Abstract:Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising technology for the next generation high-speed wireless communication. However, carrier frequency offset (CFO) induced by Doppler frequency drift and mismatch of the transceivers oscillators influences the time synchronization for OFDM systems. In this paper a robust time synchronization scheme compatible to IEEE 802.16a specification is proposed. It uses the symmetrical cross-correlation structure to eliminate the impact of frequency offset totally and to capture the accurate starting position of the FFT windows rapidly. Computer simulations demonstrate that the synchronization scheme is very efficient in combating large CFO.

Abstract:Sampling frequency offset (SFO), which is due to mismatch of sampling clocks between transmitter and receiver oscillators, is a key factor affecting transmission performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal in visible light communication (VLC) systems with bandwidth-limited light emitting diodes (LEDs). To improve the system spectral efficiency for a relatively high capacity, an effective scheme for SFO compensation is required to achieve a high signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR). From the practical system design point of view, a fourth-order piecewise polynomial interpolator using Farrow structure is proposed to digitally compensate SFO for VLC systems. Nonlinearity of LEDs causes extra high frequency components beyond the OFDM signal spectrum, which may aggravate the aliasing effect when digital compensation of SFO is applied. Theoretical study is thus given to the impact of both the LED nonlinearity and SFO- induced inter-carrier interference (ICI) on SINR of the received OFDM signal. Both numerical and experimental results show that the proposed scheme can be applied to effectively compensate a local oscillator frequency offset up to ±1000ppm in an OFDM-based VLC system at a minimum oversampling rate of 1.3 at the receiver.

Abstract:A simple optical OFDM (OOFDM) synchronization technique utilizing subtraction and Gaussian windowing at the symbol rate is proposed and implemented in FPGA-based OOFDM receivers. End-to-end real-time symbol synchronization of 128-QAM-encoded OOFDM signals at raw bit rates of 6.56Gb/s is experimentally demonstrated, for the first time, over directly modulated DFB laser-based 25km SMF intensity modulation and direct detection (IMDD) systems. Experimental investigations show that the proposed synchronisation technique offers a number of salient advantages including low complexity, fast tracking speed, high accuracy and suitability for high-capacity optical transmission systems.

Abstract:Sampling frequency offset (SFO) is an important issue in the orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based visible light communication (VLC) systems with low-cost analog-to-digital or digital-to-analog converters (ADCs/DACs). A digital interpolation or resampling filter can be used to effectively compensate the SFO. In such case, oversampling at the receiver ADC is required to mitigate the aliasing effect due to imperfect DACs and nonlinearity of visible light sources that cause extra frequency components inside/outside the OFDM signal spectrum. The oversampling factor (rate) is mainly determined by the order of the digital interpolation filter and nonlinear VLC links. The design of the OFDM-VLC receiver incorporating the digital interpolation filter is vital as it affects not only the transmission performance but also the complexity of digital signal processing (DSP). To evaluate the feasibility of the digital interpolation-based SFO compensation schemes for cost-sensitive VLC applications, in this paper, a real-time OFDM-VLC receiver incorporating the 2nd/3rd/4th order interpolation filters is experimentally demonstrated. An OFDM frame structure is designed for the synchronization including SFO estimation and compensation, in which the precision and latency of DSP are considered. On the basis of the real-time OFDM-VLC receiver, the comparison in the VLC transmission performance and DSP complexity between different interpolation-based SFO compensation schemes is discussed.

Abstract:As an emerging wireless communication technology,visible light communication (VLC)is one of the effective solutions for the shortage of wireless spectrum resource.In this work,a lowcomplexity design scheme of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system is proposed based on the mask invariable characteristics of the received signal-to-noise rate of VLC in the electrical domain.The scheme is verified by the experiments.The experimental results show that,compared with the adaptive equal bits transmission scheme,the proposed adaptive OFDM system makes full use of the bandwidth resources of wireless optical channel,and it shows improvements in transmission rate and BER performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a visible light communication (VLC) system using continuous phase modulation (CPM) and prove its advantage in energy efficiency over orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme. Furthermore, to ensure the feasibility of broadband communications in indoor optical multipath environments, we propose algorithms including linear decomposition-based channel compensation to combat the inter-symbol-interference (ISI) and correlation matrix-based highly power-efficient CPM signal reconstruction to recover the original CPM signal without multipath effects. Additionally, in the signal reconstruction algorithm, a condition-enhanced method is proposed to solve the condition number problem of correlation matrix. The algorithms are verified and evaluated in terms of the normalized mean squared error (NMSE) simulation and bit error rate (BER) experiments. The power efficiency, the fading compensation character promote the proposed CPM transceiver to be a practical VLC candidate.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing/offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM/OQAM) has the advantage of high spectral efficiency due to non-requirement of cyclic prefix (CP) and guard band. However, the high direct current (DC) used in OFDM/OQAM is power inefficient for visible light communication (VLC). In this letter, an enhanced OFDM/OQAM (EO-OFDM/OQAM) scheme is proposed for VLC, which is inspired by the idea of the pulse-amplitude-modulation based hybrid optical OFDM (PHO-OFDM) scheme. In this system, the half of subcarriers of the normal branch carry useful data while the remaining subcarriers are selected to carry negative clipping noise instead of useful data for improving the power efficiency, and a flexible power allocation method is introduced. The simulation results show that compared with the PHO-OFDM, the proposed scheme has a better bit error rate (BER) performance under the same average bit rate without additional operations of interference regeneration and cancellation.

Abstract:In this paper, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with differential index modulation (OFDM-DIM) is proposed for visible light communication. Compared with traditional OFDM with index modulation (OFDM-IM), the proposed scheme decreases the average number of used subcarriers when transmits the same amount of information bits, therefore higher spectral efficiency can be achieved. The simulation results present that OFDM-DIM can provide higher data transmission rate and lower bit error rate (BER) over additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) optical channel. Meanwhile, simulations over reference channels of short range optical wireless communication are implemented, where OFDM-DIM performances better than OFDM-IM when line-of-sight (LOS) components are dominant.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) technology using light emitting diodes (LEDs) has been gaining increasing attention in recent years as it is appealing for a wide range of applications such as indoor positioning. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been applied to indoor wireless optical communications in order to mitigate the effect of multipath distortion of the optical channel as well as increasing data rate. In this paper, we investigate the indoor positioning accuracy of optical based OFDM techniques used in VLC systems. A positioning algorithm based on power attenuation is used to estimate the receiver coordinates. We further calculate the positioning errors in all the locations of a room and compare them with those of single carrier modulation scheme, i.e., on-off keying (OOK) modulation. We demonstrate that OFDM positioning system outperforms its conventional counterpart.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a novel quasi-balanced detection (QBD) technique in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) visible light communication (VLC) system. By employing opposite signals to odd and even consecutive symbols, the nonlinearity distortion, and direct current can be eliminated efficiently. Additionally, the sensitivity of receiver can also be improved by 3dB, thus a longer transmission distance and high-order modulation formats can be received. We achieved physical data rate of 2.1-Gb/s enabled by wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM), pre- and post-equalization, and the resulting bit error ratios (BERs) were below the FEC limit of 3.8x10(-3). The distance was above 2.5 meters that was long enough for indoor communication. Compared with conventional direct-detection optical (DDO-OFDM) and asymmetrically-clipped optical (ACO-OFDM), the BER can be enhanced by 22.2dB and 20.8dB, respectively, which shows great potential in short range and low cost access network.

Abstract:Visible-light communication (VLC) systems leverage solid-state illumination devices to create high-speed communication links. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been considered for these intensity-modulated/direct-detection (IM/DD) optical channels, however, it suffers from high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). Moreover, the implementation of linear, power-efficient, high-current, wideband drivers is challenging. In this paper, the concept of spatial summing is developed where wideband, high PAPR OFDM signals are partitioned into many low-PAPR narrowband signals that are transmitted from multiple LEDs. The signals from different LEDs are allowed to sum in space before being detected by a conventional OFDM receiver. Spatial optical-OFDM (SO-OFDM) is proposed in which filtered subsets of carriers are emitted by each LED. In addition, low-PAPR optical single-carrier FDMA (OSC-FDMA) is developed where different collections of LEDs act as virtual users in a multiple-access scheme. The different variations of SO-OFDM and OSC-FDMA are compared to conventional DC-biased optical (DCO) OFDM and are shown to achieve lower PAPR and more robustness to LED nonlinearities leading to error rate performance gains at high signal-to-noise ratios.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been widely used in visible light communication systems to achieve high-rate data transmission. Due to the nonlinear transfer characteristics of light emitting diodes (LEDs) and owing the high peak-to-average-power ratio of OFDM signals, the transmitted signal has to be scaled and biased before modulating the LEDs. In this contribution, an adaptive scaling and biasing scheme is proposed for OFDM-based visible light communication systems, which fully exploits the dynamic range of the LEDs and improves the achievable system performance. Specifically, the proposed scheme calculates near-optimal scaling and biasing factors for each specific OFDM symbol according to the distribution of the signals, which strikes an attractive trade-off between the effective signal power and the clipping-distortion power. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly improves the performance without changing the LED's emitted power, while maintaining the same receiver structure.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) using high power light emitting diodes (LEDs) for high speed communication becomes a new area which draws increasing attention. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-speed VLC system based on Discrete Fourier Transform Spread Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) for the first time. We change the value of different factors and compare the performance of the system in order to find the effect of different factors. The experimental results show that the bit error rate (BER) for an overall 1.2Gb/s 64QAM and 32QAM signal over 40 cm transmission can be under the 7% forward error correction (FEC) limit of 3.8×10 -3 . Meanwhile, we clearly demonstrate the benefit and feasibility of DFT-S OFDM modulation format for the high speed VLC system.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) has received more and more attention in recent years. In this paper, we propose a novel configuration of unidirectional subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) -wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) -VLC system adopting quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. Based on this configuration, we successfully demonstrate a 3x1 multiple-input single-output (MISO) OFDM-VLC transmission experiment using three blue phosphor LEDs. The transmission distance can be as long as 140cm. We also demonstrate an 800-Mb/s MISO SCM-WDM VLC transmission experiment based on RGB-LED with 66-cm transmission distance. In the two experiments, pre-equalization and post-equalization both are implemented to compensate for the poor frequency response of LEDs. And the properties of EVM and BER in all channels are measured and analysed.

Abstract:Wireless visible light communication system uses LED illumination for data transmission. It is important for a performance index to evaluate a variation of communication quality with the number of users. Although CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) is a representative of a conventional multiple access in a wireless communication, the maximum number of users is limited due to the length of the spread code, ISI (Inter-Symbol Interference) and MAI (Multiple Access Interference). To solve these problems, we propose the OFDM-IDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing - Interleave Division Multiple Access), which has robustness for the above-mentioned problems. Moreover, we can improve the robustness by using multi carrier modulation. Therefore we apply the OFDM-IDMA system to visible light communication system. The simulation result shows that BER performance of an optical OFDM-IDMA with multiuser situation is the approximately same as that of single user.

Abstract:In indoor visible light communication (VLC) and visible light positioning (VLP) systems, the performance of conventional orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) schemes is often compromised due to the nonlinear characteristics and limited modulation bandwidth of light-emitting diodes, the multipath effect in enclosed indoor environments, and the relative positions of transmitters and receivers. This paper proposes an OFDM scheme based on the fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) to address these issues, demonstrating promising results when applied to indoor VLC and VLP systems. The FRFT, a generalization of the conventional Fourier transform (FT) in the fractional domain, captures information in both the time and frequency domains, offering greater flexibility than the FT. In this paper, we first introduce the computation method of the reality-preserving FRFT for an intensity modulation/direct detection VLC system and integrate it with OFDM to optimize system performance. By adopting FRFT-OFDM under the optimal fractional order, we enhance both the bit error ratio (BER) performance and positioning accuracy. Simulation results reveal that the FRFT-OFDM scheme with an optimized fractional order significantly improves the BER and positioning accuracy compared to the FT-OFDM scheme across most receiver positions within the indoor observation plane. For communication, the FRFT-OFDM scheme achieves over 6 dB Eb/N0 gain compared to the FT-OFDM scheme at a BER of 3×10−4 when the receiver is positioned at most locations in the room. For positioning, the FRFT-OFDM scheme enhances positioning accuracy by more than 1 cm relative to the FT-OFDM scheme at most locations in the room. Notably, both systems maintain the same computational complexity and spectral efficiency.
