipaphis erysimi oil Brassica campestris ssp. chinensis, data sets consisting of 57, 66 and 38 estimates of mean aphid density (m), variance (s(2)) and the proportion of plants (P-T) with no more that T aphids were generated for them and their mixed populations, respectively. Empirical relationship between m and P-T was developed for each T by using the parameters from the linear regression of In(m) on In[- In(P-T)]. The importance of the T in reduction of sampling errors are discussed. The results indicated that small T, particularly empty plants could lead to spurious estimates of tn from P-T with small r(2), large prediction variance. Binomial sample sizes based on the T of 30, 10 and 20 were found to he associated with relatively high r(2), the smallest prediction variance. Thus, these T values are recommended for use in estimating their populations for control decision making at high densities.
