Abstract:Software defined networking (SDN) is a style of computer networking that separates the control plane from the data plane,shifting the control plane to a centralized controller in order to achieve network flexibility and openness.The controller placement is a key prerequisite to successful SDN.The current study examines the hierarchically distributed control plane controller placement problem,utilizing a multi-level k-way switch partition algorithm to divide large scale network topology.We also fix the traditional SDN controller placement problem,changing zoning and intra-domain controller placement by reducing the edge-cut in order to lower the number of inter-domain flows.Simulation results show that the multilevel k-way switch partition algorithm can effectively reduce control flow overhead and flow set-up time,compared with the other traditional algorithms.

Abstract:Since a single controller cannot meet the requirements of SDN deployment in WAN, a multi-controller placement scheme is proposed for this problem. Under the condition of given network topology and number of controllers, firstly, the controller's and switch's own performance constraints are considered in this paper, and then the bidirectional matching on controllers and switches are executed. Secondly, the network overhead as a target function is minimized in the paper. Finally, in order to complete the placement of the controller, the paper uses the particle optimization algorithm to optimize the elements in the matching list. The simulation results show that the scheme can obtain a small total controller overhead and optimize the total cost of the switch.

Abstract:The exponential growth in emerging applications in datacenters leads to significant increases in traffic and bandwidth consumption in datacenter networks. Fine-grained optical switching technology can provide low-latency end-to-end connection with flexible granularity in intra-data-center networks. In such a scheme, the centralized network controller will compute an end-to-end path and provide switch state commands for each connection request. However, as network scale and traffic requirements continually increase, the centralized controller will face a significant challenge in low-latency end-to-end connection provisioning under a heavy traffic load. Limited by the controller's computation and processing performance, the continuously arriving connection requests may block the server's message queue and slow down the controller's processing rate. In this paper, we propose a multi-controller control scheme for fine-grained all-optical datacenter networks. We take optical time slice switching as an example of fine-grained all-optical switching to illustrate our detailed control scheme. Partitioning rules for the network and controllers' responsibilities, the routing algorithm, and the signaling process are also discussed. The proposed multi-controller control scheme can greatly reduce each controller's computation and processing burden and improve network performance. Dynamic datacenter network emulations are launched to verify our proposed scheme. The emulation results indicate that the multi-controller scheme can reduce connection setup delays and request and data failure rates, while the single controller fails to handle all the requests.
Towards Controller Placement for Robust Software-Defined Networks

Abstract:The core concept of software-defined network (SDN) is the separation between control plane and date plane. SDN provides a programmatic interface to network control, significantly simplifies network management and improves the efficiency of network utilization. To further improve network performance, scalability and reliability, it is recommended to deploy multiple controllers in SDN. However, network performance would degrade if operators randomly deploy the controllers, especially in the case of failure, e.g., router crashes, fiber cuts, etc. In this paper, we try to optimally place controllers while taking network failures into account. First, we formally define two problems, 1) Controller Placement under Comprehensive Network States (CPCNS) problem; and 2) Controller Placement under Single Link Failure (CPSLF) problem. Secondly, We propose a network states traversal based algorithm, which optimally solve the problem; and further propose another greedy-based algorithm, which can solve the problem in polynomial time. Finally, we evaluate the algorithms using real topologies and empirical data. The results indicate that the new controller placement strategies can significantly improve the performance when link failures happen.

Abstract:Optical multi-domain transport networks are often controlled by a hierarchical distributed architecture of controllers. Optimal placement of these controllers is very important for efficient management and control. Traditional SDN controller placement methods focus mostly on controller placement in datacenter networks. But the problem of virtualized controller placement for multi-domain transport networks needs to be solved in the context of geographically distributed heterogeneous multi-domain networks. In this context, edge datacenters have enabled network operators to place virtualized controller instances closer to users, besides providing more candidate locations for controller placement. In this study, we propose a dynamic controller placement method for optical transport networks that considers the heterogeneity of optical controllers, resource limitations at edge hosting locations, and latency requirements. We also propose a machine-learning framework that helps the controller placement algorithm with proactive prediction (instead of traditional <i>reactive</i> threshold-based approach). Simulation studies, considering practical scenarios and temporal variation of load, show significant cost savings compared to traditional placement approaches.

Abstract:Cloud services are fundamentally supported by Data Center Networks (DCNs). With the fast growth of cloud services, the scale of DCNs increases rapidly, leading to a big concern on system scalability due to multiple constraints. Based on optical switching and transmission, this paper proposes a scalable DCN architecture with distributed placement of optical switches and server racks at different nodes in a given optical network. This solves the scalability issue by relaxing power and cooling constraints, and reducing the number of (electronic) switches using high-capacity optical switches, as well as simplifying internal connections of the DCN using wavelengths in the optical network. Moreover, the distributed optical switches provide service access interfaces to demands in vicinities, and thus reduce the transmission cost of the external traffic. The major concern is the additional delay and cost for remote transmissions of the DCN internal traffic. To this end, we study the component placement problem in DCNs under a given set of external demands and internal traffic patterns. By leveraging among multiple conflicting factors such as scalability and internal overhead of the DCN as well as the transmission cost of external traffic, we propose an ILP (Integer Linear Program) to minimize the overall cost of a DCN while satisfying all service demands in the network. This addresses both scalability and cost minimization issues from a network point of view.

Abstract:In optical data center networks, the utilization of several software-defined network controllers has been implemented to enhance scalability and reliability. However, during dynamic variations in network traffic, static controller deployment often leads to load imbalance among the controllers. Previous studies have proposed dynamic switch migration as a solution to realize controller load balancing. However, the effectiveness of existing switch migration methods remains insufficient. The load balancing performance of controllers demonstrates limited enhancement following migration, and the migration operations themselves result in supplementary costs. As a result, the issue of switch migration efficiency remains unresolved. To tackle controller load balancing, this research introduces the intelligent controller load balancing (ICLB). ICLB incorporates multiple load metrics to evaluate controller load and selects the ideal target controller based on available resources, leading to enhanced load balancing effectiveness. Moreover, it selects switches while the minimizing migration process, effectively reducing supplementary expenses. Additionally, ICLB can simultaneously manage the workload of multiple controllers during a switch migration process, resulting in enhanced migration efficiency. The outcomes of simulations provide evidence that ICLB offers substantial improvements in controller load balancing performance, along with reduced migration expenses compared to existing solutions.

Abstract:For dynamic traffic of switches in the software-defined networking, the existing methods mostly adopt the switch migration to balance the controller with an uneven load. However, these researches have overlooked that the frequent migration of switches will cause instability in the control plane and increase the network delay. To reduce switch migration, this paper proposes a robust controller placement model that considers dynamic traffic while placing the controllers. Firstly, the bounded symmetric interval is used to describe the dynamic traffic in the network, and the magnitude of the traffic change is represented by the variation parameter σ. Secondly, the control parameter Γ is introduced to control the conservativeness of the solution and construct a multi-controller robust placement model. Finally, the model is transformed into a linear programming problem based on the strong duality theory, and we use the tabu search algorithm to implement an efficient solution. The simulation results show that different controller placement strategies can be obtained by changing the control parameter. When the service level is low, the cost increase can greatly improve the service level; however, when the service level exceeds 90%, the 10% increase in placement cost can only improve the service level by 1%.

Abstract:Software-defined networking is a modern and popular network technology that utilizes controllers as network operating systems to manage the network and allow user applications to interact with network hardware. Determining the optimal number of controllers and the optimal place to install them are some of the multi-controller model challenges that are known as the Controller Placement Problem (CPP). CPP is an optimization problem that tries to minimize delay and achieve a balanced network. CPP becomes more important when we intend to increase reliability and reduce energy consumption. This paper proposes an Energy-efficient and Load-balanced optimization Algorithm for Reliable Controller Placement (ELA-RCP) in Software-Defined Networks (SDN). The proposed ELA-RCP is a three-step solution to CPPs. First, it determines the optimal number of controllers using the proposed cellular learning automata, taking into account network traffic status, scale, and budget. Second, an innovative meta-heuristic algorithm is proposed to identify proper controller locations based on factors like path reliability, controller processing capacity, propagation delay, and energy consumption. In the last step, load balancing and the reliability of the controllers are improved using queuing theory and a proposed greedy algorithm. ELA-RCP is evaluated with real-world topologies. The simulation demonstrates up to 25% improvement in energy consumption, up to 108% improvement in the network survivability, and up to 68% improvement in mean average delay rise compared to particle swarm optimization, firefly optimization algorithm, ant lion optimization, and seagull optimization algorithm.

Abstract:Distributed Software Defined Networking federates multiple controllers In a network to solve the problems In single controller networks, e.g., to improve network reliability and reduce the delay between controllers and switches. However, in the current distributed SDN schemes, the mapping between SDN switches and controllers is statically configured, which may result in uneven load distribution among controllers. These schemes cannot fully benefit from the distributed SDN architecture. In order to address this issue, this paper proposes an adaptive elastic distributed SDN architecture. The architecture dynamically selects a minimum. number of active controllers that switches attached to, and changes the mapping between switches and controllers according to the network load. Specially, a switch can migrate from one controller domain to another so that the mapping is adaptive to the network load. We formalize the controller selection problem as an optimization problem, and prove that the problem is NP-Hard. We solve the problem by using greedy algorithms. With the algorithms, controllers In a network are dynamically changed with respect to the network load and the number of active controll0ers is close to the optimal value. We validate the algorithms and evaluate the performance by simulations. In particular, the simulation results show that the number of active controllers is reduced by 60% when the whole network load decreases. © 2015 IEEE.

Abstract:The distributed Software-Defined Networking (SDN) approach has been adopted to address the scalability issue linked to the use of a single SDN controller, particularly in large-scale networks. However, this method gives rise to a new challenge of uneven load balance on the distributed SDN controller. Several studies tried to solve this issue but they have focused only on balancing the load when an overload occurs and have not achieved the load balance continuously. In this paper, we propose the multiple threshold load balance (MTLB) switch migration scheme to achieve continuous load balancing among the controllers. This approach classifies the load into several gradual levels that represents the basis for the switch migration when the load of a controller differs from others, which lead the threshold value to be dynamically adjusted. Moreover, our scheme reduces the overhead of unwanted update operations among the controllers by adopting the controller load status as an indicator for disseminating the load information. We implement our scheme using the Floodlight controller and Mininet emulator. The experimental results show that our scheme has better comprehensive performance than the other schemes in terms of response time, control overhead, and throughput rate.

Abstract:Aiming at the local overload of multi-controller deployment in software-defined networks, a load balancing mechanism of SDN controller based on reinforcement learning is designed. The initial paired migrate-out domain and migrate-in domain are obtained by calculating the load ratio deviation between the controllers, a preliminary migration triplet, contains migration domain mentioned above and a group of switches which are subordinated to the migrate-out domain, makes the migration efficiency reach the local optimum. Under the constraint of the best efficiency of migration in the whole and without migration conflict, selecting multiple sets of triples based on reinforcement learning, as the final migration of this round to attain the global optimal controller load balancing with minimum cost. The experimental results illustrate that the mechanism can make full use of the controllers' resources, quickly balance the load between controllers, reduce unnecessary migration overhead and get a faster response rate of the packet-in request.

Abstract:Software-defined networks (SDNs) can improve network resource utilization and optimize the performance of mobile cloud-edge computing networks (MECCNs) through unified and flexible network management. However, network traffic in MECCNs can change over time and space, which affects the performance of the control plane in an SDN. Further, an MECCN may require the temporary addition of network access points, further reducing the network management capabilities of the control plane. To ensure that the control plane can handle the constant changes in network traffic, adapt to dynamic changes in network access points, and provide continuous and efficient network management functions, this study focuses on the dynamic controller placement problem in SDN-enabled MECCNs. We study the deployment of a two-layer control plane and accordingly construct the corresponding delay, load balancing, and control reliability models. Next, we construct a joint optimization problem considering the developed delay, load balancing, and control reliability, and solve this problem using an algorithm based on the deep deterministic policy gradient algorithm. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms other algorithms on a variable-node network.

Flexible Distributed Control Plane Deployment

Abstract:For large-scale programmable networks, flexible deployment of distributed control planes is essential for service availability and performance. However, existing approaches only focus on placing controllers whereas the consequent control traffic is often ignored. In this paper, we propose a black-box optimization framework offering the additional steps for quanti-fying the effect of the consequent control traffic when deploying a distributed control plane. Evaluating different implementations of the framework over real-world topologies shows that close to optimal solutions can be achieved. Moreover, experiments indicate that running a method for controller placement without considering the control traffic, cause excessive bandwidth usage (worst cases varying between 20.1%-50.1% more) and congestion, compared to our approach.

Abstract:In order to improve the scalability and reliability of Software Defined Networking (SDN), many studies use multiple controllers to constitute logically centralized control plane to provide load balancing and fail over. In this paper, we develop a flexible dormant multi-controller model based on the centralized multi-controller architecture. The dormant multi-controller model allows part of controllers to enter the dormant state under light traffic condition for saving system cost. Meanwhile, through queueing analysis, various performance measures of the system can be obtained. Moreover, we analyze the real traffic of China Education Network and use the results as the parameters of computer simulation and verify the effects of parameters on the system characteristics. Finally, a total expected cost function is established, and genetic algorithm is employed to find the optimal values of various parameters to minimize system cost for the deployment decision making.
