Abstract:In an underwater environment, light always scatters and absorbs as it travels from the object to the camera, seriously affecting image quality. As a result, underwater images have poorer contrast, like a haze covering them. In this paper, a modified method for images restoration based on the dark channel prior (DCP) is presented, Firstly, the ambient light is estimated according to the difference between the blue and red channel. Then, attenuations of three RGB channels are obtained separately. Finally, a color collection is used to compensate the remaining color distortion. The experiments carried out at last demonstrate the good performance of this method for improving the visibility of underwater images.
Physical Prior Inspired Ensemble Learning Enables Effective Channel Estimation of Underwater Visible Light Communication.

Abstract:Deep neural networks have been applied to estimate the optical channel in communication systems. However, the underwater visible light channel is highly complex, making it challenging for a single network to accurately capture all its features. This paper presents a novel approach to underwater visible light channel estimation using a physical prior inspired network based on ensemble learning. A three-subnetwork architecture was developed to estimate the linear distortion from inter-symbol interference (ISI), quadratic distortion from signal-to-signal beat interference (SSBI), and higher-order distortion from the optoelectronic device. The superiority of the Ensemble estimator is demonstrated from both the time and frequency domains. In terms of mean square error performance, the Ensemble estimator outperforms the LMS estimator by 6.8 dB and the single network estimators by 15.4 dB. In terms of spectrum mismatch, the Ensemble estimator has the lowest average channel response error, which is 0.32 dB, compared to 0.81 dB for LMS estimator, 0.97 dB for the Linear estimator, and 0.76 dB for the ReLU estimator. Additionally, the Ensemble estimator was able to learn the V-shaped Vpp-BER curves of the channel, a task not achievable by single network estimators. Therefore, the proposed Ensemble estimator is a valuable tool for underwater visible light channel estimation, with potential applications in post-equalization, pre-equalization, and end-to-end communication.

Abstract:The underwater propagation environment for visible light signals is affected by complex factors such as absorption, shadowing, and reflection, making it very challengeable to achieve effective underwater visible light communication (UVLC) channel estimation. It is difficult for the UVLC channel to be sparse represented in the time and frequency domains, which limits the chance of using sparse signal processing techniques to achieve better performance of channel estimation. To this end, a compressed sensing (CS) based framework is established in this paper by fully exploiting the sparsity of the underwater visible light channel in the distance domain of the propagation links. In order to solve the sparse recovery problem and achieve more accurate UVLC channel estimation, a sparse learning based underwater visible light channel estimation (SL-UVCE) scheme is proposed. Specifically, a deep-unfolding neural network mimicking the classical iterative sparse recovery algorithm of approximate message passing (AMP) is employed, which decomposes the iterations of AMP into a series of layers with different learnable parameters. Compared with the existing non-CS-based and CS-based schemes, the proposed scheme shows better performance of accuracy in channel estimation, especially in severe conditions such as insufficient measurement pilots and large number of multipath components.

Hierarchically Sparse Channel Estimation for Underwater Visible Light Communication

Abstract:Materializing effective underwater visible light communication (UVLC) channel estimation is intractable due to the complex underwater propagation environment. Fortunately, the sparsity of UVLC channels can be judiciously utilized for improved channel estimation performance. However, the practical use of sparsity is precluded due to the unsatisfactory mutual incoherence property (MIP) of the sensing matrix. In this paper, we propose to achieve exceptional sparse channel estimation for UVLC. Specially, the intrinsic problem is modeled as a hierarchically sparse recovery formulation exploiting the near continuity of the channel’s distance ingredients. A brand-new algorithm, called hierarchically block orthogonal least squares (HiBOLS), is elaborated to provide assured performance with the stunning ability of addressing the impaired MIP issue. Furthermore, in-depth theoretical guarantees are developed to provide sufficient interpretability of HiBOLS. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed HiBOLS outperforms off-the-shelf algorithms from various perspectives including number of pilot sub-carriers, number of paths and signal-to-noise ratio.
A Novel Visible Light Communication Channel Compensation and Reconstruction Algorithm for Linear Decomposed CPM Signals

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a visible light communication (VLC) system using continuous phase modulation (CPM) and prove its advantage in energy efficiency over orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme. Furthermore, to ensure the feasibility of broadband communications in indoor optical multipath environments, we propose algorithms including linear decomposition-based channel compensation to combat the inter-symbol-interference (ISI) and correlation matrix-based highly power-efficient CPM signal reconstruction to recover the original CPM signal without multipath effects. Additionally, in the signal reconstruction algorithm, a condition-enhanced method is proposed to solve the condition number problem of correlation matrix. The algorithms are verified and evaluated in terms of the normalized mean squared error (NMSE) simulation and bit error rate (BER) experiments. The power efficiency, the fading compensation character promote the proposed CPM transceiver to be a practical VLC candidate.

Abstract:As the underwater applications require reliable, fast and efficient communications, the underwater visible light communication (VLC) is attracting more and more attention. Due to the complicated channel condition of the underwater environment, accurate channel estimation is still challenging for underwater VLC systems. This paper investigates the underwater VLC channel estimation problem by following two main assumptions. Firstly, the number of the channel paths is assumed to be much smaller than the channel length, which will obtain the sparsity property in the distance domain. Secondly, the attenuation coefficient is assumed to be approximately linear with the frequency, which is true when the modulation bandwidth is much more narrow compared with the carrier frequency. The compressive sensing (CS) framework is formulated based on the two assumptions, whose sensing matrix has a large coherence. In this condition, the Bayesian CS algorithm is adopted instead of the conventional schemes, and the subspace scheme is also investigated for comparison. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional ones in terms of mean square error (MSE), hence better system performance can be expected.

Abstract:Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems can transmit data with high speed and wide bandwidth. However they depend on the accuracy of channel characteristics which are obtained by channel estimation. In this paper, we propose a channel estimation algorithm by detecting significant channel taps in traditional discrete Fourier transform (DFT)based estimation and applying an adaptive noise threshold calculated by a variable smoothing equation. Numerical results suggest that the proposed channel estimation algorithm outperforms the traditional DFT-based estimation with fixed noise threshold for various SNRs.

Abstract:This Letter proposes a post-equalizer for underwater visible light communication(UVLC) systems that combines channel estimation and joint time-frequency analysis, named channel-estimation-based bandpass variable-order time-frequency network(CBV-TFNet). By utilizing a bandpass variable-order loss function with communication prior knowledge, CBVTFNet enhances communication performance and training stability. It enables lightweight implementation and faster convergence through a channel estimation-based mask. The superior performance of the proposed equalization method over Volterra and deep neural network(DNN)-based methods has been studied experimentally. Using bit-power loading discrete multitone (DMT) modulation, the proposed method achieves a transmission bitrate of 4.956 Gbps through a 1.2 m underwater channel utilizing only 38.15% of real multiplication calculations compared to the DNN equalizer and achieving a bitrate gain of440 Mbps and a significantly larger dynamic range over the LMS-Volterra equalizer. Results highlight CBV-TFNet's potential for future post-equalization in UVLC systems.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) has emerged as a promising communication method in the domain of underwater communication. However, the transmission rate is limited by the modulation bandwidth and the nonlinear effect of the LED. In this paper, we proposed a post-equalization method base on Bidirectional Gate Recurrent Unit (BGRU) and high order modulation format Amplitude phase shift keying (64APSK) is applied in underwater visible light communication (UVLC) for the first time. The excellent performance of nonlinearity compensation has been verified through experimental demonstration. With 64APSK and BGRU post-equalization, the transmission rate of underwater 1.2m distance is up to 3.19 Gbps. Compared to the traditional Least Mean Square (LMS) algorithm, the transmission rate increases 140 Mbps with VPP of 0.7V, current bias of 150mA and Q factor increases 2.4dB at the maximum with VPP of 0.9V, current bias of 150mA and bit rate of 3 Gbps. Compared to the Normal-64QAM, the transmission rate increases 65 Mbps and 64APSK shows a larger working range. All the results are demonstrated with 7% FEC of 3.8E-3 as a BER threshold. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time 64APSK and BGRU post-equalization are used in UVLC system and the bit rate exceeds 3 Gbps. BGRU is shown effective to deal with the nonlinear distortion and APSK modulation format is suitable for underwater high-power transmission, which are proved as a promising method in future UVLC.

Abstract:In this work, we proposed a Bidirectional Temporal Convolutional network (BiTCN) model to process signal post-equalization in underwater visible light communication channel (UVLC) for the first time. This strategy is more resistant to nonlinearities compared to traditional equalizers like least mean square (LMS) equalizer and avoids the inefficiency issue caused by the sequential processing requirement of Bidirectional Gate Recurrent Unit (BiGRU) networks, through this approach, we successfully conduct a transmission of a 64quadrature amplitude modulation-carrierless amplitude (64QAM-CAP) signal in a 1.2m underwater experiment using a blue laser operating at a wavelength of 450 nm. Remarkably, our system achieves a high data rate of 16.2 Gbps, all while maintaining the bit error rate (BER) below the 7% hard decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8E-3. Under optimal Peak-to-Peak Voltages (VPP) and bias current conditions, compared to the post equalization methods of LMS+Volterra and BiGRU, our proposed method achieved speed improvements of 550 and 210 Mbps, respectively.

Abstract:Underwater acoustic (UWA) communications are major tools for wireless data transmission in underwater environment. In recent years, multicarrier modulation has become one of the dominating methods in mitigating the time-delay and Doppler doubly-spread UWA acoustic channel. In this paper, one of the multicarrier modulations called filtered multitone (FMT) is proposed for UWA communications which splits the transmission bandwidth into several subbands with negligible inter-carrier interference (ICI). Considering the UWA channel model, a sparse structure that parameterizing the amplitude variation and delay variation of each path with polynomial approximation is investigated. Based on this structure, the channel estimation problem is transformed into estimating the parameter sets, e.g., delay spread and Doppler sc for each path, which characterize the UWA channel. After the construction of the estimation templates, orthogonal matching pursuits (OMP) algorithm which belongs to compressive sensing is adopt in this work for sparse channel estimation. The performance of the FMT sparse channel estimation for UWA communications is evaluated via numerical simulations.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel nonlinear resilient learning post equalizer named TFDNet in UVLC system. Unlike the traditional deep neural network (DNN) based post equalizers which merely consider the time domain, the proposed TFDNet exploits time-frequency image analysis which considers the time and frequency domains simultaneously and transforms the signal into 2D time-frequency image, which is further learned by neural network. Experimental results demonstrate that TFDNet outperforms Volterra and DNN based methods for compensating nonlinear distortions through a 1.2 & x00A0;m underwater channel using 64 quadrature amplitude modulation-carrierless amplitude modulation (64QAM-CAP). Even under severe nonlinear distortions where Volterra and DNN cannot work, TFDNet retains valid bit error rate (BER) below the 7 & x0025; forward error correction (FEC) limit of 3.8 & x00D7; 10(& x2212;3). The performance of TFDNet verifies the effectiveness of time-frequency image analysis which has been applied to tackle nonlinear distortions in UVLC system for the first time.
DNN-Based Demodulator/Post-equalizer and APSK Constellation Gain in Underwater Visible Light Communication System

Abstract:This research combines APSK and DNN to solve the power limitation and nonlinearity problem in underwater visible light communication (UVLC) systems. DNN performs both the demodulation and equalization tasks. Compared with QAM plus conventional post-equalization method, APSK with DNN demodulator increases the usable Vpp range by at most 75% and reduces the minimum BER by more than 30%. It shows that DNN, especially complex-valued DNN, would be promising in UVLC as an integrated demodulator/post-equalizer.

Abstract:As light is attenuated when disseminating in water, the clarity of images or videos captured under water is usually degraded to varying degrees. By exploring the difference in light attenuation between in atmosphere and in water, we derive a new underwater optical model to describe the formation of an underwater image in the true physical process, and then propose an effective enhancement algorithm with the derived optical model to improve the perception of underwater images or video frames. In our algorithm, a new underwater dark channel is derived to estimate the scattering rate, and an effective method is also presented to estimate the background light in the underwater optical model. Experimental results show that our algorithm can well handle underwater images, especially for deep-sea images and those captured from turbid waters.

Abstract:Orthogonal chirp division multiplexing (OCDM) offers a promising modulation technology for shallow water underwater acoustic (UWA) communication systems due to multipath fading resistance and Doppler resistance. To handle the various channel distortions and interferences, obtaining accurate channel state information is vital for robust and efficient shallow water UWA communication. In recent years, deep learning has attracted widespread attention in the communication field, providing a new way to improve the performance of physical layer communication systems. In this paper, the pilot-based channel estimation is transformed into a matrix completion problem, which is mathematically equivalent to the image super-resolution problem arising in the field of image processing. Simulation results show that the deep learning-based method can improve the channel distortion, outperforming the equalization performed by traditional estimator, the performance of Bit Error Rate is improved by 2.5 dB compared to the MMSE method in OCDM system. At the 7.5 to 20 dB region, it achieves better bit error rate performance than OFDM systems, and the bit error rate is reduced by approximately 53% compared to OFDM when the SNR value is 20, which is very useful in shallow water UWA channels with multipath extension and severe time-varying characteristics.

Abstract:Due to medium scattering, absorption, and complex light interactions, capturing objects from the underwater environment has always been a difficult task. Single-pixel imaging (SPI) is an efficient imaging approach that can obtain spatial object information under low-light conditions. In this paper, we propose a single-pixel object inspection system for the underwater environment based on compressive sensing super-resolution convolutional neural network (CS-SRCNN). With the CS-SRCNN algorithm, image reconstruction can be achieved with 30% of the total pixels in the image. We also investigate the impact of compression ratios on underwater object SPI reconstruction performance. In addition, we analyzed the effect of peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity index (SSIM) to determine the image quality of the reconstructed image. Our work is compared to the SPI system and SRCNN method to demonstrate its efficiency in capturing object results from an underwater environment. The PSNR and SSIM of the proposed method have increased to 35.44% and 73.07%, respectively. This work provides new insight into SPI applications and creates a better alternative for underwater optical object imaging to achieve good quality.

Abstract:The nonlinearity of the light-emitting diode (LED) in underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems is considered the one major limiting factor that degrades the system's performance. Volterra series-based nonlinear equalization is widely employed to mitigate such nonlinearity in communication systems. However, the conventional Volterra series-based model is of high complexity, especially for the nonlinearity of higher-order terms or longer memory lengths. In this paper, by pruning away some negligible beating terms and adaptively picking out some of the dominant terms while discarding the trivial ones, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a sparse pruned-term-based nonlinear decision-feedback equalization (SPT-NDFE) scheme for the LED-based UWOC system with an inappreciable performance degradation as compared to systems without the pruning strategy. Meanwhile, by replacing the self/cross beating terms with the terms formed by the absolute operation of a sum of two input samples instead of the product operation terms, a sparse pruned-term-based absolute operation nonlinear decision-feedback equalization (SPT-ANDFE) scheme is also introduced to further reduce complexity. The experimental results show that the SPT-NDFE scheme exhibits comparable performance as compared to the conventional NDFE (nonlinear decision-feedback equalization) scheme with lower complexity (the nonlinear coefficients are reduced by 63.63% as compared to the conventional NDFE scheme). While the SPT-ANDFE scheme yields suboptimal performance with further reduced complexity at the expense of a slight performance degradation, the robustness of the proposed schemes in different turbidity waters is experimentally verified. The proposed channel equalization schemes with low complexity and high performance are promising for power/energy-sensitive UWOC systems. (C) 2022 Optica Publishing Group

Abstract:Underwater visible light communication (UVLC) is expected to act as an alternative candidate in next-generation underwater 5G wireless optical communications. To realize high-speed UVLC, the challenge is the absorption, scattering, and turbulence of a water medium and the nonlinear response from imperfect optoelectronic devices that can bring large attenuations and a nonlinearity penalty. Nonlinear adaptive filters are commonly used in optical communication to compensate for nonlinearity. In this paper, we compare a recursive least square (RLS)-based Volterra filter, a least mean square (LMS)-based digital polynomial filter, and an LMS-based Volterra filter in terms of performance and computational complexity in underwater visible light communication. We experimentally demonstrate 2.325 Gb/s transmission through 1.2 m of water with a commercial blue light-emitting diode. Our goal is to assist the readers in refining the motivation, structure, performance, and cost of powerful nonlinear adaptive filters in the context of future underwater visible light communication in order to tap into hitherto unexplored applications and services.
