Abstract:Air conditioning in combat vehicle crew compartment air conditioning can improve working environment for crewmembers and ensure high fighting efficiency. It can also provide better running environment for electric equipment to ensure high reliability. Detailed research on thermal conditioning of combat vehicle is presented. This study compared candidate systems, based on performance, power, size, weight, logistics, cost, and development status. Both the air and vapor cycle systems underwent a preliminary design evaluation and a detailed trade-off. Conclusion drawn from the preliminary design and trade-off of these two concepts are as follows. On a comparative point basis, the air and vapor cycles are almost equivalent. The vapor cycle system has distinct advantages in power and cost. The air cycle system has distinct advantages in performance and weight. The air cycle system has a slight advantage in size and logistics. Either an air cycle or vapor cycle can provide the thermal conditioning in the combat vehicle compartment conditioning. If power is the item of primary importance, the selection of the vapor cycle would be indicated. However, if a vehicle has power enough, the size and the weight of the air conditioning system size and weight may be of primary importance and the installation of an air cycle system would be recommended.
