Abstract:Optical absorbers with dynamic tuning features are able to flexibly control the absorption performance, which offers a good platform for realizing optical switching, filtering, modulating, etc. Here, we propose a thermally tunable broadband absorber applying a patterned plasmonic metasurface with thermo-chromic vanadium dioxide（VO 2 ） spacers. An actively tunable absorption bandwidth and peak resonant wavelength in the region from the near-to mid-infrared（NMIR） are simultaneously achieved with the insulating–metallic phase transition of VO 2 .Moreover, the scalable unit cell, which is composed of multi-width sub-cells, provides a new freedom to further manipulate（i.e., broaden or narrow） the absorption bandwidth while maintaining a high relative absorption bandwidth and efficient absorbance at the same time. For both transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic polarizations, the proposed nanostructure exhibits a high absorption over a wide angular range up to 60°. This method holds a promising potential for versatile utilizations in optical integrated devices, NMIR photodetection, thermalemitters, smart temperature control systems, and so forth.

Abstract:A dual-broadband absorption metamaterial based on a composite structure consisting of metal and vanadium dioxide is designed and analyzed. By controlling the temperature of vanadium dioxide, the absorption band of the device can be manipulated. At T = 300 K, before the VO2 phase transition, the designed structure can achieve broadband absorption. Results indicate that the absorption rate can exceed 90% in the broad spectral range of 1.375-2.087THz. In the case of T = 350 K, VO2 transforms into a metallic state, and the absorption band is transferred to 2.6-7.03 THz. Especially, the structure is insensitive to the polarization angle of the incident wave, which is beneficial for maintaining stable absorption performance when the incident angle is less than 45 degrees. The proposed absorber can be applied to many other fields such as modulation devices, terahertz switching, and power harvesting fields.

Abstract:Based on the phase transition of vanadium dioxide(VO2), an ultra-broadband tunable terahertz metamaterial absorber is proposed. The absorber consists of bilayer VO2 square ring arrays with different sizes, which are completely wrapped in Topas and placed on gold substrate. The simulation results show that the absorption greater than 90% has frequencies ranging from 1.63 THz to 12.39 THz, which provides an absorption frequency bandwidth of 10.76 THz, and a relative bandwidth of 153.5%. By changing the electrical conductivity of VO2, the absorption intensity can be dynamically adjusted between 4.4% and 99.9%. The physical mechanism of complete absorption is elucidated by the impedance matching theory and field distribution. The proposed absorber has demonstrated its properties of polarization insensitivity and wide-angle absorption, and therefore has a variety of application prospects in the terahertz range, such as stealth, modulation, and sensing.

Abstract:The dynamic tunable broadband perfect absorber based on vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ) is proposed in this paper. And the VO 2 conductivity can be changed by temperature, thus changing the absorption characteristics of the absorber. Under normal incident conditions, absorption is more than 90% of the absorber in the range of 5.8–17.2 THz (THz), with an average absorption rate of more than 96%. And impedance matching theory and magnetic resonance theory are used to illustrate the mechanism of operation. The effect of the incidence angle on the absorption performance was studied, and the results show that the absorbers still maintain excellent absorption when the incidence angle is less than 45∘ . In addition, the absorption characteristics of the absorber working in water are also studied. We demonstrate that the absorber's absorption is more than 90% in the range of 5–18 THz with an absorption bandwidth of 13 THz at a water depth of 5.2 μm . And by adjusting the VO 2 conductivity, the average absorption rate can be adjusted from 2.5% to 96.1% with a water depth of 5.2 μm . The proposed structure has potential significant applications in the design of heat emitters, optical switches, cloaking devices, and energy harvesting devices.

Abstract:We demonstrate a broadband and switchable THz metamaterial absorber by utilizing the phase transition of VO2, which is a stacked structure composed of VO2 periodic array, dielectric layer, VO2 film, Au periodic array, dielectric layer and Au reflective layer, respectively. The absorption band from 0.76 THz to 0.86 THz at room temperature can be changed into the absorption band from 1.12 THz to 1.25 THz when temperature increases above the phase change temperature of VO2, with the absorptivity in both bands over 90%. Furthermore, the effective medium theory is introduced to explain the perfect absorption mechanism. Such absorber can work well over a wide range of incidence around 40°. Thickness of the absorber is only about one twentieth of the working wavelength. The proposed structure can be applied to absorbers working at other frequencies.

Abstract:A scheme for a terahertz metamaterial absorber is designed which consists of a periodic array of vanadium dioxide (VO2) placed on a continuous gold film separated by a dielectric layer. Taking full advantage of the phase change property of VO2, which can be transformed from a metallic state to an insulating state, the absorber not only has ultra-wideband absorption, but also has adjustable absorption intensity. According to the simulation results, when VO2 is in the metallic state, a resonance bandwidth with absorption rate greater than 90% can be reached up to 7.26 THz, from 3.52 THz to 10.78 THz. Its relative absorption bandwidth is 101.54%, which is much larger than previously reported broadband absorbers. Physical mechanism of the ultra-wideband absorption is discussed by analyzing near-field distributions of absorption peaks selected on absorption curve. Size variations of the VO2 array provide the ability to modulate absorption performance, especially the absorption bandwidth. When VO2 is in the insulating state, the simulation results show that near-perfect reflection (or near-zero absorption) is obtained, the maximum modulation depth of 97.1% is achieved. The extinction ratio of tunable broadband metamaterial absorber is also estimated. The proposed absorption device with ultra-wideband and tunable absorption features could have great potential for applications in terahertz band.

Abstract:The recent rise of active materials offers new opportunities for dynamically tunable metamaterial devices. However, metamaterial devices with a dynamically switchable function are in high demand. Inspired by previous studies, a dynamically switchable and tunable bifunctional THz (THz) metamaterial absorber based on vanadium dioxide (VO2) and graphene is proposed and investigated in this paper. Using the phase transition properties of VO2, the switchable performance between broadband near-perfect absorption and multiband near-perfect absorption can be achieved. When VO2 is in the metallic state, the designed metamaterial absorber acts as a broadband near-perfect absorber with more than 90% absorption in the frequency range from 2.6 THz to 7.5 THz. Alternatively, the designed metamaterial absorber with the same geometry can be transformed into a tunable multiband absorber when VO2 is converted to the insulated state. The performance of the absorber is analyzed by the multiple interference theory (MIT), which is in good agreement with the numerical simulation results. Due to the high symmetry of the structure, the presented absorber exhibits excellent polarization insensitivity and wide incident-angle stability, which opens a direction to design a new type of multifunctional metamaterial devices in the THz regime. Structural Optimization and Performance Analysis of a Tunable Ultra‐broadband Terahertz Absorber

Abstract:Herein, an isotropic dynamic and actively tunable ultra‐wideband metamaterial ideal absorber with simple vanadium dioxide (VO2) structure is proposed and numerically simulated in the terahertz region. The absorber consists of two coplanar resonant rings based on VO2 and a metal base layer separated by a dielectric spacer. The simulation results show that the designed absorber can achieve an excellent absorption rate of more than 90% and an absorption bandwidth of 3.50 THz in the frequency band from 2.47 THz to 5.97 THz by optimizing the geometry. By changing the conductivity of VO2 from 0 to 2000 Ω−1 cm−1, the absorption peak of the absorber can be continuously and dynamically tuned from 3.90% to 99.75%. Its absorption performance is much better than that of previously reported VO2‐based absorbers. The geometric structure is optimized by wave interference cancellation theory and impedance ‐matching theory, so as to achieve better absorption bandwidth and efficiency. The electric field distribution and the energy loss density are further discussed to explore the mechanism of the absorber. In addition, the terahertz absorber has wide‐angle absorption effect for both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) waves, and the absorption spectrum is independent of incident polarization.
Active Broadband Absorber Based on Phase-Change Materials Optimized via Evolutionary Algorithm

Abstract:This article proposes a temperature-controlled absorber based on VO2, which consists of five layers: a disk-shaped VO2 layer array, a dielectric layer, a circular hole VO2 array, a SiO2 layer, and a gold substrate from top to bottom. We optimized the thickness of the other four layers of the absorber, except for the gold layer, using PSO. After ten iterations, we determined that the optimal parameters for the top-to-bottom four-layer thicknesses were 0.183 μm, 0.452 μm, 0.557 μm and 1.994 μm. At this point, our absorber reached the optimal absorption parameters, and we plotted the absorption spectrum under these conditions. We found that the absorption rate at 29.1–47.2 THz was higher than 90%, and the absorption bandwidth was as high as 18.1 THZ. This frequency band covers most of the atmospheric window area (23–37.5 THz), so it will have good practicality. At 30.8 THz and 43.12 THz, there were perfect absorption peaks with absorption rates of 99.99% and 99.99%, respectively. We explained the cause of absorption from the perspective of electric field, and then we studied the change in the absorption curve of the absorber when the temperature of VO2 changed, and we can directly observe the changes in the electric field to explain this. Finally, we can tune the bandwidth and absorption rate of the absorber by changing the structure of the VO2 pattern. After comparing with other absorbers developed in recent years, our absorber still has good competitiveness, and we believe that our solution is expected to have outstanding performance in fields such as photothermal conversion and thermal stealth in the future.

Abstract:Metamaterial perfect absorbers in the terahertz band are attracting more and more attention. Pure narrowband absorbers as well as broadband absorbers have been proposed one after another in recent years. However, absorbers that can achieve both narrow-band absorption and broadband absorption have hardly been reported. To meet more practical needs, we propose a terahertz metamaterial perfect absorber that combines ultra-broadband and narrowband based on the phase transition properties of vanadium dioxide (VO2). Its main structure consists of a metal ring and four VO2 discs, and the absorber can be flexibly switched between ultra-broadband and narrowband absorption by adjusting the ambient temperature. The resonator consisting of metal rings and VO2 discs are mainly responsible for the formation of absorption peaks. A detailed explanation is given by means of magnetic resonance theory and the impedance matching principle. Compared to recent reports, our design offers a significant improvement in absorption rate and bandwidth and is also flexible in terms of tuning. Moreover, as the phase transition temperature of VO2 is only slightly higher than room temperature, there are almost no limitations for experimental and practical applications. Therefore, our design will have significant applications in modulation, sensing, energy harvesting, switching devices, etc.
Thermally Tunable Vanadium-Dioxide-based Broadband Metamaterial Absorber with Switchable Functionality in the Terahertz Band

Abstract:In this paper, a thermally tunable broadband metamaterial absorber, with switchable functionality in the terahertz band, consisted of periodically arranged vanadium dioxide (VO2) and a gold film separated by a layer of polyimide is reported, which is capable of switching from absorber to reflector through the phase change property of VO2. When VO2 is in the metallic state, three near-perfect absorption peaks localized at 3.48 THz, 5.09 THz and 7.05 THz are obtained, and the combination of them gives rise to a broadband absorption, more than 90% of absolute absorption bandwidth reaches 4.35 THz (3.1–7.45 THz) with a relative absorption bandwidth of 82.46%. When VO2 is in the dielectric state, it can switch from near-perfect broadband absorption to near-perfect reflection with the maximum intensity modulation of 92.4%. The broadband absorption is insensitive to polarization of incident beam due to symmetrical structure design and exhibits excellent tolerance for large oblique incidence angle. In addition, size changes of patterned VO2 array structure provides a large impact on the absorption performance of the thermally tunable device, especially the absorption bandwidth. Our proposed device is expected to have outstanding prospects in terahertz thermal imaging, communications, and temperature-controlled metasurface.
Tunable Broadband-Narrowband and Dual-Broadband Terahertz Absorber Based on a Hybrid Metamaterial Vanadium Dioxide and Graphene

Abstract:We propose a functionally tunable terahertz (THz) metamaterial absorber, which has the switching performance between broadband-narrowband and dual-broadband near-perfect absorption due to the phase transition of Vanadium dioxide (VO2) and the tunable electrical property of graphene. The switching absorption properties are verified by computer simulation technology (CST) microwave study. The simulation results show that when VO2 is in the metallic phase, over 90% broadband absorption is realized in the 3.85–6.32 THz range. When the VO2 is in the insulating phase, the absorber shows quadruple narrowband absorption. By changing the Fermi level of graphene and the conductivity of VO2, the low-frequency broadband of 3.85–6.32 THz can be switched to the high-frequency broadband of 6.92–8.92 THz, and the absorber can be switched from a quadruple narrowband to a nearly singlefold narrowband. In addition, the proposed absorber is insensitive to polarization due to its symmetry and wide incident angle. The design may have potential applications in the THz range, such as switches, electromagnetic shielding, cloaking objects, filtering, sensing, and so on.

Abstract:For the terahertz band, in this paper, we theoretically propose an absorber that integrated Dirac Semimetal (BDS) and Vanadium Dioxide (VO 2 ) smoothly into together. The dynamic connection between the conductivity of the Dirac semimetal and the Fermi level gives our absorber dynamic tunable properties. On the other side, with the continuous increase of VO 2 temperature, its conductivity also changed dramatically, the variation value of close to 3 ∼ 4 orders of magnitude, which push VO 2 Change reversibly from the metal state to the insulating state. This feature gives our absorbers a flexible, adjustable and reversible switching function. We used frequency-domain finite element decomposition algorithm to simulate, analyze and calculate the absorption performance of the absorber in the extent of terahertz band. The results show that there are two excellent bone absorption at 4.804THz and 7.364THz , and the absorption rates are above 95 %, at 95.65 % and 99.89 % respectively. We also analyzed the variation of the structural parameters of the absorber with its absorption, when the absorber is open, and the results proved the rationality of the structural parameters we designed. Finally, in order to discuss its working condition in different environments, we also calculated its refractive index sensitivity (S). Our work provides a new idea for the study of THz absorbers. Meanwhile, also offered a proposal for the multiple metamaterials conjunction with absorber and the design of new switches.

Abstract:A dynamically adjustable terahertz (THz) broadband absorber based on a vanadium dioxide (VO2) hybrid metamaterial is theoretically designed. During the design, we first consider working frequency, bandwidth, excitation method and fabrication process. And then, a commercialized full wave electromagnetic (EM) calculation software CST microwave 2019 based on finite integration technology is used to simulate and optimize the performance of the device. Due to the device is excited by light, it consists of a top layer of VO2 oblique-split ring-resonator (OSRR) array, a polyimide (PI) spacer and a bottom metal film. The simulation results show that, when the VO2 changes from insulating state to metal state under light stimulus, the absorption increases from 3% to over 90%. Meanwhile, when the VO2 is in metallic phase, the bandwidth of absorption greater than 90% reaches to 1.0 THz and the relative bandwidth is about 83%. The potential applications of the device are active EM stealth, THz wave detection and thermal imaging. This work paves a new way for simply constructing a low-cost dynamically adjustable THz broadband absorber.
Multi-controlled Broadband Terahertz Absorber Engineered with VO2-integrated Borophene Metamaterials

Abstract:We demonstrated a dynamically controlled broadband terahertz (THz) metamaterials absorber, which composed of continuous vanadium dioxide (VO2) film, a silicon dioxide (SiO2) layer, and a structured borophene layer. When VO2 is in its metallic state and the armchair direction of borophene along x axis, the proposed absorber realizes an absorptivity peak value of 100% at 7.2 THz for y polarized normal incidence, and an absorptivity peak value of 79% at 8.9 THz for x polarized normal incidence. It is the anisotropic property of borophene that results in the absorptivity difference for x and y polarization in the whole frequency range. Simulated electric field distribution and surface current oscillation has been extracted to explain the physical mechanism of THz wave absorption. Through modifying the geometric parameters of metamaterials microstructure, the broadband absorption performance can be tailored passively. Additionally, the proposed metamaterials absorber has been actively controlled by manipulating the carrier density of borophene and the conductivity of VO2, respectively. The absorptivity can be switched from 45% to 100% at 7.2 THz by changing the carrier density of borophene, and from 22% to 100% at 7.2 THz by changing the conductivity of VO2. Moreover, the proposed absorber exhibits an excellent operation tolerance for oblique TE and TE polarized incidence from 0° to 60°. This work provides a novel approach to design dynamically controlled broadband THz absorbers, which reveals promising applications in the devices of optoelectronic switches, cloakings, filters, and sensors, etc.

It features two methods for absorption adjustment: altering the Fermi energy level of BDS to modify the resonant frequency of the absorption peaks and utilizing the phase change of VO2 to regulate the absorption rate of the peaks. In addition, its rotational symmetric design ensures strong polarization-insensitivity. The simulation results demonstrate the presence of two narrowband absorption peaks and one mini-broadband absorption peak within the frequency range of 6.0-9.5 THz, all with absorption rates exceeding 90%. We provide an explanation of the absorption mechanism of the device, employing the relative impedance theory and localized surface plasmon resonance to analyze its electric field distribution. We also defined the refractive index sensitivity (S), which is SI = 378 GHz per RIU and SIII = 204 GHz per RIU. Our device possesses high sensitivity and two methods of adjusting absorption modes, which endow it with advantages in the fields of metamaterial absorbers, intelligent switch, and optical sensors.

Abstract:In the past decade, metamaterial absorber has been attracting great attention and making huge progress. Most of previous metamaterial absorbers are working with a narrow band. Some efforts to realize broadband absorber have been made from microwave, terahertz to optical frequencies, which often includes multiple resonatorswith different sizes or multilayer structure with different geometrical dimensions. The configurations of these designs are not simple, and they require some complicated fabrication procedures. Meanwhile, the position of absorption peak and working intensity are usually fixed once the structure of metamaterial absorber is fabricated. Here a new isotropic tunable absorber is presentedwith a simple vanadium dioxide structure in the terahertz region. By adjusting the geometrical size, simulation shows that our design under normal incidence can achieve broadband absorptance > 90% with a central frequency of 1.815 THz in the frequency band of 1.08-2.55 THz. Working intensity of the proposed absorber can be tuned from 1.3% to near 100% by changing the conductivity of vanadium dioxide from 0 Omega(-1) cm(-1) to 2000 Omega(-1) cm(-1). The obtained absorption spectrum is independent of incident polarization, and absorptance has a good performance when incident angle varies from 0 degrees to 45 degrees. The proposed design may be useful for promising applications in stealth technology, thermal emitter, and terahertz detection.
