Abstract:Low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are the key to electrolytic water splitting of water to produce high purity hydrogen as a green energy source. Construction of nanoarrays on conductive substrates is an effective way to obtain high OER performance, due to the high surface area, enhanced mass diffusion and low interface resistance between catalysts and collectors. To achieve these merits, effective control in the composition, phase structure and size of nanoarrays is highly desirable. Herein, nanosheet arrays of single-phase Co3O4, NiO and Co3O4/NiO nanocomposites were directly grown on carbon cloth by an electrodeposition method. The composition can be finely tuned via changing the Ni2+/Co2+ ratio in the electrodeposition solution. The thickness and plane size of the nanosheets can be also well controlled. The effects of size, composition and phase on the OER activity were investigated in detail. The optimized nanosheet arrays were further coated with a NiO layer to achieve an even enhanced OER activity.

Abstract:SnO2 thin films were deposited on activated Au foil by vacuum coating. Au-Pt/SnO2/Au composite electrode was prepared by reducing HAuCl4 and H2PtCl4 mixture solution and self-assembling Au-Pt nanobimetallic particles successively on the SnO2/Au. The composite electrode was characterized by SEM, TEM, XPS and cyclic voltammetry method. The results show that nanobimetallic particles are well distributed and the average diameter of the particles is about 25nm. The SnO2 as a modifying layer binds with Nanobimetallic particles via coordination bonding. The electrode of Au-Pt/SnO2/Au composite electrode has good electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation.

Abstract:Three-dimensional nanoporous metals of highly porous structure and interconnected ligaments are attractive for electrochemical reactions. Herein, freestanding 3D nanoporous silver (np-Ag) is prepared by a facile electrochemical approach, i.e., first electro-oxidizing silver to silver halides followed by electro-reduction of the silver halides by controlling the potential applied to the electrode. The np-Ag displays 130 and 11.5 times enhancement in catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction and the formaldehyde electrooxidation reaction, respectively, relative to the flat polycrystalline silver, and even outperforms the commercial nano-Pt catalyst. Detailed experimental and theoretical studies discover that both the facilitated mass transportation in the 3D interconnected porous structures and the favored kinetics contribute to the superior electro-catalytic activity of np-Ag.

Abstract:Nanoporous palladium composites with second phase embeddings can be fabricated through chemical dealloying of a rapidly solidified Al 70 Pd 30 alloy in alkaline or acidic solutions under free corrosion conditions. The microstructure of the precursor alloy and as-dealloyed nanoporous composites was characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. The experimental results show that the precursor alloy is composed of Al 3 Pd and Al 3 Pd 2 intermetallic compounds, and the resultant composites comprise the nanoporous palladium matrix dealloyed from Al 3 Pd and the undealloyed Al 3 Pd 2 embeddings. Moreover, the length scale of ligaments/channels in the nanoporous matrix can be adjusted from 3–6 nm to 15–25 nm by simply changing the dealloying solution. The electrochemical experiments demonstrate that these nanoporous Pd composites have high electrochemical active surface areas and exhibit remarkable electrocatalytic activities towards methanol and ethanol oxidation in alkaline media. These novel nanoporous Pd composites will find potential applications in fields of direct alcohol fuel cells, catalysis, sensing, actuation, and especially load-related areas. Abstract:Using a simple hydrothermal method combined with a post-annealing treatment, cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanosheet arrays are grown on three-dimensional (3D) nanoporous gold (NPG) film supported on Ni foam substrates, in which NPG is fabricated by chemically dealloying electrodeposited Au–Sn alloy films. The morphology and structure of the Co3O4@NPG/Ni foam hybrids are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The electrochemical activity of the Co3O4@NPG/Ni foam electrode toward hydrogen peroxide electroreduction in alkaline medium is studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), and chronoamperometry (CA). The results demonstrate that the Co3O4@NPG/Ni foam electrode possesses exceptionally high catalytic activity and excellent stability for the peroxide electroreduction, resulting mainly from the unique electrode architecture. The combined 3D hierarchical porous structures of NPG/Ni foam with the open and porous structures of Co3O4 nanosheet arrays facilitate the mass transport and charge transfer. Therefore, the metal oxides supported on 3D hierarchical porous NPG/Ni foam framework may hold great promise to be effective electrodes for electrocatalytic reduction of peroxide and other electrochemical reactions.

Abstract:In this paper, nanoporous platinum films with an enhanced surface area were obtained through a facile route by selective anodic dissolution of Cu from PtCu alloy. A homogeneous PtCu alloy was electrochemically deposited at a glassy carbon electrode at room temperature, then Cu was electrochemically etched from the PtCu alloy resulting in the fabrication of a nanoporous platinum film with a much higher surface area. The surface area of the dealloyed nanoporous platinum film was highly enhanced by up to 500 times compared with that of a polycrystalline platinum electrode. This nanoporous platinum film exhibited high stability and remarkable catalytic activity for oxygen electro-reduction and methanol electro-oxidation, with promising applications in fuel cells and biosensors, etc.

Abstract:Pd–Au porous foam films with three-dimensional hierarchical pores consisting of interconnected dendrite walls are obtained by using the hydrogen bubble dynamic template. The films are characterized by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, as well as electrochemical techniques. The CV curves have confirmed that the Pd–Au catalysts have high catalytic activity toward methanol oxidation. The catalytic activities of these Pd–Au catalysts are strongly dependent on the atomic ratio of Pd/Au. Among all the Pd–Au catalysts, the Pd1Au1 catalyst is found to possess superior catalytic activity and stability toward methanol oxidation.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical nanostructures have shown great promise for electrocatalysis, while a conductive core is paramount to boost the ultimate catalytic activity. In the present study, hierarchical NiFe hydroxide–Cu arrays are prepared through solution etch and sequential electrolysis as the electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The electrochemically reduced Cu nanoarrays as the core provide superior conductivity for electron transfer, while the unique hierarchical 3D structure provides a large active surface area, a short ion diffusion path, and open channels for efficient gas release. The resulting NiFe hydroxide–Cu arrays on copper foam (CF) exhibit outstanding catalytic performance of 245 and 300 mV, respectively, to achieve current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm–2 in a 1 M KOH solution. A small Tafel slope of 51 mV dec–1 and superior electrochemical durability of up to 100 h are also demonstrated.

Abstract:In this work, a novel 3D nanocomposite is presented, which is consisted of poly(N-acetylaniline) (PAANI)/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) nanorods (in which the inner layer was comprised of MWNTs and the outer layer was PAANI, forming a core-shell structure) and the decorated Pt nanoparticles. Electrochemical techniques (such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are used to characterize the nanocomposite. The resulting Pt/PAANI/MWNTs nanocomposite can be served as a higher efficient catalyst for the electrochemical oxidation of formaldehyde at 0.41V with the catalytic current of 0.73mA, which was accompanied with about 45mV potential negative shifts and two-fold increase in peak current comparison to the Pt/PAANI. These results reveal that the Pt/PAANI/MWNTs nanocomposite film is quite promising in the fuel cell applications.

Abstract:Polyaniline (PANI) nanotubes were successfully synthesized using the hydrothermal method via an in situ polymerization. In the process, a fibrillar complex of FeCl3 and methyl orange (MO), acting as the reactive self-degraded templates, directed the growth of PANI on its surface and promoted the assembly into nanotubular structures. By introducing PANI nanotubes into Au colloid, Au nanoparticles (NPs) could be decorated onto the PANI nanotube surface through the electrostatic effect. The morphology of the nanotubes and the number of decorated Au NPs could be controlled effectively by adjusting the experimental conditions. The resulting products were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). In addition, the electrocatalytic activity of the composites towards the oxidation of NADH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) was studied by immobilizing PANI/Au composites on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE).

Abstract:Pd is a highly active non-Pt anode in direct ethanol fuel cells, and its morphology and structural composition heavily influence its electrocatalytic efficiency. In this study, three-dimensional (3D)-hollow Au microspheres (HNPs-Au) as a support for the Pd monolayer () were synthesized using a simple template method and galvanic replacement reaction. The experimental results and theoretical calculations show that the presence of HNPs-Au enhances the catalytic activity of ethanol oxidation in alkaline media, improving the electroactivity of metallic Pd. Benefiting from the 3D-hollow-porous structure and the significant synergistic impact between Au and Pd (balancing the adsorption energy of the intermediate and reactant molecules), achieves a 10.8-fold mass activity and a 3.3-fold enhancement of the specific activity for the ethanol oxidation reaction when compared to commercial Pd/C. Abstract:Anisotropic 3D nanostructures exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability due to their heterogeneous elemental distribution and unsymmetrical configuration. However, it is still a huge challenge to combine anisotropically distributed elements and anisotropic morphologies within one 3D nanostructure. Herein, 3D Au@Pt–Pd hemispherical nanostructures (Au@Pt–Pd H-Ss) are fabricated as highly efficient electrocatalysts for oxidation reaction, which present heterogenous element distribution and anisotropic morphology. It is demonstrated that the non-uniform adsorption of BO2− on Au-CTA+ surface, as well as the simulated lower formation energy of Pt–Pd atoms for Au-CTA+-BO2-, basically contribute to the eventual formation of Au@Pt–Pd H-Ss. Impressively, the unique anisotropic Au@Pt–Pd H-Ss exhibit superior electrocatalytic activity and durability for methanol, ethanol, and formic acid oxidation reaction compared with commercial Pt/C and previously reported noble-metal based electrocatalysts. Especially, the mass activity of Au@Pt–Pd H-Ss for MOR is 4.38 A mgPt+Pd-1, which is about 2.0 and 4.7 times that of Au@Pt–Pd spherical nanostructures (Au@Pt–Pd Ss) and commercial Pt/C catalyst, respectively. This work provides an important reference for the design and preparation of 3D anisotropic and high-efficiency electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Au/Pt bimetallic nanoparticles with controllable structure were fabricated and extensively characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, high-resolution TEM, powder X-ray diffraction, UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Their catalytic activity has been studied and compared with different Pt nanoparticles in both the electrochemical reduction of oxygen and the oxidation of methanol to investigate the role of nanoparticle synthesis on their underlying electrocatalytic activity. Enhanced signals for methanol oxidation were observed at the Au/Pt bimetallic nanoparticles.
Enhanced Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation of Ultrathin Porous Co3O4 Nanosheets by Physically Mixing with Au Nanoparticles

Abstract:Ultrathin porous Co3O4 nanosheets are synthesized successfully, the thickness of which is about three unit-cell dimensions. The enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance and electronic interaction between Co3O4 and Au is firstly reported in Co3O4 ultrathin porous nanosheets by physically mixing with Au nanoparticles. With the loading of the Au nanoparticles, the current density of ultrathin porous Co3O4 nanosheets is enhanced from 9.97 to 14.76 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of 0.5 V, and the overpotential required for 10 mA cm−2 decreases from 0.51 to 0.46 V, smaller than that of commercial IrO2 (0.54 V). Furthermore, a smaller Tafel slope and excellent durability are also obtained. Raman spectra, XPS measurement, and X-ray absorption near edge structure spectra (XANES) show that the enhanced OER ascribed to a higher Co2+/Co3+ ratio and quicker charge transfer due to the electronic interaction between Au and ultrathin Co3O4 nanosheets with low-coordinated surface, and Co2+ ions are beneficial for the formation of CoOOH active sites.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) nanoporous nickel films were fabricated by a novel and facile method. The fabrication process involved the heat treatment of the electrodeposited zinc layer on nickel substrate and the subsequent electrochemical dealloying. The mutual diffusion of Ni and Zn during the heat treatment resulted in the formation of the Ni2Zn11 alloy surface film. The 3D nanoporous nickel films with open pores and interconnected ligaments were obtained by the electrochemical dealloying of relatively active zinc from the alloy surface film. As the electrodeposited zinc amount increased, the thickness, pore diameter and pore density of the nanoporous nickel films became larger. In our experimental range, the thickest nanoporous nickel film presented a thickness of 8 mu m and an average pore diameter of 700 nm. The as-prepared 3D nanoporous nickel films exhibited much higher electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) than smooth nickel foil, and their electrocatalytic activities for HER enhanced with increase in the porosity and thickness. It was concluded that the enhanced electrocatalytic activity and excellent electrochemical stability for HER of the as-prepared 3D nanoporous nickel films can be ascribed to their unique nanostructured characteristics. Abstract:We describe the fabrication, characterization, and applications of ultrathin, free-standing mesoporous metal membranes uniformly decorated with catalytically active nanoparticles. Platinum-plated nanoporous gold leaf (Pt-NPG) made by confining a plating reaction to occur within the pores of dealloyed silver/gold leaf is 100 nm thick and contains an extremely high, uniform dispersion of 3 nm diameter catalytic particles. This nanostructured composite holds promise as a prototypical member of a new class of fuel cell electrodes, showing good electrocatalytic performance at low platinum loading (less than 0.05 mg cm-2), while also maintaining long-term stability against coarsening and aggregation of catalytic nanoparticles.

Abstract:We have improved an electrochemical process in which the alternate current (AC) electrodeposition combined with the etching of substrate to prepare transparent metallic nanoparticles and anodic alumina oxide (AAO) composite films. The new process greatly simplifies the direct current (DC) electrodeposition process to get transparent composite films. Moreover, the electrocrystallization mechanism has been analyzed. The Ag, Cu and Ag-Cu co-deposited nanoparticles/AAO films have distinct absorption peaks, which can be ascribed to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of these noble metal nanoparticles.
