Abstract:The optical heterodyne radio over fiber (RoF) link using single-sideband (SSB) modulation has advantage in system scalability, tunability, as well as resistance to chromatic dispersion induced frequency selective fading. However, the phase noise which seriously degrades system performance, is a major obstacle to employ low-cost free-running lasers in the aforementioned link. In this paper, the RF pilot tone (RFP) phase noise cancellation (PNC) based on dual drive Mach–Zehnder modulator SSB modulation for optical heterodyne RoF link is investigated and demonstrated. Two kinds of RFP PNC schemes, carrier whole multiplication (CWM) and carrier signal multiplication (CSM), are both derived theoretically and verified experimentally. The impacts of carrier signal power ratio, carrier filter bandwidth and guard band on system performance are studied in detail. The results show that, the RFP-CSM scheme can improve the spectral efficiency by 62.5% and receiver sensitivity of 1.2 dB for 1.25 Gbps quadrature phase shift keying signal at a BER of 3.8 ×10−3, as compared with the RFP-CWM scheme and power detection scheme, mainly attributed to the absence of the second-order nonlinear intermodulation distortion. Furthermore, the RFP-CSM scheme demonstrates good phase noise robustness with different high-order modulation formats under two kinds of linewidth local oscillator lasers.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally investigate the performance of two self-heterodyne detected radio-over-fiber (RoF) links employing phase modulation (PM) and quadrature biased intensity modulation (IM), in terms of bit-error rate (BER) and optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR). In both links, self-heterodyne receivers perform down-conversion of the RF subcarrier signal. A theoretical model including noise analysis is constructed to calculate the Q factor and estimate the BER performance. Furthermore, we experimentally validate our prediction from the theoretical modeling. Both the experimental and theoretical results show that the PM link offers superior OSNR receiver sensitivity performance (more than 6 dB) over the quadrature biased IM counterpart.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally investigate a scheme for transmitting a phase-modulated (PM) radio-over-fiber (RoF) signal along an existing fiber infrastructure without degradation of the existing baseband signal. Optical phase encoding of both signals, namely a baseband 21.4-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero differential quaternary phase-shift keyed signal and a 5.25-GHz RoF carrying 1.25 Gb/s, enables the use of identical optical receiver structures. The experimental results show that both receivers achieve error-free operation after 80-km standard single-mode fiber transmission. The proposed scheme has potential applications for converged wireless and wireline optical access networks.

Abstract:A dispersion-free scheme for stable multi-access radio frequency dissemination in a fibre loop link is proposed and demonstrated. The phase jitter and dispersion-induced power fading are suppressed simultaneously by transmitting different single-band signals in opposite propagating directions. Experimentally, a 2.5 GHz radio frequency signal is steadily transmitted to different remote sites, with phase deviations less than 0.6 ps over 15,000 s.

Abstract:Long-haul optical fiber communication employing digital signal processing (DSP)-based dispersion compensation can be distorted by the phenomenon of equalization-enhanced phase noise (EEPN), due to the reciprocities between the dispersion compensation unit and the local oscillator (LO) laser phase noise (LPN). The impact of EEPN scales increases with the increase of the fiber dispersion, laser linewidths, symbol rates, signal bandwidths, and the order of modulation formats. In this work, the phase noise cancellation (PNC) employing a radio frequency (RF) pilot tone in coherent optical transmission systems has been investigated. A 28-Gsym/s QPSK optical transmission system with a significant EEPN has been implemented, where the carrier phase recovery (CPR) was realized using the one-tap normalized least-mean-square (NLMS) estimation and the differential phase detection (DPD), respectively. It is shown that the RF pilot tone can entirely eliminate the LPN and efficiently suppress the EEPN when it is applied prior to the CPR.

Abstract:An approach to transmitting two independent microwave vector signals on a single optical carrier with one polarization state based on coherent detection and digital phase noise cancellation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. At the transmitter, two independent microwave vector signals are modulated on an optical carrier via a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DD-MZM). The modulated optical signals are transmitted over a single-mode fiber (SMF) and sent to a coherent receiver. At the receiver, the optical signals are detected where a local oscillator (LO) optical wave generated by a second free-running laser source is also applied. To recover the two microwave vector signals, a novel digital signal processing (DSP) algorithm is developed and applied to eliminate the joint phase noise terms from the transmitter and the LO laser sources as well as the unstable offset frequency between the two laser sources. An experiment is performed. The transmission of two independent 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) microwave vector signals at 4 GHz with a symbol rate of 1 GSymbs over a 9-km SMF is demonstrated. The transmission performance in terms of error vector magnitudes (EVMs) and bit error rates (BERs) is also evaluated.

Abstract:An approach to suppressing Brillouin scattering-induced noise in long-haul high-power radio-over-fiber (RoF) links is proposed via non-uniformly distributed four-tone phase modulation. Four single-tone signals with uneven frequency intervals are utilized to phase modulate the optical signal before transmission. The power transferring from the optical carrier to the non-uniformly distributed modulation sidebands largely suppresses the Brillouin scattering-induced relative intensity noise (RIN). In the experiment, transmission of a 64-QAM wireless communication signal centered at 10 GHz and with a bandwidth of 100 MHz is demonstrated. The threshold of the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a high-power RoF link involving a spool of a single-mode fiber (SMF) with a length of 20.5 km is increased by 11 dB based on this scheme, compared with that without phase modulation. Under an input optical power of 19 dBm, the error vector magnitude (EVM) and the adjacent channel leakage ratio (ACLR) are optimized from 34.39% to 1.32% and from -20.73 dBc to -35.32 dBc, without and with phase modulation, respectively. This scheme paves a way to realizing long-haul high-power RoF links for efficiently transmitting broadband wireless communication signals in cloud radio access networks (C-RANs).

Abstract:In this Letter, we propose a fiber-optic radio frequency (RF) transfer based on active phase noise compensation adopting a carrier suppressed double-sideband (CSDSB) signal. The forward CSDSB signal is generated based on the transmitted RF signal at the local site to discriminate from the backward RF signal. The forward and backward signals are transmitted over the same fiber with the same wavelength to guarantee the bidirectional propagation symmetry. The impact of backscattering is efficiently suppressed by electrical filtering at the sites. A 1 GHz signal transfer over a 40 km optical link is performed in a laboratory. The results show that the proposed scheme can improve the short-term stability from 1.9 e - 13/s to 3.9 e - 14/s in contrast to the scheme with backscattering while reaching a long-term stability of 2.0 e - 16/10000 s. Abstract:In this letter, the impact of the dispersion-induced phase noise (PN) on the transmitted signals in single-sideband (SSB) modulation radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems was investigated. We experimentally demonstrated that the fiber chromatic dispersion-induced phase mismatch between the two heterodyne optical tones will increase the error vector magnitude and phase error of the transmitted signal as the fiber transmission distance grows. We also proposed a phase adjustment technique employing an optical spectrum processor to suppress such PN, and an SSB modulation RoF system at 60 GHz with PN suppression was accomplished accordingly.

Abstract:A pre-coding-assisted power detection scheme for radio over fiber downlink is presented. This scheme can eliminate laser phase noise while avoiding high energy-consuming electrical carrier required in conventional power and/or envelope detection schemes. Theoretical analysis and experimental verification are performed. 0.625 Gbaud pre-coded quadrature phase-shift keying or 16 quadrature amplitude modulation signals can both be recovered by power detection without electrical carrier assistance at the receiver after 75 km fiber transmission. Not only robust against the laser phase noise, an improvement of about 5 dB in receiver sensitivity can also be achieved, as compared with the conventional power detection scheme.

Abstract:In this Letter, we propose and demonstrate a multi-access fiber-optic radio frequency dissemination with passive phase noise cancelation. A forward phase-conjugated signal is generated at the local site by frequency mixing between the standard signal and the round-trip probe signal. A stable frequency signal is achieved by frequency mixing the tapped forward phase-conjugated signal and the backward probe signal at an arbitrary point along the fiber link. Different wavelengths for forward and backward directions are employed to efficiently suppress the effect of backscat-tering. At the same time, the increase of bidirectional asymmetry with the increase of user ends is avoided by employing the same wavelengths for all user ends. A multi-access frequency transfer over a 45 km fiber link based on the proposed scheme is demonstrated. The radio frequency signals with relative frequency stabilities of 10(-17) /20; 000 s level are reproduced at two points of 5 and 40 km far from the local site along the fiber link, respectively. Abstract:We propose a high spectral efficiency coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system utilizing a novel and almost blind phase noise compensation method. With the aid of pseudo pilots instead of pilots, laser phase noise can be suppressed effectively while the overhead of system is reduced successfully. Numerical results show that the performance of the proposed pseudo pilot-aided phase noise compensation scheme can approach that of the pilot-aided counterpart, yet achieve higher spectral efficiency even when the phase noise is severe.

Abstract:A photonic approach for radio-frequency (RF) self-interference cancellation (SIC) incorporated in an in-band full-duplex radio-over-fiber system is proposed. A dual-polarization binary phase-shift keying modulator is used for dual-polarization multiplexing at the central office (CO). A local oscillator signal and an intermediate-frequency signal carrying the downlink data are single-sideband modulated on the two polarization directions of the modulator, respectively. The optical signal is then transmitted to the remote unit, where the optical signals in the two polarization directions are split into two parts. One part is detected to generate the up-converted downlink RF signal, and the other part is re-modulated by the uplink RF signal and the self-interference, which is then transmitted back to the CO for the signal down-conversion and SIC via the optical domain signal adjustment and balanced detection. The functions of SIC, frequency up-conversion, down-conversion, and fiber transmission with dispersion immunity are all incorporated in the system. An experiment is performed. Cancellation depths of more than 39 dB for the single-tone signal and more than 20 dB for the 20-MBaud 16 quadrature amplitude modulation signal are achieved in the back-to-back case. The performance of the system does not have a significant decline when a section of 4.1-km optical fiber is incorporated.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the phase noise elimination employing an optical pilot carrier in the high speed coherent transmission system considering the equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN). The numerical simulations are performed in a 28-Gsymbol/s quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) coherent system with a polarization multiplexed pilot carrier. The carrier phase estimation is implemented by the one-tap normalized least mean square (NLMS) filter and the differential phase detection, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate that the application of the optical pilot carrier is very effective for the intrinsic laser phase noise cancellation, while is less efficient for the EEPN mitigation.

Abstract:We report on the realization of an optical phase noise cancellation technique by passively embedding the optical phase noise information into a radio frequency signal and creating a copy of the optical frequency signal, which is pre-corrected by the amount of phase noise introduced by optical phase perturbations. Neither phase discrimination nor an active servo controller is required due to the open-loop design, mitigating some technical problems, such as the limited compensation speed and finite phase/timing jitter, in conventional phase noise cancellation. We experimentally demonstrate that this technique maintains the same delay-limited bandwidth and phase noise suppression capability as in conventional techniques, but significantly shortens the response speed and phase recovery time. Passive decoupling optical phase perturbation represents a powerful technique in the domains of optical frequency standard comparisons and tools for future optical atomic clocks, which are now under investigation for a potential redefinition of the International Time Scale.

Abstract:We demonstrate a photonic radio-frequency transmission system via optical fiber. Optical radio-frequency signal is generated utilizing a Mach-Zehnder modulator based on double-side-band with carrier suppression modulation scheme. The phase error induced by optical fiber transmission is transferred to an intermediate frequency signal by the dual-heterodyne phase error transfer scheme, and then canceled by a phase locked loop. With precise phase compensation, a radio frequency with high-phase stability can be obtained at the remote end. We performed 20.07-GHz radio-frequency transfer over 100-km optical fiber, and achieved residual phase noise of -65 dBc/Hz at 1-Hz offset frequency, and the RMS timing jitter in the frequency range from 0.01 Hz to 1 MHz reaches 110 fs. The long-term frequency stability also achieves 8 x 10(-17) at 10,000 s averaging time. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We report on a new method for cascaded long-haul fiber-optic radio frequency (RF) transfer. The phase noise compensation device is placed at the relay site to simultaneously compensate for phase noise coming from the front and the second segment fibers. At the same time, the technique can have the capability to share the modulated optical signal for the both links, simplifying the configuration at the relay site. This scheme not only greatly simplifies the cascaded RF transfer system but also effectively improves the system noise floor. Experimentally, we demonstrated a 1 GHz signal transfer over a 210 km (100+110 km) fiber-optic link, achieving the fractional frequency stability less than 2.3 similar to 10(-14) at 1 s and 5.4 similar to 10(-17) at 10,000 s.

Abstract:We propose a passive compensation fiber-optic radio frequency (RF) transfer scheme with a nonsynchronized RF stable source during a round-trip time, which can avoid high-precision phase-locking and efficiently suppress the effect of backscattering only using two wavelengths at the same time. A stable frequency signal is directly reproduced by frequency mixing at the remote site. The proposed scheme is validated by the experiment over a 40 km single mode fiber spool using nonsynchronized common commercial RF sources. The influence of the stability of nonsynchronized RF sources on the frequency transfer is investigated over different length fiber links.
