Abstract:Novel ionic liquids with dual acidity, of which the cation contains Bronsted acidity and anions contain Lewis acidity were synthesized. These ionic liquids obtained were identified by NMR, FT-IR, SDT and FAB-MS. Their acidities were determined by pyridine probe on IR spectrography.

Abstract:Several water-stable Brønsted-acidic ionic liquids with an alkane sulfonic acid group were synthesized, and were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared spectrum (IR), electrospray ionization mass spectrum (ESI-MS) and thermogravimetry (TG.). It was found that their structures were consistent with the designed one and all of their purities were more than 95%. These ionic liquids possess high thermal stability and wide liquid range, and their decomposition temperatures are higher than 300 degrees C by analyzing TG. In addition, they were found to have four kinds of ionic form, in which hydrogen ion can exist independently by analyzing ESI-MS. Moreover, the solubility of these ionic liquids was studied in some common solvents. All the ionic liquids are miscible with water and methanol, but are insoluble in ether, toluene and ethyl acetate.

Abstract:The design of multifunctional ionic liquids (ILs) that integrate different attractive characteristics, such as strong hydrogen-bonding interactions, good lipophilicity, significant nanoscale organization, and low viscosity, in a molecular structure is of great importance for the application of ILs in extraction, biomass conversion, and catalysis but remains challenging. Here, we synthesized a family of novel phosphonium ILs featuring branched chain carboxylate anions with carbon number up to 18 and systematically characterized the physicochemical properties of prepared Its. The branched chain carboxylate ILs (BCC-ILs) exhibit very strong hydrogen bond basicity (beta = 1.49-1.72, 30 degrees C) and excellent lipophilicity (pi* = 0.73-0.95, 30 degrees C), and have obvious nanoscale segregation and moderate viscosity (eta = 91.8-200.5 mPa, 40 degrees C). The d value of BCC-ILs ranged from 10.5 to 15.6 angstrom when the length of alkyl chain in anions or cation rose. These nanostructured solvents can undergo self-assembly processes with typical bioactive molecules of cholesterol to form highly ordered mesoscopic structures through cooperative hydrogen-bond and van der Waals interactions, which enable unprecedented high solubility of cholesterol in BCC-ILs (molar solubilities 0.31-1.12 at 50 degrees C). Additionally, we found that n-heptane had the significant synergistic effect on the dissolution of cholesterol molecules, and the introduction of n-heptane promoted the formation of highly ordered lamellar liquid crystals in the BCC-IL/cholesterol system. The dissolving mechanism of BCC-ILs for bioactive molecules was explored by experimental studies. This work indicates that the multifunctional BCC-ILs are promising solvents for extractions, catalysis, and biomass conversion.
Investigation of the Acidity of Ionic Liquids by IR Spectroscopy

Abstract:The determination of the acidity of ionic liquids is of crucial significance to the utilization of ionic liquids. By using pyridine and acetonitrile as IR spectroscopic probes, the acidity of common room temperature ionic liquids was determined. For the probe pyridine, the IR band near 1450, 1540 cm(-1) of pyridine is indicative the Lewis/Bronsted acidity of ionic liquids respectively. For another probe acetonitrile, the increase of the C = N stretching wave number near 2253 cm(-1) with a new band appear at the higher wave number is indicative of the Lewis acidity. The influence of the structure of ionic liquids on the Lewis/Bronsted acidity by the IR spectroscopy was investigeted. The Lewis acid strength of different ionic liquids has been compared through the shift of the 1450 cm(-1) of pyridine. A more obvious comparison of the Lewis acid intensity of different ionic liquids has been made by acetonitrile probe.

Abstract:The novel multi-SO 3 H functionalized strong Brønsted acidic ionic liquid has been prepared and its catalytic activities were investigated through the acetalization. The results showed that the novel catalyst was very efficient for the reaction with the average yield over 90% under solvent-free condition at room temperature. Operational simplicity, without need of any solvent, a small amount of usage, low cost of the catalyst used, high yields, applicability to large-scale reactions and reusability are the key features of this methodology. The novel catalyst also has great potential for the green process.

Abstract:As a class of alternative green solvents and catalysts, ionic liquids play an important role in catalytic and organic reactions.Over the last years, acidic ionic liquids have evoked particular attention because of their ability to provide dense reactive sites like liquid acids and non-volatility like solid acids.Therefore, acidic ionic liquids are ideal for replacing traditional liquid/solid acids.The acidity of ionic liquids has strong influence on the activity of the involved chemical reactions and the selectivity of reaction sites.In Diels-Alder reaction, for example, chemical reaction rates and selectivity in acidic ionic liquids proved to be far superior to that observed in traditional polar and nonpolar media.Determination of acidity of ionic liquids, therefore, is very important for understanding the mechanisms of the respective catalytic reactions and searching for high efficient catalysts.In this mini review, we summarized the recent progress in establishing molecular probe-based spectroscopic methods to determine the acidity of ionic liquids.First, phenylamine and its derivatives have been used as UV-visible spectroscopic probes, through which the Hammett acidity functions(H0) can be evaluated.Second, mesityl oxide has been proposed as anuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic probe.The Hammett acidity can be derived with the help of a calibration curve of 13C NMR spectrum.These two methods determine the Bronsted acidity of ionic liquids.Third, acetonitrile and pyridine have been employed as infrared spectroscopicprobes, through which the relative strength of Lewis acidity of various ionic liquids can be compared qualitatively.In comparing the three methods, each has its merits and disadvantages.The first two are quantitative methods, whilst the third one is only a qualitative means.The low solubility of the UV-vis probes in ionic liquids may greatly affect their application.Overlapping of peaks may be a big problem of the UV-vis and IR-based methods.Readers are suggested to select the simplest, fastest, and most accurate method to meet their needs.

Abstract:Two novel ionic liquids, N,N'-disalicylideneethylenediaminium acetate and N,N'-disalicylideneethylenediaminium trifluoroacetate, were prepared and characterized by IR, H-1 NMR, DTA-TG and elemental analysis. The experimental results indicate that the new ionic liquids possess lower melting point and higher electrical conductivity. It is noteworthy that the ionic liquids reported herein are the first member of the ionic liquid family with the Schiff base functional group in the cation.

Abstract:The acidities of 40 commonly seen cations of ionic liquids (CILs) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) were investigated by a well-established theoretical method, SMD/M06-2X/6-311++G (2df,2p)//B3LYP/6-31+G(d). The calculated p Ka's agree excellently with the available experimental data and range from 20.0 to 45.8 with an acidity order of 1,3-dialkylimidazolium > amidinium > pyridinium > tetraalkylphosphonium > morpholinium > pyrrolidinium ≈ piperidinium > guanadinim cations. The established acidity scale in this work provides a useful tool, as verified by the acidity comparisons, to assess the stability of ILs under various extent basic conditions, and also reveals the relative basicity of several classical N-heterocyclic carbenes and olefins as well as ylides.

Abstract:A series of cyno-group functionalized ionic liquids were synthesized and characterized by H-1 NMR and elemental analysis. The density, melting point and solubility of the ionic liquids were affected by the length of substituted group and the chemical structures of anions. The rheological properties of the ionic liquids under steady, transient and dynamic state were studied with a rheometer over a wide range of temperature and frequencies. It was found that the ionic liquids studied could be considered as Newtonian fluids. Arrhenius equation was employed to describe the relationship between the viscosity and the temperature. The viscous flow activation energy of the ionic liquids calculated was changed regularly with the length change of alkyl substituent. Under transient state condition, the shear stress and viscosity of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-(beta-propanenitrile) imidazolium hexafluorophosphate, as an example, kept constant with the change of time while the shear speed was fixed. However, a decreasing trend was observed when the temperature was increased. The dynamic rheological properties of this ionic liquid were also studied. The complex viscosity and loss modulus were also decreased with increasing temperature.

Abstract:Several water-stable Bronsted-acidic task-specific ionic liquids (TSILs) with an alkane sulfonic acid group in a pyridinium cation were synthesized. These TSILs show good catalytic activity to esterification reactions of benzoic acid with methanol, ethanol, and butanol. The catalytic activity of each TSIL is dependent on its anion. The experimental results indicate that the increasing of the anion's Bronsted acidity improves the catalytic activity of the TSIL. Furthermore, the high degree of partial immisciblity of TSILs with the produced esters facilitates the esterification reaction equilibrium, shifting it to the product side. The TSIL with [HSO4](-) as the anion shows the best catalytic activity and biphasic behavior between the TSIL and the produced esters. The produced esters could be separated by decantation, and the TSILs could be reused after the removal of water.

Abstract:The Brønsted acidities of sulfonic acid-functionalized ionic liquids (SFILs) with pyridinium cations were investigated. The Hammett function values of SFILs are between −1.5 and −3.6 at 110°C. The acidities of SFILs depend on the anions, and have the order as follows: [PSPy][BF4]>[PSPy][HSO4]>[PSPy][pTSA]>[PSPy][H2PO4] ([PSPy]=N-propane–sulfonic acid pyridinium). The acidity order of SFILs is consistent with their activity order observed in some acid-catalyzed reactions. The minimum-energy geometries of SFILs manifest that anions have strong interactions with the sulfonic acid proton. It is considered that in addition to the alkyl sulfonic acid group, the anion is likely to serve as available acid sites. Hence the acidities and catalytic activities of SFILs depend on the kinds of anions.

Abstract:The novel efficient procedure has been developed for the oxathioacetalization of carbonyl compounds and 2-mercaptoethanol at room temperature under solvent-free condition. Abstract:The acidity of chloroaluminate ionic liquids and the interaction mechanism of Lewis acid site Al2Cl7- of chloroaluminate ionic liquid and pyridine were experimentally investigated by IR characterization by using pyridine as molecular probe and increasing pyridine adsorption, and theoretically confirmed by quantum chemical calculations at density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio levels. It was found that the anions, Al2Cl7- and AlCl4-, which could withdraw lone pair electrons of pyridine, were characteristic of Lewis acid Therefore, they displayed pyridine coordinated to Lewis acidic site using pyridine as probe. The acidity of Al2Cl7- was found stronger than that of AlCl4- by analyzing IR absorption frequency, bond length and charge distribution. The mechanism of forming and evolvement of the Lewis acid site Al2Cl7- of chloroaluminate ionic liquid was proposed. When the amount of pyridine is small, only the adsorption state of Py-Al2Cl7- exists. The highly Lewis acidic adsorption state of Py-Al2Cl7- complex was converted into Py-AlCl4- complex and Py-AlCl3 complex with increasing pyridine contents, leading to the changes in IR absorption spectra.

Abstract:The present study elaborates on the synthesis, crystal structure, and computational studies of two new ionic liquids. In the crystal structure, [C5H12N][C21H14ClN2O2S] (4a), the anions form chains along the a-axis direction through C—H···π(ring) interactions. These are connected into layers that run approximately parallel to the ac plane by a variety of hydrogen bonds. In the compound structure, [C5H12N][C18H15N2O2S] (4b), the two ions are primarily associated by an N—H···N hydrogen bond. In the crystal structure, layers parallel to the bc plane are formed by pairs of C—H···O and N—H···S hydrogen bonds and by C—H···π(ring) interactions. A theoretical study reveals that 4a has lower energy than 4b and is more stable. The NBO and DOS studies further confine the liquids’ structural reactivity and electronic properties. The quantum theory of atoms in a molecule (QTAIM) analysis reveals the important non-covalent interactions among the fragments and charge transfer. The global reactivity descriptors indicate their molecular reactivity relationship with the presence of functional groups. The remarkable polarizability (αo) and hyperpolarizability (βo) values indicate their optical and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. Furthermore, the analysis performed by CrystalExplorer shows the intermolecular interactions and reactive sites between cations and anions in ionic liquids. The 2D fingerprint plots and Hirshfeld surfaces indicate the major interactions of crystals with neighboring elements in crystal packing. For both compounds, the H···H interactions are significantly higher than the other element interactions.

Abstract:The length of the alkyl groups and the symmetry of the cations in tetraalkylammonium-based ionic liquids affect the physical properties and their applications.A novel class of ionic liquids based on triethylbutylammonium cation was prepared in our group.In this series,(CF3SO2)2N-[bis(trifluoromethanesufonyl)imide],PF6-,BF4-,HSO4-,SCN-and PTSA-(p-toluenesulfonic acid) were assigned to be the counter ions for the ionic liquids.The synthesis of ionic liquids started with the reaction of triethylamine and n-butyl bromide,followed by the ionic exchange using LiNTf2,KPF6,NH4BF4,(Ag2O and H2SO4),KSCN and(Ag2O and PTSA) as the reactants.Then the residue was extracted with diethyl ether for several times to get the pure product.1H NMR,thermal analysis,cone-plate viscometry,densitometer method,element analysis are applied to determine the structures and properties of these ionic liquids.It is found that these ILs have lower melting points and viscosities compared to the corresponding ionic liquids with symmetrical tetraalkyammonium cations,indicating the significant importance of the asymmetrical cation on the physical properties of the ILs.The miscibility of these ILs with some common solvents was studied,and the relationship between configuration and property of the ILs were also discussed.

Abstract:A novel category of salts based on diacetone acrylamide cation (DA(+)) and the anions such as acetate (Ac-), trifluoroacetate (TF-), tetrafluoroborate (BF-), hexafluorophosphate (PF-), sulfate (SO-) and chloride (Cl-) were synthesized by usual neutralization of acids and bases at room temperature and characterized by IR, H-1 NMR and elemental analysis (EA). The results show that these compounds possess the characteristic of ionic liquids. In addition, four of them, DABF, DACl, DASO and DAPF, were efficient catalysts for esterication of acetic acid with C-1-C-6 alcohols and octanol.

Abstract:Heterogeneous systems containing ionic liquids (ILs) with gases and solvents extend the acpplications of ILs in absorption, extraction and heterogeneous catalysis. In recent years, the surface/interfacial properties and surface/interfacial structures of ionic liquids have been widely studied, because they are important due to their remarkable effects on heterogeneous reactions and separation efficiency. In this article, the surface/interfacial tension, as well as the surface/interfacial structures of ILs and their mixtures with water and organic solvents are summarized. The research methods, objectives and results are introduced. The relationship between surface/interfacial tension and surface/interfacial structures is elucidated. Finally, the exiting problems and development prospects of the studies on surface/interfacial properties and surface/interfacial structures of ILs are discussed.

Abstract:Used N-methylimidazole,pyridine and bromoalkanes as raw materials,four types of ionic liquids 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide salt Br,1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide salt Br,N-ethylpyridine bromide saltBr and N-butylpyridine bromide salt(Br) were synthesized without solvent under the conditions of ultrasound intermittent operation.Their melting points were measured at room temperature.Results showed the bigger of the size of organic cation in ionic liquids with the same anion the smaller of melting point of the ionic liquids Compared with conventional synthesis,the reaction time was drastically reduced and a higher yield was obtained.Then the Br as an intermediate,a hydrophilic ionic liquid BF4 and hydrophobic ionic liquid PF6 were prepared through anion-exchange.Their viscosity was determined at 25 ℃.The six ionic liquids synthesized were characterized by 1H NMR,13C NMR and IR spectra.
