Abstract: For dynamic visible light communication (VLC) systems, received optical power fluctuates largely due to the fast movement of VLC terminals. Such fluctuations will cause possible signal clipping and quantization noise at the analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and thus aggravate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and reliability of the communication link. To mitigate this effect, the automatic gain control (AGC) technique is often introduced in the receiver front-end to adaptively adjust the electrical signal strength. In this paper, we provided a VLC front-end analysis considering AGC model. Based on the model, some design principles of AGC are theoretically derivated: the effects of AGC index $m$, AGC maximum gain $g_{max}$ and AGC equilibrium range $DR$. Next, an analog AGC amplifier was carefully implemented and the effectiveness of our AGC modeling was proved through BER experiments. Finally, realtime 25Mb/s on-off-keying (OOK) experiments with AGC function were demonstrated in a dynamic link with different speeds. Experimental results show that the AGC can stabilize the BER performance and improve the system performance in the speed of 1m/s.

Abstract:A novel dimming control scheme, termed as generalized dimming control (GDC), is proposed for visible light communication (VLC) systems. The basic idea of GDC is to exploit adaptively time, spatial and signal domain resources for enhancing communication performance under practical illumination constraints. In particular, to satisfy the illumination constraints, an incremental algorithm for index mapping is first proposed to achieve target optical power and uniform illumination. Next, GDC having the optimal activation pattern is investigated to improve the bit-error rate (BER) performance of VLC. In particular, the BER performance of GDC is analyzed using the union bound technique. Based on the analytical BER bound, the optimal activation pattern of GDC scheme having the minimum BER criterion (GDC-MBER) is obtained by exhaustively searching all conditional pairwise error probabilities. However, since GDC-MBER requires high search complexity, two low-complexity GDC schemes having the maximum free distance criterion (GDC-MFD) are proposed. The first low-complexity GDC-MFD scheme, termed as GDC-MFD1, is derived by a lower bound of the free distance using the Rayleigh-Ritz theorem. The second low-complexity GDC-MFD scheme, termed as GDC-MFD2, is proposed to reduce further the computation by exploiting the time-invariance characteristics of the VLC channel. Simulation and numerical results show that GDC-MBER, GDC-MFD1 and GDC-MFD2 have similar BER performance, and they can achieve more than 3 dB SNR gains compared with conventional dimming control schemes for a BER of ${10^{ - 4}}$ and a dimming level of 50%.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a visible light communication (VLC) system using continuous phase modulation (CPM) and prove its advantage in energy efficiency over orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme. Furthermore, to ensure the feasibility of broadband communications in indoor optical multipath environments, we propose algorithms including linear decomposition-based channel compensation to combat the inter-symbol-interference (ISI) and correlation matrix-based highly power-efficient CPM signal reconstruction to recover the original CPM signal without multipath effects. Additionally, in the signal reconstruction algorithm, a condition-enhanced method is proposed to solve the condition number problem of correlation matrix. The algorithms are verified and evaluated in terms of the normalized mean squared error (NMSE) simulation and bit error rate (BER) experiments. The power efficiency, the fading compensation character promote the proposed CPM transceiver to be a practical VLC candidate.

Abstract:In a practical light emitted diodes (LEDs)-based visible light communication (VLC) system, high-speed transmission is generally limited by the LED bandwidth. To address the bandwidth limitation, a hybrid digital linear and decision-feedback equalization (DFE) is investigated to improve the transmission performance (or spectral efficiency) in the carrier-less amplitude phase modulation (CAP)-based VLC systems. A real-time CAP-VLC transceiver with the hybrid digital equalization is designed, based on which 200 Mb/s transmission is successfully demonstrated over a 15 m VLC link with the commercial red LEDs (bandwidth: 6.5 MHz). In the real-time CAP-VLC system, the baseline wander (BLW) is observed, due to the removal of the low-frequency components with a direct current (DC) block. The BLW effect can be mitigated by increasing the roll-off factor. However, this roll-off factor affects the equalization performance, due to an increased loss in the signal spectrum beyond the system bandwidth. Optimization of the roll-off factor and filter length is required. Experimental results show that, with the optimized real-time transceiver design, the hybrid Wiener/recursive least squares (RLS) and DFE significantly improves the error vector magnitude (EVM) performance compared with the DFE. In addition, the digital signal processing (DSP) complexity is discussed.

Abstract:Recently, visible light communication (VLC) technology has attracted great attention in both academia and industry. In this paper, a spatial modulation (SM) based multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) VLC system with input-dependent noise is investigated. Based on the input-dependent noise, the theoretical symbol error rate (SER) expression is obtained. The SER performance of SM-based MIMO VLC system is analyzed for both input-dependent noise and input-independent noise cases. Considering the trade-off between SER and transmission rate, the successful transmission rate indicator is formulated, which is the product of SER and transmission rate. An optimization problem, whose goal is to maximize the successful transmission rate, is proposed to optimize the modulation order. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the obtained SER expression. Simulations also indicate that the system with larger input-dependent noise tends to have smaller modulation order in order to maximize the successful transmission rate.

Abstract:Visible light communication is a hot topic of wireless communication area which has drawn more attention to be researched. Dft-s ofdm is a main modulation method used in long term evolution (lte) in wireless communication, which is able to reduce the nonlinear limitation in client amplifier. Modulating directly by transmitter led in vlc will cause a strong linear effect which is harmful. As a result, this paper is aimed to do a research to study the anti-linear ability of dft-s ofdm. The study shows that dft-s ofdm is helpful in reducing linear effect and papr. It also shows the simulation and experiment results to make sure the system can work safely and precisely in a certain situation. We make a conclusion that less number of subcarriers can help to lower papr and bit error ratio (ber).

Abstract:The impulse response and frequency response of indoor visible light communication diffuse channels are characterized experimentally in this paper. Both the short pulse technique and frequency sweep technique are adopted for experimental investigation. The iterative site-based modeling is also carried out to simulate the channel impulse response, and good conformity is observed between the experimental and simulation results. Finally, the impact of receiver pointing angles and field of view on the channel 3dB bandwidth is investigated.

Abstract:The scintillation caused by the atmosphere turbulence and strong background noise from sunlight and other lighting equipment are two main problems in visible light communication (VLC) atmosphere transmission system.In order to overcome the channel fading effect caused by the atmosphere turbulence and the noise interference caused by the strong background light,VLC atmosphere channel with strong background noise is modeled.Diversity receiving technologies are utilized to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of the system at the same transmitting power.According to the channel model,outdoor long-distance VLC system based on intensity detection pulse position modulation (PPM) in turbulence atmosphere channel using diversity receiving technologies is fimally set up.In our simulation,the system bandwidth is 400 MHz and bit rate is 800 Mb/s.The BER performances of three diversity receiving technologies:maximal ratio combing (MRC),equal gain combing (EGC),selection combing (SC) are also compared.The results show that under the same transmitting power,the improvement of BER performance by MRC is the best,followed by EGC and SC is poor.Taking 7％ forward error correction(FEC) as the BER threshold,the required LED transmitting power is greatly decreased with MRC.Furthermore,with the increase of the number of diversity branches,the BER performance is better.

Abstract:High-speed light emitting diode (LED) based visible light communication (VLC) system is restricted by the limited LED bandwidth, low detector sensitivity, and linear and nonlinear distortions. Thus, single-and two-cascaded constant-resistance symmetrical bridged-T amplitude hardware pre-equalizers, carrierless amplitude and phase (CAP) modulation, and a three-stage hybrid postequalizer are investigated to increase transmission data rate for a high-speed LED-based VLC system. The schemes utilized by the hybrid postequalizer aremodified cascaded multimodulus algorithm, Volterra series based nonlinear compensation algorithm and decision-directed least mean square algorithm. With these technologies, we successfully implement high-speed CAP32, CAP64, and CAP128 VLC experimental system over 1-m free space transmission with bit error rate under the hard decision-forward error correction threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3). System performance improvement employing these key technologies is also validated through experimental demonstration. With the superposition of each stage of the hybrid postequalizer, system performance will be improved. And utilizing two-cascaded hardware pre-equalizer will provide more accurate channel compensation than a single pre-equalizer.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) has been recognized as one promising candidate to satisfy the unprecedented throughput requirement of near-future mobile wireless networks. Due to the directional Lambertian optical beam-based design approach, multiple visible light transmitters are essential to provide sufficient coverage. However, these schemes could not meet spatial compactness requirements and fail to match harsher constrained transmitters or even single transmitter scenarios. To address these challenges, this article proposes a non-Lambertian optical beam switching-based dynamic coverage scheme for VLC mobility enhancement. Unlike the conventional Lambertian beam-based technique paradigm, the proposed scheme tentatively utilizes the commercially available asymmetric non-Lambertian beam to configure the VLC links with azimuth selectivity. Numerical results show that, for the solo visible light transmitter scenario, compared with the approximate 39.22 dB average signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the conventional Lambertian configuration, up to 5.27 dB average SNR gain is derived through the proposed dynamic scheme with four candidate non-Lambertian beams. Moreover, this potential gain will be further enhanced to about 13.24 dB when up to four visible light transmitters are available.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive bias entropy-loading (ABEL) scheme to further approach the capacity limit of indoor multipath visible light communication (VLC) systems. Numerical results suggest that the proposed ABEL scheme outperforms traditional entropy-loading (EL) in terms of achievable information rate (AIR). Within 50 MHz bandwidth, ABEL can realize 7.5 Mb/s AIR improvement with only 11.1% forward error correction overhead.

Abstract:Recently, visible light communication (VLC) has become a hot topic owing to its advantages, such as high security, high capacity, and antielectromagnetic interference. VLC has become a potential candidate for indoor access networks due to the feasibility of combining illumination and communication. However, intersymbol interference and random phase rotation induced by the transmission channel will decrease the system performance. Traditional constant modulus algorithm (CMA) performs well in converging constellation, but random phase rotation still exists since CMA is insensitive to phase. We demonstrate an optical fiber and visible light integrated communication system. 960-Mbps multiband geometrically shaping (GS) quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM)-8 transmission is realized. Modified learning vector quantization is employed after CMA equalization to mitigate the impairment induced by both optical fiber and visible light channel. Experimental results indicate the feasibility of the proposed method. The Q factor of GS QAM-8 could be enhanced by 5.98 dB with the proposed method. Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) attracts increasing attention in intelligent transport systems (ITSs) in recent years, since light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are used as common light source. In this paper, the maximum capacity of VLC channel in ITSs with commercially available LEDs and photodiodes is investigated using the carrierless amplitude-phase (CAP) modulation technique. 312.5Mbps CAP transmission is successfully demonstrated over 10m transmission with a vehicle LED that has a 3dB bandwidth of 2.5MHz.
Improvement of Ber Performance by Tilting Receiver Plane for Indoor Visible Light Communications with Input-Dependent Noise

Abstract:In this paper, an indoor visible light communication (VLC) system with the input-dependent noise is considered. In the system, the main noise is caused by Gaussian noise, however, with a noise variance depending on the current input signal strength. In the presence of the input-dependent noise, the theoretical expression of the bit error rate (BER) for the VLC using on-off keying is derived. Based on the derived BER, an optimization problem is formulated to improve the BER performance by tilting the receiver plane. The proposed optimization problem is proven to be a convex optimization problem, which can be efficiently solved by using the specialized solver such as the CVX toolbox for MATLAB. To verify the accuracy of the derived expression of the BER, all theoretical results are thoroughly confirmed by using the Monte-Carlo simulations. Moreover, simulation results show that the larger the variance of the input-dependent noise is, the worse the BER performance becomes. Additionally, the BER performance can be dramatically improved by tilting the receiver plane properly.
Mitigation of Strong Background Radiation with Attenuation Diversity for Vehicular Visible Light Communication

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFD-M)based outdoor visible light communication (VLC)technology has a broad prospect in the future intelligent transportation systems (ITSs), but it's prone to the problem of receiving signal saturation distortion. So we proposed a receiver architecture with an adjustable attenuator to mitigate the saturation distortion caused by strong solar irradiance in a commercial avalanche photodiode (APD)module. The simulation results show that the proposed receiver architecture has a good performance in the outdoor VLC system for both asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM)modulation and direct current-biased optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM)modulation. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme has excellent performance in practical systems while utilizing DCO-OFDM modulation, and the bit error rate (BER)is reduced from 0.3 to 10 -3 under strong background light interference, which verified the feasibility of our proposed receiver architecture.

Abstract:We design and realize an indoor visible light communication (VLC) network based on the time division mechanism to mitigate inter-cell interference, which can support flexible access and resource allocation of multiple mobile users in the ultra-dense attocell layout. WiFi is adopted for the uplink feedback, including the user ID and channel state information. After receiving feedback, the central coordinator is capable of performing mobile user access, localization, handoff control and resource allocation. The data sent from the central coordinator is buffered at the distributed base stations within the attocells, and then transmitted to the scheduled user by downlink VLC. A real-time experimental platform including three attocells and two users is built up to evaluate the performance of the proposed VLC network. Furthermore, off-line measurements are conducted to find the optimal operating point of the system. Experimental results show that the bit error rate (BER) of the real-time transmission is below 6.3091 × 10 -5 , and the frame loss rates (FLRs) of static user and mobile user are about 0.1% and 8.2%, respectively.

Abstract:Implementing dimming control in visible light communication (VLC) systems often involves a trade-off that reduces data rates. To address this, we propose a hybrid visible light (VL)/Infrared (IR) communication scheme that leverages pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) symbols in both VL and IR spectra, alternating them within pulse width modulation (PWM) "ON" and "OFF" slots. By efficiently using PWM "OFF" slots, the achievable data rate drop due to dimming is mitigated without affecting illumination. To ensure synchronization during the switch between VL and IR links, we design real-time dimming control state machines at both ends of the link, enhancing link stability. Additionally, we develop an adaptive hybrid frame structure that dynamically adjusts the length of transmitted information as the duty cycle continuously changes, ensuring uninterrupted communication. Experimental results from implementation using field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA) demonstrate real-time transmission under precise full-range dimming control, dynamically ranging from 1 to 0 with a resolution of 0.0053, maintaining a consistent 10 Mb/s data rate at bit error rates (BERs) lower than 3.4 × 10−4 and 20 Mb/s at BERs lower than 7.0 × 10−3 within a link range of 0.53 m without light concentration at the transmitter. Compared to baseline VLC, our system achieves a 100% data rate improvement at a duty cycle of 0.5, and supports stable data transmission even in low-light conditions.
