Abstract:Molecular vibrational spectroscopy is an important method to study the atomic structure of graphene oxide. To investigate the effect of oxidation on the structural and spectroscopic properties of graphene, pseudo-potential density functional theory calculations were applied. Several models were considered, covering the most relevant functional groups that have been postulated to decorate the surface of graphene layer on carbon materials. Different arrangements of these units produced a range of vibrational spectra. The results suggested the possibility of creating and tuning graphene’s spectroscopic properties by varying the oxidation levels and the relative position of epoxy and hydroxyl functional groups on the surface. Spectra characteristics for local structures from this work shed light on the structural and vibrational properties of graphene oxide, which could be very helpful for experimental groups to further understand the structure of graphene oxide and reduce graphene oxide.

Abstract:First-principles calculations have been employed to investigate structures and electronic properties of oxidized graphene. Based on the calculations of binding energy, the stable configurations of single and double O atoms adsorbed on graphene have been firstly explored. Subsequently, two types of geometrical structures of oxidized graphenes with O/C ratio of 1/2 have been discovered, and both exhibit rectangular symmetries with all C atoms in sp(3) hybridizations. By using ab initio molecular-dynamics simulations, it is demonstrated that these oxidized graphenes could be maintained at room temperature. Besides, electronic band structures show that both two oxidized graphenes are semiconductors with wide direct band gaps at the Gamma-point. The characteristics of atomic orbital contributions at valence band maximum and conduction band minimum have been analyzed. Our study suggests the possibility of opening a band gap of graphene by oxidizations and may provide the ground state of oxidized graphene. Copyright (c) EPLA, 2014

Abstract:We have systematically investigated the effect of oxidation on the structural and electronic properties of graphene based on first-principles calculations. Energetically favorable atomic configurations and building blocks are identified, which contain epoxide and hydroxyl groups in close proximity with each other. Different arrangements of these units yield an LDA band gap over a range of a few eV. These results suggest the possibility of creating and tuning the band gap in graphene by varying the oxidation level and the relative amount of epoxide and hydroxyl functional groups on the surface.

Abstract:When it is oxidized, graphite can be easily exfoliated forming graphene oxide (GO). GO is a critical intermediate for massive production of graphene, and it is also an important material with various application potentials. With many different oxidation species randomly distributed on the basal plane, GO has a complicated nonstoichiometric atomic structure that is still not well understood in spite of of intensive studies involving many experimental techniques. Controversies often exist in experimental data interpretation. We report here a first principles study on binding energy of carbon 1s orbital in GO. The calculated results can be well used to interpret experimental X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data and provide a unified spectral assignment. Based on the first principles understanding of XPS, a GO structure model containing new oxidation species epoxy pair and epoxy-hydroxy pair is proposed. Our results demonstrate that first principles computational spectroscopy provides a powerful means to investigate GO structure.

The role of oxygen in mechanochemical wear of graphene

Abstract:As a protective coating with wide applications due to its outstanding stiffness and chemical inert, graphene often undergoes significantly local stress and chemical etching in practical use conditions, but the degeneration mechanism of graphene under the mechanical and chemical coupling remains largely open. In this work, the experimental measurement demonstrates that the edges of graphene are vulnerable to mechanochemical wear mainly due to the attack from oxygen atoms. Atomic simulations of density functional theory calculations reveal that the C–C networks of graphene are broken through the stress-driven chemical reactions of interfacial bonds formation between graphene edges and the reactive counterface, leading to oxidation unzipping of graphene under low shear stress. The studies suggest the anti-wear performance of graphene edges can be tuned by suppressing interfacial bonds forming.

Engineering graphene by oxidation: a first principles study

Abstract:Graphene epoxide, with oxygen atoms lining up on pristine graphene sheets, is investigated theoretically in this Letter. Two distinct phases: metastable clamped and unzipped structures are unveiled in consistence with experiments. In the stable (unzipped) phase, epoxy group breaks underneath sp2 bond and modifies the mechanical and electronic properties of graphene remarkably. The foldable epoxy ring structure reduces its Young's modulus by 42.4%, while leaves the tensile strength almost unchanged. Epoxidation also perturbs the pi state and opens semiconducting gap for both phases, with dependence on the density of epoxidation. In the unzipped structures, localized states revealed near the Fermi level resembles the edge states in graphene nanoribbons. The study reported here paves the way for oxidation-based functionalization of graphene-related materials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron-nitride oxide (h-BNO) is a structural analogue of graphene oxide. Motivated by recent experimental studies of graphene oxide, we have investigated the chemical oxidation of 2D h-BN sheet and the associated electronic properties of h-BNO. Particular emphasis has been placed on the most favorable site(s) for chemisorption of atomic oxygen, and on the migration barrier for an oxygen atom hopping to the top, bridge, or hollow site on the h-BN surface, as well as the most likely pathway for the dissociation of an oxygen molecule on the h-BN surface. We find that when an oxygen atom migrates on the h-BN surface, it is most likely to be over an N atom, but confined by three neighbor B atoms (forming a triangle ring). In general, chemisorption of an oxygen atom will stretch the B-N bond, and under certain conditions may even break the B-N bond. Depending on the initial location of the first chemisorbed O atom, subsequent oxidation tends to form an O domain or O chain on the h-BN sheet. The latter may lead to a synthetic strategy for the unzipping of the h-BN sheet along a zigzag direction. A better understanding of the oxidation of h-BN sheet has important implications for tailoring the properties of the h-BN sheet for applications.

Abstract:Here we describe a computational study undertaken in an effort to elucidate the reaction mechanisms behind the experimentally observed oxidations and hydrations catalyzed by graphene oxide (GO). Using the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde as a model reaction, density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that this reactivity stemmed from the transfer of hydrogen atoms from the organic molecule to the GO surface. In particular, neighbouring epoxide groups decorating GO's basal plane were ring-opened, resulting in the formation of diols, followed by dehydration. Consistent with the experimentally-observed dependence of this chemistry on molecular oxygen, our calculations revealed that the partially reduced catalyst was able to be recharged by molecular oxygen, allowing for catalyst turnover. Functional group-free carbon materials, such as graphite, were calculated to have substantially higher reaction barriers, indicating that the high chemical potential and rich functionality of GO are necessary for the observed reactivity.

Abstract:A systematic theoretical study on the molecular electronic structure of graphene and its oxides, including their interactions with molecular species of different polarity, was carried out. The influence of the O/C atomic ratio in the graphene oxides was also evaluated. Quantum chemical and COSMO-based statistical-thermodynamic calculations were performed. Geometry optimizations demonstrated that graphene sheets are structurally distorted by oxygen substitution, although they show high resistance to deformation. Furthermore, under axial O-C bonding, proton-donor and proton-acceptor centers are created on the graphene oxide surface, which could acquire an amphoteric character. In low-oxidized graphene oxides, H-bonding centers coexist with neutral highly polarizable π electron clouds. Deep graphene oxidation is also related to the formation of a quasi-two-dimensional H-bond network. These two phenomena are responsible for the exceptional adsorption and catalytic properties and the potential proton conductivity of graphene oxides. The current calculations demonstrated that the interactions of polar molecular species with deep-oxidized graphene derivatives are thermodynamically favorable, but not with low-oxidized ones. The capacity of the quantum chemical and COSMO-RS calculations to model all these issues opens the possibility of selecting or designing graphene-based materials with optimized properties for specific applications. Also, they are valuable in selecting/designing solvents with good exfoliant properties with respect to certain graphene derivatives.

Abstract:Sulfur and its compounds could accelerate the corrosion and destruction of metallic materials, while the novel graphene would provide an effective means to protect those facilities in sulfur-containing atmosphere. Therefore, it is of great significance to study oxygen diffusion so as to explore the corrosion mechanism of graphene in sulfur-containing atmosphere. In this paper, the thermodynamic and kinetic behaviors of oxygen on intrinsic graphene, defective graphene and fluorinated graphene in sulfur-containing atmosphere were systematically studied by first principles calculations. The results show that the presence of sulfur would increase the adsorption energy of oxygen and reduce the diffusion energy barrier of oxygen, thereby accelerating the oxidation failure of graphene. Furthermore, the oxidation resistance of defective graphene in sulfur-containing atmosphere was even worse. Surprisingly, it was found that the fluorinated defective graphene could possess a relatively small adsorption energy of O in sulfur-containing atmosphere, and it also have the higher diffusion energy barrier of O on defective graphene. As a result, the fluorinated graphene has a great potential as protective materials with superior oxidation and corrosion resistance in sulfur-containing atmosphere.

Accelerated First-Principles Exploration of Structure and Reactivity in Graphene Oxide

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) materials are widely studied, and yet their atomic-scale structures remain to be fully understood. Here we show that the chemical and configurational space of GO can be rapidly explored by advanced machine-learning methods, combining on-the-fly acceleration for first-principles molecular dynamics with message-passing neural-network potentials. The first step allows for the rapid sampling of chemical structures with very little prior knowledge required; the second step affords state-of-the-art accuracy and predictive power. We apply the method to the thermal reduction of GO, which we describe in a realistic (ten-nanometre scale) structural model. Our simulations are consistent with recent experimental findings and help to rationalise them in atomistic and mechanistic detail. More generally, our work provides a platform for routine, accurate, and predictive simulations of diverse carbonaceous materials.

Abstract:Understanding the thermodynamic stability and redox properties of oxygen functional groups on graphene is critical to systematically design stable graphene-based positive electrode materials with high potential for lithium-ion battery applications. In this work, we study the thermodynamic and redox properties of graphene functionalized with carbonyl and hydroxyl groups, and the evolution of these properties with the number, types and distribution of functional groups by employing the density functional theory method. It is found that the redox potential of the functionalized graphene is sensitive to the types, number, and distribution of oxygen functional groups. First, the carbonyl group induces higher redox potential than the hydroxyl group. Second, more carbonyl groups would result in higher redox potential. Lastly, the locally concentrated distribution of the carbonyl group is more beneficial to have higher redox potential compared to the uniformly dispersed distribution. In contrast, the distribution of the hydroxyl group does not affect the redox potential significantly. Thermodynamic investigation demonstrates that the incorporation of carbonyl groups at the edge of graphene is a promising strategy for designing thermodynamically stable positive electrode materials with high redox potentials.

Abstract:Based on the first-principles method of density functional theory (DFT), a two-dimensional graphene/amorphous ZrO2 composite carrier supported precious metal Pd single atom catalyst was designed, and the catalytic efficiency and catalytic stability of CO to CO2 in limited domain were discussed. And the effect of the rotation angle between graphene and catalyst carrier on its performance was studied. The electronic properties, transition energy barrier and partial density of states of the relaxed catalysts were calculated and analyzed by first-principles method. The results show that the sandwich structure has good stability and high electron migration, while the corner structure protects the precious metal from escaping from the surface. The reaction energy barrier shows that the catalyst can complete the reaction within the energy barrier of 0.1~0.6 eV in the process of CO catalysis, and the rotation angle can move the reactant orbit faster near the Fermi level, speeding up the reaction. We propose a structural design method for a new type of single atom catalyst, and provide a reliable design basis and new design ideas for CO catalytic oxidation and green energy.

Abstract:Atomic level understanding of graphene oxidation behaviour is presently far from complete. During large scale preparation of graphene from graphene oxide (GO), persistent presence of up to 8% residual oxygen is an issue of great concern. Such incomplete reduction is attributed to the presence of highly stable carbonyl and ether groups. Here we present a new approach for limiting the formation and behavior of these functional groups. We report high temperature molecular dynamics simulations on the oxidation process of pristine (Pr) and mono-vacancy (MV) graphene with O2 with specific focus on the initial reaction period. An abnormal thermal behaviour was observed in the onset times of oxidation reactions; significant differences were detected in the nucleation and growth mechanisms and reaction kinetics. Overall reaction kinetics was significantly slower in the thermal region (Pr: 4350–4450 K; MV: 4300–4450 K). By identifying this region experimentally or theoretically, a narrow window of minimal carbonyl group formation and residual oxygen could be created leading to a major breakthrough in the field.

Abstract:Determining the precise chemical structure of graphene oxide (GO) is essential for studying its relevant properties. However, the distribution of oxidized functional groups on GO still lacks sufficient atomic-scale studies. Here, theoretical calculations based on density functional theory have been performed to explore thermodynamic distribution of hydroxyls and epoxy groups on GO. There are three key factors that significantly affect the structural stability: electron distribution, steric hindrance, and hydrogen-bond enhancement, which lead hydroxyls and epoxy groups to be distributed in close proximity of each other on opposite sides of GO. Therefore, the selective proximate antarafacial distribution of oxidized functional groups on GO is proposed, and island-like oxidized regions are assumed to be more favorable to form on the realistic structures of GO. This selective proximate antarafacial distribution pattern helps to explain the origin and evolution of GO surfaces and promotes to understand the microscopic surface chemistry of two-dimensional single-layer structures.

Abstract:Controllable synthesis of graphite oxide (GO) for targeted surface properties is of great importance for its versatile applications. For this purpose, GO samples were prepared with different amounts of oxidant and characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, C-13 cross-polarization with total sideband suppression magic-angle-spinning nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and zeta-potential measurement. When the oxidant amount is below a critical value, the epoxy groups are dominant on the GO surfaces, together with a few hydroxyl and carbonyl groups. Further increase in the oxidant amount leads to the formation and development of the carboxyl groups, which eventually reach a saturation level. Meanwhile, the increasing oxygen-containing groups introduce more defects and reduce the crystalline graphene domains on GO. A possible mechanism for the formation of the oxygen-containing groups on GO is proposed, providing a guideline for the manipulation of the GO surface properties.

Abstract:Boron has been considered as an important promising candidate for oxidation protection in carbon materials. However, the experimental discovery of catalytic effect of boron in graphite makes the role of boron confusing. To better understand the role of boron in carbon materials such as graphite or graphene, we investigate the oxidation behavior of boron-doped stoichiometric and vacancy-defected graphene plane by density functional theory calculations. Boron is found to be a catalyst for oxidation in the stoichiometric surface, while it acts as an inhibitor in the vacancy-defected surface. The electronic properties are calculated to explain why boron behaves differently in different surfaces. We show that the role of boron is closely associated with the redistribution of s electrons. For instance, the introduction of boron in stoichiometric surface facilitates the delocalized s electrons transfer from the matrix to oxygen and the adsorption energy increases with the number of transferred s electrons; while the decrease in reactivity with boron substitution in the vacancy-defected surface is largely attributed to the transition of electrons from delocalized states to localized states, thus suppressing the activity of dangling C atoms. This work helps to provide a theoretical foundation for further investigation of oxidation-resistant carbon materials.
Structural Stability and O-2 Dissociation on Nitrogen-Doped Graphene with Transition Metal Atoms Embedded: A First-Principles Study

Abstract:By using first-principles calculations, we investigate the structural stability of nitrogen-doped (N-doped) graphene with graphitic-N, pyridinic-N and pyrrolic-N, and the transition metal (TM) atoms embedded into N-doped graphene. The structures and energetics of TM atoms from Sc to Ni embedded into N-doped graphene are studied. The TM atoms at N4V 2 forming a 4N-centered structure shows the strongest binding and the binding energies are more than 7 eV. Finally, we investigate the catalytic performance of N-doped graphene with and without TM embedding for O2 dissociation, which is a fundamental reaction in fuel cells. Compared to the pyridinic-N, the graphitic-N is more favorable to dissociate O2 molecules with a relatively low reaction barrier of 1.15 eV. However, the catalytic performance on pyridinic-N doped structure can be greatly improved by embedding TM atoms, and the energy barrier can be reduced to 0.61 eV with V atom embedded. Our results provide the stable structure of N-doped graphene and its potential applications in the oxygen reduction reactions.
