Abstract:Terahertz (THz) communication is considered as a promising technology for the Earth-space application due to its high potential of supporting large data capacity. However, THz wave suffers extreme attenuation from absorption of water vapor (WV) molecules in the propagation path. In this work, we present a theoretical model and analyze the capacities of both inter-satellite and geostationary satellite-to-Earth station (GEO-ES) opto-electronic links operating in the 100-500 GHz band within low- and mid-latitude regions. In our work, THz frequency windows in the 140, 220, 340, and 410 GHz bands with relatively low atmospheric loss are selectively used, targeting a data capacity of 10 Gbps per gigahertz. Our analysis indicates that, in the low-latitude regions, due to high water vapor density (WVD), transmitting and receiving antennas with extremely high gains are required. On the contrary, the mid-latitude regions require less power due to comparatively lower WVD. Moreover, due to seasonal variation in the mid-latitude regions, the requirement of link power budget is tens of decibels less in winter as compared to summer. The results suggest that the establishment of GEO-ES THz links in low- and mid-latitude regions is more realistic in the sub-THz bands, such as 140 and 220 GHz, while the potential of using higher carrier frequencies above 300 GHz for inter-satellite THz links, due to the absence of WV-induced absorption, is supported.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) communication is considered a favorable technology for future non-terrestrial high data-rate applications due to huge bandwidth available. However, THz signals suffer from scattering loss due to clouds, rain, and snow, along with water vapor attenuation in the path, particularly when establishing a geostationary-satellite-to-earth-station (GEO-ES) THz link. In this work, we theoretically analyze the effect of snow and rain particle scattering on the communication capacity of GEO-ES links in the selective THz bands (140GHz, 220GHz, and 345 GHz), and evaluate the data capacity of a GEO-ES opto-electronic link in the mid-latitude regions. The analysis results show that under the cloud and dry snow scenarios, the capacity has some potential to support reasonable data rates in the 140 and 220 GHz bands for a GEO-ES link.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive model to study the atmospheric channel impairments within the low-and mid-latitude regions for the geostationary satellite-to-Earth-station (GEO-ES) links in the selective terahertz (THz) bands (140, 220, 345, and 410 GHz), in terms of dispersion, turbulence loss, as well as atmospheric attenuation in different seasons. Our analysis shows that dispersion effect in the channel above 300 GHz causes serious performance degradation in the low-latitude (LL) regions compared to mid-latitude regions, resulting in a need for a higher signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) to achieve an expected bit-error-rate of, e.g., 10(-3). On the other hand, the GEO-ES link budget requirement becomes more stagnant due to turbulence loss in the LL regions compared to mid-latitude regions. In addition, seasonal variations investigation indicates that an improvement of 2- to 5-dB SNR can be obtained in the mid-latitude regions during winter. The influence of channel impairments on 16-QAM performance in an optoelectronic THz link with slant path geometry is analyzed as an example, and our results suggest that GEO-ES links operating in the 140- and 220-GHz bands are more foreseeably realistic in the low- and mid-latitude regions, whereas the 345-GHz band also shows a good potential for the future Earth-satellite THz links with high data capacity. Abstract:In this paper, the ergodic channel capacity is analyzed for a hybrid satellite-terrestrial single frequency network (SFN), which consists of a satellite (the source node), a mobile terminal (the destination node), and several gap fillers (the relay nodes) on the ground. The satellite-relay (S-R) link and the satellite-destination (S-D) link experience independent Rician fading, and the relay-destination (R-D) link experiences Nakagami-tn fading. Based on the classical conclusions in multipath fading channels, the exact closed-form expression of the ergodic channel capacity for a hybrid satellite-terrestrial SFN with the decode-and-forward cooperative protocol is derived. The numerical results agree well with the simulation results. As the total transmit power of all nodes is assumed to be limited, the performance of hybrid satellite-terrestrial SFN is better than that of the no-relay system when the S-D link is in heavy-fading.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) technology is recognized as an important solution for future high-capacity wireless access, which is expected to support a flexible and broadband wireless backhaul network. However, the THz links would suffer from severe loss and distortions due to the atmospheric effects at the earth-ground, including absorption attenuation and phase shift. In this paper, we analyze the attenuation of the line-by-line absorption with the Van Vleck-Weisskopf (VVW) and the Lorentz theories, and investigate the continuum absorption using the millimeter-wave propagation (MPM) model, where the line-by-line and continuum absorption form the THz atmospheric attenuation. In addition, the phase shift of the THz signals induced by wireless propagation is also analyzed.

Abstract:Broadband satellite communications can enable a plethora of applications in customer services, global nomadic coverage and disaster prediction and recovery. Terahertz (THz) band is envisioned as a key satellite communication technology due to its very broad bandwidth, astrophysical observation advantages and device maturing in recent years. In this paper, a massive-antenna-array-enabled THz satellite communication system is proposed to be established in Tanggula, Tibet, where the average altitude is 5.068 km and the mean-clear-sky precipitable water vapor (PWV) is as low as 1.31 mm. In particular, a link budget analysis (LBA) framework is developed for THz space communications, considering unique THz channel properties and massive antenna array techniques. Moreover, practical siting conditions are taken into account, including the altitude, PWV, THz spectral windows, rain and cloud factors. On the basis of the developed link budget model, the massive antenna array model, and the practical parameters in Tanggula, the performances of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and capacity are evaluated. The results illustrate that 1Tbit/s is attainable in the 0.275—0.37 THz spectral window in Tanggula, by using an antenna array of the size 64.

Abstract:Small satellites have shorter development cycles and lower costs than the traditional satellites in low-earth orbits (LEOs) and geostationary orbits (GEOs). These advantages and the ultra-wide spectrum availability in the Terahertz (THz) band enable profound potentials for inter-satellite links (ISLs) to achieve ultra-high throughput in both near-Earth and deep-space orbits. In this paper, the ISL channels at THz band are characterized and their link capacity is analyzed. First, the propagation channel effects in both Earth's upper atmosphere and deep space are investigated to demonstrate the feasibility of THz band for ISLs. Second, an orbital perturbation model for satellite formation flying is proposed and analyzed with actual ephemeris information. Finally, a channel model is developed to investigate the diversity in both polarization and frequency domain for THz band inter-small-satellite communications. Our numerical results demonstrate that: 1) the ionospheric plasma does not affect the THz band signal propagation in near-Earth orbits; 2) the beam misalignment loss can be characterized by orbital perturbation factors; and 3) the ISLs in THz band can utilize the diversity techniques to achieve high throughput in both near-Earth and deep-space links.

Link Budget Analysis for Free-Space Optical Satellite Networks

Abstract:Free-space optical satellite networks (FSOSNs) will employ free-space optical links between satellites and between satellites and ground stations, and the link budget for optical inter-satellite links and optical uplink/downlink is analyzed in this paper. The satellites in these FSOSNs will have limited energy and thereby limited power, and we investigate the effect of link distance and link margin on optical inter-satellite link transmission power, and the effect of slant distance, elevation angle, and link margin on optical uplink/downlink transmission power. We model these optical links and compute the results for various parameters. We observe that the transmission power increases when the link distance increases for inter-satellite and uplink/downlink communications, while the transmission power decreases when the elevation angle increases for uplink/downlink transmission. We also observe an inverse relationship between link margin and link distance. Furthermore, we highlight some practical insights and design guidelines gained from this analysis.

Performance Analysis of Outdoor THz Links under Mixture Gamma Fading with Misalignment

Abstract:The precision of link-level theoretical performance analysis for emerging wireless communication paradigms is critical. Recent studies have demonstrated the excellent fitting capabilities of the mixture gamma (MG) distribution in representing small-scale fading in outdoor terahertz (THz)-band scenarios. Our study establishes an in-depth performance analysis for outdoor point-to-point THz links under realistic configurations, incorporating MG small-scale fading combined with the misalignment effect. We derive closed-form expressions for the bit-error probability, outage probability, and ergodic capacity. Furthermore, we conduct an asymptotic analysis of these metrics at high signal-to-noise ratios and derive the necessary convergence conditions. Simulation results, leveraging precise measurement-based channel parameters in various configurations, closely align with the derived analytical equations.

Abstract:The atmospheric absorption effect greatly increases the transmission loss of terahertz (THz) waves, which limits the transmission distance. In this article, with the support of sufficient antenna gain, a series of high-frequency THz transmission windows in the ground-satellite link are presented. First, the more ideal ground-based site is determined. Based on the path loss model and the layered transmission theory, the total path loss is obtained. Combined with signal transmit power, antenna gain, signal-to-noise ratio, and noise power, total usable bandwidths and transmission windows in the 0.2–15 THz corresponding to antenna gain from 0 to 100 dBi are given. By taking the high-altitude platform as a relay link, the usable transmission windows are also given. The first six transmission windows are identified as [0.4776–0.48645 THz], [0.4906–0.49975 THz], [0.6618–0.6811 THz], [12.1015–12.10355 THz], [12.10425–12.11285 THz], and [12.11505–12.14355 THz] bands against 100 dBi gain near 1 and 10 THz bands, respectively. Furthermore, the influence of ice clouds on the transmission characteristics is analyzed. The additional attenuation in the partial usable atmospheric window frequency range can reach 1.84 dB typical, which is directly related to the effective radius and shape of particles.

Abstract:The explosive growth of the data traffic in future satellite communications can be leveraged by exploiting higher unlicensed spectrum band. In particular, Terahertz (THz) communication has been considered as a promising solution, since it can provide tens of GHz bandwidth. In addition, massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) with a very large antenna array can be used in THz communications to provide large array gain to compensate for severe signal attenuation. To this end, this paper analyzes a terahertz MIMO channel modeling and simulation method for massive antenna array based satellite-ground communications. Taking into account the molecular absorption noise, transmission path loss, and molecular reradiation effects of the terahertz channels under a variety of typical weather models, we evaluate the bit error rates (BERs) for different frequencies, communication distances and signal strengths. Numerical results validate the feasibility of the proposed modeling approach.

Abstract:The satellite-to-ground laser communication link plays a crucial role in addressing the technical bottleneck of high-speed information transmission between satellite and ground networks. However, the impact of atmospheric channel conditions poses challenges to the link performance. To overcome these challenges, this paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the characteristics and influencing factors of the satellite-to-ground laser communication link. It summarizes methods for optimizing the transmission performance of the link and proposes approaches for optimizing, monitoring, and predicting the link performance through factors such as the optimization of ground station quantity and location, link availability, link transmission quality, and adaptive coding and modulation. These methods enable the optimization of the transmission performance of the satellite-to-ground laser communication link, thus significantly contributing to the realization of high-speed and reliable laser communication between satellite and ground networks.

Abstract:Low earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations using laser inter-satellite links (ISLs) are recognized as a promising technology to provide global broadband network services. In this paper, the queuing delay model of an optical space network built on LEO satellite constellations is established. It is assumed that the optical space network employs wavelength division multiplexing ISLs with wavelength routing technology to communication satellites and makes routing decisions. With consideration of the network task characterizations such as distribution of task arrival time and task holding duration, simulation experiment results are analyzed and the expression of optical space network queuing delay is given. Both theoretical analysis and simulation results show that features of queuing delay vary with distribution characterizations of the network tasks. It is hoped that the study can be helpful to evaluate the design of constellation networking.

Abstract:Microwave-based satellite-ground links are used to transfer time and frequency in various applications such as metrology, navigation, positioning, and very long baseline interferometers. The existing approaches, however, cannot fully satisfy the requirements of these applications. In this study, we investigated the possibility of an optical-based satellite-ground link, where the transferred carriers are pulsed lasers, resulting in a link with a high time resolution and a large ambiguous range. First, we analyzed the parameters of satellites in different orbits and concluded that high-orbit links enable more stable time-frequency comparison or dissemination by taking advantage of the long duration, a large common view range, and the lower relativistic effects. Subsequently, we performed a 16 km free-space transfer experiment to simulate links in the loss, noise, and delay effects. The link exhibits an instability of 4 x 10(-18) at 3,000 s and an approximately 10 fs time deviation with an average loss of 72 dB, corresponding to the loss of a satellite-ground link at geostationary earth orbit (GEO). Based on these results, we expect that the instability of the time-frequency transfer via a GEO link might reach 10(-18) at 10,000 s. Abstract:The development of satellite networks is drawing much more attention in recent years due to the wide coverage ability. Composed of geosynchronous orbit (GEO), medium earth orbit (MEO), and low earth orbit (LEO) satellites, the satellite network is a three-layer heterogenous network of high complexity, for which comprehensive theoretical analysis is still missing. In this paper, we investigate the capacity performance of the three-layer heterogenous satellite network. We first construct the network model and the capacity model of the network with detailed design of the network parameters. Then, taking time structure into account, we propose a time structure based augmenting path searching method, which can significantly reduce the computing complexity. Finally, based on the model and method proposed, we analyze the capacity performance of the three-layer heterogenous satellite network with numerical results.

Abstract:Free space optical communication has merged the aspects of fiber optics and the wireless communication which are the most conquered and controlled telecommunication technologies. Most of the features of free space optics (FSO) are interrelated to fiber optics but the difference between them is transmission medium, which is glass in case of fiber-optics and air/vacuum in case of FSO. In the near future, communication between LEO & GEO satellites with each other which are orbiting the Earth will be done by using inter-satellite optical wireless communication (IsOWC) systems. IsOWC systems is the most significant application of the FSO and it will be installed in the space in the near future because of its low input power, no licensing by ITU, low cost, light weight, small size of the telescopes and very high data rates as compared to the radio frequency (RF) satellite systems. In this research article, IsOWC system is designed between LEO and GEO satellites by using optisystem which is not stated in past examined research works. Inter-satellite link is established between satellites which are separated by the distance of 40,000 Km at the bit rate of 10 Gbps.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a cognitive satellite-terrestrial network where the satellite communication operates in the microwave frequency bands allocated to terrestrial networks in an underlay mode. Taking the statistical delay quality-of-service (QoS) requirements into account, we investigate the effective capacity of the satellite network while satisfying interference-power limitations imposed by terrestrial networks. Specifically, the primary terrestrial transmitters that would result in aggregate interference at the satellite receiver are modeled as points of a Poisson point process (PPP). By characterizing the aggregate interference as a gamma distribution, we obtain a closed-form expression for the effective capacity of the secondary satellite network. Finally, simulation results are provided to not only demonstrate the validity of the theoretical results, but also show the effects of system parameters such as delay exponent of satellite communications, interference-power limitations of terrestrial networks, and intensity of terrestrial transmitters on the performance of the satellite network.

Abstract:The uplink capacity of GEO satellite mobile communication system compatible with TD-SCDMA is presented in this paper. An analysis on the interference and system capacity in the specific system is made according to the multi-beam model based on HFDD. Verified by simulation, the analysis not only provides a theoretical foundation for network planning of satellite system based on TD-SCDMA in terms of capacity, but also provides reference for the study of frequency reuse and multi-beam isolation related to system capacity.

Abstract:The increasing demand for high-speed, large capacity data transmission between the earth and satellites may be solved by optical communications today. Otherwise, the satellite-to-earth communication will be constrained by the transmission bottleneck. Relevant researches have been done and resultfull achievements have been obtained, such as the Optical Communication Demonstration System, Optical Demonstration and High-speed Link Devices, STRV-2 Experiment, Geosynchronous Lightweight Technology Experiment (GeoLITE), and Mars Laser Communication Demonstration System (MLCD) developed by the US, as well as the laser communication experimental devices developed by Japan. Researches have also been conducted in China in the areas of Acquisition, Pointing and Tacking (APT), optical phased array and new types of satellite-to-earth communications. There are many problems that are expected to be solved in the future, such as how to improve APT performance, how to overcome the effect of space atmosphere, how to raise the data rate to Gigabit per second with low bit error rate, and how to link the satellite and earth optical networks.

Abstract:A novel closed-form expression for average capacity is derived for free-space optical (FSO) links over Gamma-Gamma turbulence channels by considering the effect of misalignment (pointing errors). The simulation results show that the average capacity of the FSO links can be analyzed with the effects of atmospheric turbulence condition, beam width, detector size, jitter variable, and transmitted optical power. Meanwhile, the results are further provided to verify the accuracy of our mathematical analysis. This work is useful for the FSO designer.
