Abstract:In this article, we proposed a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HCPCF) ring resonator based on a spatial coupling method, and the component is only 22 × 30 × 6 mm 3 . When using a 7-core photonic crystal fiber with a mode field diameter of 10um, a ring resonator with the measured finesse of 18 can be built, indicating that the coupling loss is as low as 0.41 dB. Compact and low-loss closed resonator is accomplished using a highly integrated free space silicon optical bench manufactured by deep silicon etching and tiny optical lens package technology, which promotes the practicality of the HCPCF gyro. In addition, two important factors affecting the spatial optical coupling efficiency, the lens type and the fiber mode field size, are investigated in this article. The obtained results are instructive for all spatial optical coupling systems.

Abstract:This paper proposes a high strength and low loss splicing method suitable for coupling between hollow-core photonic crystal fiber and single mode fiber, based on filament fusion technology. The essence of this method is keeping the temperature of the single mode fiber above the melting temperature, and that of the hollow-core photonic crystal fiber at around the softening point temperature by modifying several splice parameters, which can be pre-evaluated by numerical simulation. Experimental results have verified the accuracy of the numerical model, and ideal splicing results can be made under proper splice parameters. In this paper, repeatable splicing between hollow-core photonic crystal fiber and single mode fiber with a loss of less than 2.3 dB, and a strength higher than 38 Kpsi is demonstrated.

Abstract:We propose mode couplers and converters based on dual-core hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBGF) structures, which might be potential solutions for integrated all-fiber multiplexers or demultiplexers of a mode-division multiplexed (MDM) transmission system using HC-PBGFs. Coupling properties of LP01 and LP11 mode in the mode coupler are investigated and applied to mode separators and polarization separators. Mode transition from LP01 to LP11 and LP21 mode are demonstrated in the mode converter whose smaller core is expected as input end and matched with single-mode fiber. The coupling between fundamental mode and high-order modes is accomplished through the resonant effect, which is fulfilled by modifying the structure parameter of the smaller core. Such mode converters based on dual-core HC-PBGF could be a promising substitute for the free-space coupling device, which is costly and not suitable for integration design in MDM systems and other hollow-core fiber experiments and applications.

Abstract:Hollow fiber has become a research hotspot in the field of special fibers for its excellent characteristics, such as low loss, low delay, low dispersion, and low nonlinear coefficient. Due to the lack of fiber coupler matching hollow core fiber, the application development of hollow core fiber in the all-fiber integrated system is greatly hindered. Dual-core fiber is widely used in the development of fiber couplers because it can choose optical power, wavelength, and polarization state by the coupling between the two cores. For the urgent need for hollow core fiber coupler, the design and research of wideband fiber coupler based on dual-hollow core fiber are carried out in this paper. Based on the coupled mode theory, the theoretical correlation between the structural parameters and the coupling length in the dual-hollow core anti-resonant fiber was analyzed by using the COMSOL simulation software system. On this basis, a 50:50 wideband fiber coupler was designed by adjusting the structural parameters to reduce the coupling length and introducing the sleeve into the cladding pipe to reduce the loss. The bandwidth of the coupler is up to 150 nm and the transmission loss is on the order of 10 −2 dB/m.

Abstract:We report here the low-loss double-end coupling of an anti-resonant hollow-core fiber (AR-HCF) with a solid-core single-mode fiber by the fiber tapering technique for the first time. The double-end coupling model is established by the beam propagation method, and the various influences, such as those of insertion depth, tapered waist offset, tapered waist bending, etc, on the coupling efficiency are simulated in detail. Results show that the coupling efficiency can be optimized by choosing proper waist diameters of the tapered solid-core fibers at both ends; meanwhile, the output taped fiber must be inserted into the proper depth. The calculated maximum coupling efficiency is 70.8% for AR-HCF of the core diameter 46 μ m at the 1.5 μ m band, and the measured value is ~52.3%, which is hoped to be further increased by improving the performance of the tapered fibers and the coupling system. This work opens new opportunities for all-fiber structured gas lasers, which is very significant for its future applications.

Abstract:An efficient method for fabricating multi-core fiber couplers based on the thermal diffusion technique is proposed to realize the connection of single-mode fibers to multi-core fibers without a central core. The fabrication efficiency of the multi-core fiber coupler is improved by fiber-loaded hydrogen. The simulation results show that the single-mode fiber and the multi-core fiber can be coupled stably and efficiently by using the designed double-clad fiber to connect the single-mode fiber and the multi-core fiber. Double-clad fiber and multi-core fiber were loaded with hydrogen to enhance the dopant diffusion rate. Three-dimensional refractive index measurements of the multi-core fiber coupler show that the dopant diffusion rate and the diffusion zone length of the hydrogen-loaded fiber are significantly increased compared to the original fiber. These enhancements contributed to the shorter fabrication time of multi-core fiber couplers. The multi-core fiber couplers fabricated by thermal diffusion technology have the advantages of high coupling efficiency, high integration, simple manufacture, and high mechanical strength. Enhancing the diffusion rate of optical fibers by using the hydrogen loading method will increase the application potential of multi-core optical fiber couplers prepared by thermal diffusion technology, and accelerate the translation of multi-core fibers toward optical communication and optical fiber sensing.

Abstract:We report a novel low-loss splicing approach for hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) and conventional single mode fiber (SMF) by inserting an etched SMF tip into the hollow core. If the divergence solid angle (DSA) of the inserted fiber tip is smaller than the guiding solid angle (GSA) of HC-PCF, all the radiated optical power from the tip will be collected by PCF with an extremely high coupling efficiency and guided by the PCF based on photonic bandgap effect. A DSA-GSA matching model is proposed to calculate the efficiency for different splicing situations. In the optimal condition of GSA > DSA, the transmission loss could approach zero, only including the scattering loss of etched fiber. Then, we experimentally demonstrate the splicing between NKT HC19-1550-01 and SMF28 with coupling efficiency of 84.5%, agreeing well with the theoretical result of 85%. In addition, our proposed method is coaxiality error free, angle deviation free, and insertion length insensitive. This new technique is expected to provide new possibilities in some special system designs for HC-PCF-based applications.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated a high-efficiency grating coupler by combining an interleaved etch and apodized structure for fiber-to-chip coupling. The grating coupler was optimized using the fast directional optimization method to achieve apodization. The grating coupler utilized a layout strategy involving an extended mask to avoid alignment errors for a multi-etch structure. The coupling efficiency was measured to be -2.2 dB at a wavelength of 1549 nm with a 3 dB bandwidth of 47 nm. The grating coupler, having no gold reflector, subwavelength index matching structure, or additional material layers, was fabricated using a commercial silicon photonics process with a minimum feature size of 140 nm. This grating coupler design provides a robust and effective coupling scheme and the proposed method can be employed to adopt the design in accordance with standard foundry design rules.

Abstract:Oriented to the multicore fiber-based space-division multiplexing (SDM) networks, the inter-core coupling in multicore fiber is desired to transfer signals between cores. In this paper, we proposed and designed an integrated optical coupler based on three-core fiber (TCF) with long-period gratings (LPGs). The TCF with three cores distributed in the cladding connected with single-mode fiber at both ends through adjacent cores. The self-coupling characteristics of TCF are studied firstly, and the effects of core pitch and coupling distance on coupling efficiency are analyzed to rule out the direct coupling between adjacent cores, indicating that coupling distance increases with the core pitch increases. With LPGs induced in TCF, coupling between core mode and cladding mode in each individual core is realized, and then the power at resonance wavelength transfers among cores through the overlapped cladding modes. Moreover, with the LPGs, the efficient coupling among adjacent cores in TCF has been realized at the C-band. In addition, the influence of structural parameters such as core pitch, grating duty cycle and coupling co-efficiency do affect the coupling efficiency of TCF-LPGs. By adjusting the structural parameters properly, coupling efficiency of ~ 66% could be achieved to equalizing the output power in three cores. Therefore, the proposed TCF-LPGs could be used as an optical coupler, which would be helpful in multicore fiber-based SDM networks.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the coupling characteristics of a few-mode twin-core all-solid photonic bandgap fiber. We show that extrema in the coupling length, reversal of the ordering of supermodes, and complete decoupling can occur in high-order modes. Using significant differences in the coupling characteristics between different modes, we can separate degenerate mode pairs such as LP11a and LP11b, and LP21a and LP21b, as well as modes with the same azimuthal quantum number, e.g., LP01 and LP02. Abstract:We report the experimental generation of a high-quality partially coherent dark hollow beam (DHB) by coupling a partially coherent beam into a multimode fiber (MMF) with a suitable incidence angle. The interference experiment of the generated partially coherent DHB passing through double slits is demonstrated. It is found that the coupling efficiency of the MMF, the quality, and the coherence of the generated partially coherent DHB are closely controlled by the coherence of the input beam.

Abstract:This paper introduces an optical power ring model for calculating the efficiency of fiber coupling. The model obtains more accurate results than the Gaussian model. This model compares the coupling efficiency of large core and standard multimode fiber and demonstrates that the tolerance of the large-core multimode fiber to the coupling misalignment and dust contamination is higher than that of the standard multimode fiber.

Abstract:The optical fiber taper coupling with its refractive index gradually changing along its propagation axis caused by photosensitivity was analyzed theoretically. The numerical results for two different taper shapes in step-index fiber show that the coupling of fundamental mode to the reflected mode and to high-order mode are relatively small provided the change is gradual. The experiment demonstrates that this index taper is suitable for interconnection of two dissimilar fibers. It may also be applicable for coupling of laser sources or integrated waveguides to fibers.

Abstract:A pump/signal fiber coupler with functions of pump light coupling and high-order-mode suppression is reported. This coupler is composed of pump fibers and a double-clad fiber (DCF) with high pump-coupling efficiency. The core of DCF is microdeformed in the coupling region, which serves mode selection. Theoretical analysis and experimental results verify these functions. In the experiment, the pump-coupling and signal-transmitting efficiency of the coupler were similar to 98% and similar to 96%, respectively. Abstract:We have demonstrated a mode matching method between two different fibers by a hybrid thermal expanded core technique, which can be applied to match the modes of fiber-based Fabry-Perot cavities. Experimentally, this method has achieved an expansion of the ultraviolet fiber core by 3.5 times while keeping fundamental mode propagation. With the experiment parameters, the fundamental mode coupling efficiency between the fiber and micro-cavity can reach 95% for a plano-concave cavity with a length of 400 mu m. This method can not only have potential in quantum photonics research but also can be applied in classical optical fields.

Abstract:Coupling losses for all-fiber integration of subwavelength core hybrid optical fibers have been first analyzed and optimized in detail. We have taken into account the effects of mode size, mode shape, effective refractive index, tapering beat length, interface, and endface reflections on the coupling loss. By optimizing parameters such as the subwavelength core diameter, single mode condition, and transition length, the coupling losses can be reduced. In addition, the influence of the core fabrication and misalignment tolerances have been explored. The results will benefit the all-fiber integration of hybrid optical fibers and their nanoengineering realization.
