Abstract:In this chapter, the nanofluid dynamic wetting was studied with complex external conditions. The effects of substrate heating and intensive free surface evaporation on the wetting kinetics of nanofluids were simulated using molecular dynamics simulations. The effects of initial droplet temperature, substrate temperature, and wettability were examined. The microscopic mechanisms of nanoparticle self-assembly and nanofluid droplet evaporating-spreading behavior were revealed by tracing the particle motion and molecular mobility near the contact line region.

Abstract:In this chapter, a lattice Boltzmann method with some simple but effective treatments with consideration of nanofluid surface tension and rheology modification, as well as the nanoparticle sedimentations, is conducted to investigate the effects of nanoparticle kinetics at the nanoscale (10(-9) m) on the dynamic wetting behaviors occurring at the macroscopic scale (10(-3) m). The study provides multi-scale understanding and guidelines to tune the nanofluid dynamic wetting behaviors.

Abstract:In this chapter, the time-dependent wetting radius and contact angle for various nanofluid droplets were measured to study the dynamic wetting behaviors of nanofluids. The experiment results show that the adding of nanoparticles inhibits the dynamic wetting of nanofluids as compared with base fluids. The reduced spreading rate can be attributed to the increase in either surface tension or viscosity due to adding nanoparticles into the base fluid. Once the effects of the surfaces tension and viscosity are both eliminated using the non-dimensional analysis, the wetting radius versus spreading time curves for all the nanofluid droplets overlap with each other. The spreading exponent fitted from the nanofluid dynamic wetting data agrees with the prediction of the classical hydrodynamics model derived from the bulk viscous dissipation approach. The present study proves that the spreading of the nanofluid droplets is dominated by the bulk dissipation rather than by the local dissipation at the moving contact line.

Abstract:Dynamic wetting is an important interfacial phenomenon in many industrial applications. There have been many excellent reviews of dynamic wetting, especially on super-hydrophobic surfaces with physical or chemical coatings, porous layers, hybrid micro/nano structures and biomimetic structures. This review summarizes recent research on dynamic wetting from the viewpoint of the fluids rather than the solid surfaces. The reviewed fluids range from simple Newtonian fluids to non-Newtonian fluids and complex nanofluids. The fundamental physical concepts and principles involved in dynamic wetting phenomena are also reviewed. This review focus on recent investigations of dynamic wetting by non-Newtonian fluids, including the latest experimental studies with a thorough review of the best dynamic wetting models for non-Newtonian fluids, to illustrate their successes and limitations. This paper also reports on new results on the still fledgling field of nanofluid wetting kinetics. The challenges of research on nanofluid dynamic wetting is not only due to the lack of nanoscale experimental techniques to probe the complex nanoparticle random motion, but also the lack of multiscale experimental techniques or theories to describe the effects of nanoparticle motion at the nanometer scale (10-9 m) on the dynamic wetting taking place at the macroscopic scale (10-3 m). This paper describes the various types of nanofluid dynamic wetting behaviors. Two nanoparticle dissipation modes, the bulk dissipation mode and the local dissipation mode, are proposed to resolve the uncertainties related to the various types of dynamic wetting mechanisms reported in the literature.

Abstract:In this chapter, the dynamic wetting of nanofluid droplets is examined using molecular dynamics simulations. The main purpose is to provide the definition and the explanation of local dissipation in nanofluid dynamic wetting due to the nanoparticle self-assembly. In addition, the magnitude of structure disjoining pressure is compared with the unbalanced Young's stress acting at the contact line in the second part to examine the effects of structural disjoining pressure due to the nanoparticle self-assembly in the vicinity of the contact line region. The microscopic mechanism of the contact line motion is investigated on the atomic level.

Abstract:Hydrodynamic models are generally applied to describe the dynamic wetting of newtonian or non-newtonian fluids on a solid surface. Conversely, the molecular-kinetic paradigm is only utilized for spreading newtonian fluids while considering the movement of a contact line as a molecular hopping process. This study extended the molecular-kinetic paradigm to the wetting behavior of non-newtonian fluids, while assuming there are n fluid components at the contact line regime interacting simultaneously with a solid surface during front movement. The limiting cases of the derived model at slow and fast moving speeds were discussed. Moreover, the derived model was validated based on dynamic contact angle data of three carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) aqueous solutions measured using the force-balance method. Best-fit parameters were used to interpret the wetting dynamics of CMC solutions.

Abstract:An important reason for the century-long debate concerning wetting dynamics is the lack of decisive information about the contact line. The contact line cannot be treated as a geometric line but is rather a region with complex structures. The contact line regions have been intensively explored in recent years by utilizing advanced nanoscopic experimental and modeling methods. This feature article summarizes the primary observation results and related modeling progress. A framework is then proposed for understanding the wetting dynamics. Basic questions are raised for future research on the partial wetting of nonvolatile as well as volatile liquids.

Abstract:The initial explosion of interest in the opportunities created by the ready availability of nanoscale particles of a variety of materials generated many claims for potential applications of their suspensions in liquids in the context of enhanced heat transfer. Calmer, objective reflection prompted by more careful experimentation and simulation has revealed that most of these claims were ill-founded. This paper explores some of the opportunities that may yet lead to real applications in the particular context of fluid heat transfer. In order to provide an appropriate direction for future studies, we show here there are some special situations in which the modest enhancement of the apparent thermal conductivity that can be achieved by nanofluids over the base fluid may be sufficient to be technically useful. In addition, we consider what is almost the opposite circumstance where, instead of exploiting the enhancement of the heat transfer between fluid and solid particles, processes use the poor heat transfer between the two phases to drive phase changes within the fluid phase itself. The applications of this phenomenon seem to have even greater potential. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The wettability of nanofluid is a key factor affecting oil recovery and fluid heat transfer. However, the traditional wettability measurement method consisting in determining the contact angle enables to assess the wettability at a solid–liquid contact point only and not within the continuous detection range. Therefore, in this work, a lateral friction detection system is used to continuously measure the wettability of hydroxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes/deionized water (MWCNT-OH/DIW) nanofluids on polydimethylsiloxane surfaces. Specifically, MWCNT-OH/DIW nanofluids with various mass fractions are configured, and different surfactants are introduced to regulate the dispersion in deionized water. The results reveal that the surface tension and contact angle decrease simultaneously with the increase in MWCNT-OH/DIW mass fraction. Meanwhile, this change also causes an increase in the lateral friction at the nanofluid/PDMS interface. Furthermore, both sodium dodecyl sulfate and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as surfactants can effectively reduce its surface tension. Notably, when CTAB is added, the maximum static friction (132.62 μN) exceeds that of SDS (113.13 μN). Therefore, the proposed method opens up new prospects in wettability detection of nanofluids.

Abstract:Hypothesis Although extensive research has been conducted on the dynamic wetting of Newtonian fluids, limited insights have been gained for viscoelastic fluids, particularly on engineered surfaces. We hypothesize that differences in dynamic wetting on microstructured surfaces exist between such fluids, which may be attributed to variations in viscosity and elasticity as well as changes in the microscopic morphology of the moving contact line. Experiments To systematically investigate the wetting differences between Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids on microstructured surfaces, we conducted forced wetting experiments of glycerol-water and carboxymethyl cellulose aqueous solutions on microstructured polytetrafluoroethylene surfaces through a modified Wilhelmy plate method. Findings Results demonstrated an apparent difference in the relationship between the dynamic contact angle and moving velocity with different microstructured surfaces for Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids. The power-law exponent between the capillary number and cubic of the dynamic contact angle increases with the strengthening of shear thinning and elastic effects. In contrast, this exponent is rarely influenced by the scale of microstructured surfaces, particularly in highly viscous regions where viscous force dominates. In addition, viscosity affects the viscous bending and distance that liquid molecules jump at the contact line. These findings have potential applications in coating complex fluids on engineered surfaces.
Nanoscale wettability characterization—Interpreting droplet morphological evolution in nanopores

Abstract:Nanoscale wettability, crucial for various disciplines in science and engineering, challenges traditional theory, particularly the Young's equation. This study proposes and validates a modified format of the Young's equation under nano‐confinement and, for the first time, the nano‐confined droplet morphological evolution and transition are investigated from thermodynamic theories and molecular dynamics simulation. The morphologies of droplets in nano‐silts, identified as double‐cap, single‐cap, and bridge‐shaped, underscore the critical roles of line tension and nano‐confinement in characterizing wetting behavior. In hydrophobic nano‐slits, droplets transition from the double‐cap to the single‐cap shape at the critical point of r0/H = 0.31 and to bridge shape at the critical point of r0/H = 0.40. Moreover, the relative width of the neck region in the bridge‐shaped droplets is found to stabilize at w/r ratio of 1.8. Particularly, linear relationships have been established between the droplet contact angle and the parameter H/r0 , which identify condensation and breakage of droplets within hydrophobic nano‐slits. This model effectively characterizes nanoscale wettability, with precise droplet behavior predictions, which could be beneficial to enhance nano‐fluid dynamics understanding and its applications in science and engineering.

Abstract:This work study the dynamic wetting behavior of three PEG400+SiO2 nanofluids by both sessile drop method and Wilhelmy plate method.The rheology of the test fluids are complex and the shape of the three phase contact line are different for the two experiment method.The θD-U curves got by the two different methods are compared each other.It is found that the shape of the contact line plays an important role on the dynamic wetting process for the test fluids with complex rheology,which is different for Newtonian fluids.In this work,the mechanism of the influence is analyzed by compare the rheology and θD-U relationship.

Abstract:An experimental system was built to investigate convective heat transfer and flow features of the nanofluid in a tube. Both the convective heat transfer coefficient and friction factor of the sample nanofluids for the turbulent flow are measured, respectively. The effects of such factors as the volume fraction of suspended nanoparticles and the Reynolds number on the heat transfer and flow features are discussed in detail. A new type of convective heat transfer correlation is proposed to correlate experimental data of heat transfer for nanofluids.

Abstract:The hydrodynamic slippage at a solid-liquid interface is currently at the center of our understanding of fluid mechanics. For hundreds of years this science has relied upon no-slip boundary conditions at the solid-liquid interface that has been applied successfully to model many macroscopic experiments, and the state of this interface has played a minor role in determining the flow. However, the problem is not that simple and has been revisited recently. Due to the change in the properties of the interface, such as wettability and roughness, this classical boundary condition could be violated, leading to a hydrodynamic slip. In this chapter, we review recent advances in the understanding and expectations for the hydrodynamic boundary conditions in different situations, by focussing mostly on key papers from past decade. We highlight mostly the impact of hydrophobicity, roughness, and especially their combination on the flow properties. In particular, we show that hydrophobic slippage can be dramatically affected by the presence of roughness, by inducing novel hydrodynamic phenomena, such as giant interfacial slip, superfluidity, mixing, and low hydrodynamic drag. Promising directions for further research are also discussed.

Abstract:Fluid behaviour in nanoscale pores may significantly deviate from that in its bulk state, because pore-wall effects may have critical influences on fluid properties such that its behaviour becomes surface-controlled. Geologically, study of fluid flow with phase transition (condensation/evaporation) in nanoscale pores is of considerable significance in practice, as understandings of the relevant mechanisms may greatly help optimise operation conditions in field applications. Typical examples include geological disposal of contaminated wastes and recovery of resources from unconventional gas and oil reservoirs. In this text, we present a study to systematically investigate how the fluid behaviour, such as the liquid film formed on a pore-wall, the condensation/evaporation of the fluid and the evaporative flow profile in the pore, depends on the molecular/electrical surface forces and the pore-wall-curvature. Towards this we first formulated a set of extended phase equilibrium relationships following a rigorous thermodynamic procedure in which the relevant pore-wall effects are included. Then, a set of new evaporative flow equations was developed, which improves the original Mahadevan model by taking into account the pore-wall effects engaged. Several laboratory tests published in literature were employed to compare the present model with the Mahadevan model. With the results obtained we discussed the pertinent pore-wall effects on the evaporation behaviour of the water, and it was shown that for the evaporative flow process concerned, these effects are significantly important and considerable deviations would be generated without consideration of them.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate dynamic wetting in the curtain coating configuration. The two-phase Navier-Stokes equations are solved by a Volume-of-Fluid method on an adaptive Cartesian mesh. We introduce the Navier boundary condition to regularize the solution at the triple point and remove the implicit numerical slip induced by the cell-centered interface advection. We use a constant contact angle to describe the dynamic contact line. The resolution of the governing equations allows us to predict the substrate velocity at which wetting failure occurs. The model predictions are compared with prior computations and experimental observations.

Abstract:Abstract A novel concept of treating oil reservoirs by nanofluids is being developed to improve oil recovery and reduce the trapped oil in hydrocarbon reservoirs. Nanoparticles show great potential in enhancing oil recovery under ambient conditions. In this paper, the approaches of wettability alteration by using nanofluid, stability of nanofluids, and the most reliable wettability alteration mechanisms associated with variant types of nanoparticles have been reviewed. Moreover, the parameters that have a significant influence on nanofluid flooding have been discussed. Finally, the recent studies of the effect of nanoparticles on wettability alteration have been summarised and analysed. Furthermore, this paper presents possible opportunities and challenges regarding wettability alteration using nanofluids.
