Further more, the relation among major variables is quantized and the influence caused by certain variables comprehensively is elaborated. The research results may offer the guidance for similar projects.
Numerical Simulation of Excitation Source with Medium of Different P-wave Velocity

Abstract:Source excitation is an important factor of the effects of seismic exploration. Choosing the appropriate excitation parameters in oil and gas exploration in order to get better seismic record is necessary. By using the software ANSYS/LS-DYNA, we adopted Lagrange algorithm based on the finite element method to simulate the seismic source of the cylindrical explosive. In this paper we focus on the frequency component of excited seismic waves in single well. Through the study of explosive detonation velocity and explosive shape we conclude that the dynamite with low detonation velocity and elongated grains has high excitation frequency and energy in the medium with low P-wave velocity, but the dynamite with high detonation velocity and short-thick shape has high excitation frequency and energy in the medium with high P-wave velocity. We want to provide references for the choices of excitation parameters in actual exploration to save exploration costs.
Numerical Simulation of Blast Loads and Dynamic Response of Reinforced Concrete Slab Subjected to Close-in Explosion

Abstract:In the evaluation of anti-explosion performance for significant building and protective engineering structures,a direct simulation using appropriate computational technique is very necessary,wherein the simulation precision of blast loads becomes mainly concerned problem.This paper presents a numerical simulation study on the prediction of the blast load in free air using AUTODYN software,with focus on the sensitivity of the simulated blast load to the mesh grid size and solution algorithms.The results are compared with empirical predictions and blast parameters from TM5-1300.It is found that the mesh size has a remarkable effect on peak overpressure and a certain extent effect on impulse,and the Euler-FCT algorithm in contrast with Euler-G improves the accuracy and efficiency.However,the blast loads tends to be systematically underestimated;the underestimation of blast load may be compensated by imposing a charge adjustment factor of 1.5.The dynamic response of the reinforced concrete slab under nearby explosion is then analyzed using a coupled scheme,and the full processes of the deformation and damage of RC slab such as the cracking and break-up of concrete,yield of reinforcing bars,and local perforation are observed realistically.

Abstract:Numerical simulation of the shock wave propagation process of explosives with different charge amounts is carried out with the nonlinear dynamics software AUTODYN, and the influence law of the shock wave generated by the explosion of different explosive equivalents on the deflection change of the target plate at different distances is explored, and the fitting formula for the deflection change of the target plate with different charge amounts at different burst distances is given. The fitting results of this paper can provide reference for the failure of the equivalent target plate.

Abstract:This paper investigates the damaging effects of explosion shock waves in a semi-closed environment. A simulation model was constructed using the arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) algorithm. The ALE algorithm analyzed the shock wave overpressure at different positions, and the simulation data from 1.5 to 2.6 ms were fitted to derive a formula for the first peak value of the shock wave overpressure. The accuracy of the simulation results is verified through numerical simulation and experimental validation. Experiments indicate that in semi-closed environments, explosion shock waves reflect off walls multiple times, resulting in multiple peaks in the overpressure curves at each measurement point. The fitting formulas for some measuring points agree with experimental values, but there are differences due to experimental conditions and the complexity of the flow field in the semi-closed environment. Although the experimental datum is limited and discrete, the fitting formula is generally consistent with the experimental data at certain measuring points.

Abstract:A numerical simulation of TNT explosion on the soil surface is presented in this paper. It demonstrates how the blast wave propagates on the soil surface and interacts with the soil surface. Compared with the explosion in air, a comparative analysis on the distribution of the shock wave overpressure is implemented. The results show that the space on the soil surface close to the explosion source can be divided into a relatively high pressure region and a relatively low pressure region. Moreover, by defining the scaled height H, the interface of two regions comes about H = 0.35.

Abstract:In this paper, the damage effect of shock wave on the closed cubic structure is studied. Based on the free-field shock wave theory, the propagation law and characteristics of the explosion shock wave in the closed cube are analyzed, and the conduction formula is derived. By adopting method of the theoretical calculation of the feature points of the cube model and the numerical simulation of LS-DYNA finite element analysis software, the theoretical calculation values and numerical simulation values of the first shock wave over-pressure of different measuring points were compared. The results show that the simulation values of the three characteristic points in the closed cube are consistent with the theoretical calculation values, which can provide a theoretical reference for the selection of the sensor and the arrangement of the measuring points in the actual measurement.

Abstract:The shock wave and bubble dynamics of an underwater explosion are significant in various fields. When the charge is non-spherical, the detonation process will remarkably affect the shock wave formation and the subsequent bubble motion. In this work, the underwater explosion of a cylindrical explosive is investigated numerically with the Eulerian finite-element method combined with the programed burn model treating the detonation process. The present model is validated by comparing the simulated results with the experimental ones. Then, several cases with different slenderness of the explosive charge in various buoyancy environments are simulated and analyzed. The results demonstrate a notable variation of the shock wave in different directions. The shock wave will reach the highest pressure peak and shortest pulse width at a certain angle determined by the ratio between the speeds of the detonation wave and the shock wave. Furthermore, the non-spherical initial expansion of the bubble casts a significant influence on the subsequent bubble evolution. Three typical jet morphologies are identified with different combinations of buoyancy parameter and oblateness ratios of the bubble, featured by a slightly oblique upward jet penetrating the bubble, a laminar jet that failed to penetrate the bubble continuously, and a pair of opposite horizontal jets penetrating the bubble. Meanwhile, the horizontal jets that happen under a weak buoyancy environment will reduce the upward migration.

Abstract:The characteristic response of a structure to blast load may be divided into two distinctive phases, namely the direct blast response during which the shock wave effect and localized damage take place, and the post-blast phase whereby progressive collapse may occur. A reliable post-blast analysis depends on a sound understanding of the direct blast effect. Because of the complex loading environment and the stress wave effects, the analysis on the direct effect often necessitates a high fidelity numerical model with coupled fluid (air) and solid subdomains. In such a modelling framework, an appropriate representation of the blast load and the high nonlinearity of the material response is a key to a reliable outcome. This paper presents a series of calibration study on these two important modelling considerations in a coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian framework using a hydrocode. The calibration of the simulated blast load is carried out for both free air and internal explosions. The simulation of the extreme dynamic response of concrete components is achieved using an advanced concrete damage model in conjunction with an element erosion scheme. Validation Simulations are conducted for two representative scenarios; one involves a concrete slab under internal blast, and the other with a RC column under air blast, with a particular focus on the simulation sensitivity to the mesh size and the erosion criterion.

Energy wave addition and TVD scheme were chosen to simulate the blast generated by unconfined volume cloud explosion in Euler system. The energy wave model of heat release used in this paper is simple and has reasonable physical interpretation. It can also response the characterization of non-ideal explosion.

Abstract:The explosion of quick actuating pressure vessels are about one third of the total pressure vessels explosion.And the explosion accident caused by residual pressure is one of the most common kinds of accidents in quick actuating pressure vessels.In this paper,a numerical simulation model for pressure vessel explosion with residual pressure was established.And it was applied for calculation with visual results including pressure distribution,velocity distribution,temperature distribution,and so on.Numerical simulation results were compared with experimental data.It showed that the model has high precision,and can effectively predict the explosion of quick actuating pressure vessels with residual pressure.

Abstract:The new numerical algorithms in SUPER/CESE and their applications in explosion mechanics are studied. The researched algorithms and models include an improved CE/SE (space-time Conservation Element and Solution Element) method, a local hybrid particle level set method, three chemical reaction models and a two-fluid model. Problems of shock wave reflection over wedges, explosive welding, cellular structure of gaseous detonations and two-phase detonations in the gas-droplet system are simulated by using the above-mentioned algorithms and models. The numerical results reveal that the adopted algorithms have many advantages such as high numerical accuracy, wide application field and good compatibility. The numerical algorithms presented in this paper may be applied to the numerical research of explosion mechanics.

Abstract:This article presents numerical simulation of underwater explosions using a one-dimensional “wedge” model of ANSYS-AUTODYN explicit software for nonlinear dynamics, provided by ANSYS Century Dynamics, Inc. (Canonsburg, PA, USA). Through numerical analysis of a typical underwater TNT explosion problems, the effects of the quadratic and linear viscosity on the key phenomenon of this complicated energetic physical process are conducted. The results show that appropriate values exist for these two viscosities to model the process in given mesh sizes. Based on these preliminary simulations, values of quadratic and linear viscosity, 1 and 0.034, 1 and 0.068 are determined for the ranges of scaled distance from 3 to 10 and 1.5 to 3, respectively. Effects of charge depth, charge mass, and mesh density on the shock wave and bubble pulse parameters are performed for four different explosives, 2,4,5-trinitrotoluene (TNT), H-6, pentolite, and pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN). All of the results are compared with empirical equations and show that the ANSYS-AUTODYN software can be used to model and capture the major features of underwater explosion phenomena at acceptable accuracy and timesaving.

Abstract:In this study,systematic centrifuge experiments and numerical studies are conducted to investigate the effect of shock loads due to an underwater explosion on the dynamic responses of an air-backed steel plate.Numerical simulations with three different models of pressure time history generated by underwater explosion were carried out.The first model of pressure time history was measured in test.The second model to predict the time history of shock wave pressure from an underwater explosion was created by Cole in 1948.Coefficients of Cole's formulas are determined experimentally.The third model was developed by Zamyshlyaev and Yakovlev in 1973.All of them are implemented into the numerical model to calculate the shock responses of the plate.Simulated peak strains obtained from the three models are compared with the experimental results,yielding average relative differences of 21.39％,45.73％,and 13.92％,respectively.The Russell error technique is used to quantitatively analyze the correlation between the numerical and experimental results.Quantitative analysis shows that the simulated strains for most measurement points on the steel plate are acceptable.By changing the scaled distances,different shock impulses were obtained and exerted on the steel plate.Systematic numerical studies are performed to investigate the effect of the accumulated shock impulse on the peak strains.The numerical and experimental results suggest that the peak strains are strongly dependent on the accumulated shock impulse.

Abstract:When a charge explodes in shallow water, the combined effects of free surface and seabed on shockwave propagation and bubble motion are significant. In this paper, an underwater explosion between a deformable seabed and a free surface is numerically investigated. An axisymmetric numerical model is established using the Eulerian Finite Element Method (EFEM) and the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method is used in dealing with the interface. The truncated computational domain boundary adopts the non-reflecting boundary condition. The seabed is regarded as a heavier fluid and density ratio between the seabed and water is used to describe seabed feature in this paper. The present model is validated by comparing with the experiment and shows great results. Then the underwater explosion with different initial conditions are simulated, it is found that deformable seabed has a great impact on bubble when the bubble is near the deformable seabed. And the bubble period and pressure peak of shockwave have a positive relation with the density ratio and initial charge depth. In addition, the annular jet might appear and penetrate the upper surface of the bubble in certain condition, leading to the bubble split during the contraction phase.

Abstract:Abstract In the numerical simulation research for underwater explosion, the selection of simulation parameters has a great influence on the results of numerical calculation. Based on the one-dimensional spherical symmetry model, this paper systematically studies the influence of three factors: grid size, water state equation and artificial viscosity coefficient on the important physical parameters of water explosion when TNT explosive is exploded in water. The important physical parameters selected for the explosion in water are the shock wave intensity, the maximu m radius of the bubble and the pulsation period of the bubble. A series of studies are carried out on underwater explosions with different grid sizes, so as to obtain the corresponding recommended grids that meet the calculation accuracy. The influence of different water state equations on the simulation results is discussed. The effect of artificial viscosity coefficient on the simulation results is analyzed. Finally, the similarity law of the model is studied to verify the universality of the model parameters.

Abstract:The detonation of a column charge and the damage process in a rock mass are simulated in this study by the particle flow code method. The expansion loading method and the dynamic boundary treatment method are established according to the discrete element mechanism. Mechanical parameters are calibrated on the basis of the Starfield superposition principle and the dynamic compensation method. Dynamic stiffness and microscopic parameters are used for numerical simulations. Numerical test results are consistent with lab experimental test results. The velocity attenuation law is compared with that of theoretical results, and the blasting crater action index is compared with that of field test results, to verify the rationality of the numerical explosion model of the column charge. The mechanism of the rock breaking process under column charge explosion is analyzed. Stress wave propagation, detonation wave propagation, and crack extension are investigated. The stress wave gradient law is obtained, and the effects of blasting rock breaking, crack extension, and explosion effect outside the blasting crater area are determined with different initiation modes. The research method can explain the blasting stress wave propagation law and describe the dynamical failure process in rock masses. This study can provide a reliable numerical analysis method for follow-up blasting research and offer practical guidance on engineering blasting.

Abstract:In this study, based on a closed bomb test combined with computational fluid dynamics, a structural finite element method, and an acoustic boundary element method, a fluid-solid acoustic one-way coupling calculation model is established for the combustion process of energetic materials in a closed bomb, and the effectiveness of the model is verified by experiments. It is found that the maximum peak sound pressure increases exponentially with an increase in loading doses or gas pressure. However, a change in the combustion coefficient of the energetic materials has little effect on the noise generated during the combustion process in the closed bomb. When the combustion coefficient is reduced by a multiple of 16, the maximum transient sound pressure is reduced by 1.79 dB, and the sound pressure level in the frequency band is reduced by 1.75 dB. With an increase in shell thickness, the combustion noise of the energetic materials in the closed bomb decreases, and the reduction range of the combustion noise increases with the increase in shell thickness.

Abstract:In this paper, the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is applied to simulate the high explosive (HE) explosion which consists of detonation and dispersion process. The combination of meshless and Lagrangian nature inherent in the SPH methodology avoids the disadvantages of traditional numerical methods in treating large deformations, large inhomogeneities and tracing free surfaces in the extremely transient explosion process. Four numerical examples are presented with comparisons from different sources. The presented numerical examples involve in various HE explosion scenarios of arbitrary charge shape and different detonation orientations. The simulation results show that the presented SPH methodology can give good prediction for both the magnitude and form of the detonation wave as well as the pressure transient in the explosion process. Major physics of the HE explosion can be well captured in the simulation.

Abstract:Shock waves are one of the primary damage parameters of an ammunition explosion. Therefore, accurately obtaining the shock wave pressure distribution law after ammunition explosion is greatly significant for the ammunition damage power evaluation and the guidance of ammunition selection in the operations course. This study established the mapping function between the surface reflected and free-field shock wave pressures, considering the altitude effect on shock wave pressure. Finite element numerical simulation analysis of typical (trinitrotoluene) TNT explosive quality and static explosion shock wave pressure test were performed, and the model calculation accuracy was verified by using the obtained shock wave pressure data. The Validation results show that the model had 84% calculation accuracy and could well reflect the explosion shock wave pressure distribution law. Furthermore, the results provided a new calculation method and scientific data support for the accurate evaluation of the damage power of an ammunition explosion. Additionally, the results are significant for applications in engineering testing and the military.
