Abstract:To address the problem of TCP end-to-end congestion control, IETF advocates deploying active queue management (AQM) mechanisms in the TCP/IP networks. Several popular AQM algorithms, such as RED (Random Early Detection), BLUE, ARED (Adaptive RED) and SRED (Stabilized RED), are compared based on simulations and the performance metrics used in the study are queue size, packet drop probability, packet loss rate, throughput on different connections and link utilization on different buffer size. The simulation results indicate that in all these aspects, the performance of BLUE, ARED and SRED are better than that of RED. Furthermore, ARED and SRED can stabilize queue size and control packet loss rate effectively thus they maintain high link utilization, bounded delays and more certain buffer provision.

Abstract:Active queue management (AQM) is one of the main congestion control methods in IP network. In this paper we systematically analyze the architecture of the end-to-end congestion control schemes with AQM from the control-theoretic point of view. A transfer function of a simplified network's model is introduced. Based on the model, the configuration of RED and some other AQM algorithms are discussed. Finally we propose some future researches including the precision of network models and robustness of the control algorithms.

Abstract:To address the problems of TCP (Transport control protocol) end-to-end congestion control mechanism, the IETF (Internet engineering task force) advocates deploying active queue management mechanisms in the network. RED is a popular AQM algorithm. It uses average queue size to detect the incipient network congestion. RED can effectively resolve the problems of traditional Drop-Tail. However, there are still some problems with RED. RED is too sensitive to its parameters and the changes of the number of active TCP connections. On the other hand, the congestion notification sending rate of RED algorithm is determined by max(p) and the value of maxp is fixed. As a result, these will lead to queue size oscillation which causes queuing delay and jitter. This paper proposes a new adaptive AQM algorithm named "MRED" (Modified RED). Our goal is to stabilized the queue size in a wide variety of traffic scenarios. MRED can adjust the value of max(p) to the changes of the traffic load so that the congestion notification can be sent to sufficient TCP sources to mitigate the congestion level. Simulation results indicate that MRED can effectively avoid the queue overflow and stabilize the queue occupation independent of the number of active TCP connections thus resulting in a more predictable packet delay in the network.
Mrio: A New Active Queue Management Algorithm For Differentiated Services

Abstract:The DiffServ (Differentiate service) architecture has recently become the preferred service model for addressing QoS (Quality of service) issues in IP networks due to its simplicity and scalability. In DiffServ domain, the core routers use RIO (Red with in and out) algorithm, which performs different packets dropping schemes when congestion occurs. But RIO algorithm cannot stabilize the queue size and therefore, leads to unpredictable queuing delay and jitter. Furthermore, RIO has the "bandwidth skew" problem. The object of MRIO (MRED with in and out) algorithm is to stabilize the queue size and mitigate the "bandwidth skew" problem. MRIO is based on RED (Random early detection) for IN packets and MRED (Modified RED) algorithm for OUT packets. The simulation results indicate that compared with RIO, MRIO performs better in stabilizing queue size and mitigating "bandwidth skew" problem.

Abstract:In order to address the problems of TCP end-to-end congestion control, the IETF advocates to deploy active queue management mechanisms in the network. Blue is a popular AQM algorithm. It uses packet loss and link idle events to manage congestion. Compared with RED, Blue has many advantages. But because of lacking incipient congestion detecting mechanism, it suffers from queue size oscillations. Moreover many active TCP connections in the router or the variety of the number of active TCP connections will lead to queue overflow and underflow. A new AQM algorithm named “SBlue” (stabilized Blue) is proposed. Simulation results indicate that SBlue can effectively stabilize the queue occupation at a level independent of the number of active TCP connections and mitigate the queue overflow and underflow.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new active queue management algorithm named REDu that excavates in depth the essential differences between non-adaptive and adaptive flows.Taking use of information like CHOKe Hit and RED Drop,this algorithm preselects non-adaptive flows and utilizes a heat increasing and decreasing mechanism to compute heat,a new kind of partial flow state,achieving the detection and punishment of non-adaptive flows.Simulation results based on ns-2 show that,compared with several other active queue management algorithms,REDu can detect and punish non-adaptive flows more precisely,bring more adequate protection to adaptive flows and improve network robustness significantly.

Abstract:The rapid development of information technology has promoted the transformation of traditional networks into intelligent networks. Huge data traffic is generated by various types of traffic services in the intelligent networks, which can easily lead to network congestion, system instability, and other problems. These problems may incur great requirements and pose challenges for queue management algorithms. Most traditional active queue management (AQM) algorithms judge the congestion level of the network based only on the size of the average queue length while ignoring the network traffic variations. This makes these algorithms difficult to achieve effective improvement of congestion control efficiency. To address this problem, a novel network congestion control algorithm, namely the average queue length and change rate-RED (AC-RED) is proposed in this paper. AC-RED can better relieve network congestion by reconfiguring the packet loss strategy model based on the average queue length change rate. The simulation results of NS2 show that in complex and dynamic network environments, the performance of AC-RED algorithm in the average queue length, packet loss rate, delay, and delay jitter is improved in most load conditions compared with the other five algorithms.

Abstract:Since its formal introduction to IP networks in 1993 as a viable complementary approach for congestion control, there has been a steady stream of research output with respect to Active Queue Management (AQM). This survey attempts to travel the trajectory of AQM research from 1993 with the first algorithm, Random Early Detection (RED), to current work in 2011. In this survey we discuss the general attributes of AQM schemes, and the design approaches taken such as heuristic, control-theoretic and deterministic optimization. Of interest is the role of AQM in QoS provisioning particularly in the DiffServ context, as well as the role of AQM in the wireless domain. For each section, example algorithms from the research literature are presented.

Abstract:Active queue management achieves the objective of congestion control in some degree, and is becoming a research focus in the Internet community. Most of the existing AQM algorithms follow the probability-based packet dropping mechanism originated from RED, which goes against the router performance optimization because random number generation requires rather computational effort. In this paper, we define a congestion index to indicate the degree of the network congestion. Then, a novel intelligent packet dropping mechanism is designed based on fuzzy logic. The off-line integration greatly simplifies on-line process, which is very beneficial in order to optimize the router performance. The simulation results show that the intelligent mechanism is superior to the classical RED algorithm.

Abstract:A user fair active queue management algorithm named UFQ is introduced.UFQ aims at fairly distributing the network resources among users in various situations.Fairness here means different users who have different profiles will get network resources proportionally.User's utility is defined.User's Packets will be inserted a label with its utility in network edge.During network congestion,UFQ will drop or mark packets according to utility inserted in packets.So it distributes network resources among users with average utility.UFQ requires neither admission control nor signaling.Edge router maintains per flow state and core router maintains no flow state.Only one FIFO queue is kept in each node.With simulation and experiments of TCP and UDP traffic,UFQ has shown good performance on quality of service.

Abstract:The recently proposed Active Queue Management (AQM) is an effective method used in Internet routers for congestion control, and to achieve a tradeoff between link utilization and delay. The de facto standard, the Random Early Detection (RED) AQM scheme, and most of its variants use average queue length as a congestion indicator to trigger packet dropping. In this paper, we propose a novel proportional and differential RED algorithm, called NPDRED, as an extension of RED. NPD-RED is based on a self-tuning Proportional and Differential controller, which not only considers the instantaneous queue length at the current time point, but also takes into consideration the ratio of the current differential error signal to the buffer size. Furthermore, we give theoretical analysis of the system stability and give guidelines for the selection of feedback gains for the TCP/RED system to stabilize the instantaneous queue length at a desirable level. Extensive simulations have been conducted with ns2. The simulation results have demonstrated that the proposed NPD-RED algorithm outperforms the existing AQM schemes in terms of average queue length,average throughput, and stability.

Abstract:In this letter, we evaluate the performance of several adaptive and non-adaptive AQM schemes for congestion control in a dynamic network environment with variable bandwidth links. The AQM schemes examined are RED, BLUE, Adaptive RED, REM, AVQ and PI controller. We compare their queueing performance and show that none of them can derive stable queue length and low packet drop rate simultaneously in networks where both input traffic and available output bandwidth are time varying. Adaptive and efficient algorithms should be designed and applied in order to improve the adaptiveness and robustness of congestion control in dynamic networks such as Internet.

Abstract:With the development of wireless communication technologies, future networks will most likely be heterogeneous, consist of both wired and wireless links. However, current active queue management (AQM) schemes, which are originally designed for wired networks, could cause performance degradation of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) flows over wired-cum-wireless networks. Thus, to deal with these problems, we propose a new rate-based AQM scheme (NRAQM). NRAQM scheme uses a new marking/dropping module and a timer updating module for packets dropping/marking and dropping/marking probability updating, which are different from other existing AQM schemes. The objectives of our proposed scheme are to stabilize networks with low end-to-end delay, and high link utilization regardless the dynamics of wired-cum-wireless networks conditions. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme outperforms the existing AQM schemes over wired-cum-wireless networks.

Abstract:Scavenger Service is a non-elevated QoS technique proposed by the Internet2 project. This paper presents a LAWRRQ(Logarithmical Adaptive Weighted Round Robin Queuing) Algorithm for Scavenger Service. The Algorithm tunes proportion of scavenger service bandwidth logarithmically according to the number of active Scavenger Service flows to reach better performance and robustness. Simulations show that it provides more reliable bottom bandwidth guarantee for Scavenger Service flows while protecting Best Effort flows well.

Abstract:Internet faces the problem of congestion due to its increased use. AQM algorithm is a solution to the problem of congestion control in the Internet. There are various existing algorithms that have evolved over the past few years to solve the problem of congestion in IP networks. Congested link causes many problems such as large delay, underutilization of the link and packet drops in burst. There are various existing algorithms that have evolved over the past few years to solve the problem of congestion in IP networks. In this paper, study of these existing algorithms is done. This paper discusses algorithms based on various congestion-metrics and classifies them based on certain factors. This helps in identifying the algorithms that regulate the congestion more effectively.

Abstract:Congestion control is always an active research field for guaranteeing the Quality of Services (QoS) of datacenter networks (DCNs). However, the current end-to-end TCP design enables both senders and receivers not to directly and precisely obtain the congestion information, incurring inaccurate or non-real-time adjustments. Moreover, switches that act as fundamental primitives in DCN are usually used for reactive congestion feedbacks (e.g., Ack and ECN), leading to underused for proactive congestion control. In this article, we propose a novel active queue management (AQM) scheme called Active Buffer Queueing (ABQ) which leverages active buffer queueing of DCN switches to achieve both high-throughput and loss-free transmissions. When the traffic pattern in DCN is changed intensely in flow size, number and interval, the feedback information to TCP end hosts are imprecise. Unlike other AQMs, the key idea of ABQ is to adjust the flow rate (or packet pace) directly in the switch according to the real-time congestion state. We explain the design rationale behind ABQ and present simulation results of its performance. Finally, we discuss the implementation on the NetFPGA.

Abstract:In this paper, we study how to design algorithms of a satellite queuing system so that all the users have self-interest in controlling congestion when it happens. Most of the algorithms proposed to accomplish this in terrestrial Internet may not be implemented in satellite router due to satellite hardware constraints or performance differences. After investigating characteristics of satellite traffic traces, we propose a new fair AQM algorithm, called Selective Differentiated Penalization. SDP use the recent buffer resources allocation history to differentially penalize misbehaving flows by dropping more of their packets to make a tradeoff between scalability and fairness. The first principle of SDP is that the resulting throughput of each flow should be bounded by the max-min fair share bandwidth. The performance of SDP is aided by the fact that the recent history of buffer resource allocations can provide accurate rate estimates of active flow and the fair share threshold. Simulated results suggest that SDP provides a reasonable degree of max-min fair bandwidth allocation in a wide variety of operating conditions.

Abstract:As more end devices are getting connected, the Internet will become more congested. Various congestion control techniques have been developed either on transport or network layers. Active Queue Management (AQM) is a paradigm that aims to mitigate the congestion on the network layer through active buffer control to avoid overflow. However, finding the right parameters for an AQM scheme is challenging, due to the complexity and dynamics of the networks. On the other hand, the Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) mechanism is a solution that makes visible incipient congestion on the network layer to the transport layer. In this work, we propose to exploit the ECN information to improve AQM algorithms by applying Machine Learning techniques. Our intelligent method uses an artificial neural network to predict congestion and an AQM parameter tuner based on reinforcement learning. The evaluation results show that our solution can enhance the performance of deployed AQM, using the existing TCP congestion control mechanisms.

Abstract:Active Queue Management (AQM) is a very active research area in networking. The main objective of an AQM mechanism is to provide low delay and low loss service in best-effort service networks. In this paper we propose a new AQM algorithm based on the feedback compensation technique in control theory. The algorithm is called Proportional Integral based series compensation, and Position feedback compensation (PIP). By choosing the appropriate feedback compensation element and its parameters, the properties of the corrected system become dependent, to a great extent, on the series and feedback compensatory elements. Thus, PIP can eliminate the error incurred by the inaccuracy in the linear system model as well as eliminate the sensitivity to the changes in system parameters like load level, propagation delay, etc. The performance of PIP is compared to PI using ns simulations. From the experiments and analysis we conclude that PIP is more responsive to and robust under time-varying network conditions than PI.
