Abstract:Stochastic nonlinear impairment is the primary factor that limits the transmission performance of high-speed orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-division multiplexing (MDM) optical fiber communication systems. This Letter presents a low-complexity adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (LANFIS) nonlinear equalizer for OAM-MDM intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission with three OAM modes and 15 wavelength division multiplex (WDM) channels. The LANFIS equalizer could adjust the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the distorted pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) symbols to fit the statistical characteristics of the WDM-OAM-MDM transmission channel. Therefore, although the transmission symbols in the WDM-OAM-MDM system are subjected to a stochastic nonlinear impairment, the proposed LANFIS equalizer can effectively compensate the distorted signals. The proposed equalizer outperforms the Volterra equalizer with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 2, 1.5, and 1.3 dB for three OAM modes at a wavelength of 1550.12 nm, respectively. It also outperforms a CNN equalizer, with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 1, 0.5, and 0.3 dB, respectively. Moreover, complexity reductions of 67%, 74%, and 99.9% are achieved for the LANFIS equalizer compared with the Volterra, CNN, and ANFIS equalizers, respectively. The proposed equalizer has high performance and low complexity, making it a promising candidate for a high-speed WDM-OAM-MDM system.

Abstract:Recently mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) has been widely investigated to enhance fiber optics capacity, in which modes or mode groups in few-mode fiber (FMF) or multi-mode fiber (MMF) are exploited as different spatial channels for data transmission. For short-reach applications, significantly reducing inter-spatial-channel crosstalk to avoid coherent detection and multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) equalization is preferred. Currently most studies focus on the design of weakly-coupled FMFs and mode (de)multiplexers. Alternatively, in this work, a wavelength-interleaved (WI) scheme is proposed to mitigate inter-spatial-channel crosstalk by optimizing the design of direct detection (DD) MDM and wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) system. In weakly-coupled MDM systems, crosstalk mainly comes from the adjacent spatial channels, and the signal-to-crosstalk beat interference (SCBI) constitutes main crosstalk impairment after square-law detection. The WI scheme interleaves the WDM grids in adjacent spatial channels by half WDM channel spacing and uses an electrical low-pass filtering (ELPF) to remove out-of-band SCBI. The effectiveness of SCBI suppression is theoretically analyzed. The feasibility of WI scheme is experimentally verified by 3-mode 3-wavelength MDM-WDM transmission over 500-m OM3 MMF. Enabled by WI scheme, record 120-km 10G-per-channel MDM-WDM transmission over 2-mode FMF without MIMO equalization is successfully demonstrated. The WI scheme is promising to enhance the performance of short reach or even metro MDM optics.

Abstract:Weakly-coupled mode-division multiplexing (MDM) technique based on linearly-polarized (LP) modes in ultralow-modal-crosstalk few-mode fiber (FMF) has been considered as a promising candidate for capacity enhancement of next-generation optical transmission systems. Similar to polarization mode dispersion in single-mode fibers (SMFs), signals in weakly-coupled FMFs suffer from the impacts of intra-LP-mode dispersion (ILMD) for both degenerate and non-degenerate LP modes.In this paper, we propose an effective method for ILMD monitoring in weakly-coupled MDM systems. The ILMD evaluation method for degenerate LP modes is designed by the analysis of channel transfer matrix in a digital coherent receiver. Then the ILMD monitoring scheme is experimentally validated for all the 6 LP mods in a weakly-coupled FMF. The influences of chromatic dispersion, optical signal to noise ratio and inter-LP-mode crosstalk to the method are also investigated.

Abstract:Multi-mode fiber (MMF) links are expected to greatly enhance capacity to cope with rapidly increasing data traffic in optical short-reach systems and networks. Recently, mode division multiplexing (MDM) over MMF has been proposed, in which different modes in MMF are utilized as spatial channels for data transmission. Strongly-coupled MDM techniques utilizing coherent detection and multiplex-input-multiplex-output (MIMO) digital signal processing (DSP) are complex and expensive for short-reach transmission. So the weakly-coupled approach by significantly suppressing mode coupling in the fiber and optical components has been proposed. In this way, the signals in each mode can be independently transmitted and received using conventional intensity modulation and direct detection (IM-DD). In this paper, we elaborate the key technologies to realize weakly-coupled MDM transmission over conventional MMF, including mode characteristic in MMF and weakly-coupled mode multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX). We also present the up-to-date experimental results for weakly-coupled MDM transmission over conventional OM3 MMF. We show that weakly-coupled MDM scheme is promising for high-speed optical interconnections and bandwidth upgrade of already-deployed MMF links.

Abstract:Recently, sparse mode-division multiplexing (MDM) scheme has been proposed and experimentally verified to support long-haul MDM transmission without intermodal multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) processing, in which only multiple non-adjacent linearly-polarized (LP) modes in weakly-coupled few-mode fibers (FMFs) are utilized as active channels to achieve ultralow modal crosstalk. However, suffering from inevitable coupling among active modes and idle modes, signals may be exposed to distributed impairment in form of inter-mode interference (IMI). In this paper, the generation mechanism of IMI effect is firstly theoretically analyzed. Then numerical simulations are carried out to investigate the impact of IMI accompanied with distributed modal crosstalk (DMC) in sparse-MDM systems. Experimental setup for measuring IMI intensities of 3 non-degenerate LP modes (LP 01 , LP 02 and LP 03 ) in a weakly-coupled 10-LP-mode fiber is established and the measurement results agree well with the theoretical square-law relationship. Finally, the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) penalty related to IMI effect is experimentally investigated for 60 km 3-mode FMF transmission, the experimental results of which show that IMI effect may be a major impairment of sparse-MDM systems. This work is beneficial to practical applications of long-haul MDM techniques.

Abstract:Orthogonal transmission with frequency division multiplexing technique is investigated for next generation optical communication systems. Coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and single-carrier frequency division multiplexing (SCFDM) schemes are compared in combination with polarization-division multiplexing quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) or 16-QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) formats. Multi-granularity transmission with flexible bandwidth can be realized through ultra-dense wavelength division multiplexing (UDWDM) based on the orthogonal technique. The system performance is numerically studied with special emphasis on transmission degradations due to fiber Kerr nonlinearity. Abstract:Mode-division multiplexing (MDM) technique based on few-mode fibers (FMFs) can achieve multiplicative growth in single-fiber capacity by using different linearly polarized (LP) modes or mode groups as spatial channels. However, its deployment is seriously impeded because multiple-input multiple-output digital signal processing (MIMO-DSP) with huge computational load must be adopted to combat intermodal crosstalk for long-haul FMF transmission. In this paper, we present an intermodal-MIMO-free MDM transmission scheme based on weakly coupled multiple-ring-core FMF, which achieves ultralow distributed modal crosstalk (DMC) so that the signal in each LP mode can be independently received by single-LP-mode MIMO-DSP even after hundreds-of-kilometer transmission. Evaluation method for the required DMC levels is proposed and different transmission reaches are investigated by simulation. By adopting an improved method for quantitative DMC measurement, we show that the required DMC level for long-haul transmission is feasible. Finally, we experimentally demonstrate 1800-km LP01/LP02 multiplexed transmission and 525-km LP01/LP21/LP02 multiplexed transmission only adopting 2x2 or 4x4 MIMO-DSP. The proposed scheme may pave the way to practical applications of long-haul MDM techniques for the first time. Abstract:We experimentally investigate digital intra-channel nonlinear impairment compensation and inter-channel crosstalk suppression for 4 × 160.8-Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) polarization division multiplexing quadrature phase shift keying (PDM-QPSK) transmission over 1300-km single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) on a 50-GHz grid with the spectral efficiency of 3.21b/s/Hz, adopting simplified heterodyne coherent detection. By using nonlinear compensation based on DBP with crosstalk suppression based on post filter and maximum likelihood sequence estimation (PF&MLSE), the BER has been improved from 1.0 × 10−3 to 3.5 × 10−4 for 4 × 160.8Gb/s WDM PDM-QPSK with heterodyne detection after 1300km SMF-28 transmission.

Abstract:Weakly-coupled mode division multiplexing (MDM) techniques supporting intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) transmission is a promising candidate to enhance the capacity of short-reach applications such as optical interconnections, in which low-modal-crosstalk mode multiplexers/demultiplexers (MMUX/MDEMUX) are highly desired. In this paper, we firstly propose an all-fiber low-modal-crosstalk orthogonal combine reception scheme for degenerate linearly-polarized (LP) modes, in which signals in both degenerate modes are firstly demultiplexed into the LP01 mode of single-mode fibers, and then are multiplexed into mutually orthogonal LP01 and LP11 modes of a two-mode fiber for simultaneous detection. Then a pair of 4-LP-mode MMUX/MDEMUX consisting of cascaded mode-selective couplers and orthogonal combiners are fabricated with side-polishing processing, which achieve low back-to-back modal crosstalk of lower than-18.51 dB and insertion loss of lower than 3.81 dB for all the 4 modes. Finally, a stable real-time 4 modes x 4 & lambda; x 10 Gb/s MDM-wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission over 20-km few-mode fiber is experimentally demonstrated. Abstract:Mode-division multiplexing (MDM) transmission over few-mode optical fiber has emerged as a promising technology to enhance transmission capacity, in which multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) digital signal processing (DSP) after coherent detection is used to demultiplex the signals. Compared with conventional single-mode systems, MIMO-MDM systems suffer non-recoverable signal degradation induced by mode-dependent loss (MDL). In this paper, the MDL-induced signal degradation in orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) MDM systems is theoretically quantified in terms of mode-average error vector magnitude (EVM) through frequency domain norm analysis. A novel scalar MDL metric is proposed considering the probability distribution of the practical MDM input signals, and a closed-form expression for EVM measured after zero-force (ZF) MIMO equalization is derived. Simulation results show that the EVM estimations utilizing the novel MDL metric remain unbiased for unrepeated links. For a 6 × 100 km 20-mode MDM transmission system, the estimation accuracy is improved by more than 90% compared with that utilizing traditional condition number (CN) based MDL metric. The proposed MDL metric can be used to predict the MDL-induced SNR penalty in a theoretical manner, which will be beneficial for the design of practical MIMO-MDM systems.

Abstract:New transmission techniques for short-reach optical transmission applications especially datacenter interconnections are highly expected to break current bandwidth bottleneck, among which mode division multiplexing (MDM) based on few-mode fiber (FMF) is promising by exploring different linearly-polarized (LP) modes as spatial transmission channels. In this paper, an FMF design utilizing multiple-ring perturbations in fiber core to suppress modal crosstalk during fiber transmission is firstly proposed and a 6-LP-mode double-ring-core (DRC) FMF is fabricated with a high minimum refractive index difference of 1.49 x 10(-3) among all LP modes. Secondly, a novel degenerate-mode-selective coupler (DMSC) converting each degenerate LPlm (l > 0) mode into the LP11 mode in a two-mode fiber is proposed. Then intensity-modulation/direct-detection (IM/DD) MDM transmission scheme without any digital signal processing (DSP) can be realized utilizing mode multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX) consisting of cascaded all-fiber mode-selective couplers (MSC) and DMSCs, in which each degenerate or non-degenerate LP mode is considered as an independent transmission channel. Based on the proposed DRC-FMF and mode MUX/DEMUX, we demonstrate a 4-LP-mode MDM prototype system using commercial single-mode 10-Gbps SFP + modules and 4K video transceivers without any hardware or software modifications. Finally, the intra-LP-mode dispersion effect in a weakly-coupled FMF is analyzed and a modified fixed-analyzer method is proposed for its measurement. Experimental results show that it may be one of the major impairments for IM/DD MDM transmission.

Abstract:The capacity upgrade of short-reach optical fiber transmission has received more and more attention.Spatial division multiplexing provides two new dimensions of fiber core and mode, which can greatly increase the transmission capacity of a single fiber.However, the crosstalk between spatial channels severely limits the practical application of space division multiplexing technology.To address the problem, a weakly-coupled space-division multiplexing fiber was firstly designed, in which perturbed rings were introduced in the core to increase the effective refractive index difference between LP modes.Secondly, an all-fiber mode multiplexer/demultiplexer that could handle non-circularly symmetric degenerate LP modes was proposed, as well as a low insertion loss and low crosstalk fan-in and fan-out devices.Based on the proposed fiber and devices, the low-cost intensity modulation and direct detection were used to implement the short-reach weakly-coupled mode-division-multiplexing and multi-core and few-mode real-time transmission.Finally, the prospective of space-division multiplexing real-time optical transmission technology was discussed.

Abstract:The fundamental performance limits of coherent optical transmission systems can be observed by a simple optimization between the linear noise and the nonlinear noise generated within the system. Optical Phase Conjugation (OPC) is considered to be one of the promising techniques to compensate for optical fiber’s dispersion and nonlinearity that cause crosstalk between signals traveling through long-haul optical transmission systems, nonlinearity compensation can lead to significant information capacity and distance reach expansion of optical fiber transmission links. To get the full benefit from the deployment of OPC in optical transmission systems, a few considerations must be taken into account, such as: power profile symmetry, fiber’s dispersion slope and Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD). In this contribution, we will present our simplified theoretical predictions of optical fiber transmission systems performance that deploy mid-link OPC and multiOPC and we will show that the introduction of multi-OPC in an optical transmission system will minimize the impact of uncompensated/nondeterministic signal-signal nonlinear interactions due to fiber’s PMD and signal-noise interactions. We will show wide range of simulation and experimental results that validate the theoretical predictions of system’s performance for various types of links: dispersion managed, dispersion unmanaged, discretely amplified systems and distributed Raman amplified systems. Abstract:The growing demand for bandwidth requires the increasing of capacity and reach of wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) systems, and simultaneous reducing of cost per bitxkm. In this report, I will at first introduce the 40 Gbit/s transponder and 40x42.8 Gbit/s WDM long-haul transmission experimental system over standard single mode fiber using all-Raman amplification in our laboratory. By optimizing the chirp of electro-absorption modulation and dispersion compensation, 42.8 Gbit/s NRZ transmission over 1200 km standard single mode fiber was achieved. Then our work about the fiber impairments in Nx40 Gbit/s WDM and polarization-division multiplexing (PDM) system will be reviewed. Also the technique to mitigate the impairment will be described. In particular, Electronic equalization used to overcome the distortion caused by inter-symbol interference (ISI) will be reviewed, and its capability of equalization for intra-channel nonlinearity will be discussed.
