Abstract:Ultrafast phenomena exist widely in modern scientific research. The time scale of ultrafast phenomena is mostly in the order of picosecond, femtosecond, or even attosecond. Nowadays, it is still a major challenge to study these nonrepetitive transient processes. Here, a temporal-frequency measurement based on a dispersion-managed technique has been proposed for an MoTe2-based ultrafast laser. The temporal-frequency measurement comprises a laser diode, an optical switch, a section of tunable dispersion compensation fiber, and a three-port beam splitter. Resolution of the proposed measurement can be tuned in a wide range; further, the upper and lower resolution limits are numerically simulated. The proposed measurement is expected to be applied in ultrafast pulse detection due to its application in real-time measurement of ultrafast nonrepetitive signals.

Abstract:Ultrashort laser pulse has been widely used in various applications. Its parameters, such as the pulse duration and the spectral bandwidth, should be controlled accurately in order to achieve high spatial and temporal resolution, as well as high local field intensity. In this paper, we have proposed a method to trace the propagation of ultrashort pulses through optical systems, especially the complex optics. The approach, in which both the material's dispersion and optical aberrations are taken into consideration, is developed based on the geometrical ray-tracing combined with wave theories. This method is validated by simulating the propagation of a femtosecond pulse through a specific practical imaging system. As the numerical result shows that the spatial-temporal performances of pulses are influenced greatly by optical elements, the calibration arrangement is employed to compensate for those undesired distortions. The negative dispersion of the optical grisms (the combination of gratings and prisms) is utilized in the calibration process to offset the positive dispersion introduced by lenses. The final result shows effectiveness of the correction.

Abstract:We built a dispersive white-light spectral interferometer for precisely measuring the dispersion properties of a multilayer thin-film structure. A novel algorithm with improved robustness to measurement errors is presented by combining a windowed Fourier transformation with wavelet-based differentiation. Compared with previously published algorithms, this method shows substantial resistance to measurement errors. The group delay dispersion properties of bulk materials and a homemade chirped mirror are measured by our apparatus, and the measurement result manifests considerable accuracy and robustness. The technique shows reasonable potential for the characterization of ultrabroadband chirped mirrors.

Abstract:We proposed a protocol of measuring the duration of ultra-short single-photon pulse with two-photon interference. The pulse duration can be obtained from the width of the visibility of two-photon Hong-Ou-Mandel interference or the indistinguishability of the two photons. Moreover, the shape of a single-photon pulse can be measured with ultra-short single-photon pulses through the two-photon interference.

Abstract:With propagating through a dispersive medium, the temporal–spectral profile of optical pulses should be inevitably modified. Although such dispersion effect has been well studied in classical optics, its effect on a single-photon wave-packet has not yet been entirely revealed. In this paper, we investigate the effect of dispersion on indistinguishability between single-photon wave-packets through the Hong–Ou–Mandel (HOM) interference. By dispersively manipulating two weak coherent single-photon wave-packets which are prepared by attenuating mode-locked laser pulses before interfering with each other, we observe that the difference of the second-order dispersion between two optical paths of the HOM interferometer can be mapped to the interference curve, indicating that (i) with the same amount of dispersion effect in both paths, the HOM interference curve must be only determined by the intrinsic indistinguishability between the wave-packets, i.e., dispersion cancellation due to the indistinguishability between Feynman paths; and (ii) unbalanced dispersion effect in two paths cannot be canceled and will broaden the interference curve thus providing a way to measure the second-order dispersion coefficient. Our results suggest a more comprehensive understanding of the single-photon wave-packet and pave ways to explore further applications of the HOM interference.

Abstract:We numerically study the relativistic ponderomotive scattering of an ultrafast electron beam with a focused high-intensity laser pulse using a three-dimensional test-particle code. The temporal evolution of the spatial distribution and the energy spectrum of the scattered electron beam are investigated. The method using the ponderomotive scattering effect to measure the pulse duration of an ultrashort electron beam is discussed in detail. Taking into account the group velocity mismatch, the interaction geometry, and electron energy spectrum modified by the ponderomotive forces, the pulse duration of ultrashort electron beams can be retrieved by the ponderomotive scattering cross-correlation method.

Abstract:In laser-matter interaction, most previous studies have focused on the change of the electron momentum induced by the external fields. Here, we theoretically investigate the electron displacement induced by an ultrashort pulse, whose precise waveform is hard to determine experimentally. We propose and numerically demonstrate a scheme to accurately measure the electron displacement using a ruler formed by the interfering spirals in the photoelectron momentum distribution generated by two oppositely circularly polarized pulses. The scheme is robust against the focusing volume effects and the jitter of the carrier envelope phase of the two circular pulses. The ability to measure the electron displacement by an arbitrary pulse may pave the way to quantitative control of the charge migration in matter on the scale of Ångström.

Abstract:Pulse-width of ultrashort laser is a very important parameter for the wide applications of ultrashort pulse. Various methods have been proposed to measure pulse-width, such as second harmonic generation method, third harmonic generation method and frequency resolved optical gating method. Despite of the benefits they hold, they share a vital drawback: they all employ nonlinear effects of ultrashort pulse, which means that the input power must be large enough to generate nonlinear effect, and the central wavelength of the pulse must correspond to the sensitivity range of nonlinear crystal. In this paper we present a new method of measuring pulse-width based on the Talbot effect of ultrashort laser pulse. The ultrashort pulse can be treated as a series of waves of different wavelengths, so at certain Talbot distances, the diffraction of the ultrashort laser pulse reshapes the energy distribution. Thus it gives us the possibility to determine the pulse-width by means of the diffraction. Taking advantages of Talbot effect, the method has the features of large measuring wavelength range, accurate measurement and simple structure. As the basis of the method is diffraction rather than nonlinear effect, all the problems related to nonlinear effect are avoided, such as high incident power and wavelength requirement. Both single and multiple shot pulse are suitable for this method. Numerical analysis has shown that pulse-width from I to 100fs can be measured with error of less than I fs, at wavelength of 800nm. As there is just one Talbot grating between the light source and the detector, we can make the conclusion that this very simple method of pulse-width measuring should be highly interesting for practical application.

Abstract:A novel photonic approach to realize the instantaneous microwave frequency measurement with digital output is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. Based on the power fading function of a double-sideband modulated microwave signal transmitting in a dispersive fiber channel, the microwave frequency to digital code mapping can be realized in a multi-channel system where each channel is configured with a predetermined amount of dispersion. The coding process involved here is similar to that of the photonic analog-to-digital conversion. The principle of the system is discussed in detail. An experiment is carried out, in which the frequency identification with 4-bit quantization levels in 17.5GHz measurement range is demonstrated. The measurement range and the resolution are discussed theoretically and numerically.

Abstract:This Letter demonstrates a novel, to the best of our knowledge, method to measure the fluence distribution of an intense short laser pulse based on the radiochromic effect. We discovered that an intense short laser pulse can induce the color reaction with a radiochromic film (RCF). Further, the net optical density of an irradiated RCF is proportional to the fluence of the incident laser pulse in a large range (2-120 mJ/cm(2)). This method supports a large detection area up to near square-meter scale by splicing multi-pieces of RCFs (8 x 10 inch(2) each). The spatial resolution reaches as high as 60 lines/mm. It offers a thin-film (similar to 100 mu m thick), flexible, vacuum-compatible solution to intense short laser measurements, especially to laser facilities above petawatt, with beam sizes up to near square-meter scale, e.g., extreme light infrastructure. Abstract:Previous pulse-width measurement methods for ultrashort laser pulses have broadly employed nonlinear effects; thus any of these previous methods may experience problems relating to nonlinear effects. Here we present a new pulse-width measuring method based on the linear selfdiffraction effect. Because the Talbot effect of a grating with ultrashort laser pulse illumination is different from that with continuous laser illumination, we are able to use this difference to obtain information about the pulse width. Three new techniques - the intensity integral technique, the intensity comparing ratio technique, and the two-dimensional structure technique - are introduced to make this method applicable. The method benefits from the simple structure of the Talbot effect and offers the possibility to extend the measurement of infrared and x-ray waves, for which currently used nonlinear methods do not work.
Flexible experimental platform for dispersion-free temporal characterization of ultrashort pulses

Abstract:The precise temporal characterization of laser pulses is crucial for ultrashort applications in biology, chemistry, and physics. Especially in femto- and attosecond science, diverse laser pulse sources in different spectral regimes from the visible to the short-wavelength infrared as well as pulse durations ranging from picoseconds to few femtoseconds are employed. In this article, we present a versatile temporal-characterization apparatus that can access these different temporal and spectral regions in a dispersion-free manner and without phase-matching constraints. The design combines transient-grating and surface third-harmonic-generation frequency-resolved optical gating in one device with optimized alignment capabilities based on a noncollinear geometry.

Abstract:A novel technique for instantaneous microwave frequency measurement using an optical phase modulator is proposed and demonstrated. In the proposed system, a microwave signal with its frequency to be measured is modulated on two optical wavelengths at the phase modulator, with the phase-modulated optical signals sent to a dispersive element, and detected at two photo-detectors. Due to the chromatic dispersion of the dispersive element, the two microwave signals will experience different power fading, leading to different power versus frequency functions. A fixed relationship between the microwave frequency and the microwave powers is established. By measuring the microwave powers, the microwave frequency is estimated. Compared with the techniques using an intensity modulator, the proposed approach is simpler with less loss. Since no bias is needed the system has a better stability, which is highly expected for defense applications. Experimental verification is presented.

Abstract:A method to accurately measure the linewidth of short laser pulses at a low repetition rate is demonstrated. Based on the principle of parallel plate equal inclination interference, the linewidth of a short-pulse laser with a low repetition rate is measured by using a Fabry-Pérot (F-P) etalon combined with a CMOS beam profiler. The center of the recorded interference pattern is precisely identified using Hough transformation, and a pixel rotation algorithm is applied to maximise the data collected, transforming two-dimensional image information into one-dimensional spectral information. This algorithm significantly increases the number of data points, improves the spectral resolution, and reduces the error caused by the size of the CMOS pixel size to less than 1 MHz. The influence of the transmission spectrum width (TSW) of the F-P etalon on the measurement results is analyzed, and we demonstrate a reduction in the error introduced by the TSW of the F-P etalon is through deconvolution. This further improves the measurement quality and provides a means by which etalons with a wide TSW can be applied to the measurement of the linewidth of lasers with low pulse energy.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally investigate an all-optical temporal measurement of low-power-density optical pulse shape based on the four-wave-mixing process. It is found that two parameters of the pulse width ratio and frequency difference of the two optical sources are crucial to the measurement accuracy. The qualitative analysis of the impact of the two parameters on the measurement accuracy is employed by simulation. The normalized error denoting the measurement accuracy becomes worse when the pulse width ratio becomes larger, whereas it keeps relatively stable when various overlapping-free frequency differences are applied. In the experiment, temporal measurement of an actively mode-locked laser with ~10-picosecond duration at a repetition frequency of 20.095 GHz is demonstrated, verifying the simulation analysis.

Abstract:We investigate the phase modulation to intensity modulation conversion in dispersive fibers for measuring frequency responses of electro-optic phase modulators, and demonstrate two typical measurements with cascade path and fold-back path. The measured results achieve an uncertainty of less than 2.8% within 20 GHz. Our measurements show stable and repeatable results because the optical carrier and its phase-modulated sidebands are affected by the same fiber impairments. The proposed method requires only dispersive fibers and works without any small-signal assumption, which is applicable for swept frequency measurement at different driving levels and operating wavelengths.

Abstract:We study dispersion mismatches and compensation in high-resolution frequency scanning interference measurements. Compared to semiconductor lasers, external cavity lasers can, in theory, provide wideband frequency modulation and high-resolution measurements. However, experiments indicate that the dispersion mismatch cannot be ignored in measurement systems containing wideband tuning lasers. Fibre auxiliary interferometer external clock sampling results indicate that the beat frequency of measurement signals exhibits linear chirp. In turn, the frequency spectrum of the measurement signal broadens, thus lowering the measurement resolution and limiting the measurement distance. We present a dispersion mismatch model and analyse the associated measurement effects. We also propose a dispersion compensation method based on a focused definition evaluation function. By studying the relationship between the compensation coefficient and evaluation function, the optimal compensation coefficient can be determined quickly and accurately. Our experiments demonstrate that within a tuning bandwidth of 40nm, the peak full width at half maximum (FWHM) after dispersion compensation is 32.2µm at a distance of 3.8931671m, which is close to the theoretical resolution. Our method provides a technical approach to realizing large, high-resolution distance measurements for broadband laser frequency scanning interferometers.
