Abstract:ZjO2- and TiO2-supported iron oxide catalysts prepared by a novel method display good catalytic activities in the synthesis of C2+-hydrocarbons (C2+-hydrocarbons: all hydrocarbons except methane) from carbon dioxide and hydrogen. The best result gives ca. 20% conversion of CO2 and 69% C2+ -hydrocarbons selectivity over 15 wt% Fe/ZrO2. The influences of iron loading and pre-reduction temperature on the catalytic activity are evaluated. Two maxima are observed when correlating the catalytic activity with iron loading. The results indicate that the optimum reduction temperature is 723 K for 5 wt% Fe/ZrO2 catalyst and 773 K for 5 wt% Fe/TiO2 catalyst.

Abstract:CO2 hydrogenation reaction was performed on precipitated iron catalysts which werepromoted by Si, Zn, K and Cu. The optimum SiO2 content in thecatalysts is about 15 wt% relative to Fe2O3 mass. Withreaction temperature raised, CO2 conversion is increased continually,but CO and CH4 selectivity only fluctuate in a narrow range which isbeneficial to the synthesis of C2+ hydrocarbons. Abstract:Conversion of CO2 using renewable hydrogen to produce valuable chemicals has recently become highly attractive. Light olefins are important basic monomers for the production of various commodities. This work developed a bifunctional catalyst composed of ZnO-Y2O3 oxide and SAPO-34 zeolite, which catalyzes the selective hydrogenation of CO2 to light olefins with a selectivity in hydrocarbons reaching 83.9% at a conversion of 27.6% at 390 degrees C. The obtained results demonstrated that CO2 conversion and product distribution are strongly dependent on the oxide composition and structure. This new bimetallic oxide catalyst appears promising for further development of CO2 conversion to other valuable chemicals.

Abstract:The catalytic hydrogenation of CO 2 to olefins has received considerable attention. Herein, transition metal- and sodium-modulated iron-based catalysts were fabricated. Doping with zinc and copper favor the formation of Fe 3 O 4 and Fe 5 C 2 active phases, while adding manganese inhibits the formation of iron carbide. In addition, phase separation between copper and iron species occurs more readily under working conditions. Therefore, a zinc- and sodium-modulated Fe catalyst exhibited the best activity and stability. Moreover, copper was predicted to substantially decrease the energy barrier of the rate-determining step for the secondary hydrogenation of olefins and result in a much lower olefin-to-paraffin ratio. In addition, the ZnO/Fe 5 C 2 interface facilitated the desorption of olefins from the catalyst surface and inhibited the undesirable secondary reaction of olefins, enabling a high selectivity toward olefins of 36.9% C 2–4 = and 32.3% C 5+ = . This study provides an exemplary new strategy for tuning the product selectivity of catalysts for olefin synthesis.

Abstract:Control of product distribution over CO2-FTO is challenging due to the difficulty in governing the C–C coupling of CHx species. Surface modification to iron catalysts shows potential but its role remains indistinct. Fe/ZnO was used as a model catalyst to investigate the effects of the surface groups on its catalytic performance for CO2-FTO. On hydroxyl group modified Fe/ZnO by H2O2-treatment, at 1000 h–1, 300 °C, and 1 MPa, the CO2 conversion, and the C4+ linear α-olefin selectivity rose to 50.2 % and 48.1 %, respectively. Alkyl group modified Fe/ZnO by stearic acid treatment exhibited higher activity (48.4 %) and the C2 =–C3 = selectivity (31.0 %). Characterizations showed that decorating the hydroxyl group boosted the formation of Fe5C2 and CHx species, promoting the chain growth for long-chain olefin, whereas the alkyl group modification retarded the activity decline through stabilizing active FeCx phases and forming graphite carbon which was conducive to suppressing secondary hydrogenation.

Abstract:Catalytic utilizing of CO 2 into valuable olefins on Fe-based catalysts is a feasible way to mitigate the pressure of carbon neutrality. Herein, by investigating the effects of support (SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , CNT, and ZrO 2 ) on the structure and catalytic performance of iron catalysts, we have found that ZrO 2 supported catalysts are more beneficial to olefin selectivity and chain growth. The optimization catalytic performance of FeNa/ZrO 2 displays C 2 -C 7 olefin selectivity of 68.2% (O/P = 8.0) with a space time yields (111.4 g Kg cat -1 h −1 ) at X CO2 = 32.7%, 320 0C, 2.0 MPa, CO 2 /H 2 /Ar = 1:3:3, and 9000 mL g -1 h −1 . Characterizations show that the support regulates the composition of the iron oxide phase and the iron carbide phase and induces to form the highest content of Fe 5 C 2 on the spent FeNa/ZrO 2 , which is probably caused by the carbon rich surface and lower disorder of carbon species. Besides, the higher intensity of CO 2 and CO adsorption and lower intensity of H 2 adsorption is confirmed on the surface of the FeNa/ZrO 2 catalysts, leading to a higher ratio of C/H on the surface of the spent catalysts and consequently inhibiting the hydrogenation of olefins. Therefore, the O/P is 8 times as many as that on the FeNa/SiO 2 and FeNa/Al 2 O 3 . Understanding the effect of support on CO 2 hydrogenation to olefins over iron-based catalysts would be significant for precisely designing new catalysts.

Abstract:Organic synthesis presents significant opportunities for converting the abundant and hazardous carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere into a more sustainable carbon source. To reduce the carbon footprint, we explored the direct hydrogenation of CO2 to lower (C2‐4=) olefins using various catalysts composed of ZrO2‐supported alkali‐metal‐promoted superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs; Fe3O4). These catalysts are notable for their straightforward preparation; we employed a cost‐effective dry‐mixing method to create a range of alkali metal‐doped SPIONs supported on ZrO2. Results showed that the strong interactions between Fe3O4 and the ZrO2 support enhanced CO2 hydrogenation performance compared to other forms, such as pristine Fe or Fe2O3. Under optimal conditions—using a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 4500 mL/h/gcat and a feed ratio of H2:CO2 = 3:1—this catalyst achieved over 22% CO2 conversion and high selectivity for light (C2‐4=) olefins at 30 bar and 375 oC, with 30 wt% Fe3O4 loading on ZrO2 and 2 wt% K promoter. We also investigated several variables, including alkali metal concentration, iron content, reaction conditions, and catalyst stability over 96 hours.

Abstract:Production of light olefins from CO2, the primary greenhouse gases, is of great importance to mitigate the adverse effects of CO2 emission on environment and to supply the value-added products from non-petroleum resource. However, development of robust catalyst with controllable selectivity and stability remains a challenge. Herein, we report that Zn-promoted Fe catalyst can boost the stable and selective production of light olefins from CO2. Specifically, the Zn-promoted Fe exhibits a highly stable activity and olefin selectivity over 200 h time-on-stream compared to the unpromoted Fe catalyst, primarily owing to the preservation of active χ-Fe5C2 phase. Structural characterizations of the spent catalysts suggest that Zn substantially regulates the content of iron carbide on the surface and suppresses the re-oxidation of bulk iron carbide during the reaction. DFT calculations confirm that adsorption of surface carbon atoms and graphene-like carbonaceous species are not thermochemically favored on Zn-promoted Fe catalyst. Carbon deposition by C—C coupling reactions of two surface carbon atoms and dehydrogenation of CH intermediate are also inhibited. Furthermore, the effects of Zn on antioxidation of iron carbide were also investigated. Zn favored the hydrogenation of surface adsorbed oxygen atoms to H2O and the desorption of H2O, which reduces the possibility of surface carbide being oxidized by the chemisorbed oxygen.Graphical abstractDownload : Download high-res image (75KB)Download : Download full-size image

Abstract:The catalytic performances of ferrisilicates with ZSM-48 structure(denote d as Fe-ZSM-48) used as catalyst supports in CO hydrogenation to light olefines were investigated. Incorporation of Fe(Ⅲ) ions into the zeolite framework signi ficantly raises both the reaction activity and selectivity which is the result of promoting the reduction of the active components,weakening the hydrogen adsorption,and leading to a more uniform distribution of the surface energies. The supported iron and potassium contents,calcination temperature and atmosphere have great effects on the catalytic properties of Fe-ZSM-48,showing that Fe(Ⅲ) sites of the framework and the removal of organic template may play important roles.
Topotactic Transformation of Metal–Organic Frameworks to Iron-based Catalysts for the Direct Hydrogenation of CO2 to Olefins

Abstract:Iron-based catalysts are promising for direct hydrogenation reactions of carbon dioxide (CO2) to olefins. In this work, a series of iron-based catalysts (MFe/C) have been fabricated by pyrolysis of metal–organic frameworks (Fe-MIL-88) modified with the second transition metal M (M = Zn, Ni, Mn) for exploring the promoter effects on the selectivity of CO2 hydrogenation. Combined with Mössbauer spectroscopy and other characterization techniques, it is observed that the promoters play a significant role in tuning the phase transition and the content of different Fe sites within the Fe5C2 of the MFe/C catalyst, which in turn impact the reactivity over CO2 hydrogenation. Specifically, the introduction of Mn favored the formation of Fe5C2, which enhances C-C coupling and inhibits the secondary hydrogenation of alkenes, realizing an optimal catalytic performance with a CO2 conversion of 37.60 %, the ratio of olefin to paraffin (O/P) of 2.38 and a C5+ space-time yield of around 0.27 mol gcat-1h-1 under the reaction condition of H2/CO2 = 3, 400 ̊C, 2.0 MPa, 12000 mL h-1gcat-1. Furthermore, it is found that the content of the specific Fe sites within Fe5C2 (site II and III) are positively correlated to O/P and olefin selectivity. The results of this work provide new insights into the influence of the different metal promoters on the active sites of Fe5C2 for CO2 hydrogenation.

Abstract:Selective formation of hydrocarbons from CO2 hydrogenation via the FTS pathway has been attracting interest. Oxygen vacancies (Ov) on the catalyst surface show a subtle role during CO2 activation. Herein, the effects of Ov on FeCx/ZnO catalysts are presented for CO2 hydrogenation to linear α-olefins (LAOs). ZnO with surface Ov of varied concentrations was firstly obtained using heated H2-treatment and used to support active FeCx phases. FeCx/ZnO with appropriate surface Ov achieved CO2 conv. of 48.86% with LAOs sel. of 49.38% and C1 product below 10%. Characterizations confirmed that the Ov concentration exhibited a positive correlation with the interaction between the iron species and ZnO. With H2-treatment of ZnO at 500–600 °C, FeCx/ZnO-T showed 26–33% Ov in all the oxygen species, which increased the surface C/H ratio and promoted the formation of the key intermediate HCOO− and CHx species for chain growth. Excessive Ov accelerated secondary hydrogenation and increased CH4.

Abstract:A novel sodium-promoted Fe-Co/NC catalyst prepared by incipient-wet-impregnation method using ZIF-67 as a support was employed to convert CO2 to light olefins through hydrogenation reaction. Properties of the synthesized catalysts calcinated at various temperatures (from 400 to 700 °C) were investigated by XRD, SEM, TEM and Mӧssbauer spectroscopy. Characterization results showed that the support could be fully converted into carbon support above 500 °C, which could anchor metal particles, thus resulting in a uniform dispersion of active components. Furthermore, the Fe-Co alloy was formed during N2 calcination, and was converted into active components, such as Fe3O4, Fe5C2, and Co2C during the reaction. The reaction result indicated that FeCo/NC-600 catalyst exhibited the highest selectivity of light olefins (C2= − C4=, 27%) and CO2 conversion could reach around 37% when this catalyst pyrolyzed at 600 °C in N2. The highest selectivity for light olefins may be related to the combination of suitable particle size and sufficient active sites of iron carbide.

Mechanistic Insight into Hydrocarbon Synthesis via CO2 Hydrogenation on χ-Fe5C2 Catalysts

Abstract:Converting CO2 into value-added chemicals and fuels is one of the promising approaches to alleviate CO2 emissions, reduce the dependence on nonrenewable energy resources, and minimize the negative environmental effect of fossil fuels. This work used density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with microkinetic modeling to provide fundamental insight into the mechanisms of CO2 hydrogenation to hydrocarbons over the iron carbide catalyst, with a focus on understanding the energetically favorable pathways and kinetic controlling factors for selective hydrocarbon production. The crystal orbital Hamiltonian population analysis demonstrated that the transition states associated with O-H bond formation steps within the path are less stable than those of C-H bond formation, accounting for the observed higher barriers in O-H bond formation from DFT. Energetically favorable pathways for CO2 hydrogenation to CH4 and C2H4 products were identified which go through an HCOO intermediate, while the CH* species was found to be the key C1 intermediate over χ-Fe5C2(510). The microkinetic modeling results showed that the relative selectivity to CH4 is higher than C2H4 in CO2 hydrogenation, but the trend is opposite under CO hydrogenation conditions. The major impact on C2 hydrocarbon production is attributed to the high surface coverage of O* from CO2 conversion, which occupies crucial active sites and impedes C-C couplings to C2 species over χ-Fe5C2(510). The coexistence of iron oxide and carbide phases was proposed and the interfacial sites created between the two phases impact CO2 surface chemistry. Adding potassium into the Fe5C2 catalyst accelerates O* removal from the carbide surface, enhances the stability of the iron carbide catalyst, thus, promotes C-C couplings to hydrocarbons.

Abstract:Converting CO2 to olefins is an ideal route to achieve carbon neutrality. However, selective hydrogenation to light olefins, especially single-component olefin, while reducing CH4 formation remains a great challenge. Herein, we developed ZnZrOx/SSZ-13 tandem catalyst for the highly selective hydrogenation of CO2 to light olefins. This catalyst shows C2=-C4= and propylene selectivity up to 89.4% and 52%, respectively, while CH4 is suppressed down to 2%, and there is no obvious deactivation. It is demonstrated that the isolated moderate Brønsted acid sites (BAS) of SSZ-13 promotes the rapid conversion of intermediate species derived from ZnZrOx, thereby enhancing the kinetic coupling of the reactions and inhibit the formation of alkanes and improve the light olefins selectivity. Besides, the weaker BAS of SSZ-13 promote the conversion of intermediates into aromatics with 4-6 methyl groups, which is conducive to the aromatics cycle. Accordingly, more propene can be obtained by elevating the Si/Al ratio of SSZ-13. This provides an efficient strategy for CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins with high selectivity.

Abstract:Converting carbon dioxide into lower olefins (C2 =-C4 =) through hydrogenation is a crucial chemical reaction that allows for the use of CO2 as carbon source in the production of foundational chemicals. Herein, nitrogen-doped carbon-coated iron-based catalysts were obtained by pyrolysis NH2-MIL-88B under N2 atmosphere. The results show that the catalyst morphology, particle size and Fe phase structure can be controlled by changing the pyrolysis conditions. As the temperature rises, the structure starts to deteriorate, resulting in a gradual increase in the iron content and particle size. Fe3O4 and Fe3C phases appeared in the 350/500 °C two-stage pyrolysis, and the two-stage pyrolysis could effectively alleviate the structural collapse of MOFs precursors during the pyrolysis process. With the catalyst obtained by 350/500 °C two-stage pyrolysis, the conversion of CO2 could reach 35.1% and the selectivity of light olefins reached 37.7% (340 °C, 3 MPa, and GHSV= 5000 mL gcat −1 h−1).

Abstract:The pretreatment atmosphere has a significant impact on the performance of iron-based catalysts in carbon dioxide (CO2) hydrogenation. In this study, we investigated the effects of carbon monoxide (CO), syngas (H2/CO), and hydrogen (H2) on the performance of iron-based catalysts during the pretreatment process. To evaluate the structural changes in catalysts after activation and reaction, we analyzed their morphology and particle size, the surface and bulk phase composition, carbon deposition, the desorption of linear α-olefins and reaction intermediates using transmission electron microscope (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Mössbauer spectroscopy (MES), temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS). Raman and XPS showed that the H2 pretreatment catalyst caused the absence of iron carbides due to the lack of carbon source, and the CO and syngas pretreatment catalysts promoted the formation of carbon deposits and iron carbides. While the bulk phase of the CO and syngas pretreatment catalyst mainly consists of iron carbide (FeCx), XRD and MES revealed that the bulk phase of the H2 pretreatment catalyst primarily consisted of metallic iron (Fe) and iron oxide (FeOx). The composition of the phase is closely associated with its performance at the initial stage of the reaction. The formation of olefins and C5+ products is more encouraged by CO pretreatment catalysts than by H2 and syngas pretreatment catalysts, according to in situ DRIFTS evidence. Ethylene (C2H4)/propylene (C3H6)-TPD indicates that the CO pretreatment catalyst is more favorable for the desorption of olefins which improves the olefins selectivity. Based on the analysis of the TEM images, H2 pretreatment stimulated particle agglomeration and sintering. In conclusion, the results show that the CO-pretreatment catalyst has higher activity due to the inclusion of more FeOX and Fe3C. In particular, the presence of Fe3C was found to be more favorable for the formation of olefins and C5+ hydrocarbons. Furthermore, carbon deposition was relatively mild and more conducive to maintaining the balance of FeOx/FeCx on the catalyst surface.

Abstract:A novel FeCoMnK/BeO catalyst was prepared by impregnation method and evaluated in the synthesis of light olefins from carbon dioxide hydrogenation. It is found that the yield of light olefins reaches the highest under the conditions of 647 K, 3?000 h -1 and CO 2/H 2 molar ratio 1/3. On BeO supported catalyst, the yield of light olefins is much higher than that on Al 2O 3, SiO 2 and active carbon supported catalysts. By the studies of in situ FT IR, a possible mechanism is proposed on the basis of surface intermediates.
