Abstract:Device-to-device (D2D) communications have been a promising technique for future long term evolution (LTE) systems. In this paper, we aim to maximize the system energy efficiency (EE) of a communication system including both conventional cellular users and D2D users. We consider two different D2D access cases depending on whether all D2D users can be accessed or not. In both cases, the EE maximization problem is formulated as a combinatorial fractional programming problem. We then use the fractional programming and the branch-and-bound (BnB) method to find the optimal solution. Furthermore, low complexity algorithms are proposed according to the network load. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

With an ever-increasing demand for higher data rate wireless access, D2D communication is set to become a key feature supported by next generation cellular networks. This book introduces D2D-based wireless communications from the physical, MAC, network, and application layer perspectives, providing all the key background information before moving on to discuss real-world applications as well as potential future developments. Key topics are discussed in detail, such as dynamic resource sharing (for example of spectrum and power) between cellular and ad hoc D2D communications to accommodate larger volumes of traffic and provide better service to users. Readers will understand the practical challenges of resource management, optimization, security, standardization, and network topology, and learn how the design principles are applied in practice.

Abstract:In this article, we look into how the LTE network can efficiently evolve to cater for new data services by utilizing direct communications between mobile devices and extending the direct transmissions to the unlicensed bands, that is, D2D communications in conjunction with LTE-Unlicensed. In doing so, it provides an opportunity to solve the main challenge of mutual interference between D2D and CC transmissions. In this context, we review three interconnected major technical areas of multihop D2D: transmission band selection, routing path selection, and resource management. Traditionally, D2D transmissions are limited to specific regions of a cell's coverage area in order to limit the interference to CC primary links. We show that by allowing D2D to operate in the unlicensed bands with protective fairness measures for WiFi transmissions, D2D is able to operate across the whole coverage area and, in doing so, efficiently scale the overall network capacity while minimizing cross-tier and cross-technology interference.

Abstract:This paper studies the tight integration of D2D communication into an LTE-Advanced network and the performance of D2D multi-hop communication. The main focus is on the capacity of the proposed system with multiple idle UEs acting as relays. The relays are chosen to form multi-hop communication and connect with both active UEs through D2D technology. Further, we present numerical results based on the system simulations in an interference limited scenario and compare results with and without the use of resource sharing techniques. The results indicate that appropriate resource sharing and allocation algorithm could increase SINR by reducing interference, and the system throughput could be improved more than 15% in the hybrid cellular network. © 2013 IEEE.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a device-to-device (D2D) communications underlaying cellular network where Long Term Evolution (LTE) and D2D users are allowed to communicate over both licensed and unlicensed bands for spectrum efficiency improvement. LTE users utilize spectrum orthogonally and share it with D2D users. To maximize the total throughput of this D2D system, we leverage stochastic geometry to derive the throughput for each kind of users by modeling the deployment of users as Poisson point processes (PPPs), and investigate the mode selection problem for D2D users. Since the problem is NP-hard, we propose a sequential quadratic programming (SQP) based algorithm to obtain the corresponding suboptimal solutions. Theoretically, we evaluate the system performance by analyzing the throughput regions. Simulation results validate the accuracy of the geometric analysis and verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the underlay and overlay mode selection of Device-to-Device (D2D) communication in the LTE-Advanced single-cell scenario. The two cases that the cell contains relay node or not are considered, and the study focuses on the location relationship between cellular UE and D2D UE. Our evaluation shows that whether D2D communication can reuse the cellular uplink resource or not is affected by the system parameters. Specifically the underlay mode is preferred when the cellular user is closer to the BS or relay node than the D2D user. The simulations show that the introduction of relay node enables D2D pairs to have more chances to share the resources with cellular user in the underlay mode.

Abstract:Device-to-device (D2D) communication is proposed as a vital technique to enhance system capacity in cellular networks, which requires efficient interference modeling and managements to improve spectral efficiency. In practice, even when two wireless connections share the same resources, the interference between them may not always exist if there is no conflict at packet-level transmissions. To explore the real effect of interference, in this paper, we establish a cross-layer model for D2D communications underlaying cellular network and derive the closed-form stable throughput region. Then, we formulate an optimization problem to obtain the maximal achievable packet rate for cellular link, which determines whether the D2D pair can share the same resources with a specific cellular link. By dividing the original optimization problem into several simplified subproblems, the optimal solution can be calculated with low complexity. Subsequently, our model is extended to a generalized scenario where multiple D2D pairs share the same resources with one cellular link. Due to the complexity of obtaining closed-form expressions on stable throughput regions, we propose an algorithm to determine whether the transmissions of the cellular link and the multiple D2D pairs can satisfy the QoS requirements simultaneously. Furthermore, a low-complexity dynamic admission control strategy is introduced to deal with the admission process for new D2D requests. As a consequence, the cellular spectrum can allow access of many more D2D pairs than what the conventional model can. The significant improvements are verified by numeral simulations.

Abstract:Device-to-Device (D2D) communication was initially proposed in cellular networks as a new paradigm to enhance network performance. The emergence of new applications such as content distribution and location-aware advertisement introduced new use-cases for D2D communications in cellular networks. The initial studies showed that D2D communication has advantages such as increased spectral efficiency and reduced communication delay. However, this communication mode introduces complications in terms of interference control overhead and protocols that are still open research problems. The feasibility of D2D communications in LTE-A is being studied by academia, industry, and the standardization bodies. To date, there are more than 100 papers available on D2D communications in cellular networks and, there is no survey on this field. In this article, we provide a taxonomy based on the D2D communicating spectrum and review the available literature extensively under the proposed taxonomy. Moreover, we provide new insights to the over-explored and under-explored areas which lead us to identify open research problems of D2D communication in cellular networks.

Abstract:Device-to-device（D2D）communication enables seamless operation of combining cellular and mobile Ad Hoc networks, which significantly improves the system spectrum efficiency and network capacity. The concept and application challenges of D2D local area network in theory and practice were introduced. The importance of cross layer resource management in solving interference avoidance of D2D communication was discussed, and an example of wireless resource management was also provided. The data results show that the performance of the proposed scheme is close to that of the exhaustive search optimal scheme, while has a relatively lower complexity. At present, D2D communication exhibits vast potential of achieving high system capacity and fully exploring wireless resources.

Enhancing multimedia QoS with device-to-device communication as an underlay in lte networks

Abstract:We present in this paper a new device-to-device (D2D) communication scheme to create a QoS enhanced multimedia services for LTE users who are physically close to each other. This scheme has a potential to provide higher bandwidth service with reduced delay and reduced power consumption. However, a significant challenge from such D2D opportunity is to establish the direct link between nearby devices without interference to other regular LTE users. In this research, we develop a novel user selective resource allocation scheme that allows D2D links to share the same radio resources with LTE regular users while proactively avoiding the interferences with intelligent user selection. The main contribution of the proposed scheme is in the innovative design of the sub-channel selection algorithms for both D2D links and regular LTE users. These algorithms serve dual purpose: (1) providing desired QoS enhancement to multimedia consumers in D2D links while minimizing the interference to regular users; (2) maximizing the sum rate of the LTE networks considering the interference from D2D links and the fairness issue. The simulation results show that the total achievable capacity of LTE networks is dramatically enhanced by D2D communication with this new user selective resource allocation.

Abstract:Device-to-device (D2D) communication integrated into cellular networks is a means to take advantage of the proximity of devices and allow for reusing cellular resources and thereby to increase the user bitrates and the system capacity. However, when D2D (in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project also called Long Term Evolution (LTE) Direct) communication in cellular spectrum is supported, there is a need to revisit and modify the existing radio resource management (RRM) and power control (PC) techniques to realize the potential of the proximity and reuse gains and to limit the interference at the cellular layer. In this paper, we examine the performance of the flexible LTE PC tool box and benchmark it against a utility optimal iterative scheme. We find that the open loop PC scheme of LTE performs well for cellular users both in terms of the used transmit power levels and the achieved signal-to-interference-and-noise-ratio (SINR) distribution. However, the performance of the D2D users as well as the overall system throughput can be boosted by the utility optimal scheme, because the utility maximizing scheme takes better advantage of both the proximity and the reuse gains. Therefore, in this paper we propose a hybrid PC scheme, in which cellular users employ the open loop path compensation method of LTE, while D2D users use the utility optimizing distributed PC scheme. In order to protect the cellular layer, the hybrid scheme allows for limiting the interference caused by the D2D layer at the cost of having a small impact on the performance of the D2D layer. To ensure feasibility, we limit the number of iterations to a practically feasible level. We make the point that the hybrid scheme is not only near optimal, but it also allows for a distributed implementation for the D2D users, while preserving the LTE PC scheme for the cellular users.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel technology, namely, device-to-device communications in the unlicensed spectrum (D2D-U) is proposed, which can allow D2D users to transmit on the unlicensed spectrum and coexist with the incumbent Wi-Fi networks. In D2D-U networks, D2D users can share the licensed spectrum with the existing cellular users or share the unlicensed spectrum with legacy Wi-Fi networks. Therefore, mutual interference across different networks and different users should be properly coordinated to optimize the system performance. In this paper, within the framework of D2D-U, we propose a joint mode selection and resource allocation algorithm to minimize the overall interference that cellular and Wi-Fi users suffer from the D2D communications while guaranteeing the signal-to-noise-and-interference ratio requirements of all users, including those of cellular, D2D, and Wi-Fi. Through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, we show that using unlicensed spectrum can significantly mitigate the interference to both cellular and Wi-Fi users. Moreover, the duty cycle-based unlicensed spectrum access method achieves better system throughput than the listen-before-talk-based access method in most of the cases.

Abstract:The reference scenario in this paper is a single cell in a Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) system, where multiple user equipments (UEs) aim at uploading some data to a central server or to the Cloud. The traditional uploading technique used in cellular systems, i.e., with separate links from each UE to the eNodeB, is compared to innovative \textit{relay-based} schemes that exploit Device-to-Device (D2D) communications between two (or more) UEs in proximity to each other. Differences in the channel quality experienced by the UEs offer an opportunity to develop D2D-based solutions, where \textit{(i)} the UE with a poor direct link to the eNodeB will forward data to a nearby UE over a high-quality D2D link; and \textit{(ii)} the receiving UE then uploads its own generated data and the relayed data to the eNodeB over a good uplink channel. A straightforward gain in the data uploading time can be obtained for the first UE. To extend the benefits, also to the relaying UE, enhanced D2D-based solutions are proposed that decrease the uploading time of this UE based on the cooperative sharing of the resources allocated by the eNodeB to the cooperating devices. Finally, preliminary results are also presented for a multihop study case, where a chain of devices exploits D2D communications to upload data to the eNodeB.

Abstract:LTE D2D communication, which emerges as a SoLoMo network enabler, has become an essential part of our everyday life and brings benefits to subscribers and telecommunication operators alike. Proximate device discovery, or peer discovery, is an essential part in the D2D technology since the node first needs to find its neighbors before initiating D2D communication. With functions of intelligent discovery, context awareness and interactive exchange, D2D communication facilitates content sharing of a device with others. A plethora of works about device discovery have been carried out in ad hoc networks. However, as a new feature in LTE systems, the special characteristics of proximate device discovery raise several unique challenges. In this article, variant aspects of proximate device discovery are surveyed. We first overview the fundamentals of peer discovery, including basic concepts, application scenarios, associated requirements, along with the current standardization progress. The key challenges and open issues in the design of device discovery signals and device discovery protocols for D2D communication in centralized and distributed situations are respectively surveyed. Possible approaches to address these challenges are discussed.

Abstract:It is expected that device-to-device (D2D) communication is allowed to underlay future cellular networks such as IMT-Advanced for spectrum efficiency. This article studies the mechanisms of D2D communication and interference avoidance when the D2D subsystem reuses uplink resources and downlink spectrums with a cellular system, respectively. We firstly propose an effective scheme to establish and maintain D2D communication. Moreover, a novel method to deal with the resource allocation and interference avoidance issues by utilizing the network peculiarity of a hybrid network to share the uplink resource is proposed. Most research focuses on reusing the uplink spectrums, but how to share the downlink frequency bands is seldom addressed. To share the downlink spectrums and avoid the interference to the primary cellular devices, a labeled time slots based mechanism is proposed. Implementation details are described in a real cellular system and simulation results prove that satisfying performance can be achieved by using the proposed mechanisms.
