Abstract:In order to realize the energy efficient on the traffic and illuminating lights in city, the Intelligent Traffic and Illuminating Control System is proposed in this paper. The working criteria of real-time monitoring and intelligently control are designed. The key technologies including Internet of Things with power line communication by LonWorks technology and the piezoelectric sensor on site detecting are utilized in the research. The traffic density is detected by piezoelectric sensor and is "told" to LonWorks network to adjust the traffic red lamp lighting time and the illuminating time. The working flow of the Intelligent Traffic and Illuminating Control System has been verified to ensure the sufficient capability by Cp 1.72 and Cpk 1.60 within Statistical Process Control. The Energy efficient is achieved by 35.71% electrical energy reduction and 66.67% fuel consumption reduction on the energy saving and the carbon oxide emission reduction, which demonstrates that the Intelligent Control System achieves effective and valuable real-time monitoring and intelligently control with superiority of the energy efficient compared to the previous reports.

Abstract:Nowadays in intelligent transportation systems (ITS), information gathering depends heavily on visual information. Image processing technologies (IPT) play a key role. After a brief introduction of ITS, IPT is illustrated from three aspects: image sensor, image processing methods and image processing system. Among many applications for image processing in ITS, the paper presents a roadside example, licence plate recognition (LPR). Attention is centered around two aspects of LPR: plate character isolation and plate character recognition. Lastly, the paper indicates the trends of image-processing technologies in ITS.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed numerous technical breakthroughs in electronics, computing, sensing, robotics, control, signal processing, and communications. These have significantly advanced the state of applications of intelligent transportation systems. More recently, as one leading effort toward the cyber-physical-social system, the concept of intelligent transportation spaces was proposed to further improve the vehicles, traffic, and transportation safety, efficiency and sustainability. ITSp integrate not only various ITS modules, but also pedestrians, vehicles, roadside infrastructures, traffic management centers, sensors, and satellites. With distributed and pervasive intelligence, ITSp clearly impose some stringent requirements on the information exchange among all entities within the ITSp, in terms of the information availability, reliability, fidelity, and timeliness. These requirements, together with the high mobility of vehicles and the highly variable network topology, make the communications and networking for ITSp very challenging. This article will introduce the concept of ITSp and analyze possible communication technology candidates for ITSp. Further discussions will also be provided at the end of this article.

Abstract:Over the past decades, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) have developed and deployed in order to improve transportation safety and mobility, reduces environmental impact, promotes sustainable transportation development and enhances productivity. ITS combines high technology and improvements in information systems, communication, sensors, controllers and advanced mathematical methods with the conventional world of transportation infrastructure. As an interdisciplinary research field, it is difficult to have a clear picture about the whole system for a novice researcher. This paper 1) proposes an ITS architecture, which is based on the requirement and technology at the present stage; 2) sort out the bottleneck issue that lie behind intelligent transportation research; 3) explores the future prospect of the ITS and research focus as new technologies become available.

Abstract:This paper proposes architecture based on wireless sensor network (WSN) technology for intelligent transportation system (ITS) of a transportation network. With the help of WSN technology, the traffic info of the network can be accurately measured in real time. Based on this architecture, an optimization algorithm is proposed to minimize the average travel time for the vehicles in the network. Compared to randomly-chosen algorithm, simulation results show that the average speed of the road network is significantly improved by our algorithm, and thus improve the efficiency of the road network. Some extended applications of the proposed WSN system are discussed as well.

Abstract:Traffic has been on the rise since the past decade that pose threats to driving safety and traffic efficiency. Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) evolved as an alternative solution to ensure traffic efficiency, safety and provides comfort to the commuters on roads. In traditional transportation systems, there exist problems related to safety, traffic management, congestion, routing, road infrastructure management, emergency response, communication, and security which can be solved by ITS. From the existing literature, it is evident that several classes of applications pertaining to safety, surveillance, traffic management, weather/pollution monitoring, disaster management in ITS will create an incredible experience to the commuters and the drivers. ITS engulfs applications pertaining to monitor road surfaces incisively and to recognize risks to alleviate unsafe environments and perilous accidents by means of wireless communications. This provides a motivation in this paper to review distinct types of various research works pertaining to applications of Intelligent Transportation Systems which address the problem of traffic congestion, safety and efficiency in modern ITS. Various applications, communication techniques and security are summarized, analyzed and compared with the existing works using various performance metrics. Moreover, an in-depth survey is carried out to provide insights to bridge the gaps and directions for future researchers. Further, in this paper, the case studies related to ITS have been discussed to identify how the paradigm shift will take us to the design of the future transportation systems.

Abstract:With rapid urbanization, environmental pressure on urban resources and ecological degradation, the government’s public management and public demand generated the “Smart City” concept. The Smart City: to log into the “intelligent transport cloud” platform with a mobile phone before going out, query bus arrival information, taxi location information, the location of parking and real-time traffic information and other comprehensive traffic information, to say goodbye to “traffic jam city” [1]. facilitated by intelligent transportation and satellite navigation systems integrated into the communication network, information communicated and exchanged among satellites, the ground receiving station, the terminal equipment and smart devices in people’s hands. Smart city’s application prospects bring opportunities for Beidou satellite navigation system which was independently developed by China. The Chief Engineer of the North Satellite Navigation System, researcher Sun Jiadong, is full of hope for the compass: “The Beidou Navigation Satellite System will not only play a role in the sky, but on the ground it will also apply more applications to benefit people.” Transportation security, traffic congestion and the reduction of environmental pollution will be greatly aided by Intelligent Transportation Technology (ITS). Intelligent Transportation Technology (ITS) in the Smart City optimizes the traffic infrastructure.

Abstract:As one of the key technologies of the intelligent transportation system (ITS), vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications have received increasing attention. Because of the broad and unlicensed spectrum, free space optical (FSO) communications have become a potential technology for V2X communications. In this article, the implementation of FSO communications is introduced first. Afterward, for the three advantages of FSO communications in ITS, the concrete principle and implementation approaches are illustrated in detail. First, based on the adaptive illumination schemes, the communication range is expanded without visual interference caused by illumination. Second, with the help of mode division multiplexing (MDM) and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), the communication rate is further increased. Third, integrating sensing and communication enables vehicles to effectively obtain information and improve traffic efficiency and safety. In addition, applications of FSO communications in various communication scenarios in ITS are described. To satisfy the complex requirements of communication, illumination, and sensing in traffic scenarios, a deep learning-enabled heterogeneous system of FSO and radio frequency is proposed. Furthermore, future applications and open issues are provided for further investigation.

Abstract:For the last two decades, intelligent transportation systems (ITS) have emerged as an efficient way of improving the performance of transportation systems, enhancing travel security, and providing more choices to travelers. A significant change in ITS in recent years is that much more data are collected from a variety of sources and can be processed into various forms for different stakeholders. The availability of a large amount of data can potentially lead to a revolution in ITS development, changing an ITS from a conventional technology-driven system into a more powerful multifunctional data-driven intelligent transportation system (D2ITS) : a system that is vision, multisource, and learning algorithm driven to optimize its performance. Furthermore, D2ITS is trending to become a privacy-aware people-centric more intelligent system. In this paper, we provide a survey on the development of D2ITS, discussing the functionality of its key components and some deployment issues associated with D2ITS Future research directions for the development of D2ITS is also presented.

Abstract:Effective information transmission between vehicles has become one of the solutions to improve road safety. Based on the huge advantages of optical wireless data transmission technology, this article summarizes the research status of unmanned vehicles in optical wireless communication (OWC). The article not only studies the actual progress of building optical links through an unmanned vehicle, connecting air communication, ground communication, underwater communication into a unified wireless network, and realizing the fast, stable, large-capacity data transmission system. The technical challenges of unmanned vehicle OWC are also discussed and its future development has prospected.

Abstract:The rapid development of the Chinese economy over the past 30 years has increased demand for passenger and freight transport considerably. Although restrictions on economic development have been alleviated by a major programme of road construction, China has begun to seek more sustainable ways of supporting transport development. Intelligent transport systems (ITS) have been introduced and a series of research has been conducted to take advantage of ITS applications in traffic management and control with significant social, economic and environmental benefits. This paper reviews the current use of ITS in China and presents policies, technologies, typical applications and recent activities in ITS development. The main achievements that reflect the current level of China's ITS development are described, in particular the ITS showcase programme and preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games. Finally, the paper discusses China's future ITS plans.

Abstract:To solve the serious problem of hard deployment and high power waste in existing roadside parking system of intelligent transportation system (ITS), a smart roadside parking management system based on sensor networks is presented in this paper. Every node in sensor networks is small and low-power and it can identify parking space automatically by sensing the disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field. To further reduce power waste, nodes can sleep periodically. The node can be waked up by internal microcontroller to collect parking lot information and communicates with other sensor nodes. The system consists of the infrastructure of intelligent transportation system and experiment data shows that it can deal with the existing problems efficiently.

Abstract:The widespread use of mobile devices and sensors has motivated data-driven applications that can leverage the power of big data to benefit many aspects of our daily life, such as health, transportation, economy, and environment. Under the context of smart city, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), as a main building block of modern cities, and edge computing (EC), as an emerging computing service that targets addressing the limitations of cloud computing, have attracted increasing attention in the research community in recent years. It is well believed that the application of EC in ITS will have considerable benefits to transportation systems regarding efficiency, safety, and sustainability. Despite the growing trend in ITS and EC research, a big gap in the existing literature is identified: the intersection between these two promising directions has been far from well explored. In this paper, we focus on a critical part of ITS, i.e., sensing, and conducting a review on the recent advances in ITS sensing and EC applications in this field. The key challenges in ITS sensing and future directions with the integration of edge computing are discussed.
