Abstract:A simple computer model based on the chemical equlibrium calculation is developed to evaluate the buffering capacity, beta, of acidic natural water equilibria with the mineral gibbsite, The influence of various factors [temperature, equilibrium constant for solubility of AI(OH)(3) solid-phase K-sp, concentrations of fluoride, dissolved organic carbon (DOG) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC)] on the beta values calculated were investigated. This model has been tested with real water quality data and applied to the practical analysis of natural water samples, The uncertainties in theoretical calculation of buffering capacity associated with the errors from variations in thermodynamic constants and measured input data were evaluated by the Monte Carlo method.

Abstract:This paper presents a simple computer model for predicting the pH values of acidic natural waters. Effects of various factors (such as, aluminum concentration, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), solubility product KSP of A1(OH)3 mineral phase and temperature) on the theoretical prediction of the pH values were discussed. Some valuable conclusions were obtained. This model has been applied to practical analysis of natural waters. The pH values calculated were found in accordance with the results measured. The uncertainties in calculation of the pH associated with the error from variations in thermodynamic constants and measured input data were evaluated by the Monte Carlo method.

Abstract:Discontinued acid-base titration was used to describe the protonation/deprotonation of the surface groups on peat.The fitted apparent acidity constant for peat site were pK_1=1.67 and pK_2=7.28 respectively,and total surface site density N_t=5.06×10~ -3 mol/g by means of origin 7.0 software. The evaluation of the intrinsic constants of peat may be useful to investigate mechanism of adsorptive action between harmful cation and peat.The modeling results show that adsorption of proton acts as a function of pH.

Abstract:Closed-form expressions for the pH of ideal weak acid and weak acid buffer solutions (and their titration with a strong base) were obtained and analyzed with the aid of computer algebra systems. These expressions are used to evaluate, without the use of numerical approximations, the precision and accuracy of different approximations commonly employed to calculate the pH. The closed-form expression for the pH of a buffer solution is used to obtain an analytical expression for the pH stability when a strong base is added. Finally, it is shown that the pH expressions for all the systems under study can be obtained from an unique closed-form expression in terms of an effective weak acid constant and an effective acid concentration.

Predicting Surface pH in Unbuffered Conditions for Acids, Bases, and Their Salts - A Review of Modeling Approaches and Their Performance

Abstract:Dissolution of ionizable drugs and their salts is a function of drug surface solubility driven by the surface pH, i.e., the microenvironmental pH at the solid/liquid interface, which will deviate from bulk pH when there is an acid-base reaction occurring at the solid/liquid interface. In this work, we first present a brief overview of the modeling approaches available in the literature, classified according to the rate-determining step assumed in the dissolution process. In the second part, we present and evaluate the prediction performance of two different modeling approaches for surface pH. The first method relies only on thermodynamic equilibria, while the second method accounts for transport phenomena of charged compounds through the diffusional boundary layer using the Nernst - Planck equation. Model outcomes are compared with experimental data taken from the literature and obtained during this work. In terms of surface pH predictions, the models provide identical values for weak acids or weak bases. The models' outcomes for bases are in good agreement with experimental data in acidic conditions (bulk pH 1-4), while overpredictions are observed in the 5-7 bulk pH range in a system-dependent manner. Deviations can be related to the effect of surface dissolution (also referred to as surface reaction), which may become a controlling mechanism and slow the replenishment of the unionized drug at the surface of the crystal. Surface pH predictions for acids are generally in good agreement with experiments, with a slight underestimation for some drug examples, which could be related to errors in intrinsic solubility determination or to the assumption of thermodynamic equilibrium at the surface of the drug. A good agreement is also observed for salts with the thermodynamic model except for mesylate salts, suggesting that other phenomena, not currently included in the thermodynamic equilibrium model, may determine the surface pH.

Abstract:Most undergraduate Organic chemistry textbooks contain a section on the general acid-base equilibria, strength of acids and bases, and predicting the equilibrium position of acid-base reactions (1-3). The students are taught to qualitatively predict the directions of these reactions using only the acid/base strengths or acid/base constants (pKa/pKb) without elaborating how or why they work. For example, statements like ‘stronger acids/bases tend to move towards weaker forms’ are not good explanations (1-3). Moreover, finding an answer in Analytical and Physical chemistry textbooks specific to this question is challenging (4-6). The simple thermodynamic framework put forward here can easily explain why these predictions work and allow one to quantify the direction of acid-base reactions.

Abstract:Soil acidification rate is an essential parameter to assess the vulnerability and sustainability of various ecosystems to acid deposition. The acid-buffering mechanism of soil system includes two major proton (H+) consumption pathways, i.e., mineral weathering and cation exchange in which the former consumes directly H+ and does not lead to soil acidification while the latter would cause soil acidification by exporting base cations. However, no available method distinguishes between H+ consumed by the two pathways, so soil acidification may have been overestimated as the bulk H+ consumption. Here we establish a method to differentiate the two major H+ consumption pathways quantitatively using the stoichiometric relations between silicon (Si) and base cations of rock, soil and stream water in a typical undisturbed forested watershed in subtropical China. The results showed that a large quantity of external H+ was stored in soil from acid deposition, and the H+ concentration in soil was further affected by the transformations and specific adsorptions of extraneous nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) compounds. The net input of H+ into the soil resulting from both wet and dry deposition was about 1395molha−1yr−1. The base cations from weathering was about 46% of the total net output of cations as calculated using the net output of Si by stream and the release ratio of base cations over Si during the weathering reaction of plagioclase, the predominant weatherable mineral in the area. The remaining output of base cations was attributed to cation exchange. Based on the ratio of H+ consumption by weathering and cation exchange, the actual soil acidification caused by cation exchange was estimated as 703molha−1yr−1, only about half of the net input of protons, which was substantially lower than the previous results obtained with no distinction between H+ consuming pathways. However, even taking the contribution of mineral weathering into account, the high net output of base cations indicates that the already acidic soil system is still depleting its base pools. This study provides a solution to estimate actual soil capacity to resist acid attack, which is crucial for reliable assessment of ecosystem resilience against external acid input.

Abstract:A theoretical computation approach and a classification method of two-reference-states for the acidification capacity of natural waters are developed after its definition, determination procedure and classification methods are demonstrated. In the theoretical computation of acidification capacity, the alkalinity, pH, chemical oxygen demand and Al(III) components of waters are chosen as the original parameters. The contribution of carbonate, dissolved organic matter, and soluble aluminum to the acidification capacity is, respectively, emphasized. On the basis of theory of aquatic chemistry and the aquatic status of Southwest Area of China, the calibration value of methyl orange alkalinity to TIP alkalinity is calculated as 49 mu M. The CaCO3 water system which balances with CO2 in the atmosphere, and the water system which holds the critical pH and balances with CO2 in the atmosphere are considered as the reference state of the waters difficult to acidification and the critical state of acidified water. The annual amount of acid deposition including precipitation and dry deposition is used as the reference criterion to classify the waters easy and difficult to acidification. As a case study, this model is applied to the southwest area of China, and some compatible results have been obtained. This model makes it possible to estimate the acidification trend of natural waters in a large scale of area. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
[Calculating of Critical Loads of Sulfur Deposition for Surface Waters in Southern China Using a Steady-State Acidification Model].

Abstract:In order to study the response of Chinese surface waters to acid deposition, a steady-state model based on acidity balance was applied in this paper to calculate critical loads of sulphur deposition for surface waters in southern China. An empirical equation for Chinese surface waters was obtained to calculate the background sulfate concentration. The results showed that the critical loads of sulphur deposition for most surface waters in southern China were more than 2.0 keq.(hm2.a)-1, indicating that they were not sensitive to acidification. Surface waters with critical loads less than 2.0 keq.(hm2.a)-1 were those waters located on mountains. Except these mountain waters, the critical loads of sulphur deposition for other surface waters were not exceeded by the present sulphur deposition, indicating acidification will not occur in the near future for these waters. The spatial distribution of critical load exceedance was similar with that of the critical loads, showing the trend of increasing from the southeastern provinces, such as Fujian, Guangdong and Jiangxi, to the southwestern and the central region. The uncertainty analysis of the model results indicated that, the errors of the results caused by the uncertainty of parameters and the input data were minor and acceptable so long as the input data were among the appropriate ranges.

Abstract:A theory is presented which allows us to quantitatively calculate the excess surface tension of acid solutions. The H^+, in the form of hydronium ion, is found to be strongly adsorbed to the solution-air interface. To account for the electrostatic potential difference measured experimentally, it is necessary to assume that the hydronium ion is oriented with its hydrogens pointing into the bulk water. The theory is quantitatively accurate for surface tensions and is qualitative for electrostatic potential difference across the air-water interface.

Abstract:Alkalinity is crucial in environmental control of ecosystems, wastewater and drinking water treatment, and industrial process control. In this work, we reported a new equation for calculating alkalinity based on the definition of buffer capacity in acid-base buffer solutions and the quantitative relationship between the buffer capacity and pH changes. A "mix and measure" method was developed using this new equation, involving mixing a solution with unknown alkalinity and a standard solution in a specific volume ratio, followed by measuring the pH after mixing. The alkalinity of the solution can be calculated using the newly developed equation. The "mix and measure" method is much more efficient than traditional titration methods for determination of alkalinity because it is restricted by the titration stoichiometric point. Additionally, we demonstrated the rapid determination of the alkalinity for a series of solutions using a portable detection system. This system exhibited precision and accuracy comparable to those of traditional titration methods. The portable system offers great potential for the on-site and real-time determination of alkalinity for industrial control and environmental monitoring purposes.

Abstract:Surface tensions for aqueous NaCl, NaBr, NaI, KCl, KBr, and KI solutions have been measured at different temperatures and different concentrations. The liquid densities and activity coefficients for electrolyte solutions are modeled accurately with the ion-based statistical associating fluid theory (SAFT2). Besides, a new surface tension prediction model on the basis of the Gibbs thermodynamic method, coupled with ion-based SAFT2 is established, which is applied to predict the surface tension of aqueous concentrated salt solutions at different concentrations and temperatures. In this model, we derived the relationship between the activity coefficient and surface tension, and the activity coefficient can be calculated by ion-based SAFT2. The model is found to give accurate prediction for the surface tension of aqueous concentrated electrolyte solutions at different concentrations and temperatures with the parameter obtained at one fixed temperature.

Abstract:Abstract Acid–base transport is integral to many important interfacial reactions in various fields of chemistry, but its theoretical foundation is lacked. Herein, a common acid–base transport model is established owing to the success in deriving buffer transport equations. This model is applicable to most buffer systems by flexibly integrating the transport equations in terms of buffer components, and is verified through the model relationships of buffer transport limiting current by using hydrogen evolution reaction experiments. Based on model calculations, two diagram approaches are proposed to depict the dynamic pH response and aid buffer operation optimizations. The model and methods allow us to quantify the rate‐limiting effect of acid–base transport on interfacial reactions and to precisely control the effect through medium regulations. Furthermore, the model has laid the foundation of dynamic pH effect on species transformation and process mechanism, which can be of wide interest in the chemistry encompassing interfacial reactions.

Abstract:A practical application of Driscoll's equation for predicting the acid-neutralizing capacity (ANC) in acidic waters equilibria with the mineral phase gibbsite is reported in this paper. Theoretical predication values of ANC are compared with the experimental data obtained from different literatures. The effect of aluminum (Al) on the value of ANC is investigated. It indicates that Al plays an important role in regulating the buffering effects in acidic natural waters. Failure to consider Al in acidic waters may bias assessment results in certain situations so as to overestimate the ANC values in response to increase in atmospheric deposition.

Abstract:We present a simulation method that allows us to calculate the titration curves for systems undergoing protonation/deprotonation reactions -- such as charged colloidal suspensions with acidic/basic surface groups, polyelectrolytes, polyampholytes, proteins, etc. The new approach allows us to simultaneously obtain titration curves both for systems in contact with salt and acid reservoir (semi-grand canonical ensemble) and for isolated suspensions (canonical ensemble). To treat the electrostatic interactions, we present a new method based on Ewald summation -- which accounts for the existence of both Bethe and Donnan potentials within the simulation cell. We show that that the Donnan potential affects dramatically the pH of suspension. Counter intuitively, we find that for concentrated suspensions of low ionic strength, the number of deprotonated groups can be 100\% larger in an isolated system, compared to a system connected to a reservoir by a semi-permeable membrane -- with both systems being at exactly the same pH.

Abstract:The surface density and electrolyte concentration dependences of the pK(a) of CH3(CH2)(21)NH3+ at the air/ water interface are obtained using the method of second harmonic generation. If it is assumed that the amphiphiles are uniformly distributed at the interface, the application of the Gouy-Chapman model yields pK(a) values ranging from 10.2 to 8.2 as the interface density varies from 100 to 22 Angstrom(2)/molecule. By accounting for the inhomogeneity of the interface, i.e., there are amphiphiles islands of "liquid phase" density immersed ill a "gas phase" of very low-density amphiphiles, a single pK(a), of 10.1 +/- 0.2 is obtained at all interface densities. The acidity of the long chain amine is enhanced by 3 times at the air/water interface compared with the bulk aqueous solution.

Abstract:An SMD implicit-explicit approach was developed that allows reproduction of experimental pK(a) values of various carbon acids in ionic liquids with a mean unsigned error of 1.28 pK units, which is comparable in magnitude to those authentic pK(a) calculations in conventional molecular solvents. This model may be used for predicting more pK(a) values in RTILs and may also offer clues for studying other thermodynamic quantities.

Abstract:A closed-form analytical expression for $\ce{[H3O+]}$ has been obtained for aqueous solutions of diprotic acids and its soluble salts. This formula allows to calculate the pH of aqueous solutions of diprotic acids, their buffer solutions, and the titrations of these two by a strong base, from the values of p$K_1$, p$K_2$, and the effective concentrations of the acid and the base, $\bar{C}_\mathrm{a}$ and $\bar{C}_\mathrm{b}$ respectively. It is shown that a strong base titration of an acid, or its buffer solutions, is always a linear path in the $\bar{C}_\mathrm{a}$--$\bar{C}_\mathrm{b}$ plane, which allows a simple analysis of the pH stability of buffer solutions. The mathematical analysis of the equilibrium equations of the dissolution of a diprotic acid in water and the physical constraints allowed to obtain two approximate equations for the diprotic acids. One of the approximations is useful for acids with $\mathrm{p}K_2-\mathrm{p}K_1\le\log_{10}4$, the other for acids with $\mathrm{p}K_2-\mathrm{p}K_1\le-\log_{10}4$.

Abstract:A simple computer model based on chemical equilibrium calculation for evaluating the aluminum speciation in surface waters of low ionic strength (I < 1 x 10(-4) M) was presented in this paper. The speciations of aluminum obtained by this model have been compared with those obtained experimentally and the reasons for the observed differences have been discussed. This model has been applied to the estimation of aluminum speciation in practical surface waters sampling from areas of the United Kingdom, United States and People's Republic of China. Some valuable conclusions are obtained.

Abstract:Determination of alkalinity of water sample is generally carried out experimentally by titration method using a proper indicator. In the literature, five different cases of possible alkalinities are reported based on the experimental data of acid titration of water sample using phenolphthalein and methyl orange. The reported data is the volume of acid consumption and the relationship between the alkalinity causing ions present in the water sample. However, no systematic approach is available in the literature to understand these experimentally reported volume of acid utilized for neutralization reaction. To make students understand the key features of the reported experimental data, a systematic approach is presented in this study. By using a simple mathematics and a theoretical explanation to the reported reactions taking place during acid titration of water sample, a supplementary document is developed. The theoretical concept in the form of supplementary information is introduced without altering any data reported in the literature or experimental procedure.
